[Hand-Colored] An account of Corsica, the journal of a tour to that island; and memoirs of Pascal Paoli. By James Boswell, Esq; Illustrated with a new and accurate map of Corsica

Glasgow: printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis for Edward and Charles Dilly in the Poultry, London, 1768. First Edition of Boswell's first important work, which launched his career and catapulted him to fame. Demy 8vo: xxi,[3],382pp, with final blank and large folding map of Corsica by Thomas Phinn in contemporary hand-color (second state, as per Rothschild, with imprint but without scale of miles, nor division of the margins into degrees, and placed before A1). Armorial bookplate of Westport House, County Mayo, Ireland, the Browne family crest. One of 3500 copies printed, among which are many variants (some described in Tinker), which may be found in any combination. In our copy, complete with "the very rare half-title" (Rothschild), the table of contents (b2) follows the preface (a3-b1); D2 recto is in Rothschild's first state, with the words "John Home" incorrectly placed following the first quotation on p. 51; E2 and Z3 are cancellanses, with "Mariani" spelled correctly (line 24, p. 357). Pottle additional misprints are also present: "141" for "241" in table of contents; broken "E" in "Etruscans" on p. 70, line 17; "feelirg" on p. 137, line 11; "tha the" on p. 172, line 9; "Montgomerÿ" on p. 184, line 4; "speculati-ions" on p. 327, lines 9-10; pp. 93 and 296 are correctly printed (the last words of line 6, p.93, are "prince of" and of line 18, p.296, "of my own"). Full contemporary mottled calf, green morocco lettering piece, all edges stained green, plain period end papers. A superb copy with the magnificent map of Corsica in rare hand-color; foxing to end papers and several quires, a few occasional minor stains, but withal fine. Tinker Library 318. Cox I p. 138. Gaskell (Foulis) 473. NCBEL II 1211. Pottle 24. Rothschild 442. Lowndes 242 ("first and uncastrated edition"). Boswell was a staunch supporter of the Corsican Republic: he took such "childish pleasure in being the chief sponsor of this wild island struggling to become a nation," that, for Garrick's anniversary celebration in honor of Shakespeare, in 1769, he dressed as a Corsican chief. (Cox). "Following the island's invasion by France, in 1768, Boswell attempted to raise public awareness and rally support for the Corsicans. He sent arms and money to the Corsican fighters, and made an arduous and dangerous journey to Corsica to meet General Pasquale Paoli, leader of the insurgents seeking the island's independence from the Genoese. Paoli at first suspected [Boswell] was a spy, but quickly came to like his improbable young visitor, saw an opportunity for promotion of the Corsican cause in Britain, and consented to a series of interviews. . . . With its reports of the gallant islanders and a Plutarchan depiction of Paoli paralleled with several classical heroes, [An Account of Corsica] was an immediate success. The work was widely read and translated [the first edition of 3500 copies was sold out within six weeks, and a second edition (also of 3500 copies) was ready a month or so later], stimulated great interest in Paoli and the Corsican cause, brought its author wide fame in Britain and Europe, and found an interested readership among the Americans. It attracted the notice of the French government (which had a translation made), and though Boswell's ambition for British intervention was not to be fulfilled, he probably influenced Britain's decision to send secret supplies of arms to the Corsicans." (ODNB) An ironic consequence of Paoli's ultimate defeat was that one of the first babies born under the new French jurisdiction was Napoleon Bonaparte, son of Paoli's adjutant. "The Account of Corsica was the book of the hour. Many more copies of it were sold in Boswell's lifetime than either of his great works in the biography of Johnson, and it achieved abroad a much more remarkable success." (Pottle) N. B.       - Chez Vincent, à Paris 1768, pet. in 8 (10,5x17,5cm), xxiij, 694pp. (8) et (4) 786pp; (1), 2 volumes reliés. - Edition. Legatoria in piena pelle di pecora marmorizzato periodo di fiera. I tappi incassati. Attrito. Buona copia.

Paris: Chez Musier, Fils, & Fournier, 1768. - 8,316,[3]pp. Half title. 12mo. Contemporary three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Extremities lightly rubbed. Old cancelled institutional stamps on half title. Bookplate on front pastedown. A fresh, clean copy. Very good. A rare account by the commander of the 1720 French scientific expedition to Louisiana, the French West Indies, and the Gulf of Mexico. Vallette Laudun led the first detailed survey made of Louisiana by the French government, three years after the founding of New Orleans and at the height of enthusiasm over John Law's Mississippi Company. "Vallette was the commander of the TOULOUSE, which sailed from Toulon in March, 1720, and reached Dauphin Island, on Mobile Bay, early in July" - Clark. The text consists of 132 letters to an unnamed French lady, which collectively provide a vivid picture of Vallette Laudun's voyage, the French dominions in Louisiana and the Mississippi Valley, and the things Vallette Laudun saw there. The same voyage is described in Laval's sumptuous work of 1728. Not in Servies but should be, as the author led the survey described by Laval, which Servies does include. One of the rarest early publications about Louisiana. HOWES V12. CLARK I:164. BELL V14. SABIN 98393. REESE, BEST OF THE WEST 4 (note).

