Histoire Naturelle De L'Air et Des Meteores. Ten Volumes

Paris: Chez Sailland & Nyon. 1770. 16mo (16.5 cm tall). H Hard Cover. Very Good. In French. Volumes 1-6 are dated 1770; 7-10 dated 1771 (originally published as a six-volume set). A comprehensive work on atmospherics, weather, weather-related natural phenomena, and other observations on phenomena such as the aurora borealis. Folding table in volume 6, no illustrations. Full mottled French calf, dual spine labels in tan and natural calf, raised spine bands, gilt decorated compartments, edges speckled with red. Most likely the original, or at least contemporary, bindings. Expected edgewear and rubbing with additional light old insect damage to a few of the covers, mainly chipping, and some minute insect pinholes to the spines - none of the insect damage affects the interiors of the books. One spine label is absent and one volume has a chip at the spine head, one volume has some splitting at the top rear joint but all joints are sound, covers well attached. There are other small spine chips, etc. The text blocks are sound with no loosened pages, pages clean and free from any noted chips or tears, effectively no foxing, no names or other markings. Externally good, internally near fine.

The Trial of His R[oyal] H[ighness] the D[uke] of C[umberland] for

1770. Sensational 1770 Adultery Trial Involving the Brother of King George III [Trial]. [Grosvenor Cause]. [Henry Frederick, Duke of Cumberland (1745-1790), Defendant]. The Trial of His R[oyal] H[ighness] the D[uke] of C[umberland] for Criminal Conversation with Lady Harriet G[rosveno]r. Including the Letters Which Have Passed Between His R.H. and Her Ladyship, and Were Read in Court. [London]: Bailey, Printer, 1770. 48 pp. Octavo (6-3/4" x 4-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in plain wrappers bound into recent period-style quarter calf over cloth. Charming woodcut title page device, head-piece and tail-piece. Light foxing to final leaf, interior otherwise fresh. * Henry Frederick, the brother of King George III, was notorious for his--to use the language of the day--"excesses" and "irregular" life. In 1770 Richard Grosvenor, first earl Grosvenor, sued him for committing adultery (criminal conversation) with the Countess Grosvenor. Argued before the great jurist Lord Mansfield, it was one of the most colorful trials of the day. The court found in Grosvenor's favor and ordered the Duke to pay him 10,000 guineas in damages. Short of cash, his brothers had to assist him with the payment. This pamphlet offers a vivid narrative account enlivened with a few excerpts from the transcripts, along with complete texts of the letters. The cornerstone of this case, they are occasionally quite bawdy. Catalogue of the Library of the Harvard Law School (1909) II:1090.

Le Sauvage de Taïti aux Français; avec un Envoi au Philosophe ami des Sauvages

"A Londres et se trouve à Paris" [in fact Paris]: chez Le Jay, 1770. Octavo, bound with two other works (see below); in fine condition in contemporary marbled calf, lightly rubbed, flat spine ornamented in gilt with four alternating crimson and green labels. A letter from Aotourou: one of the earliest books relating to Tahiti. Rare first edition of an important and very early work relating to Tahiti in a most attractive contemporary volume. This enlightenment satire takes the form of a letter from Aotourou, the Tahitian who returned to Paris with Bougainville. There was much criticism of Bougainville on this point - Diderot particularly upbraided him for having "torn" the native from his environment - but Aotourou was a sensation, and apparently fascinated by the French capital. Bougainville himself paid to kit out a ship when Aotourou expressed a wish to return home, but the Tahitian was killed en voyage by an outbreak of small pox.La Dixmerie was personally involved with Aotourou, and helped introduce him to Parisian high society. He remained virulently opposed to the popular notion of the noble savage, just as he sided with Diderot in arguing that it was a violence to have brought Aotourou to France. In this fictional letter, Aotourou satirically compares the mores of Paris society with those of Nouvelle-Cythère.The description of Tahiti is based on the Lettre de Monsieur de Commerson, the naturalist on the voyage, which was first published in 1769. Published the next year, la Dixmerie's imaginative work is, as Du Rietz comments, "one of the earliest books relating to Tahiti". Not until the 1779 publication of Taitbout's Essai sur l'Isle d'Otahiti was there a separately-published factually-based work on Tahiti. The work has a particularly complicated collation, dealt with at length by Du Rietz in the Kroepelien catalogue. Our copy does not have the initial and final blank leaves that he describes, but is otherwise perfect, with the title-page giving the phony London imprint (another issue had a phony Tahitian imprint). Here it is bound with copies of Louis de Boissy, Les filles femmes, et les femmes filles, ou le monde changé... (Paris, 1751; first edition of a tale in which Love proves resentful of Marriage) and Charles Duclos, Acajou et Zirphile, Conte (Paris, 1761; first published 1744; with two engravings originally made for the Comte de Tessin's Faunillane ou l'Infante jaune - when that work was abandoned Duclos composed this story around the engravings).

