An Abridgment of the Six Weeks, and Six Months Tours...through the Southern, and Northern Counties of England and Part of Wales. Containing, All the most important Articles of Information relating to Agriculture, now in Practice in the best cultivated Counties, with some Accounts of the successful Culture of Lucerne, Cabbages, &c. &c. Intended for the Use of the Common Farmers of Ireland. Abridged at the Request of the Dublin Society

By John Wynn Baker, F.R.S. Folding engraved frontis. 15, [1], 328 pp. 8vo, cont. sprinkled calf, spine gilt. Dublin: S. Powell, 1771. First edition of this amalgamation of Young's Six Weeks Tour through the Southern Counties (1768) and Six Month' Tour through the North of England (1769). Baker (d. 1775) published several works suggested by Young under the auspices of the Dublin Society. "Arthur Young thought all these books very valuable...and would have been pleased to edit them for publication in England, where they were very scarce, if he could have found a bookseller prepared to guarantee him against loss, but he could not do so. His opinion was shared by the Royal Society, which elected Baker a Fellow in 1771, and by the Royal Society of Arts."-Fussell, II, p. 53. "Young was an honorary member of the Dublin Society and probably attended some of its meetings. He praised the Society for many of its activities but felt that it spent too much of its generous parliamentary appropriations upon manufacturing and commerce and too little on agriculture. He especially criticized its attempts to foster the silk manufacture. He urged the Society to re-establish a model farm like that formerly operated by John Wynn Baker, but preferably located in a wasteland, not near Dublin. It should not attempt experiments but should rather exhibit practices well established. He also proposed a series of premiums to stimulate Irish agriculture -- for the culture of turnips, beans, and flax as parts of rational crop rotations, for the improvements of mountain and bog lands, and for tree planting."-Gazley, The Life of Arthur Young, pp. 121-22. The engraved frontispiece plate, which is folding, depicts a number of farming implements. A very good copy and quite rare. .

Amsterdam, Arckstée & Merkus, 1771 - Octavo (202 × 128 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with panels of plain and broken lines, foliate tools at the corners, enclosing a floral device, foliate rolls with pomegranates and grapes at the head and tail, red morocco lettering piece, gilt edge-rules, marbled edges. A superb copy, the spine just a touch sunned and slightly dry, very minor shelf-wear, internally beautifully fresh, the plates still resistant to unfolding. 3 folding engraved maps and plans to the first, 1 folding diagrammatic engraved plate to the second. The Macclesfield copy, with Shirburn Castle bookplate to the front pastedown and embossed stamp through the first few leaves. First Editions, both uncommon. Of the first named, COPAC has only the Bodleian and British Library copies, OCLC has nine locations and also a number of MS copies, including one made as late as 1812 held by Princeton. Of the second, COPAC lists just the BL, and OCLC locates six and one copy bound together as here. Du Puget exercised considerable influence on Guibert who in turn was the basis for many of du Teil's formulations for the development of the role of field artillery which saw practical implementation under Napoleon.