2 vols.

A Londres, chez. J. Nourse, 1768, 4, (10). I-XVI, (8) pp., p.XVII, (1) (8), VIII pp., pp.401-828, (28), (13, 1) pp., mit 24 u.(2) Kupferstichtafel, 2 Pappbände der Zeit unbeschnitten und fast durchgehend frisches Exemplar. First Edition! The present work includes Arnaud's 150 pages long with 6 plates illustrated "Dissertation sur les hermaphrodites," ** two memoirs on testicles (including one on problems of testicle descent peculiar to priests!), two memoirs on hernias of the epiploon (omentum majus) and crura, and a French translation (entitled "Recherches sur les hernies de naissance") of chapter IX of William Hunter's Medical Commentaries (1762), which includes John Hunter's "Observations on the state of the testis in the foetus, and on the hernia congenita." Other chapters are devoted to aneurisms and various surgical instruments.**) " 'Hermaphrodites Parfait' qui ont l'occasion de s'unir ensemble charnellement" ("two 'perfect hermaphrodites' who were able to unite themselves carnally"). This is the first time that we encounter the concept of the "perfect hermaphrodite", i.e. a person who is capable of both producing sperm and becoming pregnant. The concept of the "imperfect hermaprodite" also existed, referring to one who is not able to procreate and having characters of both sexes but in incomplete form." "The existence of the condition of "perfect hermaphroditism" was confirmed by other surgeons. In 1768 George Arnaud de Ronsil described a famous case dating from 1663 in Valence, France: "Two young persons were married and some time later they were pregnant one of the other. They were persecuted as criminals, found guilty of an abominable crime and condemned to the fire, but Laurent Matheu, a Spanish doctor who was consulted about the case at the very moment that they were being taken to the place of the execution, decided in their favour, that the Church had given them the power of being United, and of being only one body." P.Santoni-Rugiu & P.J. Sykes, A History of Plastic Surgery (2007), pp.260-261"Even if fanciful illustrations of hermaphrodites had occured several times in books and prints, the figures in Arnauds work and the two copperplates by Moreau le Jeune seem to be the earliest depictions in printed form of this phenomena drawn daprès nature." TABLE analytique des matières contenues dans cette deuxiéme Partie.ARNAUD DE RONSIL (GEORGES), "a surgeon of some eminence in London, was originally a native of France, and a member of the Academy of surgery at Paris, which : city he left about the year forty-six or seven, and came to reside in London. Here he published several works, particularly on Ruptures the first was entitled "Dissertation on Ruptures," 1749, in 2 vols. l2mo, and in 1754 he published "Plain and familiar instructions to persons afflicted with Ruptures," 12mo "Observations on Anesurism,"1760 " Familiar instructions on the diseases of the Urethra and Bladder," 1763 "Dissertations on Hermaphrodites,"1765 " A discourse on the importance of Anatomy," delivered at Surgeons' hall, Jan. 21, 1767, 4to. His principal work appeared in 1768, entitled "Mémoires de Chirurgie, avec des remarques sur l'etat de la Médicine et de la Chirurgie en France et en Angleterre," 2 vols. 4to. This is the only work he published in French, after his coming to England, It consists of eleven memoirs, two of which are translated: from the English of Dr. Hunter's Medical Commentaries, on the Hernia Congenita, and a particular species of Aneurism. He appears, as a practitioner, to have possessed much skill, and as a writer to have been industrious in collecting information on the topics which employed his pen, but was somewhat deficient in judgment, and not a little credulous. So much was he attached to the ancient prejudices of his church, that he employs one of the memoirs in these volumes on the question, whether a rupture should incapacitate a man from performing the functions of the Romish priesthood, which he, however, is disposed to decide in the negative. He informs us +in this work, that he had studied rupture cases for the space of fifty years, and that the same study had been cultivated in his family for the space of 200 years. The only notice we have of his reputation in his own country is to be found in the discourse on Anatomy which he delivered in Surgeons' hall. In this he informs us that he had the honour to instruct Adelaide of Orleans, princess of the blood, and a very accomplished lady, in the operations of surgery.* " CHALMERS, A. The general biographical dictionary. 32 v. 1812-17.*) Biogr. Universelle. - Dict. Historique. - Month. Rev. vol. XLII. 1770Waller 475
