The Love Epistles of Aristaenetus. Translated from the Greek into English metre.

1771 - J. Wilkie, 1771. 8vo., choicely bound in full burgundy morocco by Riviere, French fillet border to boards, spine richly gilt in compartments, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers with rich gilt turn-ins. pp. xvi, 174, bound with half-title but lacking final advertisement leaf. A handsome copy. First edition in English of the translation by N. B. Halhed, revised by Richard Brindsley Sheridan. Aristaenetus is the reputed author of two books of so-called Love Letters which were first edited by Sambucus (Antwerp, 1566). This collection of mildly racy adventures, edited, finessed and refined by Sheridan from the original translation of Nathaniel Brassey Halhed, a contemporary of Sheridan's from Harrow. From an old bookseller's description pasted in: "First and only separate edition of Sheridan's first work, published at the age of twenty. Allibone says: 'In conjunction with his friend H. Halhed he made translations of Theocritus (never printed) and of these they soon afterwards added English versions (in verse) of the Love Epistles of Aristenaetus. The latter have been recently published in the same volume with (recent translations of ) the Elegies of Propertius, the Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter, and the Kisses of Johannes Secundus. The firm also produced a play.None of these, however, were given to the world, save the Love Epistles which were published in August 1771 (See Nichols' Lit Anec.VIII, 365) - published, but not sold, and great was the disappointment of the youthful authors.'" From the library of E. F. Carry with his bookplate. Carry was a noted bibliophile and philanthropist, with a great interest in Irish history and literature. Upon his death the larger part of his extensive collection was bequeathed to the University of St. Mary of The Lake, in Illinois. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Love Epistles of Aristænetus: Translated from the Greek into English Metre

London: J. Wilkie, 1771. First edition. [iii]-xvi, 174 pp., lacking half-title and 1 p. publisher's advertisements. 8vo. 19th-century full red morocco, covers with central blind-stamped ornaments, spine gilt, t.e.g. Spine darkened and rubbed, a few marginal stains to text. First edition. [iii]-xvi, 174 pp., lacking half-title and 1 p. publisher's advertisements. 8vo. Sheridan family copy. A Sheridan family association copy of the first edition of Sheridan's first book, a translation of the Love Letters of Aristaenetus. This copy belonged to William Stirling-Maxwell (1818-1878) and his wife Caroline Norton (1808-1877), who was the granddaughter of Sheridan. Her father, Thomas Sheridan, was the only son of Sheridan and his first wife, Elizabeth Ann Linley. Caroline Norton wrote poetry, novels, and plays, and her campaigns for social reform led to the passing of the Custody of Infants Act in 1839, the Matrimonial Causes Act of 1857, and the Married Women's Property Act of 1870. Her first marriage, to George Chapple Norton in 1827, was an unhappy one, but she was unable to secure a divorce until his death. She did not marry the author and statesman William Stirling-Maxell until 1877, three months before her death. Aristaenetus is the reputed author of two books of so-called Love Letters which were first edited by Sambucus (Antwerp, 1566). The present translations are generally short and mildly bawdy adventures, the result of a collaboration between Halhed and his friend from his Harrow days, the 20-year-old Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Presumably, Halhed, the Orientalist, provided the translations from the Greek, and Sheridan polished the verse. Rothschild 1843; Williams, p. 210. Provenance: William Stirling-Maxwell, 9th Baronet of Pollok, husband of Caroline Norton (armorial binding); Carlotta Chiara Mary Norton, granddaughter of Caroline Norton (gift inscription on verso of flyleaf, "J & A from Carlotta Norton"); Louis & Anne Marie Davidson (bookplate)

To the Captains, other Officers & Seamen, who (with a detachment of Boats from the Fleet commanded by Admiral Boscawen) Burnt the Prudent & Took the Bienfaisant in Louisbourgh Harbour, about 1 o'Clock in the morning of the 26th. July 1758. In Memory of that Singular & Brave Action. This Representation is humbly Inscribed, By their Most Obedient Servant Richd. Paton

London: John Boydell, 1771. Copper-engraving by Pierre-Charles Canot after Paton. Sheet size: 16 1/2 x 24 inches. Repair to the lower right corner with minor facsimile. A very fine representation of one of the most decisive moments in the French & Indian War.Paton (1717-1791) specialized, with great success, in depicting great British naval encounters. The capture of Louisbourg, at the mouth of the St. Lawrence, was the first of two tasks that the British had to overcome in their battle for control of Canada. The present action during the early hours of 26 July 1758 led to the capitulation of the town, thus opening up the river all the way to Quebec (the second target) which was to fall to General Wolfe's assault the following year. The text beneath the print goes into some detail: "Captn. Laforey with 25 Boats Attack'd and took the Prudent of 74 Guns, but finding her aground, was obliged to burn her ... Captn. Balfour with 25 Boats Attack'd, Took and Towed off the Bienfaisant of 64 Guns into the N.E. Harbour, then in possession of the British Troops." Paton's depiction of Louisbourg harbor in dead of night lit by the flames of the French battleship is a triumph of realism.Parker 61a, Spendlove, The Face of Early Canada ,Toronto: 1958, p. 12.

