1768. 12mo. First edition. A rare and charming work on making ices, ice creams (fromages) and mousses. First Edition! The present work includes Arnaud's 150 pages long with 6 plates illustrated "Dissertation sur les hermaphrodites," ** two memoirs on testicles (including one on problems of testicle descent peculiar to priests!), two memoirs on hernias of the epiploon (omentum majus) and crura, and a French translation (entitled "Recherches sur les hernies de naissance") of chapter IX of William Hunter's Medical Commentaries (1762), which includes John Hunter's "Observations on the state of the testis in the foetus, and on the hernia congenita." Other chapters are devoted to aneurisms and various surgical instruments.**) " 'Hermaphrodites Parfait' qui ont l'occasion de s'unir ensemble charnellement" ("two 'perfect hermaphrodites' who were able to unite themselves carnally"). This is the first time that we encounter the concept of the "perfect hermaphrodite", i.e. a person who is capable of both producing sperm and becoming pregnant. The concept of the "imperfect hermaprodite" also existed, referring to one who is not able to procreate and having characters of both sexes but in incomplete form." "The existence of the condition of "perfect hermaphroditism" was confirmed by other surgeons. In 1768 George Arnaud de Ronsil described a famous case dating from 1663 in Valence, France: "Two young persons were married and some time later they were pregnant one of the other. They were persecuted as criminals, found guilty of an abominable crime and condemned to the fire, but Laurent Matheu, a Spanish doctor who was consulted about the case at the very moment that they were being taken to the place of the execution, decided in their favour, that the Church had given them the power of being United, and of being only one body." P.Santoni-Rugiu & P.J. Sykes, A History of Plastic Surgery (2007), pp.260-261"Even if fanciful illustrations of hermaphrodites had occured several times in books and prints, the figures in Arnauds work and the two copperplates by Moreau le Jeune seem to be the earliest depictions in printed form of this phenomena drawn daprès nature." TABLE analytique des matières contenues dans cette deuxiéme Partie.ARNAUD DE RONSIL (GEORGES), "a surgeon of some eminence in London, was originally a native of France, and a member of the Academy of surgery at Paris, which : city he left about the year forty-six or seven, and came to reside in London. Here he published several works, particularly on Ruptures the first was entitled "Dissertation on Ruptures," 1749, in 2 vols. l2mo, and in 1754 he published "Plain and familiar instructions to persons afflicted with Ruptures," 12mo "Observations on Anesurism,"1760 " Familiar instructions on the diseases of the Urethra and Bladder," 1763 "Dissertations on Hermaphrodites,"1765 " A discourse on the importance of Anatomy," delivered at Surgeons' hall, Jan. 21, 1767, 4to. His principal work appeared in 1768, entitled "Mémoires de Chirurgie, avec des remarques sur l'etat de la Médicine et de la Chirurgie en France et en Angleterre," 2 vols. 4to. This is the only work he published in French, after his coming to England, It consists of eleven memoirs, two of which are translated: from the English of Dr. Hunter's Medical Commentaries, on the Hernia Congenita, and a particular species of Aneurism. He appears, as a practitioner, to have possessed much skill, and as a writer to have been industrious in collecting information on the topics which employed his pen, but was somewhat deficient in judgment, and not a little credulous. So much was he attached to the ancient prejudices of his church, that he employs one of the memoirs in these volumes on the question, whether a rupture should incapacitate a man from performing the functions of the Romish priesthood, which he, however, is disposed to decide in the negative. He informs us +in this work, that he had studied rupture cases for the space of fifty years, and that the same study had been cultivated in his family for the space of 200 years. The only notice we have of his reputation in his own country is to be found in the discourse on Anatomy which he delivered in Surgeons' hall. In this he informs us that he had the honour to instruct Adelaide of Orleans, princess of the blood, and a very accomplished lady, in the operations of surgery.* " CHALMERS, A. Daar was een speciaal geconstrueerde vorstelijke loge geplaatst, volgens Wagenaar gebouwd door Jan Smit, en volgens Wagenaar naar ontwerp van de kunstschilder Andries van der Groen.

