Beobachtungen über das Gefühl des Schönen und Erhabenen (Observations on the Feelings of the Beautiful and the Sublime) [bound with] Träume eines Geistersehers, erläutert durch Träume der Metaphysik (Dreams of a Spirit-seer, Illustrated by Dreams of Metaphysics).

Friedrich Hartknoch, Riga 1771 - TP + [1]-110. Small Octavo. Third Edition (Warda 31). [bound with]Johann Fredrich Hartknoch, Riga und Mietau, 1766. TP + [3]-128/ Small Octavo. First Edition, Second Issue (Warda 42).Beobachtungen:The first edition of Beobachtungen was published by Kanter in 1764. It was in many ways, a response to EdmundBurke's A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origins of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beatiful, published in 1757. Kanter published a second edition of the work in 1766 and this third edition by Hartknoch came out in 1771. The book is divided into four sections, which consider the general nature of feelings of the sublime and the beautiful, the objects and situations etc. which evoke them, and the distinct perceptions of sublimity and beauty in the two sexes and also different nations, in both the ancient and the contemporary world. Träume eines GeistersehersKant's famous attack on the philosophical metaphysicians of his day was indirect - focusing rather on Swedenborg and criticizing him roundly for the same kind of errors then being made by philosophers. Swedenborg believed himself to be as familiarly acquainted with the beyond as with his own house. Was not the case the same with the philosophers? Kant believed himself to be in a position to explain these delusions, the one by the other, and so to get rid of both."So entirely did Kant look down upon Swedenborg and his contemporaries the metaphysicians that he merely played with them, handling them now with serious irony, now with sly humour, sometimes pouring upon them his gallish scorn and dealing them the sharpest blows of his cynical wit. Such a tone is only assumed by one who sees his subject far beneath him. So did Kant hold himself in regard to the metaphysicians, to general philosophical knowledge, yea even to knowledge itself as a whole." (M. Kronenberg: Kant; Sein Leben, and Seine Lehre: Beck, München, 1897 p. 163). Contemporary marbled boards with a dark red field and gilt lettering label to the spine. The head and foot of the spine along with the edges of the spine (most especially the front edge) are worn. With more than a half-page of notes (22 lines) to the front free endpaper written a small contemporary hand. The pages are lightly browned throughout. Overall, a charming copy of these two works by Kant - both published before the release of his first Critik in 1781. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands 1771 - Paper Dimensions: 14 x 20 in. Framed Dimensions: 29.5 x 23 in. Copperplate engraving with original hand-color. Catesby’s Natural History is considered to be one of the great achievements of natural science in the 18th century. They were the raw material for an unprecedented project: a scientific account of heretofore unknown wildlife, with illustrations taken from life. The text recorded his personal observations, as well as theories, legends, and folktales gathered over the course of a decade.

Zeitgenössischer marmorierter Pappband (etwas lichtrandig, Kapitale berieben). 20 Bll., 151 (+1) S., mit 1 gestochenen Karte und 52 teils ausfaltbaren Kupfertafeln. Sehr gutes Exemplar. Erste Ausgabe.

The Natural History of Carolina, Florida & The Bahamas Volume II. 1771 - Paper Dimensions: 12.25 x 17.75 in. Framed Dimensions: 22 x 25.5 in. Copperplate engraving with original hand-color. Catesby’s Natural History is considered to be one of the great achievements of natural science in the 18th century.Exploring most of what is now Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas and the Bahamas, Catesby recorded his research in notebooks that he filled with drawings and the packing-cases of preserved speciments. They were the raw material for an unprecedented project: a scientific account of heretofore unknown wildlife, with illustrations taken from life. The text recorded his personal observations, as well as theories, legends, and folktales gathered over the course of a decade.

Voyage autour du Monde, par la Frégate du Roi La Boudeuse et la Flûte L'Étoile; en 1766, 1767, 1768 & 1769.