Together three volumes, octavo, the 'Voyage' in two volumes, with 24 maps and plates; half-titles in all three volumes; in fine contemporary French bindings of mottled calf, spines gilt, gilt arms on covers. Bougainville and Cook published together. The first French account of Cook's first voyage and the revised edition of Bougainville's narrative: a beautiful set in original French bindings with uniform provenance from a noble European library. The two works in three volumes were published as a coherent set, and the three volumes here have clearly always formed a set, with matching library labels showing continuous numbering, and matching coats-of-arms in gilt on their covers. Their bindings are complementary though not precisely uniform: exactly the same spine tools are used for the third volume, though in a sightly different pattern, while the edges of the third volume are stained red unlike the sprinkled blue edges of the first two.The first two volumes of the set contain the revised and augmented version of Bougainville's narrative of his circumnavigation, which had been published in its quarto format in 1771 (see previous entry). Often considered to be the "best" edition of the narrative, this second version adds a 'Discours préliminaire' on discoveries in the Pacific since Magellan which takes Cook's First Voyage (1768-71) into account. This copy corresponds to the first of the two distinct settings identified by Du Rietz in the Kroepelien catalogue. The third volume or Supplément contains the first French edition of the earliest published account of Cook's first voyage, the anonymous work nowadays attributed to the midshipman James Magra; the French edition adds an extensive 'Lettre de M. de Commerson à M. de La Lande. De l'île de Bourbon, le 18 avril 1771'. As Du Rietz points out in the Kroepelien catalogue, while there were two issues of this publication, one (as here) describing itself as the supplement to Bougainville's account, there is no evident priority between the two which should rather be seen as simultaneous issues.Magra's narrative of the Endeavour voyage, published first in London in the same year, was the first of a series of so-called "surreptitious accounts" of Cook's various voyages to appear in print, published anonymously some two months after the return of Endeavour and nearly two years before Hawkesworth's official account.

(Paris, France): Desnos, 1771. contemporary stiff paper wrappers. 12mo. contemporary stiff paper wrappers. 56. 8 pages. First edition (Wing 2, ICN 54-5349). Louis-Charles Desnos (1728-1805) was a typefounder, publisher, and cartographer of Paris. Desnos was most noted for his mapmaking, serving as mapmaker for the King of Denmark. This work is a history of the alphabet, tracing its history from the Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Greeks to the development of the Roman alphabet. It also traces the history of writing instruments. These remarks are prefatory to Desnos's advertisement of a new type of writing paper he had developed, and the last eight pages of this work describe that paper. Title written in pencil on front wrapper. Wrappers bent and chipped at edges, and soiled. Pencilled notations on inside back wrapper. Light foxing throughout text.

Parigi: Appresso Agostino Delalain, Pietro Durand, Gio: Claudio Molini. 1771. First Edition. Hardcover. In two volumes. 331pp; 340pp. Contemporary full mottled calf, sides with triple gilt fillets, ornate gilt spines, gilt inside dentelles. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Frontispieces, titles, dedication, nineteen inserted plates, nine full-page illustrations, head-pieces, tail-pieces, all by Gravelot and engraved by Ponce, Leveau, Le Roy, Rousseau, Henriquez, and others. Rubbing and scuffs to sides and edges, three small old ink stains to bottom edge of volume one, short corner tear to one leaf. Lacks the plate for the eighteenth canto and there are some very minor markings in ink to some of the plates. From what transpires from the two old inscriptions on the front endpapers this set was donated by the Vicar of a church near Brescia to a noted scholar and professor at the University of Brescia. The ink in the markings appears to be the same as the ink in the inscription. Likely the Vicar decided to censor some of the images. A good+ set. Gamba 948. Graesse VII.33. ; Octavo .

TRAVELS THROUGH THAT PART OF NORTH AMERICA FORMERLY CALLED LOUISIANA...ILLUSTRATED WITH NOTES CHIEFLY TO NATURAL HISTORY. TO WHICH IS ADDED BY THE TRANSLATOR A SYSTEMATIC CATALOGUE OF ALL THE KNOWN PLANTS OF ENGLISH NORTH AMERICA

