- Cordier, Bibliotheca Sinica 1376. Amsterdam, Jan Christian Sepp 1770 - Cornelius Nozeman (1712-86) From Nederlandsche Vogelen Amsterdam: Jan Christian Sepp, 1770-1827 Hand-colored copperplate engraving 26 1/2” x 21” framed Nederlandsche Vogelen was the first comprehensive account of the avifauna of Holland. The plates depict all species known in the Netherlands at the time of publication. The plates frequently feature eggs and nests; a few are dedicated entirely to these subjects. The text was written by Cornelius Nozeman, a pastor who owned a cabinet of natural history specimens, and on his death, the work was taken over by Dr. Martinus Houttuyn (1720-1798). When he too died, the enterprise was continued probably by the publishers with the assistance of C.J. Temminck, to whom many of the specimens featured in the last two parts of the work belonged. Anker’s definitive catalog of bird books praises the Nozeman publication for depicting the birds “in their natural surroundings and as far as possible in their natural attitudes.” Another major critic, Sacheverell Sitwell, calls these “an ornament to the ago of Rococo.”

Historiae sive synopsis methodicae Conchyliorum et tabularum anatomicarum.

      - Editio altera. Oxonii, typogr. Clarendoniano, 1770. Folio (378 x 240mm). pp. iv, 6, 7, (4), 12, 77, with 439 engraved plates (depicting 1083 figures). Early 19th century half calf, gilt ornamented spine with red gilt lettered label A fine large paper copy of the scarce second edition, edited by Huddesford, of the first great English work on Conchology. "There is no actual text but the section headings and frugal descriptions are engraved on the plates with the figures. The complete first edition was published between 1585 and 1692. The engravings, some of which are very fine indeed, were mostly executed by Lister's daughter Susanna and his wife Anna who worked them up from their original water-colour drawings; many of these still exist at Oxford. The species illustrated are recognisable more often than not and none is reversed - a remarkable achievement in itself considering that gastropod shells had to be engraved in mirror image to ensure correct reproduction. The scientific value of the engravings is enhanced still further by numerous indications of locality" (Dance pp.23-24). "In the text the editor has printed notes written by Lister in a set of proofs; also two indexes, one according to Lister, the other to Linnaeus" (Keynes no. 49). Our copy agrees with Keynes quoting 439 engraved plates.Nissen ZBI, 2529; Keynes, Dr. Martin Lister no. 49. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Veduta del Castello dell\' Acqua Paola sul Monte Aureo

late 1770s to the mid 1780s, Rome - Hind 21 (2nd state). John Wilton-Ely 174.The watermark that is present is number 61 on page 1169 of John Wilton-Ely. The watermark is dated from the late 1770s to the mid 1780s. From the series \"Veduta di Roma\".Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and \"like Callot makes great use of the swelling line\" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi\'s own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: Ficacci plate 838, Image Size : 394x

Ancient Scottish Poems. Published from the Ms. of George Bannatyne. MDLXVIII

Longman Hurst Rees Orme and Brown; Leeds. Second edition, one of 31 copies printed on colored paper.. Edges a little rubbed; front hinge starting, but sound; very nice copy.. Lowndes, page 109; ESTC records one copy (Sorbonne), with the query that the imprint might be incorrect; OCLC records two copies (Columbia & Minn). Royal 8vo, later 19th century brown half calf, marbled paper sides, gilt lettering, untrimmed. Half-title present. Sir David Dalrymple's collection of early Scottish poetry, gathered and edited from the 16th century manuscript of Scotsman George Bannatyne, here in its second edition. The first was published in 1770, and the title-page of this edition reprints the information from the title-page that edition word-for-word, causing understandable confusion among some cataloguers, but Lowndes correctly notes the imprint on page [382] that states it was reprinted in London and Leeds by B. Dewhirst for Longman, et al. Also according to Lowndes there were 200 copies of this edition on regular paper and 31 on colored paper. Dalrymple (1726-1792) was well known among the literati of Scotland, including Hume, Boswell, and Maclaurin, and his Annals of Scotland (1776 and 1779) was highly regarded.

