Commentaries on the Laws of England

Oxford: Clarendon Press,, 1768-9. 4 volumes, quarto (270 x 210 mm). Early 19th-century roan, attractively rebacked to style, raised bands to spines forming compartments, twin black and grey morocco labels respectively to second and third, remaining compartments richly gilt with floral designs, marbled endpapers, twin gilt rules to covers and turn-ins. 2 engraved tables (1 folding) in volume 2. Vol. 1 and 2 joints skilfully restored, a few minor scuffs and marks to covers, craquelure to rear cover vol. 1 (now stabilised), variable pale spotting to prelims and early leaves, else internally crisp and fresh. A very good, wide-margined set. First editions of vols. III and IV, third edition of the first volume, and second edition of the second; with the ownership inscription of Cornish landowner and tory politician Henry Hawkins Tremayne (1741-1829) to the title page of the third volume. The Tremaynes were a family of wealthy landowners who were heavily involved in Cornish electoral politics in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Hawkins inherited the family seat at Heligan, near St Austell, upon the death of his elder brother. He had been ordained as a deacon but now "combined his landowning, mining, and gardening interests with a close involvement in local politics. He was a tory and his activities may have been influenced by his brother-in-law Charles Rashleigh, a solicitor, who was a fierce opponent of the political ambitions of Sir Francis Basset and of Cornwall's whig reformers. During the 1770s and 1780s Tremayne was on several occasions mayor of Penryn, where he openly opposed Basset's briefly successful attempts to control the borough's parliamentary representation. He also voted against Basset's preferred candidate in the hotly contested county election of 1790, being one of the most prominent supporters of the victorious Francis Gregor, a follower of Pitt. Tremayne's political opinions were highly respected, and were sought by his fellow tories" (ODNB). "Blackstone's great work on the laws of England is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history ? Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine ? Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation ? He takes a delight in describing and defending as the essence of the constitution the often anomalous complexities which had grown into the laws of England over the centuries. But he achieves the astonishing feat of communicating this delight, and this is due to a style which is itself always lucid and graceful" (PMM).

of Johann Christoph von Selpert. Berlin, Bremen, Dresden, Hamburg, Göttingen, Lausanne, Leipzig, Meißen, Regensburg, Zurich, 1768-1774.

1768. Oblong 8vo (200 x 118 mm). 86 ff. with 93 entries, 5 full-page illustrations (1 washed pencil drawing, 4 gouaches), and a watercolour flower in the text. Contemp. vellum with coloured lacquer decorations to covers and spine. Bronze varnish paper; edges goffered and gilt. Uncommonly beautiful friendship album belonging to the law student Johann Christoph von Selpert (d. 1817), later councillor and delegate of various cities at the Regensburg Imperial Diet. Among the various contributors are many important scholars of the late 18th century, including Moses Mendelssohn, Johann Bernhard Basedow, Salomon Gessner, A. F. Büsching, and Christian August Clodius. - The earliest contributors are mostly Regensburg relatives of Selpert's, including Johanna Elisabetha née Harrer, wiife of the local merchant and freemason Ludwig Leonhard Schkler (1738-1807), but also the 13-year-old Benedikt Friedrich Springer (1756-1803), later a preacher of note. Soon, more important personages are added whom Selpert met during his University years at Leipzig: the Rosicrucian Adam Michael Birkholz (1746-1818), who published under the pen name "AdaMah Booz", the preacher and hymn poet Johann Gottfried Schöner (1749-1818), the later law professor Christian Rau (1744-1818), as well as the historian Johann Gottlob Böhme (1717-80), the law scholar J. H. Wilmerding (1749-1828), later the mayor of Braunschweig, the educator Johann Bernhard Basedow (1724-90), the poet and philosopher Christian August Clodius (1737-84), the theologian and classical scholar Johann August Ernesti (1707-81), director of Leipzig's Thomasschule, and the city captain Johann Christian Krappe (1709-91). In Berlin, Moses Mendelssohn signs himself (in Hebrew) on 25 Iyyar 5532 (i.e., 28 May 1772), as does the geographer Anton Friedrich Büsching (1724-93); a Hamburg contribution is by the Linné student Johann Christoph von Heidenstam (1739-74); others, from Göttingen, are by Johann Heinrich Prieser (1749-1801) and Johann Jakob Besserer (1753-1834), both of whom soon would make their careers in Augsburg as concillors and even as mayor. Further journeys lead Selpert to Dresden, Meissen, and Bremen. Contributions from Lausanne (1773) include the physician and chemist Heinrich Struve (1751-1826), the naturalist Jakob Samuel Wyttenbach (1748-1839), and the jurist Samuel Porta (1716-1790); in Zurich the poet Salomon Gessner (1730-88) signs, as does the physician and writer Johann Kaspar Hirzel (1725-1803). - Selpert's coat of arms (an ink drawing on strong wove paper) is inserted loosely. A title page and some four leaves were removed from the album, apparently at a very early date. Spine somewhat sunned. A complete list of all contributors is available upon request.