Titel des von 1755-1760 erschienenen englischen Originals: "Figures of uncommon plants described in the gardeners dictionary". First edition of all four Manila imprints, relating to the expulsion of the Jesuits, and the events leading up to the event. Medina praises the Memorial, which describes the disturbances and troubles created by the Jesuits "Es un document muy bien escrito y lleno de amargas verdades contra los frailes de Filipinas" (Medina, Manila, 279). The Aragonese Archbishop of Manila, Basilio Sancho de Santa Justa (1728 - 1787), arrived in Manila in 1767 after a five-month journey from Cadiz, appointed as Archbishop by commission of Pope Clement XIII, the architect of the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spanish domains. On 17 May 1768 the order for the expulsion of the Jesuits reached Manila, five days later an Edict condemning the teachings of the Jesuits was issued, and clearly invited obedience to the Spanish monarch and the Church, between 1768 and 1771 the Archbishop oversaw the complicated expulsion of 143 Jesuits from the Philippines who were sent to Cadiz on various ships, thus, he was an influential part of the expulsion and a well-positioned eyewitness to the process. The ships that carried out the Jesuits were Venus and Santa Rosa, a broadside imprint prohibiting them to preach whilst on board was issued by the Archbishop, in 1770. Palau, 296832, 296830 and 296833. Medina 278, 279, 280, 286 (who gives it as 1771). Leclerc, 1867, 1373.

1797.).Utrecht, G.T. van Paddenburg and son, 1799. 8vo. Original publisher's printed paper board wrappers.

Muller, America 344; Sabin 67626; WorldCat (7 copies). First edition of the Dutch translation of Ramel's account describing his escape from the penal colonies in Guiana. Jean-Pierre Ramel (1768-1815), officer in the French revolutionary army, was accused of royalist sympathies and consequently deported to the penal colonies in 1797, together with Jean-Charles Pichegru, François-Marie Barthelemy, François Aubry, Jean-Baptiste Dossonville, and others. In 1798, during a long and exhausting night, the prisoners managed to escape to Paramaribo, Surinam, from where they travelled back to Europe. In 1799 Ramel was given permission to return to France, where he served in the army under Rochambeau. After the Bourbon Restoration, he received the order of Saint Louis and was made "maréchal de camp". During the Second Restoration, however, Ramel was suspected of being loyal to Napoleon, which led to his assassination by reactionaries in 1815.Slightly browned with some occasional foxing. Spine slightly worn and discoloured. A very good copy, wholly untrimmed and in the original publisher's printed paper board wrappers.

MADAGASCAR – ANANTSON?O (ST. AUGUSTIN’S BAY) & TOLIARA (TULLEA): THE BAYS OF ST. AUGUSTIN AND TULLEA, ON THE WESTERN COASTS OF MADAGASCAR, SURVEYED IN 1755 AND 1768.

Copper engraving (Very Good, strong engraving impression, some minor loss to blank margin at upper and lower right corners, minor toning to outer part of left blank margin), 61 x 46 cm (24 x 18 inches). - London, 1794. A fine and scarce sea chart of St. Augustin’s (Anantson?o) and Tullea (Toliara) bays, amongst the finest anchorages on the west coast of Madagascar, published by the leading chartmakers of Laurie & Whittle. - This fine sea chart depicts the neighbouring bays of St. Augustin’s (Anantson?o) and Tullea (Toliara), which were important re-victualing places for ships sailing along the west coast of Madagascar. The chart is highly detailed, featuring copious nautical information, including bathymetric soundings, the locations of ideal anchorages, navigator’s sight lines, and the marking of hazards. There are also useful notes, such as the location of the ‘Wooding and Watering Place’ at St. Augustin’s Bay. The composition is completed by five elegant mariners’ coastal profile views, in the upper right. In particular, St. Augustin’s Bay was perhaps the finest natural anchorage along the Madagascar side of the Mozambique Channel. Since the passage was traversed by Europeans for the first time by Vasco da Gama, in 1498, during the first European sea voyage to India around Africa, it has been one of the most important shipping lanes in the world. While sheltered from the open Indian Ocean, it was a very dangerous passage, as it featured difficult winds and currents, along with several especially tricky nautical hazards. Beyond that, it also left ships vulnerable to attacks by pirates or vessels of enemy nations; such that a lack of knowledge of the navigation ensured that one would become easy prey. Tullea (Toliara), while not quite as accessible as its neighbouring harbour, was well-sheltered, abounded in natural produce and was favoured by many . SEE OUR WEB PAGE FOR LONGER DESCRIPTION.
