Instrvctio [.] coetvi convocato ad conficiendam ideam novi legvm codicis.

Imp. Akad. Nauk Skt. Peterburg 1770 - Quarto (26.3 x 20.5 cm). Title pages in Russian, Latin, German and French, 403 pp. with 4 allegorical head- and tailpieces engraved by Christopher Melhior Roth after Jacob Shtelin; just a couple of leaves with light spotting. Contemporary full Russian calf, spine with raised bands stamped in bling, label lettered in Russian, handprinted endpapers, red edges; fully covered with clear adhesive film, dampstain to back cover. "The best and most luxurious edition" of Catherine's famous 'Great Instructions', such described by Count M.A. Korf, then director of the Imperial Library. First published and "signé de la propre main de Sa Majesté Impériale" in 1768; this edition however is the only in several languages and illustrated. These instructions were "largely compiled and adapted by Catherine personally from the texts of Montesquieu and Beccaria. Although the project was never brought to fruition, the impulse behind it stands as one of the nobler concepts of Catherine's reign" (Fekula 2013, for a later edition). A major document of the Enlightenment, it condemned torture and capital punishment and endorsed such principles as the equality of all before the law. The illustration consists of two detailed symbolic engravings, each repeated once, by Roth (d. 1798), an engraver from Nuremberg who mostly worked in Russia. "The most magnificent and desirable of the more than 40 editions of the Nakaz" (Widener) of "one of the most remarkable political treatises ever compiled and published by a reigning sovereign in modern times" (I. de Madariaga, Russia in the Age of Catherine the Great (1981), p. 151). Some great scholarly publications have taken place among these numerous editions, especially published in St. Petersburg in 1893 (using the French text from this edition) and 1907, as well as the more recent The Nakaz of Catherine the Great: Collected Texts (2010), with a bibliography of the 43 editions, edited by Butler and Tomsinov. Drage 208; Fekula 2013; Sopikov 6456 ('best edition'); SK 2151; Widener M., Yale Law School, Lillian Goldman Law Library, on their copy, exhibited in 2012. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Devotional miniature with autogr. inscription signed on verso, with eight additional devotional miniatures, all inscribed and signed on verso by other Archduchesses, mostly by daughters of Empress Maria Theresa.

No place, 1743-1770. - 8vo. 9 ff., each measuring c. 120 x 90 mm, carefully mounted under mattes bound in calf the late 19th century (with a description of the contents added at the end). In slipcase. A collection of devotional miniatures of outstanding quality, with dedications to countess Maria Anna von Callenberg, née countess Thurn-Valsassina (1721-86), first lady-in-waiting to Empress Elizabeth Christina, mother of Maria Theresa and since 1757 married to general Karl Kurt Reinicke, count Callenberg. Five of the nine miniatures are by daughters of Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I (thus uniting five out of eight princesses that survived infancy), one by a sister of Maria Theresa, another by the youngest sister of Francis I, yet another by the Imperial couble's daughter-in-law, and one by an unidentified writer. A scholarly study of the album, published in 1999 (cf. the sources below), praises the "outstanding graphic quality" of the miniatures, arguing that they must have been created by "professionally trained artists" (cf. Feldhaus, p. 19). - All inscriptions are in French or German; they include: 1) St. Cajetan (S. Cajetanus Thieneus), 3-line inscription signed by Archduchess Maria Amalia, Duchess of Parma (1746-1804), dated 1769. - 2) Charles Borromeo (S. Carolus Borromaeus), 6-line inscription signed by Archduchess Maria Anna (1718-1744), sister of Maria Theresa, dated 1743. - 3) St. Jerome (S. Hieronimus), 6-line inscription signed by Archduchess Maria Josepha (1751-67), dated 1767. - 4) Mother of Sorrows (Mater Dolorosa), 4-line inscription signed by Princess Anne Charlotte of Lorraine (1714-73), youngest sister of Emperor Francis I; undated. - 5) The Virgin and Child ("Du Königin des guten Raths bitt für uns"), 5-line inscription signed by Maria Theresa's eldest daughter, Archduchess Maria Anna (1738-89), dated 1757. - 6) King Stephen I of Hungary (S. Stephanus Rex Hung.), 5-line inscription signed by Maria Luisa of Spain (1745-1792), Grand Duchess of Tuscany and later Empress as the spouse of Leopold II; dated 1770. - 7) St. Expeditus (S. Expeditus), signed by Archduchess Maria Elisabeth (1743-1808), undated. - 8) St. Aloysius Gonzaga (S. Aloysius Gonzaga S. I.), 3-line inscription signed by Archduchess Marie Antoinette ("Auspice Deo. En regardant cette image souvenez vous toujours chère Callenberg de Votre très affectioner Antoine Archiduchesse"), dated 29 March 1770, but a month before her fateful departure for France. - 9) Man of Sorrows (Wahre Abbildung des schmerzhaften Heilands auf dem S. Stephansfriedhof), 2-line inscription, undated and unsigned, ascribed to Charlotte von Reischach, lady-in-waiting, by the included index (4to, 4 pp.). - Provenance: count Carl Callenberg (d. 1820), son of the recipient of these dedications; by descent to her daughter Henriette, the last countess of Callenberg (1764-1835), married in 1787 to count Johann Mittrowsky (1757-99), army surgeon to count Lássy's Infantry Regiment; by descent to the counts Mittrowsky; later in the library of the Austrian collector and Keeper of the Purse, count Franz Folliot de Crenneville-Poutet (1815-88), with his collection stamp on fol. 1; sold through the Vienna art trade to a Rhenish private collection in 1969. Irmgard Feldhaus, Gemalte Andachtsbilder aus dem Österreichischen Kaiserhaus aus den Jahren 1743-1770, in: Arbeitskreis Bild, Druck, Papier: Tagungsband Kassel 1998. Ed. by Christa Pieske et al.         The Passover Haggadah Containing the Ceremonies and Prayers which are used and read by all families in all houses of the Israelites, the Two first Nights of Passover: Faithfully Translated from the Original Hebrew. To which is added, the Explanations thereon.

