A Voyage Round the World In the Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV By George Anson, Commander in Chief of a Squadron of His Majesty';s Ships, sent upon and Expedition to the South-Seas

London: For T. Osbourne, H. Woodfall, W. Bowyer, et al;, 1767. Quarto. The twelfth edition, illustrated with forty-two copper-plates consisting of views, plans, charts, along with ships and sea animals most folding. 417pp., (1)pp. directions to the binder, folding chart of the world as frontispiece. Anson relied on several earlier manuscripts and other documentation to make his voyage and he received further information from a host of captives and the governments of some of the countries he visited so he could accurately describe each country, port or its inhabitants in full and true detail along with the most accurate drawings of maps and charts that he believed would be most useful to future historians or travelers. A very nice clean copy with all maps, charts and plans as called for, bound in full contemporary calf, boards trimmed in a decorative gilt roll, early rebacking to style. Raised bands gilt, dark brown morocco label gilt, corners worn or somewhat bent, early owner's armorial bookplate, internally clean with only occasional offsetting, minor shipping to outer margins of a couple of plates not affecting images. An important and desirable work.

[Two Crabs: an Edible Crab and a Spider Crab]

Nuremberg, 1767. Fine hand-coloured engraved plate. Knorr was one of the leading proto-geologists of the eighteenth century as well as an excellent engraver, painter and art dealer. Born in Nuremberg, he was initially apprenticed to his father's trade of wood turning, but at the age of eighteen became an engraver of copper-plates for Leonhard Blanc, working with Martin Tyroff on the illustrations for Jacob Scheuchzer's Physica Sacra (1731). This work and his acquaintance with J.A. Beurer, a mineralogist-correspondent of the Royal Society, quickened Knorr's interest in natural history. Further stimulus was provided by the wealthy doctor and polymath Christoph Jakob Trew, owner of a menagerie as well as a wide-ranging natural history collection. Trew gathered around him a highly talented group of artists, engravers and scientists, all of whom contributed to making Nuremberg a centre for the publication of top quality large format natural history books. In this stimulating intellectual atmosphere Knorr went on to publish a number of lavish folio volumes, but the present work is his masterpiece. It is also one of the greatest fruits of this flowering of talent in Nuremberg. It acted as a showcase for the talented artists working in the city (most of whom were patronised by Trew). Beautifully designed and executed, the work includes some of the finest natural history plates ever produced. Cf. BM (NH) II, p.998; cf. Landwehr 97 (Dutch edition); Nissen ZBI 2227 & cf. 2229.

        Bélisaire

Paris: Chez Merlin 8vo (19.9 cm, 7.8"). [4], x, 340, [6] pp.; 4 plts.. 1767 First edition, early state, featuring the frontispiece and three copper-engraved plates designed by Gravelot. Quickly translated into numerous languages following its initial publication, Marmontel's controversial philosophical novel was written in great part in the hope that its retelling of the story of Gen. Flavius Beisarius of the Byzantine Empire would convince Louis XV to become, himself, the longed-for Philosopher-King. Chapter 15, however, in which Marmontel advocates freedom of opinion and religious tolerance, inspired extensive commentary by Voltaire and others and brought on condemnation by both the Sorbonne and the Archbishop of Paris — though it may ultimately have helped the Huguenot cause. Merlin also printed a duodecimo edition in 1767; in the present edition, "Fragmens de philosophie morale" is found on pp. 273?-340, followed by the Addition and Approbation. Provenance: Front pastedown with large, round, gilt-stamped armorial leather bookplate of notable 19th-century book collector Edward Hailcrone; smaller, round, cream-colored leather gilt-stamped ?"I.T.?" bookplate with motto ?"Inter folia fructus?" of 19th-century bookseller and bookcollector James Toovey; and paper bookplate of Sir Montague Shearman. Binding: Contemporary crimson morocco, covers framed in gilt triple fillets; spine gilt extra with gilt-stamped leather labels, board edges and turn-ins with gilt rolls. This volume (complete in itself) seems at one time to have been part of a set of Marmontel's works, and bears an (unnumbered) spine label reading "Oeuvres de Marmontel. Binding as above, with edges, extremities, and joints showing minor rubbing. Front pastedown with bookplates as above; front free endpaper with affixed slip of early cataloguing; rear pastedown with small chip out of paper. Light spots of foxing, slightly heavier around plates. All edges gilt.

[5] ff., 128 pp.. 1767 Huastec is the northernmost dialect of the Maya language. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was spoken in Puebla, Veracruz, and San Luis Potosí. Works of any category in this language are rarely found, this being => the first surviving published grammar and the first dictionary. The catechism is bilingual (Spanish and Huastec) as is the doctrine. Both are important for the study of moral and doctrinal concerns by the clergy among the indigenous population. Tapia Zenteno was not only an important Mexican linguist and professor of Mexican languages at the Royal and Pontifical University, but was also a comisario for the Inquisition. This work of his is dedicated to Archbishop Francisco Antonio Lorenzana, a man deeply interested in the indigenous culture and the conquest of it, and the man who produced Cortés's letters in a fine and wonderfully illustrated edition in Mexico in 1770. He also paid for the publication of this work, and his coat of arms appears at the top of the Dedication in an engraving by Manuel Villavicencio, one of Mexico's finest engravers. The volume is handsomely printed, with a nicely composed typographic border to its title-page, an elegant headpiece and a scenic initial "E" on its p. 1, and a modest but charming typographic "surround" for its final leaf's "O MARIA." Provenance: Marca de fuego on upper edges of closed book, most likely of the Franciscan Convento de Santa María Magdalena de San Martín Texmelucan, Puebla; early 19th-century pressure-stamp of a private Spanish-language collector on title-page; faint 19th-century case and shelf rubber-stamp in English on front free endpaper. Contemporary limp vellum lacking the leather ties. An attractive, crisp copy and only the fourth complete copy of this work we have seen on the market in 35 years.

