Lodge, all coloured by a contemporary hand, and woodcut diagrams and other illustrations in text. Contemporary half calf, marbled sides, re-backed in modern calf.

Second edition of a popular recreational science handbook written by William Hooper (1770-1810). The first edition appeared in 1774. It is chiefly a compilation of works from writers on recreational science. While the book is intended to be scientific and educational, it is also clearly designed as a manual for a magician or someone who wishes to put on public science demonstrations, noting what one should hide from the audience and what one should let them see. It explains and illustrates the principles of mathematics and science through a series of mathematical, mechanical, optical, electrical, magnetic, pneumatic, hydrological and pyrotechnic experiments, including some performed with cards. The information in the section devoted to pyrotechnics stems mainly from Guyot and includes a description of his method of imitating artificial fireworks. The plates in this section show artificial lightning, among other things. Other plates show a carriage that goes without any external force, an air chronometer, a portable camera obscura, a magical dial and theatre, an organ, the refraction of light, optical appearances, an air gun and a thermometer. With the sewing of volume 3 broken and one quire nearly detached; each volume with engraved bookplate of the 1790 Worcester Library (printed in red) on the paste-down and later embossed stamps of Worcester Public Library on the plates and some text pages; offsetting of colours to adjacent plates; some foxing; a few plates with tears restored (especially plate IV in volume 1, whose upper corner is also torn off, without loss to the printed image). Popular work on recreational science containing many experiments and tricks for public demonstrations or magic shows.

First edition of Thunberg's famous journey to South Africa, Indonesia, Japan and Ceylon in the years 1770 to 1779, in Swedish. "Contains material of great ethnographical interest" (DSB). In 1770 Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828), a student of Linnaeus, received a travel scholarship. On his way to Paris, he met the Burman family in Amsterdam, via whom he was offered the extraordinary opportunity to travel to Japan on a Dutch merchant vessel. There he was supposed to collect plants for the Amsterdam botanical garden. Japan was closed to all foreigners except the Dutch, and, in order to pass for a Dutchman, Thunberg stayed three years in the Cape Province to learn the language. In this period, he made three journeys to the interior of the country, collecting and describing more than three thousand species, of which about one thousand were new to science. In 1775 he travelled on to Java, where he stayed half a year, and in August 1775, he arrived in Japan. Although his movements were restricted, he nevertheless managed to collect species via his interpreters. He left Japan in 1776, and travelled home via Java, Ceylon, and South Africa. The present work contains his account of this important journey. "His narrative affords considerable information respecting the natural history of [Africa], together with notes on the Hottentots, Kaffirs, and slaves, and general remarks on the state of the Cape at this period." (Mendelssohn). The volumes were published in 1788, 1789, 1791, and 1793. Stafleu & Cowan list German, English and French editions. With bookplate. Lacking the half-title to volume 2; extensive annotations in ink and pencil on endpapers and margins; some browning and foxing. The first edition of Thunberg's famous account.

Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in perfette condizioni. "Great map of California by Isaac Tirion. Despite its title, this map does not cover New Mexico, instead, it focuses on California. Tirion denotes towns, indigenous villages, missions, fortifications, and some offshore detail, with mountain ranges rendered in profile.Cartographically this map falls between the seminal mapping of Father Kino of 1705 and the important discoveries of the Miera-Escalante Expedition. Tiron’s work is a significant advancement over Kino’s 1705 map, with significant new data derived from Jesuit missions and explorations throughout the region. Of note is the site of Casa Grande, on the River Gila: indigenous American Indian ruin of incredible size. This example in perfect condition and spectacular original color. Taken from "Nieuwe en Beknopte Hand-Atlas, bestaande in eene Verzameling van eenige der algemeenste en nodigste Landkaarten" Amsterdam, I. Tirion, ca 1770. (Koeman III, Tir 4)" Dimensioni 350 330mm

Cupid and Bacchus: or, love and the bottle. Containing near six hundred favourite new songs, sung at the theatres, Vauxhall, Ranelagh, Marybone, Sadler's-Wells, &c. &c. &c. many of which are not to be found in any other collection. To which are prefix'd, brief instructions for writing songs; rules for singing; and an alphabetical table of the songs.

