        A draught of Falklands Islands

The Falklands, the first English map focused on the region, first edition. 1770. London. Folded as issued, attractive original colour, minor toning and offsetting, creasing close to folds. 695 mm x 452 mm.First edition. This is the first English map of the Falklands and the earliest to show the French and English settlements. The chart depicts the routes of the British ships HMS Carcass and HMS Jason during their survey of the Falkland Islands in 1766 ?shortly after Byron?s settling of Port Edgmond. English and French settlements are shown, and depth soundings, anchorages, rocks, surround the islands. Above and at bottom right are coastal profiles of the Jason Islands, formerly called the Sebaldine Islands by the Spanish, in honour of the first confirmed sighting of the islands by Sebald de Weer in 1600. The cartography is based on Captain Macbride, who published an account of the survey in 1767. Carrington Bowles (1724 ? 1793) was a member of the Bowles map-making family, who were in business for over a century and contributed to a considerable portion of the British printing industry of the 18th century.Rare, we can only trace one copy sold at Sotheby´s in 1990, for 209 GBP. Fordham (MCC-11), 7.

Catalogue raisonné des Principaux Manuscrits du Cabinet de M. Joseph-Louis-Dominique de Cambis, Marquis de Velleron, Seigneur de Cayrane & de Fargues

3 p.l., vi, [2], [3]-766 pp., 2 leaves of errata. Two parts in one vol. Large 4to, cont. mottled calf (two corners a bit worn, outer margin of title a little stained, some spots of dampness & dormant mold towards end), arms in gilt of the Marquis de Tulle de Villefranche (the arms of this important family of the Comtat Venaissin were added in the 19th century) on both covers, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Avignon: L. Chambeau, 1770-71. The very rare privately printed catalogue -- issued in a few copies only -- of one of the most important collections of manuscripts formed in 18th-century provincial France. Joseph Louis Dominique Cambis-Velleron (1706-72), was one of the great provincial collectors of the period. A member of a very old and distinguished family from Avignon, Cambis-Velleron served in the army for some years. "Ami des lettres, de Cambis n'avait jamais cessé, dans ses loisirs, de rassembler tous les manuscrits intéressants et les livres rare qu'il avait pu rencontrer; aussi en composa-t-il une bibliothèque fort curieuse."-N.B.G., Vol. 7, col. 302. This is the best -- and only -- record of his magnificent collection of 195 early illuminated and text manuscripts which also included some 17th-century manuscripts regarding Avignon history. Several of the manuscripts are now in Madrid at the Biblioteca National, some entered the Musée Calvet in the 19th century, and others have appeared from time to time in the market. This catalogue was issued in two parts. The first part (through page 519) was issued in 1770. A second part -- with continuous pagination starting with a reprinted page 519 --was printed in 1771 in order to describe Cambis's most recent acquisitions. Some copies of the first part were distributed alone (see Peignot below). Cambis's descriptions are long and amazingly exact. This copy contains a number of contemporary annotations by someone with considerable knowledge and expertise. The annotations are found on pages 33, 49, 58, 62, 63, 68, 91, 96, 140, 196, 209, 216, 243, 291, 341, 342, 453, 467, 496, 503, 555, 621, 665, 668, 673, 674, 714, and 730. Another annotation on pages 131-32 has been cut away from the blank portion of the leaf and repaired at an early date. A catalogue of part of Cambis's printed book collection appeared in 1774, issued following his death by two Avignon booksellers. The family's handsome chateau still stands in Velleron in the Vaucluse. A very good copy with the engraved armorial bookplate of the Marquis de Tulle de Villefranche. This is the first time I have handled a copy. The autograph manuscript of this catalogue is at the Bibliothèque municipale of Avignon (BM ms. 2016). ❧ Brunet, I, col. .