Handbound Anthology of Poetry from the 1700s

FONT>Existence of God 1770 - A Collection of Poetry from 1770 and 1771, bound together as one volume. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering and spine decoration. Ekins's Loves of Medea and Jason is a first edition. W. H. Roberts's are two first editions and a second edition. Armine and Elviraand The Hermit of Warkworth aresecond editions. Fables of Flora is a third edition. William Hayward Roberts, d. 1791, was a poet and Church of England clergyman. He was educated at Eton, and King's College, Cambridge. He returned to Eton as an assistant, then fellow. He became provost in 1781. Roberts combined his work at Eton with the position of rector. From 1772 until his death, Roberts was one of the king's chaplains. Amongst Roberts's works, A Poetical Essay, on the Existence of God rehearses arguments from order and design to refute the teachings of Aristotle and Epicurus. It rewrites Lucretius's apostrophe to Venus as an address to conscience, and ends by illustrating the providence of God through a brief, polemical, and strongly anti-Catholic history of the English church in the sixteenth century. (DNB)Oliver Goldsmith, 1728 1774, was an Anglo-Irish writer, poet, and physician known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield, his pastoral poem The Deserted Village, written in memory of his brother, and his plays. Edmund Cartwright, 1743 1823, was an English clergyman, poet, and inventor of the power loom. In 1770 he published Armine and Elviraa Legendary Poem, which rapidly went through a series of editions, and was later thought highly of by Sir Walter Scott. (DNB)John Langhorne, 1735 - 1779, was an English poet and clergyman. He was first a tutor, and later an Usher at Wakefield free school. In Wakefield, he took orders, being ordained deacon. He is chiefly remembered as being the translator, jointly with his brother, Rev. William Langhorne, of Plutarch's Lives, but in his day he had some reputation as a poet, his chief works in poetry being Studley Park and Fables of Flora. Thomas Percy, 1729 1811, was Bishop of Dromore. Before being made bishop, he was chaplain to George III. Percy's work continues to attract the attention of scholars around the world. Percy not only travelled from grocer's warehouse to bishop's palace but in a parallel literary career produced at least one book, the Reliques, long recognized as a seminal work of English Romanticism (Groom, 1. 1) and considered a landmark in European literature. (DNB)Jeffrey Ekins, 1731 - 1791, was the dean of Carlisle. Educated atEton and King's College, Cambridge, Ekinslater taught atEton, before accepting therectory of Quainton.

Twelve Months of Flowers (set of 12 engravings)

Robert Sayer and John King 1770 - Robert Furber (c. 1674-1756, publisher) Twelve Months of Flowers (set of 12 engravings) Set of 12 Hand-colored copperplate engravings by R. Sheppard London, Robert Sayer and John King, c. 1770 15 ½” x 20” framed, each Originally published as a catalog of plants and flowers for sale out of his Kensington nursery, Robert Furber envisioned this project as a complete departure from the modest pamphlets usually produced by floriculturists of the day. The twelve lavishly illustrated plates represent nearly 400 different species of flowers grouped according to the month in which they bloom. The compositions reflect the grand style of the Baroque period, with the flowers arranged in perfected bouquets, set in decorative and stylized urns resting on a plinth. Each flower is numbered to correspond with the legend printed at the bottom of the plate flanking either side of the cartouche identifying the month of the year. Visualized as a flower catalogue, the scale of the endeavor quickly grew as Furber collaborated with renowned Dutch artist Pieter Casteels (1684-1749) to do the illustrations. Casteels had emigrated from Antwerp to England, where he gained great acclaim as a painter of birds and flowers. It is uncertain whether the Twelve Months of Flowers actually bolstered the sales of seeds and flowers at Furber's nursery, but the popularity of these gorgeous prints was so great that the catalogue was reprinted numerous times and in various sizes throughout the Eighteenth century. As a result, the original intention for these plates was eclipsed as they are primarily admired for their beautiful, decorative quality. Published by Sayer, this is a very rare later version of the set of twelve months, re-engraved yet again, but to a size that is mid-way between the folio and the quarto issue.

Venice: Apud Nicolaum Pezzana, 1770 - A truly magnificent and well-preserved example of this genre of liturgical printing, which, in design and format, carried on with the manuscript tradition, but which, by the late 18th century, had already become impractical. Printed in red and black throughout; title- page with engraved printer's device. 476; 98 [of 100] pp. [Lacking final leaf Nn8]. Manuscript overlay on p. 70, correcting two staves of printed text. An Inquiry into the Principles of Political Oeconomy

Dublin: James Williams and Richard Moncrieffe, 1770 Three volumes, octavo, contemporary pale Irish calf, contemporary dark red labels lettered and numbered gilt, slight wear to head and tails of volume II, pp. (4) + (8) + iii-xii + (6) + 426 + (2)adverts; (32) + 424; (8) + 431 + folding table of coins + (20), a fine and attractive copy.Kress 6760. Goldsmith 10611. Higgs 4854. Blaug, Great Economists before Keynes, pp.241-242. Schumpeter, History of Economic Analysis, p.176.First Dublin edition. The first important English work on political economy. James Steuart (1712-1780) is represented as someone who produced a systematic treatment of economics, but in pre-Physiocratic form. Although his book was first published in 1767, the main elements of the argument were established in isolation in Germany in the late 1750?s. The Principles is dominated by a concern with a socio-economic system in a situation where different national economies have different growth rates. Both perspectives ensured that the book was largely concerned with matters of economic policy, and have given the misleading claim that Steuart was a mercantilist. Steuart was particularly worried about population growth and his views bear an uncanny resemblance to the later views of Malthus.David Hume is reported as being critical of the ?form and style? of the work but ?exceedingly pleased? with it as an ?ingenious performance? when he looked it over in manuscript in 1766. Whilst Steuart?s interventionist economic principles provoked Adam Smith to refute them in The Wealth of Nations, recent commentary has emphasized the continuity in Scottish economic thought from David Hume to James Steuart to Adam Smith.Marx noticed him and he gradually enjoyed some attention from the members of the German Historical School in the 19th Century who appreciated his historical bent and his belief that economic development must be consciously managed by the state. More recently he has been hailed as a forerunner of the ?economics of control? and the concept of development planning. This three volume Irish printing is rarely seen for sale.