London. 1771.. Two volumes. viii,407; [4],432pp. Half titles in each volume. Contemporary calf, spines gilt. Extremities rubbed. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedowns, modern bookplate on rear pastedowns. Some light foxing and toning. Very good plus. Bossu went to Louisiana in 1750 as a captain of the Marines. This narrative is comprised of a series of twenty-one letters to the Marquis de L'Estrade describing Bossu's life and travels in the vast Louisiana country from 1751 to 1762. Bossu's ventures ranged from Fort Chartres, in present-day Illinois, to Mobile, and along the Mississippi. His visit to New Orleans took place only thirty years after its founding, and he was able to gather considerable information from the memories of locals. "Bossu wrote well and his letters not only give an interesting picture of life in the Mississippi Valley and the Mobile Country to the east at the beginning of the second half of the eighteenth century, but incorporated also are many sketches of events in preceding years" - Streeter. This is the first English edition, to which Howes assigns the same "b" rating as the suppressed first edition of 1768. "The first volume is almost entirely filled with historical and personal sketches of the Southern Indian Tribes of the present United States" - Field. Almost all of the second volume of this edition is given over to the catalogue of plants, making it an important piece of American natural history. The catalogue, which does not appear in the first edition, was compiled by Johann Reinhold Forster, the well known German explorer and botanist, based on specimens of North American plants he saw in England, and on his translation of the work of Swedish botanist Pehr Lofling describing the plants he collected in northern South America in 1754-56. A handsome copy. CLARK II:5. SABIN 6465. SERVIES I, p.32. STREETER SALE 1518 (ref). HOWES B626, "b." MEISEL III, p.349. TAXONOMIC LITERATURE 1825, 4921. FIELD 157.

        LS ("Joseph Core[gent]").

Vienna, 3. III. 1771. - 4to (224 × 175 mm). 1 p. on a single bifolium. Addressed to Nicolaus Esterházy nicknamed "the Splendid", in German. - The later emperor Joseph II, famous for his enlightened and anti-clerical reforms, writes to Nikolaus Esterházy, the Hungarian prince and main patron of the composer Joseph Haydn, about another Hungarian noble, the count Christoph Erdödy, whose lavish lifestyle had forced him to borrow immense sums of money. Joseph complains that Erdödy’s "confused legal disputes" ("seine verwirrten Rechtshändel") seem to drag his own name into these affairs. He asks Esterházy to investigate Erdödy’s conduct and give him the warning that Joseph might be very displeased. Later in the 1770s Erdödy had to sell some of his land and estates. - Light browning, slight flaw to verso from opening of the seal (of which some remnants survive), but otherwise in fine and fresh condition. Provenance: Alfred Bovet (1831-91), his sale Charavay, 1887, lot 97.

Mantissa Plantarum altera generum editionis VI. & specierum editionis II.

Holmiae, L. Salvii, 1771. pp. (6), 143-588. Contemporary half calf, gilt ornamented spine with gilt lettered label. A fine copy of the second 'Mantissa' which was published separately, in a much too small edition. It is an indispensable supplement to the 'Species Plantarum'. It also contains tucked away a zoological appendix, in fact the second appendix 'Regni animalis appendix' (pp. 521-552). W. Junk in 1935 made a reprint of these two appendices 'Linné Systema Naturae: Appendices Zoologicae. Holmiae 1768-1771. together with a commentary. "Der II. Nachtrag enthält auf 32 Seiten 123 Tiere (34 Vertebrata, 49 Insekten... und 40 Vermes, die allerdings grössenteils Mollusken sind" (Junk p. 8).//The second 'Mantissa' is a very rare item. Already in 1916 Dr. W. Junk stated: 'Jetzt fast unauffindbar' and in his '5o Jahre Antiquar' he calls it a 'Rarissimum'./"Linnaeus should be granted the last word on his taxonomic method. The preface to the second part of his 'Mantissa', dated 1 September 1771, contains this summary, composed in 'the twilight of his life'. It is given here in Svenson's translation (1945): 'Some botanists talk loudly about the 'Natural Orders' in place of a method, but so long as there is no essential character of an order, by which the genera can be combined or distinguished from those of different orders, these orders remain as a bell without a clapper. However, their use in other respects may be of the greatest importance' (Stafleu, Linnaeus and the Linnaeans p. 139). Small piece of paper cut away and replaced at the lower margin of the title-page not affecting the text.//Provenance: Stamp of Joh. Eustach von Görtz, Prussian diplomat (1737-1821) on title-page.//Hunt 596; Hulth 25; Sandberg, A catalogue of the works of Linnaeus no. 114; Stafleu & Cowan 4831.