A South-East View of the City of New York in North America/Vue Du Sud Est de La Ville de New York dans L’Amerique Septentrionale

London: John Bowles, 1768 - Engraved by P.C. Canot (1710 - 1777) 16 x 21 ½ inches sheet, 18 ¾ x 24 ½ inches framed. Engraving on paper (fading and toning consistent with age). Title in English and French on lower margin. Annotation identifying Howdell as artist and Canot as engraver below. Plate legend on lower margin identifying well-known sites such as the North River (Hudson River), City Hall, and Staten Island. This rare and splendid view of early New York was drawn on the spot by Captain Thomas Howdell of the British Royal Artillery shortly before the start of the American Revolution, and engraved by the masterful Pierre-Charles Canot of England. The scene is taken from near today’s corner of Varick and Beach streets in lower Manhattan. The main building shown is King’s College, now known as Columbia University. Here, the city appears as little more than a village beyond the rolling hills and fields in the foreground, and this view serves as an important historical record of New York’s early growth and appearance just prior to the American Revolution. In the very foreground we see two colonial-era figures sitting surrounded by rich and lush foliage. Church spires punctuate the skyline further back, while in the distance, the shore of Staten Island, then quite sparsely settled, is just visible on the horizon. The monuments Howdell depicted include (from east to west) St. George’s Church, the jail, the New Dutch Church, the French Church, the South Dutch Church, City Hall, the Presbyterian Church on Wall Street, King’s College (with a cupola), and Trinity Church. This fascinating glimpse of New York City, which then comprised little more than the very southernmost tip of Manhattan Island, is a very rare view dating from this crucial period. The land of New York was discovered in 1524, and colonized by the Dutch in 1624, when it was named New Amsterdam and became a trading port of the Dutch West India Company. In 1664 this Dutch colony was surrendered to British forces and was renamed New York after James Duke of York (1633-1701), who had been granted the land by his brother King Charles II. Within fifteen years of this present view, New York would become one of the most important cities in the new nation. Today it is a vibrant and diverse beacon of culture, finance, and education for the world. Catalogued by Xueli Wang, Columbia University, BA; Courtauld Institute of Art, MA. You are warmly invited to visit our gallery at 1016 Madison Avenue in New York City to view this work whenever it might be convenient.

Finely engraved allegorical title-page, four folding printed tables (one with an 8-inch tear due to a careless opening, but with no loss of text), & 8 large folding engraved maps. 1 p.l., CXLVI, [19], CXLVII-CLVI, one leaf. Folio, cont. sheep-backed marbled boards (a little worn with a small defect at head), flat spine gilt, contrasting leather lettering piece on spine. [Verona: D. Ramanzini, 1768]. First edition of this rare work memorializing and detailing the treaty between Austria and the Venetian government regarding the access to and use of the Tartaro River, which flows through the provinces of Verona and Mantua into the Adriatic Sea between the Po and Adige rivers. There are many passages concerned with hydraulic projects along the river. Due to a number of breaches over the centuries (the earliest recorded is in the 10th century), the river had been canalized; it communicates by canals with the Po and Adige. The attractive engraved title depicts the Tartaro, Mincio, and Tioni rivers (the latter are tributaries to the Tartaro) flowing under a common bridge with two putti acting as hydraulic engineers, holding measuring instruments. The Greek mythological god Tartarus is depicted as well. The fine and large maps depict the courses of the Tartaro, Mincio, and Tioni rivers, hydraulics and irrigation works, the connecting canals, elevations, etc. Nice copy printed on thick paper. .

An Essay on the First Principles of Government; And on the Nature...

1768. Priestley's First Substantial Political Work, An Influence on the Constitutional Thought of the American Founding Fathers Priestley, Joseph [1733-1804]. An Essay on the First Principles of Government; And on the Nature of Political, Civil, And Religious Liberty. Dublin: Printed for James Williams, 1768. xii, 214 pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 3-3/4"). Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Moderate rubbing to extremities, small chip to head of spine, front joint just starting at head, corners bumped, light toning to text. Faint early owner signature to title page, small mark in miniscule hand ("17.355") to front pastedown, interior otherwise clean. * First Dublin edition, and the second edition overall, a reprint of the London edition published the same year. Priestley's first substantial political work, one that influenced several American founding fathers, such as John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, An Essay on the First Principles of Government is a full expression of his deeply held humanitarian beliefs. It is based on Priestley's Essay on a Course of Liberal Education (1765), which took issue with the authoritarian educational philosophy favored by John "Estimate" Brown in his Thoughts on Civil Liberty. Priestley develops the theme of his earlier essay further, arguing for a system of education compatible with the liberal political philosophy that he advocates as a matter of morality and a prerequisite for social progress. Adams and Jefferson owned copies of this book. A note in Sowerby says Jefferson often recommended it to others and cites a letter from 1802 in which he says it expressed the principles of the U.S. Constitution and their practical development in many of its articles. Sowerby, Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson 2332 (listing the second edition, London, 1771). (listing the second edition). English Short-Title Catalogue N9377.