London W. Gilbert for Alexander 1770 - Duodecimo in half sheets, (17 x 11 cm). lxxvii pp., frontispiece engraved by Terry, a bit spotted and stained, frontispiece slightly cropped. Contemporary calf spine over marbled boards; upper hinge splitting, rubbed; preserved in a new calf solander box with gilt lettering. The very first printing of the Haggadah in English. Very Rare. "This development is significant not only as a measure of the linguistic acculturation of English Jews by the latter part of the eighteenth century, but also as a break with previous policies. Only five years before, the publication of an English translation of the prayer-book prepared by Isaac Pinto had been thwarted by the conservative leaders of the Sephardic community. In their view only Spanish translations, hollowed the practice of centuries, were to be allowed." (Yerushalmi, Haggadah and History). This first English translation of the Haggadah, being also the first bilingual edition of the Haggadah, was translated by Alexander from Hebrew to English and published by him in 1770. It was issued in two editions - Ashkenazic, in which the hymns 'Adir Hu' and 'Had Gadya' appear in Yiddish at the end of the book, and the present Sephardic edition - without the hymns, but with inscriptions in Ladino (written in Hebrew letters). This Haggadah represents the only known appearance of Ladino in Hebrew letters in a London imprint. Very rare: this edition doesn't seem to be in the British Library nor the Bodleian. Alexander Alexander (Alexander ben Judah Leib) was one of the pioneers of the Hebrew printing in London, active in the 18th-19th centuries. He had established his Hebrew press in London in 1770. This haggadah was the second book published by him, following an earlier bilingual Common Prayer-Book. The frontispiece illustration - 'Moses slaying the Egyptian' has the captions: "And they built for Pharaoh store-cities Pithom and Raameses" in Hebrew at the bottom and "Engraved for the Hebrew Hawgoda" in English at the top. In fact this engraving is a copy of Bar Jacob's illustration for the Amsterdam Haggadah, which itself is a copy of a biblical engraving by Matthaeus Merian dating back to the first half of the 17th century.         Tephilloth, Containing The Forms of Prayers Which are Publicly Read in The Synagogues, and Used in All Families.

London W. Tooke for The Translators 1770 - First edition. Octavo (17.5 x 11 cm); [1], 213, [16] pp. Text in Hebrew and English. Worm marks and small marginal tears to a few pages, contemporary brown calf, light wear, edges rubbed. A very good copy. First Hebrew-English Prayer Book Printed in England. In 1770, Alexander Alexander, pioneer of the Hebrew press in London, produced this liturgy according to the Ashkenazic rite in partnership with Benedict Meyers (Jost) of Halberstadt. The first English translation of the daily prayer-book, it was printed on a subscription basis and interestingly, the list of subscribers included many non-Jews. The translators Alexander and Meyers took note in their preface, that despite the cultural and religious significance of the Hebrew language, "being imperfectly understood by many, by some not at all, it has become necessary to translate our prayers into the language of the country wherein it has pleased Divine Providence to appoint our lot. They also belittled the earlier attempt at an English translation of a Hebrew prayer-book, which was published in London in 1738 by the apostate Abraham Mears under the pseudonym Gamaliel Ben Pedahzur, titled 'The Book of Religion, Ceremonies, and Prayers '.       â€¦By the Author of The Farmer's Letters… Ten plates (eight are engraved & two are woodcuts). 1 p.l., ii, 458 pp., one leaf of ads; 1 p.l., ii, viii, 500 pp. Two vols, cont. marbled boards with attractive antique calf spines, spines gilt, red morocco lettering pieces on spines, uncut. London: W. Strahan et al., 1770. First edition of the most comprehensive guide to farm management published in the 18th century. Young's aim in this work was to show how any given amount of capital might best be spent in agriculture. Young always considered a farm as a business venture from which profits were to be made. There is a very interesting chapter describing the farmyard and its buildings which are illustrated on the two folding engraved plates. They very probably are representations of Young's own farm. Vieillard-Baron, 'Hemsterhuis platonicien', in XVIIIe siècle, VII, 1975, p. 129-146). L’œuvre d’Hemsterhuis enthousiasma les penseurs et poètes du "Sturm und Drang" avant de captiver les premiers romantiques. C'est Herder qui traduisit en allemand cette ‘Lettre sur les désirs’. (Stoddard, 'Bibliographical list of books by F. Hemsterhuis', in 'The Book collector', vol. 50/2, n°3 p.191). Mors et coins légèrement frottés Joli exemplaire relié en maroquin rouge à l’époque, grand de marges, imprimé sur papier fort. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Catalogue raisonné des Principaux Manuscrits du Cabinet de M. Joseph-Louis-Dominique de Cambis, Marquis de Velleron, Seigneur de Cayrane & de Fargues..