Paris, Saillant & Nyon, 1771. 4to. Near contemp. hcalf. Gilt spine with gilt lettering. Very light wear along edges. Stamps on title-page. (8, incl. htitle),417,(1) pp., 20 engraved maps and charts (numb. 1-19 + 16 bis) of which 18 are folded, including the large world map. 2 engraved plates (numb. 1-2). Internally clean and fine, a few leaves with marginal brownspots. First edition of this famous circumnavigation, being the first voyage around the world with professional naturalists and geographers aboard. Bougainville was the first Frenchman, to sail around the world. In 1771, Bougainville published his travel log from the expedition under the title "Le voyage autour du monde, par la frégate La Boudeuse, et la flûte L'Étoile". The book describes the geography, biology and anthropology of Argentina (then a Spanish colony), Patagonia, Tahiti and Indonesia (then a Dutch colony). The book was a sensation, especially the description of Tahitian society. Bougainville described it as an earthly paradise where men and women lived in blissful innocence, far from the corruption of civilisation.Bougainville's descriptions powerfully expressed the concept of the noble savage, influencing the utopian thoughts of philosophers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau before the advent of the French Revolution. Denis Diderot's book Supplément au voyage de Bougainville retells the story of Bougainville's landing on Tahiti, narrated by an anonymous reader to one of his friends. Diderot used his fictional approach, including a description of the Tahitians as noble savages, to criticise Western ways of living and thinking.Sabin, 6864.

Fantastic Pre-Revolutionary letter regarding funding for Harvard and Native Americans: "But as Harvard College will receive for the future … in extending this good work of Civilizing and Gospellizing the Indians"

Hackney, April 29, 1771. 7.25" x 9.5". "Letter Signed, ""Jasper Maudit,"" as treasurer of the New England Company, 2 pages, 7.25"" x 9.5"", Hackney, April 29, 1771, to Andrew Oliver, agent for the company who had just been recently installed as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. Clean fold separations, small loss at bottom left corner affecting text, else very good condition. Maudit, treasurer of The New England Company, a missionary organization charged with the Christian conversion and education of Native Americans, writes to Oliver concerning monies destined for a new missionary (""Mr. Kirkland""), funds directed toward Harvard for the same purpose as well as Oliver's resignation as secretary of the organization, thanking him for remaining in the post for an additional year to allow the company to seek a replacement. Maudit writes, in large part: ""… The Genl Court expressed their satisfaction at the way opening for the spreading the Gospel amongst the Indians and conciliating their minds to the English Interest. Mr. Kirkland's Character is very pleasing and we hope he will continue an useful Missionary. Dr. Wheelock's misapplication of the Money Collected here was resented in the Genl Court, and must have a very bad effect on any future Collections for America. The Company have ordered £750 to be remitted for the Curr[en]t Service on Account of your advance to Mr. Kirkland tho' our Income doth not exceed £700 pr Ann. — But as Harvard College will receive for the future, by the Increase of the Rent from Dr. Williams's Estate a clear £150. p[e]r Ann[um]. Sterling, they will have sufficient to bear the whole Expence [sic] of Mr. Kirkland's Mission, (and we moreover hope That they and our Commissioners will prevail with the Scotch Society to join them in extending this good work of Civilizing and Gospellizing the Indians,) especially as the College have £1000 in hand of the Doctor's donation unapplied. The latter part of your Letter intimating your intent to resign, was received with no small concern by the Genl. Court, we cannot part with the Services of one who has so zealously attended to, and forwarded the great business of our appointment with such general satisfaction, but with regrett [sic] — I am glad to find you have agreed to continue another Year, and I wish you would add one more; but if this cannot be complied with, I hope you will continue untill [sic] some others fit and willing to act in this important business, shall be recommended to the Company to make choice of one of them for their Treasurer …"" Andrew Oliver had been appointed Lieutenant Governor in 1770 (his commission was dated October 19, 1770 and he was sworn in on March 14, 1771.) Thomas Hutchinson was sworn in as Governor the same day: ""Harvard congratulated them, and the students gathered in Holden Chapel and sang appropriately: 'Thus saith the Lord: From henceforth, behold! All nations shall call thee blessed; for thy rulers shall be of they own kindred, your nobles shall be of yourselves, and thy governors shall proceed form the midst of thee.' Of all the rulers of Massachusetts whom Harvard has contributed there have been no better and more able, yet more unfortunate men than this pair."" (Sibley's Harvard Graduates, vol. 7, p. 407) Jasper Maudit (1696-1771) was a London merchant and religious ""dissenter"" who served as the agent for Massachusetts Bay from 1762 to 1765. He also served as treasurer of the New England Company. (See Jasper Maudit Agent in London for the Province of the Massachusetts Bay 1762-1765, 1918; Craig Yirush, Settlers, Liberty, and Empire: The Roots of Early American Political Theory… 2011, p. 1; Philip F. Gura, Jonathan Edwards: America's Evangelical, 2006, p. 175) Oliver Cromwell commissioned the New England Company in 1649 and was granted a Royal Charter after the restoration of the monarchy by Charles II in 1662. The company's charter provided for the promotion and propagation of 'the Gospel of Christ unto and amongst the heathen natives in or near New England and parts adjacent in America."" To this end the company sent missionaries not only to New England but to New York and Virginia as well. Until the outbreak of the Revolutionary War in 1775, the North American administration was run by the Governor of Massachusetts. Following American independence, the company refocused its activities on the remaining North American British colonies in Canada and the West Indies: a mission it continues to fulfil to the present day (see http:///www.newenglandcompany.org for more information)."