Paris: Saillant & Nyon, 1771 - Quarto (250 × 185 mm). Contemporary French catspaw calf, tan morocco label, spine gilt in compartments, triple-ruled gilt panel to boards, marbled endpapers and edges. Skilful restoration to spine ends, front joint and fore edge of rear board, 100 mm closed tear to one fold of the world map (facing p. 18), loss to bottom corner of sig. An excellent copy. With 20 maps and charts, most of them folding, and 3 engraved plates of boats. With the half-title, errata, binder's instructions, and approbation leaves; woodcut head- and tailpieces and historiated capitals. First edition of the first French circumnavigation. In 1766 Bougainville had been ordered to return to the Falkland Islands to formally deliver the French settlement to Spain, and afterwards to continue into the Pacific and around the world. He was in Buenos Aires when the order of the expulsion of the Jesuits of Paraguay arrived, which he describes in detail. He entered the Pacific in 1768 and landed on Tahiti, claiming it for France, unaware of the visit of Samuel Wallis nine months earlier. On Tahiti it was discovered that the botanist's valet was a woman, Jeanne Barre; she stayed with the expedition and became the first woman on record to have circumnavigated the globe. Bougainville continued due west through Samoa and the New Hebrides, eventually making the first recorded European encounter with the Great Barrier Reef. Turning north 100 miles from the coast of Queensland, he passed through New Guinea to the Solomon Islands, thence to the Moluccas where the Dutch allowed him to refit. Bougainville then proceeded to Djakarta, then to Mauritius and home to St Malo. Only seven of the original 200 crew died on the voyage. The book is notable for the influential description of Tahiti, which Bougainville christened New Cythera after the abode of Aphrodite. His account of the islanders "echoed Rousseau's concepts of the 'noble savage' and inspired Diderot to write his denunciation of European contact with indigenous peoples" (Hill).         Grey Fox Squirrel (Eastern Gray Squirrel) with Bahaman Orchid

printed for Benjamin White, London 1771 - Hand-coloured copper engraving, on fine laid paper. Very good condition apart from some very light soiling and mild rippling in the margins. Bottom of sheet slightly trimmed. A fine image from Catesby's "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands," "the most famous colour-plate book of American plant and animal life.a fundamental and original work for the study of American species" (Hunt). The nut-eating eastern gray squirrel primarily inhabits the hardwood forests of the eastern United States and Canada although it can also be found in Texas, California, and several mid-western states. Its nests are constructed of leaves and are usually built in the hollows and elevated crevices of trees. Trained as a botanist, Catesby travelled to Virginia in 1712 and remained there for seven years, sending back to England collections of plants and seeds. With the encouragement of Sir Hans Sloane and others, Catesby returned to America in 1722 to seek materials for his "Natural History"; he travelled extensively in the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and the Bahamas, sending back further specimens. His preface provides a lengthy account of the development of this work, including his decision to study with Joseph Goupy in order to learn to etch his plates himself, to ensure accuracy and economy. A lovely and important work, embodying the most impressive record made during the colonial period of the natural history of an American colony. The most significant work of American natural history before Audubon's "The Birds of America". Cf. Anker 95; cf. Clark I:55; cf. Dunthorne 72; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 86; cf.         Grant of arms donated by Stephen Martin Leake, Garter and Charles Townley, Clarenceux, Kings of Arms, to Roope Harris (1747-1821) of Bristol. Roope Harris became Roope Harris Roope afterwards.

