London: The Natural History of Carolina, Florida & The Bahamas Volume II. 1771 - Sheet Dimension: 20 x 14 in. Frame Dimension: 29.5 x 23.5 in. Copperplate Engraving with Original hand-color. Catesby’s Natural History is considered to be one of the great achievements of natural science in the 18th century. In 1725, he extended his research to the Bahamas. The notebooks that he filled with drawings and the packing-cases of preserved speciments were the raw material for an unprecedented project: a scientific account of heretofore unknown wildlife, with illustrations taken from life. The text recorded his personal observations, as well as theories, legends, and folktales gathered over the course of a decade.

This volume is a truly remarkable finding: the binding is colonial artisanal production, preserved in its absolutely original condition; the title is naively illustrated with natural history scenes (different types of birds, fishes, and a rabbit), and is done with a very accomplished calligraphy. It records the marriages happened during the last years of the 18th century and beginnings of the 19th, from the towns of Asumpcion Aculco y Sa Maria Magdalena Atlosolpan, the church of Santa Cruz de Acatlan (Naucalpan), including the temples in Indian districts of San Juan Bautista (San Juan o San Juanico Nextipac), Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Aculco, Iztapalapa) and Santa Maria Magdalena Atlasolpa (Magdalena Atlasolpa, Iztapalapa). The ledger is mostly about the marriages occurred in Iztapalapa and Naucalpan. The Nahuatl town of Naucalpan was an Aztec founded village in the outside northwest of Tenochtitlan. During the Spanish colony, Naucalpan was one of the most important evangelization sites. Now is a city and municipality located northwest of Mexico City in the adjoining State of Mexico. The Indian town of Iztapalapa was a Pre-Hispanic village in the shores of the Texcoco Lake nearby Mexico City that would become a "corregimiento" (colonial country subdivisions for administrative purposes) headed by Mexicaltzingo and later an Alcaldia Mayor.

Chavanne 4635; JCB 3966; Sabin 31184; cf. Lande, Canadiana 1220 (first edition). A Dutch edition of Hearne's expedition in search of the Northwest Passage and the fabled coppermines. A masterpiece in the literature of exploration, it contains interesting details on natural history and the Indian tribes of the region. Travelling overland from the Hudson Bay to the Arctic, Hearne met with many dangers, and very realistically describes the life and customs of the North American Indians. Tracing the Coppermine River, he reached the Arctic Ocean on 17 July, 1771, thus establishing that there was no Northwest Passage through Hudson Bay. In spite of the obvious importance of Hearne's expedition, the results were only published in 1795, after La Pérouse had discovered Hearne's manuscript at Hudson Bay. The present Dutch edition was translated from Johann Reinhold Forster's expertly annotated German edition.Tickets to back pastedowns. Some wear to bindings. An excellent crisp and clean set.

¶ Cat.       UniCat Belgium (7 copies); not in KVK/WorldCat. Rare work detailing the Antwerp Feast of Our Lady of Victory on 7 October 1771, commemorating the Battle of Lepanto (7 October 1571), where the Holy League famously defeated the Ottoman fleet off the coast of western Greece. It opens with an account of the battle, followed by detailed descriptions of the commemorative festivities. At the time of the battle, the Ottoman Empire was regarded as a serious threat to Christendom and the victory encouraged false hopes of its imminent collapse. Pope Pius V instituted the annual Feast of Our Lady of Victory, which was changed into Our Lady of the Holy Rosary under Gregory XIII, and is today known as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.         Archive of Documents and Correspondence of Antoine Guerry Duclaud, native of La Rochefoucauld, French Officer, Deserter, Slave Trader and Plantation Owner in Surinam, beginning with his arrival in Surinam in 1771, to 1775

