Matthäus Henry Practische Erklärung der Psalmen Davids

Weygand, Leipzig 1770 - Octavo. (1) 788, 703, 616pp. Original three quarter calf with gilt tooling, gilt lettering on black label of spine over speckled boards; raised bands. Frontispiece engraving. Vignette on title page. Beautifully historiated head and endpieces and initials. Translated from the author's exposition of the Old and New Testament into German with a lengthy preface by Rambach in each volume: on singing the Psalms of David in the First Temple in volume one, on the certain and reliable fulfillment of the major prophecies of the Old Testament in volume two, and a repudiation of a threefold prejudice against the Songs of David. The prejudices are described as follows: 1) according to the Bible David committed grave sins. e.g. sexual impropriety, which may disturb the heart of the believer even in the most devoted prayer, 2) the mention of the curses in the Psalms are interpreted in such a way, as if David prayed for them to God to destroy his enemies, e.g. revenge, and 3) some obscure the testimonials of Jesus in the Psalms even when they are obviously present. Each psalm is introduced with a summary and interpretations. At the time of this work Rambach was a German Protestant pastor at the Elisabeth Church in Breslau and inspector of the Lutheran Church in the principality of Breslau. He was a prolific writer and translator and is credited and recognized for introducing a number of important works of foreign literature to a German audience as well as for his own works in the area of Biblical theology. Text in German. Light rubbing and scuffing of boards with very light wear along edges of binding. Molto ben conservata. Tracce di stampa di inchiostro in controparte. Manca a Zacharakis ìA catalogue of printed maps of Greece 1477-1800. Third editionî cartografia.

DIALOGUES SUR LE COMMERCE DES BLEDS

[Merlin], Londres [but Paris] 1770 - 197 x 125 mm. (7 3/4 x 5"). 2 p.l., 314 pp., [1] leaf (errata). FIRST EDITION. EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY RED MOROCCO, GILT, WITH THE PAPAL ARMS OF PIUS VI, covers with frame of cresting floral roll and volutes accented with ciborium ornaments, raised bands, spine panels with central floral sprig, black morocco label, renewed endpapers (with the book consequently opening stiffly). Kress 6730; Goldsmiths 10640. Boards with a few spots of soiling, otherwise an extremely fine copy--the margins especially ample, the text unusually clean, fresh, and bright, and the binding lustrous and scarcely worn. In a handsome binding of papal provenance, this economic essay on the wheat trade is one of the few works in the "dismal science" to be noted for its wit and vivacious style. Voltaire likened it to a cross between Plato and Molière, and Scottish economist John Ramsay McCulloch observed that "perhaps no foreigner ever obtained so perfect a mastery over the delicacies of the French language as Galiani has displayed in" this work. Written in the form of dialogues between two French noblemen, this debate over free market versus mercantilist policies in the French wheat trade was likely of interest to a pope known for his keen financial sense. Pope Pius VI (1717-99) received a doctorate in canon and civil law as Count Giovanni Angelo Braschi before entering the priesthood. Economics was an area of specialization for him: he headed the papal treasury before becoming a cardinal, and was noted for improving Vatican finances during his papacy.         Systeme de la Nature: ou, Des Loix du Monde Physique & du Monde Moral. Par M. Mirabaud [2 Volumes]

Marc-Michel Rey 1770 - Londres [i.e. Amsterdam], 1770. First edition, first issue, with comma after Londres on title page. Half title on first volume only. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt, floral decorated spines, gilt spine labels. A beautiful complete set of Holbach's major work in an original binding. Joints dried, some very small cracks to heel of binding on tome 1, small chips to leather at corners, some light scattered foxing to contents. Remains in excellent, near fine condition overall. Holbach published the work under the name of Jean-Baptiste de Mirabaud, the secretary of the Academie Francaise who had died ten years previously. Denying the existence of a deity, and refusing to admit as evidence all a priori arguments, d'Holbach saw in the universe as nothing more than matter in motion, bound by inexorable natural laws of cause and effect. There is, he wrote "no necessity to have recourse to supernatural powers to account for the formation of things." "He was far too dogmatically atheistic for most of the "philosophes" who were 'skeptical' and vacillated between atheism and deism." - PMM 215; Kress 6737, Tchemerzine VI, page 243.

Londres [but Paris]: [Merlin], 1770. FIRST EDITION. Economics was an area of specialization for him: he headed the papal treasury before becoming a cardinal, and was noted for improving Vatican finances during his papacy.. 197 x 125 mm.