3 p.l., vi, [2], [3]-766 pp., 2 leaves of errata. Two parts in one vol. Large 4to, cont. mottled calf (two corners a bit worn, outer margin of title a little stained, some spots of dampness & dormant mold towards end), arms in gilt of the Marquis de Tulle de Villefranche (the arms of this important family of the Comtat Venaissin were added in the 19th century) on both covers, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Avignon: L. Chambeau, 1770-71. The very rare privately printed catalogue - issued in a few copies only - of one of the most important collections of manuscripts formed in 18th-century provincial France. Joseph Louis Dominique Cambis-Velleron (1706-72), was one of the great provincial collectors of the period. A member of a very old and distinguished family from Avignon, Cambis-Velleron served in the army for some years. "Ami des lettres, de Cambis n'avait jamais cessé, dans ses loisirs, de rassembler tous les manuscrits intéressants et les livres rare qu'il avait pu rencontrer; aussi en composa-t-il une bibliothèque fort curieuse."-N.B.G., Vol. 7, col. 302. This is the best - and only - record of his magnificent collection of 195 early illuminated and text manuscripts which also included some 17th-century manuscripts regarding Avignon history. Several of the manuscripts are now in Madrid at the Biblioteca National, some entered the Musée Calvet in the 19th century, and others have appeared from time to time in the market. This catalogue was issued in two parts. The first part (through page 519) was issued in 1770. A second part - with continuous pagination starting with a reprinted page 519 -was printed in 1771 in order to describe Cambis's most recent acquisitions. Some copies of the first part were distributed alone (see Peignot below). Cambis's descriptions are long and amazingly exact. This copy contains a number of contemporary annotations by someone with considerable knowledge and expertise. The annotations are found on pages 33, 49, 58, 62, 63, 68, 91, 96, 140, 196, 209, 216, 243, 291, 341, 342, 453, 467, 496, 503, 555, 621, 665, 668, 673, 674, 714, and 730. Another annotation on pages 131-32 has been cut away from the blank portion of the leaf and repaired at an early date. A catalogue of part of Cambis's printed book collection appeared in 1774, issued following his death by two Avignon booksellers. The family's handsome chateau still stands in Velleron in the Vaucluse. A very good copy with the engraved armorial bookplate of the Marquis de Tulle de Villefranche. This is the first time I have handled a copy. The autograph manuscript of this catalogue is at the Bibliothèque municipale of Avignon (BM ms. 2016). ? Brunet, I, col.

In addition to being an important early workof American natural history, these volumes contain the mosttrustworthy descriptions of Swedish settlements in eighteenthcentury Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Copy of a letter to J. Ellis, Esq., of Gray's-inn, from Dr. Solander. [in] The Annual Register, or a View of the History, Politicks, and Literature for the Year 1769

Printed for J. Dodsley, London 1770 - Two volumes in one, octavo; contemporary ms. ownership and shelf marks on front pastedown; an excellent copy in contemporary calf. A little-known text relating to Cook's first voyage, in fact one of the first accounts of the voyage to be printed: a letter from Solander to John Ellis written from Rio de Janeiro, dated 1 December 1768, and here published in the 1769 volume of the Annual Register. Solander writes of his and Joseph Banks's frustration at being refused permission by the viceroy to go ashore to study the abundant plant life but how, by 'fair means and foul', they had managed to acquire some 300 specimens, and identify a number of new species. Although only a few pages long, the letter bristles with scientific comment on the flora and fauna they had managed to examine, and simultaneously shows Solander's eagerness for the voyage, commenting on how he has enlisted some of the brighter sailors to help identify and catalogue new species.Solander, who trained with Linnaeus, moved to England in 1759 for what was meant to be a brief visit, but it became his permanent home. He became firm friends with John Ellis, and made substantial contributions to many of his most important works, including the Natural History of Zoophytes. However, it is the patronage of Sir Joseph Banks which was the turning point in Solander's career, and which led to his joining Cook's first voyage. On their return, Solander became Banks' secretary and librarian, a portmanteau position that also meant that he was, in effect, the curator of the natural history collection.Like Banks, Solander was shy of taking credit for his work, and although he worked on some of the most important natural history projects of his generation, very few pieces were actually signed, and have only been attributed to him by later scholarship. Despite his many travels, Solander never returned to Sweden, and died at Soho Square in 1782.