Archive of manuscript documents, correspondence, etc., 46 items, 162 pages, text in French and Dutch, from Surinam 1771-1775. Archive of manuscript materials which document the life of Antoine Guerry Duclaud, a French officer, who had destered, and travalled to Surinam via Guinea, with 12 slaves to set up as a planter in that colony. He settled in the coastal city of Paramaribo. Surinam was a center of the slave trade. Duclaud arrived in Surinam at a time of great distress occasioned by an increase in raids upon the plantations of the colony by an "army" of some "three to four thousand escaped slaves", called Maroons or "Djukas", some three to four thousand, who swept down upon the planters to seize goods, and who killed every white person who fell into their hands, in what Duclaud describes as "very imaginative ways." Surinam had some 200 plantations the work on which was performed by some 13,000 slaves. The plantations produced, sugar, coffee, cocoa and cotton. Conditions for the slaves were by every measure horrific, life expectancy for slaves in South America was extremely short. Climate, working and living conditions, and disease were especially deadly. Duclaud describes the tense situation in detail, each household was required to be armed and to help patrol the colony. Duclaud does not become a planter, but instead goes into business renting the slaves he brought with him from Guinea. The economic conditions of the colony worsen as the violence increases. Duclaud becomes depressed as the prospects worsen in his new home, he jumps at the chance to return to Europe, when his sisters inform him of the possibility of a pardon for deserting. Duclaud sells his property, house, furniture and slaves and returns to France in 1775. The archive presents a rare look at slavery and conditions in 18th century colonial Surinam. Duclaud's Residence and Plantation in Surinam 7 manuscript documents, Paramaribo, Surinam 1772-1774, in French, folio, 23 pages. Details the expenses incurred for my house including furniture and other commodities. Rare and interesting documents which detail the materials used to build the house, and the purchase of its furnishings. And a similar document in Dutch, folio, 9 pages. Contract made with "sieur Dupuy" a gentleman, before returning to Europe, yielding his effects, and the lease of his home and shop. But as Mr. Dupuy could not honor his purchase, the entirety was finally sold to Mr. Pujol. The document bears the signatures of the interested parties as well as witnesses. Folio, 4 pages. 3 documents, in Dutch, wills and powers of attorney. Folio, 10 pages. Transport of Slaves Autograph Document signed by Captain Ary van den Pot, Paramaribo, 20 December, 1771, one sheet oblong octavo, in Dutch. Captain Pot's receipt of 300 florins for the transport of slaves. This was the price paid by Guerry Duclaud to bring his twelve slaves from Guinea to Surinam, although two of them died during the voyage. SurinamLong detailed Autograph letter signed from Guerry Duclaud, Paramaribo, October 20, 1772, to his sisters in La Rochefoucauld, folio, 3 ½ closely written pages. Duclaud recounts in great detail his adventure thus far: "Mes tres cheres Seurs, ? Duclaud writes at length about his family, his acquaintances, his desire to be married, to repay the money he owes to certain traders, and the costs and difficulties of his financial affairs. Especially the maintenance of his 10 slaves, several of whom he rents: "? je n'ay à la maison que 6 nègres, 4 filles et 2 hommes, j'en ay 2 qui sont loués a un capitaine de navire qui gagne chacun 24 sols par jour, 2 qui sont chez un maître charpentier pour 2 ans sans en retirer un sol bien au contraire, je paye 100 florins par tete pour chaque ?" Duclaud, Guerry, Autograph Letter Signed, Paramaribo, April 1773, to his sisters in La Rochefoucauld, quarto, 3 pages. Not having received a reply to his previous letter, Duclaud writes another, six months later, which describes the events recounted in his earlier letter, but with les detail, his departure from Guinea with several slaves he had purchased, his arrival in Surinam and the revolt of the slaves, his wish to return to Europe, when he would no longer be considered a deserter, news of his family and of hs new "petite entreprise" - renting slaves: "? Duclaud, Guerry, Autograph Letter Signed, Paramaribo, March 18, 1774 to his sisters in La Rochefoucauld, folio, two pages A year later, Duclaud received news from his family, of his return to grace which makes him wild with joy. He then decided to sell everything and return to France. He paints a dark picture of the state of the colony in Surinam: "? The letter continues as Duclaud envisages his new life in his native country.         VOYAGE AUTOUR DU MONDE, PAR LA FRÉGATE DU ROI LA BOUDEUSE ET LA FLUTE L'ÉTOILE, EN 1766, 1767, 1768 & 1769

