Nieuwe oostersche fabelen. Amsterdam, heirs of the widow of Jacobus van Egmont, [1770]. 8vo. Contemporary red half sheepskin, gold-tooled spine.

Dohmen, In de schaduw van de Scherazade (no copy located); Oprechte Haerlemsche courant (27 February 1770); Opregte Groninger courant (3 March 1770); Vaderlandsche letter-oefeningen, 4, part 1 (1770), p. 236. Only copy located of the first and only edition of an anonymous Dutch translation of 42 stories from Sa'di's Gulistan, also known as The rose garden, "probably the single most influential work of prose in the Persian tradition" (Encyclopædia Iranica). Completed in 1258, Sa'di's Gulistan is a collection of stories and poems dealing with the major issues in human existence, and includes personal anecdotes such as the story of a trip to Mecca included in the present edition. The existence of the present Dutch translation has been recorded in the literature based on contemporary notices of its publication, but no copy had been located. Dohmen's recent study of eastern stories in the 18th-century Netherlands, for example, could only refer to the announcement in the 1770 Vaderlandsche letter-oefeningen. Notices of its publication also appeared in Dutch newspapers in Haarlem (27 February 1770) and Groningen (3 March 1770).With mostly marginal water stains throughout and occasional minor foxing, but still in good condition. The binding slightly soiled and rubbed, but also good.

One spine label is absent and one volume has a chip at the spine head, one volume has some splitting at the top rear joint but all joints are sound, covers well attached. There are other small spine chips, etc. The text blocks are sound with no loosened pages, pages clean and free from any noted chips or tears, effectively no foxing, no names or other markings. Illustrations of natural history. Wherein are exhibited upwards of two hundred and forty figures of exotic insects, according to their different genera; very few of which have hitherto been figured by any author, being engraved and coloured from nature, with the greatest accuracy, and under the author's own inspection ... With a particular description of each insect: interspersed with remarks and reflections on the nature and properties of many of them. To which is added, a translation into French.

London, printed for the author, 1770-1782. 3 volumes. Large-4to (285 x 220mm). With 1 plain engraved key-plate and 150 handcoloured engraved plates. Later red half morocco, spines in 6 compartments with gilt lines and lettering, gilt edges. The very rare first edition of one of the most attractive English entomological works on exotic insects. Dru Drury (1725-1803) was the son of a silversmith. "By virtue of his marriage and inheritance of the family business he was a reasonably wealthy man who could afford to support his most serious hobby entomology. Drury's collection had great fame during his life time. He spent much time and money persuading others to collect specimens for him from foreign countries. He had a wide correspondence with entomologists around the world. Linnaeus (1707-1778) and Willliam Kirby (1759-1850) both named species after him" (Harvey, Gilbert & Martin, A catalogue of manuscripts in the Entomological library... 119). The majority of the fine plates were drawn and engraved by Moses Harris./"Although originally conceived as a publication to illustrate all the specimens that came in, Drury soon changed his mind and eventually decided to illustrate only those specimens which had not previously been drawn. Years later, the eminent British entomologist W.F. Kirby described the work as an 'Opus entomologicus splendissimus'!" (Gilbert, Butterfly Collectors and Painters, p.140). After his death his enormous collection of about 11.000 species was sold at a London auction for 614 Pound; it was Donovan who saw his unique chance and bought most of the British specimens. The text is in English and French. A fine copy, a few plates in the first volume with some occasional foxing.//Provenance: Bookplate of Ludwig Freude.//Nissen ZBI, 1160; Horn & Schenkling 5267 'Selten'.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Large-4to (255 x 200 mm). With 190 handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary calf, identical covers tooled in gilt with double fillet border enclosing 2 panels, richly gilt decorated spines with green and red gilt lettered labels, inside dentelles, gilt edges. A superbly bound and unusually clean copy in a contemporary Dutch binding of one of the most decorative works on shells. The beautifully handcoloured engraved plates depict nearly a thousand shells. The last ten plates, which were published after Knorr's death, have a dark brown background in contrast to the illustrated white shells. The extraordinary quality of the plates represent the eighteenth century continuation of the tradition of Dürer, and it is scarcely an exaggeration to say that the beauty of some of Knorr's illustrations exceeds that of their models. Most of them are after drawings by the author, C. Dietsch and J.C. Kleemann. The portrayed shells come from famous Dutch cabinets such as the one of Martin Houttuyn, physician of Amsterdam, who had a very large collection of shells, containing many rare species; the cabinet of W. van der Meulen, a wealthy merchant of Amsterdam; the cabinet of J. Brandt, druggist of Amsterdam. Also from the cabinet of J.P. Breyn, physician of Dresden, as well as the cabinets of Schadeloock, Muller and others.//Provenance: Bookplate of Anne Geraldine Tennant.//Nissen ZBI, 2236; Landwehr 96.

1770 - Etching and engraving. Unfinished working proof. In fair condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark. Laid onto contemporary backing card. Tear along middle of image which has been expertly repaired. Some creases in image. A rare working proof by John Browne, the celebrated English landscape engraver. One of the most esteemed English landscape engravers, John Browne was born in Finchfield Essex, in 1741. In 1756 he was apprenticed to the engraver John Tinney, but then went to work for the influential landscape engraver William Woollett. It is believed that many of Woollett's most admired plates were in fact engraved by Browne. He devoted himself entirely to engraving landscape and genre scenes in particular after works by the French and Dutch masters. In 1770 he was elected an associate engraver of the Royal Academy, exhibiting thirteen plates between 1767 and 1801. This stunning genre scene is a wonderful example of his skilled hand and a rare working proof. This intriguing print shows a unique step in the printmaking process before an image is ready for publication. Before the image is completed, the engraver has printed a trial impression to view this stage of the engraved plate. It is incredibly rare to find prints in this unfinished experimental stage; impressions which were pulled as working proofs are unique and were almost never duplicated.