United Kingdom, d.d. 20 september 1771. Vellum charter, 33x43 cm. Good condition. Copperplate hand engrossed, calligraphy, with large hand coloured coat-of-arms. Two wax seals of the mentioned kings of arms, in perfect condition, in decorated tin cases, attached to the document by silk ribbons. The charter comes encased in a contemporary oblong leather case, decorated with embossed, gilt patterns, lined with decorated coloured paper, broken at the hinges and worn. This charter confirms the coat-of-arms of Roope to Roope Harris of Bristol, who took the name and the coat-of-arms of Roope on 22 July 1771. Roope Harris (1747-1821), son of Ambrose Harris, son of Nicholas Harris of Dittisham, inherited the Roope estate at Greenway on the river Dart from Margaret Deeble (Margaret' Deebles Will 1777), so long as he agreed to take on the surname of Roope, hence the name 'Roope Harris Roope'. Roope Harris is the link between two branches of the Roope family, the Roope's of Little Dartmouth, Devon and the Roope's of Oporto, Dittisham, Kingswear etc. Greenway was bought by Agatha Christie in 1938 as a summer house for her and her husband Max Mallowan. The house is now owned by the National Trust. Greenway was previously owned by The Gilberts who finally sold Greenway around 1700 to Thomas Martyn, about whom nothing is known, but through him the property descended to the Roopes, a family of successful Dartmouth merchants. By 1780 Roope Harris Roope was the owner. He had apparently been born in Massachusetts (USA) and later travelled widely on business whilst also having 15 children, 6 of them born at Greenway. In 1791 Roope sold Greenway to Edward Elton, a Bristol merchant venturer and MP (his family also owned Clevedon Court). H168

OF THEIR INHABITANTS. TO WHICH IS ADDED, A CONCISE VOCABULARY OF THE LANGUAGE OF OTAHITEE.

London: Printed for T. Becket and P.A. De Hondt, in the Strand, 1771. - [2],ii,130,[3]pp. Quarto. Modern half calf and marbled boards. Expert paper repair at bottom of titlepage, slight scattered foxing. Very good, with the suppressed dedication leaf. The first published account of Cook's first voyage, and thus the first appearance of any narrative of this epochal voyage. It was issued two years before the official account by Hawkesworth. As it was printed anonymously shortly after the return of the Endeavor and without authorization, the question of authorship has plagued bibliographers for some time. Sabin is adamant in declaring that the author was not Sir Joseph Banks, nor Capt. Cook, nor Hawkesworth. Beaglehole and other Cook authorities seem to agree that the author was American sailor James Magra. Others insist on attributing the work to Richard Orton and William Parry, or to Solander and Banks. "It is the first work chronologically in a bibliography of Cook." - Hill. "The importance of this work cannot be overstated as it is not only the first published account of the voyage but it is also an interesting narrative of the expedition.[The first issue] is of the greatest rarity, and copies of the book containing the dedication are far more valuable than those without it" - Davidson. "Magra is the best voyage book" - Derek McDonnell. The dedication leaf to the Lords of the Admiralty which appears in this copy seems to indicate that the publication was officially sanctioned, which it was not. The second issue lacks the dedication leaf. An exceedingly important travel account, and extremely rare in its unsuppressed state. HILL 1066. SABIN 16242. HOLMES 3. BEDDIE 693.         The Love Epistles of Aristaenetus. Translated from the Greek into English metre.

      J. The latter have been recently published in the same volume with (recent translations of ) the Elegies of Propertius, the Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter, and the Kisses of Johannes Secundus...The firm also produced a play...None of these, however, were given to the world, save the Love Epistles which were published in August 1771 (See Nichols' Lit Anec.VIII, 365) - published, but not sold, and great was the disappointment of the youthful authors.'" From the library of E. F. Carry with his bookplate. Carry was a noted bibliophile and philanthropist, with a great interest in Irish history and literature. Upon his death the larger part of his extensive collection was bequeathed to the University of St. Mary of The Lake, in Illinois.