History of the Affairs of Greece

London: Benjamin White, 1770. First edition of the second English translation.. Hardcover. Good. Retaining a contemporary binding in quarter calf and marbled paper boards. Rebacked, preserving the original calf spine and red spine label. Quarto, 331 pages with two engraved folding maps, unpaginated 4-page Index, and printer's instructions and advertisement (on final index page verso). Xenophon's History of the Affairs of Ancient Greece is a continuation of Thucydides' unfinished history of the Peloponnesian War. Xenophon carries the history to the battle at Mantinea. This 1770 edition is the second English translation by William Smith (1711-1787), preceded only by the 1685 translation by John Newman. Xenophon (430-350 BCE) was an Athenian student of Socrates. Fighting for Sparta and perhaps association with Socrates earned him enmity and exile from Athens. He settled in southern Greece, becoming a prolific author of history, instructional works, essays on the military and politics, and works on Socrates and his teaching. This is a sound copy, notable for a contemporary binding and clean contents. The binding is square, tight, and sound, but worn. The contents remain notably clean, with modest spotting confined to the initial and final leaves. Both folding maps are intact and we find no previous ownership marks.

Nakaz Eia Imperatorskago Velichestva Ekateriny Vtoryia

1770. "The Best and Most Luxurious" Edition of Catherine the Great's Nakaz Catherine II, The Great [1762-1796], Empress of Russia. Nakaz Eia Imperatorskago Velichestva Ekateriny Vtoryia, Samoderzhitsy Vserossiiskiia Dannyi Kommissii o Sochinenii Proekta Novago Ulozheniia... [Instructions of Her Imperial Majesty Catherine II to the Commission on the Work of the Projected New Code of Laws]. St. Petersburg: Imperatorskaya Akademii Nauk, 1770. [viii], 403 pp. Quarto (9-1/2" x 8"). Contemporary three-quarter Russian calf over speckled paper-covered boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Some rubbing to spine and extremities, corners bumped and somewhat worn, minor tear to head of spine, front hinge cracked, minor worning to rear pastedown and free endpaper. Large copperplate vignettes at beginning and end of text. Light toning to text. Tiny early owner initials to front pastedown, interior otherwise clean. A fine copy. * Fourth edition. Described by Count M.A. Korf, then director of the Imperial Library, as "The Best and Most Luxurious Edition," it has a Russian text with parallel Latin, German and French translations. The Nakaz, or Instruction, is a statement of legal principles written by Catherine II from 1764 and 1766. It was among her most ambitious and significant undertakings. Infused with the ideas of the French Enlightenment, and copied mostly from the work of Voltaire, Montesquieu and Beccaria, it was compiled as a guide for the All-Russia Legislative Commission convened by the Empress in 1767 to create a new code to replace the 1649 Muscovite Code. Revised in consultation with Frederick the Great and Voltaire, the Instruction proclaimed the equality of all men before the law and denounced torture and the death penalty. Unfortunately, her proposed code was never completed. Catherine's manuscript was written in French, and she later produced a Russian translation. Editions in German and Russian were published in Moscow in 1767. The book was initially banned in France because it was too liberal, which is why the first French-language edition was produced in Switzerland (with a false imprint). French and Latin editions were eventually published in 1770. Camus, Bibliotheque Choisie des Livres de Droit 3301. Sopikov, Opyt Rossiiskoi Bibliografii 6456 (

THE WORKS OF ALEXANDER POPE ESQ. . . . WITH HIS LAST CORRECTIONS, ADDITIONS, AND IMPROVEMENTS: TOGETHER WITH THE COMMENTARY AND NOTES OF HIS EDITOR

