Plates vol. 8 Paris (1771) Folio, 253 x 393mm. 3 pages of descriptive text & 5 loose plates with their accompanying text sheet. Slight browning to margins, a little spotting otherwise very good. The 5 plates and descriptive text for the entry of Sculpture Fonte des Statues Équestres from volume VIII of plates. Plates are numbered 1-5. Plate 3 is continued on a second sheet, Plate 4 is a double plate, and plate 5 is a triple plate. 1 page (822) from volume XIV of the Encyclopà die (1765) including Observations sur les chevaux des statues à questres 2 pages (497 & 502) from volume XV of the Encyclopà die (1765) including information on Équestre Statue With some browning to a few leaves. This suite of plates is noteworthy as a record of the practises of sculptors of this period. The illustrations and their explanations are influenced heavily by the writing and descriptions of Germain Boffrand. Boffrand had served as the first architect of numerous 18th-century noblemen, and had been a witness to the casting of Louis XIV's statue by Giradon and Jean-Balthazar Keller. The statue was melted during the revolution, and only a smaller model remains, which can be found in the Musà e du Louvre. On hearing of the troubles Lemoyne was having casting a similar statue of Louis XV, Boffrand sought to assist Lemoyne, recognising that he was the only remaining assistant who had taken notes at the earlier casting. Boffrand wrote his Description de ce qui a à tà Practiquà pour Fondre en Bronze d'un Seul Jet la Figure Équestre de Louis XIV, enabling Lemoyne to complete his work, although this statue was also later destroyed in the Revolution. Diderot's plates, here presented, are an almost exact copy of Boffrand's originals, only shrunk and simplified to suit the Encylopà die's format. Included with these plates is the relevant entry for equestrian statues written by Jaucourt, the 18th-century aristocrat who wrote around one quarter of the Encyclopà die voluntarily.

Catesby’s Natural History is considered to be one of the great achievements of natural science in the 18th century. In 1725, he extended his research to the Bahamas. The notebooks that he filled with drawings and the packing-cases of preserved speciments were the raw material for an unprecedented project: a scientific account of heretofore unknown wildlife, with illustrations taken from life. The text recorded his personal observations, as well as theories, legends, and folktales gathered over the course of a decade.

This volume is a truly remarkable finding: the binding is colonial artisanal production, preserved in its absolutely original condition; the title is naively illustrated with natural history scenes (different types of birds, fishes, and a rabbit), and is done with a very accomplished calligraphy. It records the marriages happened during the last years of the 18th century and beginnings of the 19th, from the towns of Asumpcion Aculco y Sa Maria Magdalena Atlosolpan, the church of Santa Cruz de Acatlan (Naucalpan), including the temples in Indian districts of San Juan Bautista (San Juan o San Juanico Nextipac), Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Aculco, Iztapalapa) and Santa Maria Magdalena Atlasolpa (Magdalena Atlasolpa, Iztapalapa). The ledger is mostly about the marriages occurred in Iztapalapa and Naucalpan. The Nahuatl town of Naucalpan was an Aztec founded village in the outside northwest of Tenochtitlan. During the Spanish colony, Naucalpan was one of the most important evangelization sites. Now is a city and municipality located northwest of Mexico City in the adjoining State of Mexico. The Indian town of Iztapalapa was a Pre-Hispanic village in the shores of the Texcoco Lake nearby Mexico City that would become a "corregimiento" (colonial country subdivisions for administrative purposes) headed by Mexicaltzingo and later an Alcaldia Mayor.

The Hague, J.C. Leeuwenstijn, 1798. 2 volumes. 8vo. With folding map, hand-coloured in outline (41.5×50.5 cm), a folding map of the Coppermine River, and 2 folding views, all engraved and etched. Contemporary half sheepskin, gold-tooled spine.

Chavanne 4635; JCB 3966; Sabin 31184; cf. Lande, Canadiana 1220 (first edition). A Dutch edition of Hearne's expedition in search of the Northwest Passage and the fabled coppermines. A masterpiece in the literature of exploration, it contains interesting details on natural history and the Indian tribes of the region. Travelling overland from the Hudson Bay to the Arctic, Hearne met with many dangers, and very realistically describes the life and customs of the North American Indians. Tracing the Coppermine River, he reached the Arctic Ocean on 17 July, 1771, thus establishing that there was no Northwest Passage through Hudson Bay. In spite of the obvious importance of Hearne's expedition, the results were only published in 1795, after La Pérouse had discovered Hearne's manuscript at Hudson Bay. The present Dutch edition was translated from Johann Reinhold Forster's expertly annotated German edition.Tickets to back pastedowns. Some wear to bindings. An excellent crisp and clean set.

This fascinating work was prepared as a source book for authors and readers to understand the vocabulary relating to arms and armor in order to facilitate the writing and reading of tanka poetry. The woodcuts depict every aspect of arms (bows and arrows, swords, torches) and armor (helmets, breastplates, arm and leg guards, flags and banners). Minor worming but a very good set.

      - Chavanne 4635; JCB 3966; Sabin 31184; cf.