An Essay on the First Principles of Government, And on the Nature...

1771. 2nd ed. London, 1771. Priestley's First Substantial Political Work, An Influence on the Constitutional Thought of the American Founding Fathers Priestley, Joseph [1733-1804]. An Essay on the First Principles of Government, And on the Nature of Political, Civil, And Religious Liberty. London: Printed for J. Johnson, No. 72, In St. Paul's Church Yard, 1771. xvi, 300, [4] pp. Includes two-page publisher advertisement. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5"). Later quarter speckled calf over speckled-paper boards, lettering piece and gilt fillets to spine, endpapers renewed. Very light soiling to boards, a few tiny gouges to board edges, some chipping to spine ends, corners bumped and lightly worn, hinges partially cracked. Moderate toning to text, light foxing in a few places, internally clean. $500. * Second (stated) edition, one of two issues from 1772, and the third edition overall if one includes the Dublin reissue of the first edition (1768). First published in London in 1768, Priestley's Essay was his first substantial political work, one that influenced several American founding fathers, such as John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. It expands the humanitarian beliefs in his Essay on a Course of Liberal Education (1765), which took issue with the authoritarian educational philosophy favored by John "Estimate" Brown in his Thoughts on Civil Liberty. Priestley argues for a liberal political philosophy as a matter of morality and a prerequisite for social progress. Adams and Jefferson owned copies of this book. A note in Sowerby says Jefferson often recommended it to others and cites a letter from 1802 in which he says it expressed the principles of the U.S. Constitution and their practical development in many of its articles.

Chez M. Magérus, Libraire MDCCLXXI [1771], Amsterdam - Rare French Edition of the first compendium of fruit arboriculture with 39 folding copper-engraved plates in fine contemporary hand coloring. Two foolscap-folio volumes bound in one: [ii],160,[iv],161-205,[1], with 19 plates (quince, cherry, plum, fig, currant, almond, chestnut, apricot, and other fruits and nuts) and large woodcut tailpieces; [ii],339 [i.e. 139]pp, with 20 plates by Jacob Folkema and Jan Caspar Philips (showing 103 apple varieties and 82 varieties of pears, with such evocative name as red apple paradise, Queen of England, siren lemon, and Mrs. Thigh). Title and preface from the Leeuwarden edition of 1766 bound in between Rr2 and Ss. Elegantly bound in early mottled calf, spine richly gilt in seven compartments divided by raised bands, green morocco lettering piece gilt, edges stained red, plain period end papers. An excellent copy of a superb production, the only notable flaw being three plates and several quires, as well as end papers and fly leaves, evenly browned. Hunt 620. Nissen BBI 1077 and 1079. Landwehr (Dutch Books with Coloured Plates) 90 and 94. Bunyard, Guide to the Literature of Pomology, p. 439. Oak Spring Pomona, p. 131. Burnet III 681. Both titles often found bound together. First published at Leeuwarden, in Dutch, in 1758 (Nissen BBI 1077). Knoop was head gardener to the Dowager Princess of Orange at Marienburg and is considered, with Duhamel du Monceau, the father of pomology. Especially with the Pomologia, he broke new ground: Knoop was first to publish scientific explanations of apples and pears from Dutch, German, English and French regions. The book's many beautiful illustrations almost appear three-dimensional through the use of shadow effects. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition.