London: printed for C. Bathurst et al., 1770. Hardcover. In Elaborately Gilt Contemporary Bindings. 229 x 146 mm (9 x 5 3/4"). Nine volumes. Edited by William Warburton. VERY DECORATIVE CONTEMPORARY SPECKLED CALF, covers with delicate gilt leaf border, flat spines lavishly gilt in compartments separated by metope and pentaglyph roll and filled with repeating rows of hatched ovals and floral tools, each spine with one green and one red label, marbled endpapers. With 24 engraved plates (including the frontispiece). Armorial bookplate of the library of the Duc de Luynes at Chateau Dampierre on front pastedown. Alston & Jannetta t005450; ESTC T-5450. Mild offsetting from plates, consistent (though not offensive) faint yellowing, occasional minor foxing, but very clean and fresh internally. Two joints with three-inch cracks at top (a half dozen other joints with very short, thin cracks), corners a little worn, other minor external imperfections, but the very pretty bindings quite lustrous and generally showing little use. This is a handsomely bound set with noble provenance of an early reprint during the editor's lifetime of Warburton's collected edition of the works. Although an early detractor of Pope, Warburton (1698-1779) became an intimate friend of the poet in 1739 after he defended in a series of letters Pope's "Essay on Man," the orthodoxy of which had been attacked. When Pope died in 1744, he bequeathed to Warburton half his library and the copyrights of all his works, material valued by Johnson at the whopping sum of £4,000. Having been given Pope's final corrections and additions to his works shortly before the poet died, Warburton published the first collected edition, in nine volumes, in 1751. At the same time, Warburton added a considerable amount of his own philosophical and theological commentary to the voluminous notes, and it is generally thought that these additions effectively Christianized works that otherwise would have reflected the Deism embraced by Bolingbroke, the close friend of Pope whom Warburton supplanted. Given its excellent state of preservation, it is no surprise that this appealing set once graced the stately library of the Ducs de Luynes at the Chateau Dampierre.

A very large image the so very little margin (outside plate mark) top and bottom; ample margins left and right. Cornelius Nozeman, (1712- 1786) was a Dutch clergyman and ornithologist, proposed to publish the first complete illustrated work of the birds of Holland "Nederlandsce Vogelin" in 5 volumes. In partnership with the Sepps. father Christien (1700-1775) & Jan Christien (1739-1811) with their expertise in natural history, illustration and printing were to be responsible for the plates, ; also to publish and sell the work; Nozeman wrote the text for Volune1 and most of Volume 2 before his death in 1786. They proposed that each volume should cover one species and contain fifty copper engraved, hand coloured plates, lifesize if possible, with accompanying descriptive text The ambitious project took 60 years to complete and was still in production when Nozeman died in 1786. Christien Sepp had died earlier in 1775. The Sepp family under Jan Christien engaged physician Martinus Houttuyn (1720-1798) to continue the work and then later CJ Temminck. It was left to Jan Sepp. the third generation to finally finish the work in 1829 following his father's death in 1811. John Landwehr in" Dutch books with Coloured Plates" mentions that the complete 5 volume work was sold for 525 Florins which made it the most expensive Dutch book for sale at the time.         A View of the Plaister Cliffs, on the West Shore of Georges Bay

London: Published by J.F.W Des Barres in 'The Atlantic Neptune', circa 1770-1781. Etching with aquatint, printed in sepia. Printed on laid paper with watermark `J Bates' and countermark `JB'. 23 3/4 x 32 1/2 inches. A large-scale view of the scenery near Lakevale and Antigonish on the North West coast of Nova Scotia, from 'The Atlantic Neptune', the first British sea atlas of her North American colonies This is a very fine scene depicting a dramatic point where the highlands of Nova Scotia cascade into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This is the second state of this view, and is identical to the Henry Stevens Collection, variant 70.2C, in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Des Barres studied under the great mathematician Daniel Bernoulli at the University of Basel, before continuing on to the Royal Military College at Woolwich. On the outbreak of the Seven Years war in 1756, he joined the British Royal American Regiment as a military engineer. He came the attention of General James Wolfe, who appointed him to be his aide-de-camp. From 1762, Des Barres was enlisted to survey the coastlines of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Gulf of St.Lawrence, while his colleague, Samuel Holland charted the New England coast. In 1774, Des Barres returned to England where he began work on the Neptune. His dedication to the project was so strong, that often at his own expense, he continually updated and added new charts and views up until 1784. That year he returned to Canada, where he remained for a further forty years, becoming a senior political figure and a wealthy land owner, and living to the advanced age of 103. The Atlantic Neptune was the first British sea atlas of her North American colonies, and one of the most important achievements of eighteenth century cartography. With an official commission from the Royal Navy, Des Barres published the first volume in London in 1775, which was soon followed by further volumes. Des Barres' monumental endeavor eventually featured over two-hundred charts and aquatint views, many being found in several states. All of the charts were immensely detailed, featuring both hydrographical and topographical information. Des Barres' plates were used to print further editions up into the first decade of the nineteenth-century. The Neptune met with the highest acclaim from the beginning, and is today widely regarded as superior to all other atlases produced during its time. Des Barres and The Atlantic Neptune"; pp. 18-22; Debard, "The Family Origins of Joseph Fredericks Wallet DesBarres: A Riddle Finally Solved", Nova Scotia Historical Review, Vol 14, No. 2 (1994), p.15; National Maritime Museum: Henry Stevens Collection: K0231 HNS 702C