        Caryophyllus, Phoenix Florum

Nuremberg 1770 - The “Hortus Nitidissimis Omnem Per Annum Superbiens Floribus Sive Amoenissimorum Florum Imagines” was published between 1750 and 1786 as a periodical intended, when collected, to form an unmatched collection of botanical prints. The engravings are based on the drawings collected from various artists by the famous Nuremberg physician and amateur botanist Christopher Jacob Trew. Although the plates were produced using engraving techniques common to the period, each plate was completed individually through hand coloring. The variations in plates between different known volumes indicates that more than one artist was involved in this process. These variations render every volume of the work unique. Trew’s good friend Georg Dionysius Ehret, considered the most important and influential botanical artist of the mid-18th century, was a chief artist of this endeavor. Ehret was born to farmers in Heidelberg, Germany in 1708, and showed an early propensity for drawing. As a young man he was employed primarily as a gardener and he used his time spent gardening to examine and practice drawing botanicals and the natural world around him. Eventually his art attracted the attention of Dr. Trew who gave Ehret financial patronage and with whom he worked on the Hortus Nitidissimis as well as Plantae Selectae. These botanical engravings are considered the finest records of cultivated flowers of the time and are noted as being precisely engraved and exquisitely colored. This hand colored engraving, 20” x 14”, is in good condition with some staining and foxing throughout and discoloration in the margins. Caryophyllus is a type of herbaceous perennial plant commonly referred to as a carnation. This finely hand colored engraving shows the blooming flower in vibrant shades of red and crimson with the delicate stems and leaves curling below.

        Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata)]

1770 - Watercolour and bodycolour, on laid paper, watermarked 'IV'. An accurate depiction of a Muscovy Duck with a charming naïveté. The Muscovy is a native of Brazil but has long been domesticated and is indeed the only domestic duck not derived from Mallard stock. It is found in a great many colour premutations but the one distinguishing feature that remains constant is the extraordinary area of red skin around the eyes and over the beak. The present image is on continental paper and is stylistically similar to work being produced in Germany in the 1770s.

[MANUSCRIPT LYRICS AND MUSIC TO "BETSY" OR "THE BETRAYED MAIDEN"]

[Connecticut,, ca. 1770]. Loose leaf. Fair. One manuscript leaf, approximately 11 1/2 x 8 inches, early folds. Recto inscribed with song lyrics, verso with musical notation and unrelated early inscriptions. Neatly separated along horizontal fold, some separation at other folds and minor chipping along folds and edges. Toning and early light stains and smudges. Fair to good. 18th-century manuscript rendering of a ballad believed to be one of the first songs composed in British America, known as "Betsy" and by various other titles. The manuscript leaf contains a complete set of lyrics to an eleven-verse version of the song and 26 bars of notation of a simple melody. "Betsy" does not appear among the Child ballads but has been discussed extensively by later collectors and scholars of Anglo-American folk songs, including Malcolm Laws, who refers to it as "Betsy Is a Beauty Fair," "Johnny and Betsy," and "The Lancaster Maid." Laws sums up the action succinctly: "A young man's mother hears him making love to her young servant girl. She spirits the girl away and has her transported to Virginia as a bound servant. The boy pines away and dies of his grief and the mother regrets her unkindness" (AMERICAN BALLADRY FROM BRITISH BROADSIDES, pp. 189-190). In a 1906 issue of the JOURNAL OF AMERICAN FOLKLORE, contributor Mrs. R. F. Herrick submits the song as "Betsy Was a Lady Fair," which she learned from her father, born in 1807. She relates the tradition that it "is supposed to be the first, or one of the first, songs composed in the colonies" (JAF 19:73, pp. 130-132). As Laws notes, the song is almost certainly based on a late 17th-century British broadside ballad, "Love Overthrown. The Young Man's Misery; And the MAID'S RUINE" (Magdalene College Pepys broadside collection 5.307), which follows an almost identical plot, including the banishment to Virginia. The earliest known printed version of the song as it was sung (and possibly reconfigured) in America appears as "The Betrayed Maiden" in a broadside printed by J. Pitts in London at some point between 1819 and 1844. The present manuscript evidently was composed in colonial or late 18th-century Connecticut, judging from the paper and a stray inscription on the verso, snugly contained in two panels of the folds (indicating a later date from the main contents). The inscription, written backwards, refers to "Abner Ladd of Norwich in the County of New London in America" and "John Gager" and is signed by the former. Two residents of Norwich of these names were contemporaries, Ladd living between 1740 and 1819 and Gager from 1736 to 1817. In addition to pointing to the main document's 18th-century origins, the inscription strongly suggests it preceded the Pitts London broadside (whose earliest possible printing date was 1819) by some years, making the manuscript the earliest known written recording of the song in this form.