Not much is known of the author only that he was a gifted writer and musician, and published only one other work Nuovo acciarino pneumatico (ca. 1800).With a short manuscript description of the work on paste-down. Bel exemplaire. Kress, 4142 ; Goldsmiths, 10266 ; Einaudi, 2683 ; INED, 2126 ; Higgs, 4142. [Attributes: First Edition]

The best known of Patte's written contributions to architecture (Millard). ?? As a friend and colleague of Jacques-François Blondel, Pierre Patte is responsible for the final two volumes of text and the las volume of plates of Blondel's Cours d'architecture. Patte's most important publication, and the work by which he is best known today, is his treatise Monumens à la gloire de Louis XV, which includes the compilation and analysis of important urban planning projects. Like many publications of this period, this treatise was written in celebration of the glory and authority of Louis XV, and as a demonstration of the king's support for the arts of architecture and urban planning in Paris and in other French cities. ??         Dissertation sur la preeminence des chats

Amsterdam: Barthelemi Vlam, 1767. Very good antiquarian condition. Octavo, printed on strong paper. viii, 204, [11] pp. With large woodcut monogram of the publisher on title, large folding genealogical table of an Asian cat, and 10 full-page engraved plates (of which 2 are folding) illustrating cats, engraved by T. Otten after drawings by Charles-Antoine Coypel (1694-1752). Later quarter vellum over marbled boards, red morocco label on spine, marbled edges. ADDED: A copy of the English translation: "Moncrif's Cats. Les Chats de Francois Augustin Paradis de Moncrif" (New York: A. S. Barnes & Co. 1965). Translated by Reginald Bretnor. Original cloth, dust-jacket. THE FIRST "CAT-BOOK" AS WE KNOW IT. Moncrif's "Les Chats" is recognized as one of the earliest books exclusively devoted to cats; the illustrations are absolutely charming. One of the engravings depicts a cat on the deathbed of his/her mistress, who dictates to her attorney and a notary her last will and testament, at which time she bequeathes her entire fortune to her cat! It is believed that this woman was none other than Madame du Deffand, at whose request Coypel illustrated the work. Other illustrations show the Cat-God of Egypt, cats enthroned, the tomb of a cat, a cat's theater, and more. Written in the form of letters to a lady from the court, Moncrif's "Chats" addresses the status of the cat at different points throughout history; the writing style is not only erudite but also frivolous. Included are various "love-letters" between cats, some cat-fables, letters from a cat to a dog, and an actual dramatic play for cats! "In 18th century France, the cat veritably embodied the ethos of salons and court culture: winsome and graceful, languid and seductive, possessed of soft paws that hid its sharp claws, astute and proud, snobbish and artful, playful and pleasure loving, the mysterious creature perfectly mirrored the qualities of its owners. 'Les Chats' is composed of two parts: the first, written in the form of letters to an aristocratic lady, is a mock treatise in defense of the cat, a graceful parody of punctilious scholarship. The second part, in verse, contains artfully crafted correspondence between a seductive female cat and her male counterpart; included is also a play with an all-feline dramatis personae: a tragedy of unrequited love, intrigue, death and revenge. Complementing the work are a few additional cat poems, two of which were not authored by Moncrif: a mournful epitaph of a cat by Joachim du Bellay, and a witty fable by the Chevalier de S. Gilles" (SOURCE: University of North Texas announcement of "The Cat's Our of the Bag: Recent Acquisitions in Special Collections"). Published anonymously in 1727 under the title "Les Chats," the identity of the author soon became known, and Moncrif was subjected to ridicule by his "more scholarly" colleagues such as Voltaire. However, the book became immensely popular and has gone through numerous editions; it remains highly prized even to the present day. Our copy belongs to the fourth edition, and is distinguished by being a complete copy in excellent condition, as well as being correctly priced. Francois Augustin Paradis de Moncrif (1687-1770) was a celebrated poet, musician and playwright who delighted the French aristocracy and high society. Moncrif's cat-book masterwork continues to enchant all audiences; it is a joy to behold and must be seen to be fully appreciated. REFERENCES: Lewine, p. 364 (1741 edition). Not in Cohen-De Ricci. See also Robert Darnton, "The Great Cat Massacre" p. 272: "The most important literary version of cat lore to appear in Contat's time was 'Les Chats' by Francois Augustin Paradis de Moncrif. Although it was a mock treatise aimed at a sophisticated audience, it drew upon a vast array of popular superstitions and proverbs, many of which appeared in the collections of folklorists a century and a half later.

Naval Tactics; Or, a Treatise of Evolutions and Signals, With Cuts, Lately Published in France, ...By Mons. De Morogues, ...Translated By a Sea-Officer.

London: W. Johnston, 1767. 4to. xxvi (page xi misnumbered ix, and page xxiv mislabeled as xxvi), 152 pp. b/w plates, some folding. This is the first English translation of MoroguesÂ’ “Tactique Navale,” originally published in France in 1763. Morogues was the founder of the Marine Academy at Brest, and is perhaps best remembered for his able performance as Captain of Magnifique at Quiberon in 1759. See CorbettÂ’s Signals and Instructions 1776-1794. Also, Scott, 316, and Adams & Waters 161. One folding order of Battle at Malaga, 1704, (page 95*) and eight terminal folding engraved plates of tactical maneuvers. Bound in contemporary marbled boards; rebacked in goat with leather label. Minor tanning and staining. Lacking rear end paper, but a nice wide margined copy, untrimmed. Early ownership signature of Stephen Hill on the front flyleaf. Quite a scarce book. Worldcat notes but four libraries, only one of which is in America, holding copies.