DIRECTIONS FOR BRINGING OVER SEEDS AND PLANTS, FROM THE EAST-INDIES AND OTHER DISTANT COUNTRIES, IN A STATE OF VEGETATION: TOGETHER WITH A CATALOGUE OF SUCH FOREIGN PLANTS AS ARE WORTHY OF BEING ENCOURAGED IN OUR AMERICAN COLONIES, FOR THE PURPOSES OF MEDICINE, AGRICULTURE, AND COMMERCE. TO WHICH IS ADDED, THE FIGURE AND BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF A NEW SENSITIVE PLANT, CALLED DIONAEA MUSCIPULA: OR, VENUS'S FLY-TRAP

London. 1770.. [2],41pp. plus engraved frontispiece. Plate of the Venus fly-trap supplied in expert facsimile. Quarto. Antique half calf and marbled boards, occasional scattered foxing, else very good. An important early natural history work giving detailed instructions on how to transport seeds and plants from the East Indies and to America. It illustrates strikingly the methods of the early botanists who, linked with the opening of the Second Great Age of Exploration, were beginning to transform the plant distribution of the world. The frontispiece illustrates a few of the cleverly designed casks and boxes used in transporting seeds and plants. This is truly a fascinating book, forming a chapter unto itself in the history of the transformation of the American natural environment. Ellis includes tables listing the scientific and common English names of plants which he suggests would thrive in the American colonies. The tables also contain marginal comments on the particular region where the plant should be sown. John Ellis (1710-76) was an agent for West Florida and Dominica, and is remembered today for his remarkable historical work on coffee. He was responsible for naming DIONAEA MUSCIPULA, or the Venus fly-trap, and Linnaeus proclaimed him "the main support of natural history in England." HUNT CATALOGUE 606. SABIN 22319. PRITZEL 2665.       Augsburg: HABERMANN, F.X., [1770]. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good. UNCOMMON VERY ATTRACTIVE OPTICAL VUE PRINT OF QUEBEC c. 31 x 40 cm (n.d., after 1770). Cont. handcold. engr. optical print by F.X. Vuë de la haute Ville de Quebec avec la Place pour aller a Cavalier du Moulin. Augsburg, 'Akademische Kunsthandlung', & With captions in French and German below the image., The "optical prints" (vue d'optique) " perspective views" were a form of entertainment meant to be seen through devices were made to be viewed in a special apparatus called a Zograscope (not included) Drawn with an exaggerated one-point perspective, each print took on a nearly three-dimensional appearance when viewed in the mirror through the optique lens. The name of the print at the top was reversed in the mirror and thus right-reading when viewed by this device. Strong hand color distinguishes perspective views. These were often drawn in course crude colours inside the images, which worked better when viewed in the zograscope under low light., Stunning vue d'optique prints "Collection des Prospects," in this case, was of 5 various fictitious views of Quebec that Habermann published in collaboration with his partner Balthazar Frederic Leizelt.& These prints offered middle- and upper-class viewers in Europe a glimpse of far-off places as North America (Quebec, New York and Boston). As well, traveling vendors, went to fairs offering views of the images through the Optical Machine for a few pennies to the very curious general public.& "In considering the fictitous views of Canada, made up wholly from the imagination of engravers assisted by what they had heard from travellers, the names of François Xavier Habermann and Balthazar Freric Leeizelt... easily come first. Their Collection of Prospects was completely the product of a fertile imagination... quite unassisted by fact. The astonished collector comes across these well-drawn.... coloured etchings, having the strange peculiarity of the title et the top of the print reading backwards [as with the present image]... These prints were probably published about 1775. Habermann's views of New York, done about the same time are equally fictitious'." (Spendlove The Face of Early Canada p.83)