Paris: Saillant & Nyon, 1771. [8],417,[3]pp. with twenty-three maps and plates. Half title. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt, leather label. Minor shelf wear. Small contemporary bookplate of the Duc de Decrès on front pastedown. Very minor foxing in margins of half title and last leaf. A remarkably bright and clean copy. Fine. First edition of this important work. Bougainville first undertook an expedition to the Falkland Islands and Patagonia, at his own expense, to secure them for French colonization. To avoid possible conflict due to Spain's envy of this acquisition, France gave up the territory to her. The narrative of that expedition was related in THE HISTORY OF A VOYAGE TO THE MALOUINE ISLANDS... (Paris, 1770). After delivering the Falklands to Spain, Bougainville was ordered across the Pacific to the East Indies, and then home. The completion of the three-year voyage marked the first official French circumnavigation and inspired much French interest in the Pacific islands. The party collected abundant natural history information concerning the regions visited; a chapter on the Falklands gives the history of their settlement as well. The expedition stopped at many South Sea islands, among them Tahiti, and included is a long section on that island as well as a vocabulary of the natives. Bougainville was in Buenos Aires when the order arrived for the expulsion of the Jesuits from Paraguay, which he describes in detail. An extraordinary capstone to this remarkable voyage was that Bougainville lost only seven out of two hundred men. "Bougainville also touched at the Moluccas, Batavia, and Mauritius before he arrived once again in France in 1769. Although Bougainville made only a few important discoveries, he created a great deal of interest among the French in the Pacific, which resulted in the voyages of Marc-Joseph Marion de Fresne and Jean François de La Pérouse. The largest island in the Solomons and two straits in the Pacific bear his name, and the tropical flowering vine called bougainvillea was also named for him. Bougainville later took part in the American Revolution, survived the French Revolution, and was made a senator and count of the Empire by Napoleon I. Bougainville's accounts of Pacific Islanders in this work echoed Jean Jacques Rousseau's concepts of the 'noble savage,' and inspired Denis Diderot to write his denunciation of European contact with indigenous peoples" - Hill. This copy belonged to Admiral, later Duc, Denis Decrès, Napoleon's Minister for the Navy and the Colonies from 1801 to 1814, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Decrès was the Minister directly responsible for Nicholas Baudin's voyage to Australia. Therefore, there could have been much instructive value in the present volume for Decrès, who perhaps used Bougainville's experiences with regard to Baudin, to assist in the various enquiries into voyage events, many of them relating to Baudin's unfortunate command. A highly distinguished French naval provenance for one of the country's legendary travel narratives. HILL 163. SABIN 6864. O'REILLY & REITMAN 283. BORBA DE MORAES, p.115. DU RIETZ 117. COX I, p.55.

Voyage autour du Monde, par la frégate du roi La Boudeuse, et la flûte l'Etoile; en 1766, 1767, 1768 & 1769

Paris: chez Saillant & Nyon, 1771. Half-title lightly stained, one or two spots and repairs, but an extremely good copy.. Quarto, with twenty engraved charts, mostly folding, and three plates of boats; in a well-preserved contemporary French binding of cat's-paw mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments between raised bands, brown leather label. The first French circumnavigation and the beginning of French exploration of the golden age, and of French involvement in the Pacific. This is the first edition of Bougainville's narrative account of his great voyage; its publication created enormous interest in Europe and was largely responsible for building up the romantic vision of a South Sea paradise where Rousseau's noble savage lived in a state of blissful innocence.Bougainville's expedition passed through the Strait of Magellan in January 1768. After some time looking for the mythical "Davis Land", said to be off the Chilean coast, they started on a direct route across the Pacific. They discovered the Tuamotus, sighted Tahiti in April, then visited Samoa, sailed through Melanesia, sighted the Great Barrier Reef, and passed through the Solomons and New Britain, to Batavia.Bougainville, not knowing of Wallis's stop there a year earlier, thought that he had discovered Tahiti, and his lengthy account of the island group is an interesting counterpart to Wallis's account. The vocabulary of three hundred words that he prints is the first such vocabulary of any Polynesian language to appear. It was only the Great Barrier Reef that prevented Bougainville landing on Australian soil. He had specifically set out to reach "New Holland" by running west from Quiros's "Espiritu Santo", but turned away from the obvious barrier presented by the reef. Had he made it, 'he would have come to the Australian coast near Cooktown, and would, likely enough, have been wrecked where Cook was wrecked two years later?' (Wood).