3 volumes octavo (1998 × 118 mm). Contemporary lightly sprinkled sheep, double yellow morocco labels, double gilt rules top and bottom of the compartments, edges blue marbled, striking endpapers of missal leaves washed with black ink and hand-painted with a "star-map" pattern in white. Portrait frontispiece, title-page vignette to each, a portrait to volume I, trophies to the other two volumes, title pages printed in red and black, pictorial head-piece to the first page of text of each volume, and wood-engraved cul-de-lampe at the conclusion of the text, 41 folding plates. Half-titles bound in to volumes II and III. A little rubbed, and with a few old patched repairs to the spines, light browning, but otherwise a very appealing set in excellent condition. Second octavo edition of Turpin de Crissé's commentaries, the third overall, the first being the quarto edition of the previous year. Montecuccoli's memoirs were first published in Venice in 1703. "Unequalled as a master of seventeenth-century warfare, Montecuccoli excelled in the art of fortification and siege, march and counter-march, and cutting his enemy's lines of communications. In advocating standing armies, he clearly foresaw future trends in the military field" (Britannica). Montecuccoli's writings "probably regarded as a state secret and only circulated internally, were never published during his lifetime" (Gat, The Origins of Military Thought, p.23) and Turpin's commentaries were important in the transmission of Montecuccoli's "theoretical and conceptual framework" (p.24) to the military thinkers of the Enlightenment.

EXPOSICIÓN SOBRE ALGUNOS PUNTOS PARA CONTRIBUIR A UN FELIZ REINADO PRESENTADA POR LOS DIPUTADOS DE ZARAGOZA, VALENCIA, BARCELONA Y PALMA AL REY.]

S.l.n.a. (c. 1770 - ). 30,5 cm. Aprox.

Trinity Harbour / Carboniere and Harbour Grace / St. John's Harbour / Cape Broyle Harbour ...[published in: The North-American Pilot for Newfoundland, Labradore, the Gulf and River St.Laurence: being a collection of sixty accurate charts and plans, drawn from original surveys: taken by James Cook and Michael Lane, Surveyors, and Joseph Gilbert, and other officers in the King's service]

London: Robert Sayer & John Bennett, 1770. A spectacular chart from the survey which laid the foundation upon which Captain Cook's reputation as a surveyor and navigator rested. At the conclusion of the French and Indian War, the British needed accurate charts of the territories that had been awarded to them in the Treaty of Paris. The areas that were of particular interest to the Admiralty included Labrador and Newfoundland. "On 19 April 1763 James Cook, Master R.N.. was ordered by the Admiralty to proceed to Newfoundland 'in order to your taking a survey of the Parts of the Coasts and Harbours of that Island'" (Tooley & Skelton, in Tooley's The Mapping of America p.177). His appointment would have been based, in no small part, on the glowing endorsment of his commanding officer, who had written to the Admiralty in December 1762 "that from my experience of Mr. Cook's genius and capacity, I think him well fitted for the work he has undertaken, and for greater undertakings of the same kind". "The charting of Newfoundland and southern Labrador by Cook... and by his successor Michael Lane ... was unequalled, for thoroughness and method, by any previous hydrographic work by Englishmen [and also allowed Cook to master the art of practical surveying and navigation, in a way that brought him to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society at a crucial moment. More immediately.] it produced the first charts of this extensive and difficult coastline that could (in the words of a later hydrographer) 'with any degree of safety be trusted by the seaman'" (Tooley & Skelton op. cit.). Cook started by surveying the northwest stretch of coastline in 1763 and 1764, then in 1765 and 1766 the south coast between Cape Ray and the Burin Peninsula, and in 1767 the west coast. His work was interrupted by what was to prove to be the first of his three great voyages to the Pacific, and the work on Newfoundland and southern Labrador was finished by Michael Lane between 1768 and 1773. Thomas Jefferys used the charts by Cook and others to form the "Collection of Charts of 1769-70, a prototype ... for the celebrated North-American Pilot which was to be published in five English editions from 1775 to 1806" (Tooley & Skelton op,cit.). The present example is from Sayer and Bennett's 1775 edition (Tooley & Skelton's # 13). Skelton & Tooley, "The Marine Surveys of James Cook in North America" 13.IV in Tooley, The Mapping of America. s.n.,, Firenze, 1770 - Cm. 16,5, pp. viii, 346. Perfetta legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida con nervi passanti e titoli in oro su tassello. Esemplare genuino e ben conservato.

O. Temkin, The Falling Sickness, 2e éd., p. 229-231 :" Tissot's treatise on Epilepsy, published in 1770, is the first book on this subject to show all the characteristics of Enlightenment in medicine. Written in the French vernacular, it is at once learned, scientific, and readable." ; S. Ashwal, The Founders of child neurology, p. 8, 10 ; A. Beaumanoir & J. Roger, Une histoire de l'épileptologie francophone, pp. 3-4, 34, 52, 92. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