Le Poesie di Giorgio Baffo patrizio veneto

London or Venice: , 1771. Large 12mo (179x111 mm); 19th-century half calf, gilt spine with gilt title on red morocco label, marbled endpapers, marbled edges; [2], 250 pp. Collation: [title-page], B-Ii4, Kk1. Lacking the blank leaf Kk2. Outer margin of the title-page repaired, some marginal foxing and some browning on a few leaves, otherwise a very good copy.RARE FIRST EDITION, published posthumously and clandestinely, probably in Venice or, more likely, in London, as argued by some scholars, through the efforts of Consul Smith, a collector of paintings and a great lover of the Venetian literary culture. A second edition was issued in 1789 in London, while the complete edition of all Baffo's works in four volumes (Raccolta universale delle opere) appeared with the fake place Cosmopolis (Venice or London) in 1789 at the expenses of the Earl of Pembroke, a great admirer of the poet. Some of the poems, however, which had had an anonymous manuscript circulation while the author was still alive, have remained unpublished until today. Baffo refused a large sum offered to him by some British travelers who wanted to see his compositions printed, and it seems that in the last years of his life he also destroyed many of his papers.Born on August 1, 1694 into a family of the small Venetian aristocracy, Giorgio (Zorzi) Baffo completed his law studies and undertook the obvious professional career to which a man of his rank was entitled. After the first assignments in Peschiera and Asola, in 1732 he entered the Quarantie, particularly the criminal Quarantia. He used to walk in town wearing a toga and recite his poems in the cafés and shops, where his company was very much appreciated. He began to write poetry at a young age, in the name of a blasphemous and sacrilegious desecration and with a spirit of revenge against the conformism and social rigor that he was forced to endure in his position as a public official. His poetic motto, opposed to the boredom of Arcadian poetry, was "Cazzo ghe vol" ("Fuck is needed").Behind the ostentation of sexual freedom and an alleged natural liberty of man, behind the profound hatred for the ecclesiastical institutions, behind the skepticism towards the afterlife and the disenchantment with the human community, Baffo concealed a rebel spirit intolerant of the rigid rules of the Venetian society and a penchant for the new materialistic ideas of the Enlightenment. But above all, he wrote to amuse himself and his friends, desecrating, as few had done before, the religious and political authorities of his city. His Venetian dialect, his mother tongue, the only that allowed him the immediacy and spontaneity that he was seeking, is not the language of the people; it is a cultivated language, that Baffo shared with the other members of the small aristocracy also during the carrying out of his public duties. Baffo's language, as his culture, can be symbolically placed between the higher language of the ruling classes and the festive coarseness of people's parlance (cf. P. Del Negro, Introduzione, in: G. Baffo, "Poesie di Giorgio Baffo patrizio veneto", Milan, 1991, pp. 7-94).J.

["Nollet became the chief of the European electricians" (DSB, X p. 146)]. DSB [X p. 145 : "Nollet's 'Cours de physique' was perhaps the most popular exhibition of this kind ever given. With carefully orchestrated demonstrations performed on some 350 different instruments, the abbé entertained his enthusiastic auditor as, in the spirit of th Enlightenment, he undertook to dispel their "vulgar errors, extravagant fears and faith in the marvellous. These were not mere shows, as one sees from their expanded syllabus, the famous 'Leçons de Physique' which appeared in six volumes between 1743 and 1748 and wad often reprinted. The presentations are lively, comprehensive, and up-to-date, with full directions, for realizing the effects under study and excellent illustrations of apparatus"] ___________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________ENGLISH_DESCRIPTION______________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Contemporary full mottled calf, spine gilt in six compartments, title and volume number in gilt on lettering-pieces, red edges, marbled endpapers. He was for many years director of the Gobelins factory and inspector of the tapestry manufacturing at Beauvais; Boucher designed many tapestries as well costumes and sets for the theater.         Zoologia Britannica . Classis I quadupedia II aves.

Augsburg Johann Jacob Haid und Sohn -1778 1771 - Two volumes, folio (49.2 x 35.1 cm). Text in German and Latin, title printed in red and black, dedication leaf, 132 hand-coloured engraved plates by Haid after Paillou; some plate numbers, captions and imprints cropped, in one or two cases just touching the image, plates 106-108 with isolated stain, plate 114 bound out of order. Near contemporary half calf; slightly rubbed, an attractive example. Fine, fresh example of the German edition of Pennant's British Zoology, with the plates re-engraved by Haid, with vibrant original colour . From the library of the Sigmaringen castle, belonging to one of the most important European Princely family, the Hohenzollern. The House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen is the senior Swabian branch of the House of Hohenzollern and counts among its members a King of Romania and a Minister President of Prussia (Karl Anton, 1811-85). Bird books enjoyed great popular in the eighteenth century, both as works of scholarship and as splendid collectables for the libraries of wealthy connoisseurs. Amongst the finest was Pennant's British Zoology, his first and most spectacular work. The title is something of a misnomer for of the 132 plates, 121 are of birds. It was organized according to the classificatory systems of John Ray, whom Pennant much admired. Pennant believed in meticulous research and preparation and in the importance of high quality illustrations as an adjunct to his work. "The first coloured illustrations of birds in a book which attempted to list and portray all of the British species, many of them life-size. Peter Paillou contributed most of the designs and coloured the prints, the colour being extended to the trees, branches and foregrounds. These really splendid folio plates cost Pennant so much that the British charity school at Clerkenwell Green, for which the profits of the book were intended, came off rather badly, as did Pennant himself. Nevertheless they showed what could be done in the production of good, large pictures of British birds." (Jackson). Thomas Pennant (1726-1798) was a prolific author of natural history and topographical works. In his famous autobiography The Literary Life (1793) he states that he sometimes marvelled at his own industry. Cf. Thirteen years as an itinerant actor helped him polish his comic abilities while he began writing, combining Commedia dell'arte elements with the more refined French comedy.