Tempo marocco limone pieno. Smooth indietro decorato. Parte del titolo in marocco verde. Confine filetto Triple sulle copertine. Bordi dorati. Nizza copia. Mascella superiore leggermente strofinato. Gay / Lemonnyer I, 263-264. Gay/Lemonnyer I, 263-264.

[Oxford: T. Wright and W. Gill, 1768. [34],[340],[24]pp. [bound with:] A NEW VERSION OF THE PSALMS OF DAVID FITTED TO THE TUNES USED IN CHURCHES. London: Charles Rivington, 1763. [44 (of 46)]pp. Lacks final leaf. Large folio. Modern speckled calf, gilt, with original gilt morocco label on front cover reading: "King and Queen Parish 1771." Lower half of titlepage in expert facsimile. First and last few leaves repaired in gutter margin; final leaf with some facsimile restoration. Manuscript slips neatly repaired with tissue on verso. Very good. This remarkable copy of the Book of Common Prayer from King and Queen Parish, Maryland, has been annotated with paste-over slips to modify the form of prayer from offering prayers to King George III and his wife to new text praying for the United States. It is an extraordinary piece of evidence demonstrating the impact of newly declared independence on the religious life of the new United States. Though the Lords Baltimore, who established of the colony of Maryland, were Catholic, the colony's charter provided for worship of both Catholic and Protestant. The Anglican congregation at King and Queen Parish was established in 1640, shortly after the colony was founded. The Glorious Revolution of 1688, which ended any chance of Catholicism being reestablished as the official religion in England, paved the way for similar changes in the colonies. In Maryland, which became a royal colony in 1691, the Act of Establishment of 1692 declared the Church of England the official church of the colony, creating thirty Anglican parishes and stripping Catholic citizens of most of their rights. Because the King of England was head of the Anglican Church, members of the Church of England in America faced special difficulties during the American Revolution. Anglican priests, in fact, swore allegiance to the King at their ordination. The Book of Common Prayer offered prayers for the monarch, which could be construed as treason to the American cause. In an effort to remain loyal to the cause of Independence and conform to the new political realities, patriotic American Anglicans set about revising the Book of Common Prayer on the spot. On May 25, 1776 the Maryland Convention voted "that every Prayer and Petition for the King's Majesty, in the book of Common henceforth omitted in all Churches and Chapels in this Province." George Goldie, the rector of Christ Church (then called Chaptico Church) in King and Queen Parish of St. Mary's County from 1773 to his death in 1791, modified the present volume by inserting new prayers, written in manuscript, into the Litany. Four inserted slips modify the Litany to instruct for prayers to guide Congress and the governor of the state, as well as prayers for religious and civil liberty. These are affixed over prayers for King George III, Queen Charlotte, the Prince of Wales, etc. The petition that God "keep and strengthen in the true worshipping of thee, in righteousness and holiness of life, thy servant GEORGE, our most gracious King and Governour" was changed to a plea that "it might please thee to bless the honorable Congress with Wisdom to discern and Integrity to pursue the true Interest of the United States." The prayer that "it may please thee to be his defender and keeper, giving him the victory over all his enemies" becomes "that it [may please thee] to be their defender and keeper, enabling them to be the supporters & guardians of the civil and religious liberty of thy people." A prayer for the royal family is revised to ask that God "bless and preserve his Excel'y the Governor of this state, and so to replenish him with the grace of thy Holy Spirit that he may always incline to thy will and ever seek thy honour and glory." A prayer to "illuminate all Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, with true knowledge and understanding of thy word," now asks "to endue the Members of the Council with grace, wisdom and understanding, that they may become the happy instruments of promoting the honor of God and the good of the country." A highly important document, showing clear evidence of the changes affecting religious and everyday life during the American Revolution. ESTC T93064, N472494. GRIFFITHS 1768:4.

Two parts bound in one volume, octavo. Nineteenth century cloth backed marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered gilt.First edition of the book that gave the Physiocrats their name, one of the most important and original works on political economy to be published before The Wealth of Nations, volume two with the extremely rare first issue title page with a Peking imprint. Quesnay presented a copy of his book to Adam Smith, who described him as "ingenious and profound, a man of the greatest simplicity and modesty", while pronouncing Quesnay's system to be "with all its imperfections, perhaps the nearest approximation to the truth that has yet been published upon the subject of political economy". François Quesnay (1694-1774) was the court physician to Louis XV, and his notion of a circular flow of income throughout the economy was influenced by the contemporary discovery of blood circulation through the human body. He believed that trade and industry were not sources of wealth, and instead argued that the real economic movers were agricultural surpluses flowing through the economy in the form of rent, wages and purchases. Quesnay argued that regulation impedes the flow of income throughout all social classes and therefore economic development; and that taxes on the productive classes, such as farmers, should be reduced in favour of rises for unproductive classes, such as landowners, since their luxurious way of life distorts the income flow.