Lacking the frontispiece, otherwise in good condition.

Meyling, a letterpress title-page with an emblematic engraved vignette by Reinier Vinkeles. Extra added in this copy are an additional letterpress title-page, also dated "1783", but with a portrait of Pieter Pijpers engraved by Theodorus Koning dated 1789, accompanied by the letterpress explanatory leaf with a poem "Op myne afbeelding door Theodorus Koning", dated 1789, signed by Pijpers in brown ink. Further with 3 extra added engraved plates, plus 1 repeated in an earlier state with no lettering, depicting scenes from the play by various Dutch artists (A. Fokke, H.L. Myling, W. Immink, A. Hulk Jacobsz), 1 dated 1784. And finally with 6 engraved plates by various French artists, made for the original French edition. The engraved title is richly coloured and highlighted with gold (incl. the lettering) by a contemporary hand. The six French plates are splendidly coloured and highlighted with gold and gum arabic by a contemporary hand. Contemporary half calf, gold-tooled spine.

Van Aken, Cat. Ned. Toneel II, p. 351 (mentioning only a title-vignette); Moderne Encyclopedie van de Wereldliteratuur, vol. 7, p. 239; STCN (8 copies, only 3 with engr. title). Splendid copy, luxuriously extra-illustrated 5 years after the original publication, of the first edition of Pijpers's Dutch adaptation of Marmontel's 1771 Zémire et Azor, a version of the fairytale, Beauty and the beast. It is signed in brown ink by the author, and on the last page by G. de Visscher as a warrant of authenticity.STCN notes that some copies, like ours, have 2 additional folia: an illustrated typographical title-page (with Pijpers's roundel portrait on a monument) and a poem by Pieter Pijpers, entitled "Op Myne afbeelding", dated 1789. Apart from these extra leaves, our copy is embellished with 6 plates with scenes of the play from the original French edition of Marmontel's play, published in Paris, 1771, here all beautifully coloured, and with 3 extra plates by Dutch artists, probably made to illustrate a third edition; a second edition appeared in 1786.Zémire and Azor was a comical opera in 4 acts composed by the Belgian composer André Grétry, with a French text by Jean François Marmontel (1723-1799), based on Jean Marie Prince de Beaumont's 1756 La belle et la bête and P.C. The opera was first performed on 9 November 1771, stayed in the French repertory until at least 1821 and enjoyed worldwide success. With the circular morocco bookplate of P. May, with his interlaced monogram in gold, and the blind stamp of a private Dutch collection on the endpapers. With generous margins and many deckles intact. In very good condition, with only occasional very minor spotting and a water stain in one of the blank guard leaves protecting the coloured plates. Corners bumped and back board rubbed. Desirable, extra-illustrated Dutch Beauty and the beast, incorporating lavishly coloured Dutch and French plates.

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charl [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A church musician, printer, and publisher, "Bayley began a prolific career as a compiler by bringing out A New and Complete Introduction... (Newburyport, 1764-8), a composite drawn from successful works by other compilers. In 1768 he published Tans'ur's Royal Melody Compleat... then combined it with Aaron Williams's Universal Psalmodist... and under the title The American Harmony issued four editions between 1769 and 1774. Towards the end of the American Revolution, Bayley pirated the title and partial contents of another popular work, Andrew Law's Select Harmony (Cheshire, CT, 1779), despite Law's vigorous protest. Bayley compiled five other tune books as well as two tune supplements for metrical psalters... and he published John Stickney's Gentleman and Lady's Musical Companion (Newburyport, 1774). His chief contribution was to circulate in New England a large repertory of mid-century British sacred music." Richard Crawford and Nym Cooke in Grove Music Online.

In 1768 he published Tans'ur's Royal Melody Compleat. then combined it with Aaron Williams's Universal Psalmodist. and under the title The American Harmony issued four editions between 1769 and 1774. Towards the end of the American Revolution, Bayley pirated the title and partial contents of another popular work, Andrew Law's Select Harmony (Cheshire, CT, 1779), despite Law's vigorous protest. Bayley compiled five other tune books as well as two tune supplements for metrical psalters. and he published John Stickney's Gentleman and Lady's Musical Companion (Newburyport, 1774).
