Le Roué Vertueux. Poëme en Prose en Quatre Chants, Propre à Faire, en Cas de Besoin, un Drame à Jouer Deux Fois par Semaine. A Lauzanne

[4], 52, 16 pp. volume of four typographically innovative songs by the comic writer, preceded by an introduction and followed by "Lettre d'un Jeune Metaphysicien, a une Jeune Dame". Illustrated with four aquatints by Jean-Baptiste Le Prince. Minor pencil notations to inside front cover and endpaper, ink notation to title page. 8vo. Full calf. Minor rubbing to extremities. N.p. (Paris) (Claude-Antoine Jombert) 1770. This work was composed in 1770 by Coqueley de Chaussepierre as a comic parody of the play "L'Honnête criminel, ou l'amour filial" by Charles-Georges Fenouillot de Falbaire. Composed exclusively of pieces of sentences, punctuation, and single words in no logical sequence, in the following years the original source play was forgotten and this satire remembered for its typographic originality and surrealist style. A pre-cursor to concrete poetry, this work is referenced in Jaroslav Andel's "Avant-Garde Design 1900-1950" as one of "the earliest and the most striking examples of poetic and typographic invention..." (pp. 30-32). Coqueley de Chuassepierre's work was also one of the first published books to contain aquatints. As of April 2017, WorldCat locates five holdings in North America.

[Letter on the fighting between the Ottomans and Mamluks in Egypt]. Bucharest, 13 December 1803. 4to (23.5 x 18.5 cm). Autograph letter in English, signed, written in brown ink on laid paper.

A signed autograph letter by William Drummond (1770-1828), Scottish classical scholar, poet and British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, written in Bucharest en route from Constantinople (Istanbul) to Berlin. The British had taken Alexandria from Napoleon's troops on 2 September 1801, but abandoned it in March 1803, disappointing the Mamluks and their leader Muhammad Bey al-Alfi, who had supported the British against the French and Ottoman forces and remained in Alexandria. The Ottomans, facing financial troubles, disbanded their non-Turkish forces without pay, and their Albanian captain Muhammad Ali (1769-1849) and his troops in Cairo mutinied and wrested control of the city from the Ottoman governor. Although this put the Albanians on the British and Mamluk side against the French and Ottomans, the Mamluks were not prepared to leave Cairo in Albanian hands. Drummond therefore notes in the present letter that the latest news when he left Constantinople was that the "Beys" (Mamluk forces under Muhammed Bey al-Alfi) had raised the siege of Alexandria and returned to Cairo due to "a mutinous spirit" among their "new allies", the Albanian troops, and he regrets that the "French interest" among the Mamluks "has taken a decided ascendancy." In the event, Muhammad Ali was to prevail in 1805 when Sultan Selim III in Istanbul recognised him as his viceroy in Egypt. In fine condition. A letter on the power struggle that was to bring Muhammad Ali to power in Egypt in the aftermath of the French Revolutionary War.

Iris augustifolia bicolor / Narrow leaved Flower-de-luce with two Coulours

[London, 1770. Hand-coloured engraving. Very good condition apart from a 2 1/4" loss in the top left-hand corner. A beautifully designed image from Edwards "British Herbal", a superb and rare work in which Edwards sought the essence of his subjects, producing graceful flower portraits.Edwards lived in London until about 1778, at which time he moved to Surrey, and exhibited at both the Society of Artists, of which he was a member, and the Royal Academy. In addition to the fine arts, he also provided designs for textiles, particularly cotton calico. Between 1769 and 1770 he published Edwards British Herbal in monthly parts, with text garnered from the works of contemporary botanists and 100 fine hand-coloured engraved plates from his own designs. The plates show that his interests lay not so much in the accurate depiction of botanical specimens as the design possibilities of beautiful flowers.Cf. Dunthorne 105; cf.         Historiae sive synopsis methodicae Conchyliorum et tabularum anatomicarum.

Editio altera. Oxonii, typogr. Clarendoniano, 1770. 4 parts & appendix (bound in 1 volume). Folio (365 x 245mm). pp. iv, (4), 12, 77, 6, 7, with 439 engraved plates (depicting 1083 figures). Contemporary red morocco, richly gilt decorated spine in 7 compartments, gilt ornamented sides, gilt edges. A superbly bound large paper copy of the scarce second edition, edited by Huddesford, of the first great English work on Conchology. "There is no actual text but the section headings and frugal descriptions are engraved on the plates with the figures. The complete first edition was published between 1685 and 1692. The engravings, some of which are very fine indeed, were mostly executed by Lister's daughter Susanna and his wife Anna who worked them up from their original water-colour drawings; many of these still exist at Oxford. The species illustrated are recognisable more often than not and none is reversed - a remarkable achievement in itself considering that gastropod shells had to be engraved in mirror image to ensure correct reproduction. The scientific value of the engravings is enhanced still further by numerous indications of locality" (Dance pp. 23-24). "Lister's shell book, 'Historiae sive synopsis methodicae conchyliorum', was even more sought after as a reference book and was quite scarce. It is unclear whose idea it was to reissue the book; the project was most likely a collaborative one, involving the natural history dealer Ingham Forster (da Costa's friend and Humprhrey's brother-in-law), Huddesford, curator of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, and the duchess of Portland. Huddesford was the editor..."(Tobin, B.F. The Duchess's shells. Natural history collecting in the age of Cook's voyages pp. 207-208). //Nissen ZBI, 2529; Keynes, Dr. Martin Lister no. 49.