London: printed and sold by E. Palmer, No.7, at the Bible, in Middle-Row, Holborn; and by most booksellers. 1770. oblong 12mo., xiii + (14) + 14 - 350pp., wanting five leaves (D3, H1, Q2, Q3, and S3), one leaf cropped at foot with loss of catchword, original very worn sheep, now preserved in a specially made book box of watered cloth over boards with morocco spine label lettered gilt. Incomplete, but of great rarity. Only two other copies seem to be traceable - and these also defective, each lacking a leaf of text - viz.. the Stainer copy at the Bodleian and a copy recently offered for sale by Ximenes Rare Books. No further copies recorded by COPAC, ESTC or OCLC, and it is not mentioned by Lowe, Arnott & Robinson (English theatrical literature.> Cupid and Bacchus> is a gathering together of some 566 'new songs' supposedly sung at the London theatres. All seem to have themes that refer to love, sexual attraction, flirtation, and marriage: many are sad and refer to lost loves and unattainable romance: others refer to consolation in wine: many others are care-free descriptions of romantic pleasures. The Preface may have been an effective sales-pitch for a book priced at 2s 6d at the time ('bound in red'). 'Musick, like beauty,' claims the compiler, 'has a kind of irresistable power over the human mind. It softens the rigour of fatigue and labour, and sooths the cares and anxieties of life. It pleases in retirement, inspires chearfulness in company, and gives a relish to conversation and the bottle. It is therefore presum'd the purchaser will find this collection of New Favourite Songs, an agreeable companion for leisure hours ...... Not only most of the favourite songs sung at the theatres, Vauxhall, Ranelagh, Marybone, Sadler's Wells, &c. &c. &c. for some time past, will be found in this collection, but those also which are now in vogue .....'. There follow, by way of introduction, 'brief instructions for writing songs', and 'rules for singing', which includes a nice section on 'the choice of songs'. 'In regard to the company', the author suggests, 'If there are ladies present, prudence will dictate to you to sing none that have the least tincture of immodesty. If you visit a friend, and are entreated to sing, and there are any young ladies in the family lately married, or upon the point of it, chuse such songs as describe the happiness of the married state. If the company are dispos'd to be merry, those songs that join love and the bottle will not be unacceptable. If you pass an evening at a tavern, in the company of gentlemen only, those songs which are in praise of the bottle, 'tis likely, may please best: but, if your friends are country gentlemen, you will find a good hunting song will greatly contribute to their entertainment ......'.

No date. No publisher. Over 100 brass catalogues from this era have been preserved in libraries and museums, and almost all lack a printed name identifying the source of the objects they picture.         Persicaria Nientales Nicotianae Folio [Eastern Arsesmart with a Tobacco Leaf]

[London, 1770. Hand-coloured engraving. Very good condition. A beautifully designed image from Edwards "British Herbal", a superb and rare work in which Edwards sought the essence of his subjects, producing graceful flower portraits. Edwards lived in London until about 1778, at which time he moved to Surrey, and exhibited at both the Society of Artists, of which he was a member, and the Royal Academy. In addition to the fine arts, he also provided designs for textiles, particularly cotton calico. Between 1769 and 1770 he published Edwards British Herbal in monthly parts, with text garnered from the works of contemporary botanists and 100 fine hand-coloured engraved plates from his own designs. The plates show that his interests lay not so much in the accurate depiction of botanical specimens as the design possibilities of beautiful flowers. Cf. Dunthorne 105; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p 93; cf. Henrey III 673; cf. Nissen BBI 579; cf. Oak Spring Flora p 64.

Le Roué Vertueux. Poëme en Prose en Quatre Chants, Propre à Faire, en Cas de Besoin, un Drame à Jouer Deux Fois par Semaine. A Lauzanne

[4], 52, 16 pp. volume of four typographically innovative songs by the comic writer, preceded by an introduction and followed by "Lettre d'un Jeune Metaphysicien, a une Jeune Dame". Illustrated with four aquatints by Jean-Baptiste Le Prince. Minor pencil notations to inside front cover and endpaper, ink notation to title page. 8vo. Full calf. Minor rubbing to extremities. N.p. (Paris) (Claude-Antoine Jombert) 1770. This work was composed in 1770 by Coqueley de Chaussepierre as a comic parody of the play "L'Honnête criminel, ou l'amour filial" by Charles-Georges Fenouillot de Falbaire. Composed exclusively of pieces of sentences, punctuation, and single words in no logical sequence, in the following years the original source play was forgotten and this satire remembered for its typographic originality and surrealist style. A pre-cursor to concrete poetry, this work is referenced in Jaroslav Andel's "Avant-Garde Design 1900-1950" as one of "the earliest and the most striking examples of poetic and typographic invention..." (pp. 30-32). Coqueley de Chuassepierre's work was also one of the first published books to contain aquatints. As of April 2017, WorldCat locates five holdings in North America.

Nova mappa geographica Sueciae ac Gothiae regna ut et Finlandiae Ducatum ac Lapponiam

Augsburg 1770 - Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19.5 x 22.5" This finely rendered map of Scandinavia includes Sweden, Finland, and Lapland. The vivid hand-coloring highlights, in reverse, the bodies of water that give the region its distinctive shape. The numerous coastal islands within these bodies of water are meticulously labeled, as are provinces, cities, and rivers on the mainland. The around around Stockholm, "the Venice of the North," is particularly detailed with all of its constituent islands. Two compass roses, one at the top and one at the bottom of the map, point in slightly different directions as to indicate the curvature of the Earth at this high latitude. The map is in good condition with slight chips to the upper and lower margins, not affecting the image. Otherwise a vibrant copy. Tobias Conrad Lotter was a German mapmaker based in Augsburg. His work dates to the revival of mapmaking in 18th century Germany that was spurred in large part by the work of Matthäus Seutter. Lotter, who married Seutter's daughter, worked on behalf of the Seutter firm as a master engraver and took over half of the printing house upon Seutter's death. His individual work, combined with his republication of Seutter's maps under his own imprint, allowed Lotter to match, if not surpass, his predecessor's reputation as one of the most prominent German cartographers of the period.
