Princess of Babylon is the story of thwarted love across Europe (and akin to that view in Candide) and Asia in which Voltaire passed different opinions about religion and intolerance.

The Present State of Great Britain and North America, with regard to Agriculture, Population, Trade, and Manufactures, impartially considered: Containing a particular account of the dearth and scarcity of the necessities of life in England; the want of staple commodities in the Colonies; the decline of their trade; increase of people; and necessity of manufactures, as well as of a trade in them hereafter. In which the causes and consequences of these growing evils, and methods of preventing them, are suggested; the proper regulations for the Colonies, and the taxes imposed on them, are considered, and compared with their condition and circumstances

London: T. Becket and P. A. De Hondt. 1767., 1767. Rare First (and only) Edition. Octavo. pp. [5] xvi, 363. Errata printed to verso of final page. Re-spined by Atkinson's using original brown calf boards. New matching spine has raised bands and gilt titles. All edges flecked red. boards heavily battered, and some browning and brittleness to outer pages. Generally crisp and clean. Rear free end paper folded and slightly torn. Very good overall. A Virginian Botanist, Mitchell is best known for his 1755 map of North America, used during the 1783 Treaty of Paris. This book was written in response to the challenging circumstances experienced in the North American Colonies following the Seven Years War, apparently exacerbated by government policy. With hindsight, it clearly prefigures the American Revolution.         A report of some proceedings on the commission of oyer and terminer and gaol delivery for the trial of the rebels in the year 1746 in the county of Surry [sic], and of other Crown cases. To which are added discourses upon a few branches of the Crown law

Dublin: Printed for Sarah Cotter 8vo (19.5 cm, 7.6"). x, 412 pp., [10] ff.. 1767 Second Irish printing, following the Oxford first of 1762 and the Dublin first of 1763: one of the most authoritative and scholarly of such reports of the time, accompanied by examinations of treason, homicide, accessories, the writings of Lord Hale, etc. The trial mentioned in the title refers to that of those arrested for participation in the Jacobite rising of 1745, an attempt by "Bonnie Prince Charlie" (i.e., Charles Edward Stuart) to regain the British throne. (He had timed his effort for a moment when much of the British military was occupied on the continent by the War of the Austrian Succession.) Cotter was the daughter of Joseph Cotter and successor to his printing business. She was active from 1757 to 1767 and published/printed law, technical, and religious books, belles lettres, and a wide variety of other productions. Her press produced two variants of this edition; in the present example, the colon after "Dublin" in the imprint is above the n of "in," and the catchword on p. 406 is "manner." Binding: Contemporary limp suede with envelope flap, portion of original tie still present. Provenance: Front pastedown and free endpaper with early inked ownership inscriptions of Gryff[yth?] Price. Binding as above, rebacked with mottled sheep with gilt-stamped leather title-label; edges rubbed, flap leather cracking and refurbished with same leather used on spine as well as internally reinforced with marbled paper. Endpapers with offsetting to margins, inscriptions as above. Pages with a very few instances of faint foxing. => A nice copy, easily imaginable as an Irish lawyer's portable reading and reference.

      - Kupferstich von Franz Xaver Jungwirth nach Franz Kürzinger, dat. 1767, 27 x 40,5 cm. Thieme-Becker Bd. Sehr selten.

        Abbildung auslaendischer Materialien

Berlin, 1767. Folio (37.3 x 24.3 cm). Decorative water colour title page, manuscript text within a garland of flowers and insects, and 86 water-colour plates of plants, manuscript index leaf at the end. Preserved in modern marbled clamshell box.l A beautiful original manuscript of foreign, mostly exotic, useful and medicinal plants. The fine watercolours are heightened with gouache and are numbered 1-53a, 53b-85, and inscribed with their Latin names. At the lower margin the Linnaean nomenclature is given with reference to his 'Genera Plantarum'. The index leaf lists a plate 86, Euphorbia, which is not present and presumably perished. The manuscript portrays many flowering or seed-bearing plants of medical or agricultural importance: Jamaican pepper, cashew, cacao, camphor tree, caper, cardamom, cloves, quinine bark, China root, Arabian coffee, bitter cucumber, Indian saffron, date palm, Indian fig (the tree is considered sacred in India as it often shelters a little temple underneath), dwarf ginseng, tree-of-life, indigo, nutmeg, opium, Indian pepper, black pepper, St. John's bread, Indian date, vanilla plant, poison nut - many originating from India. On one plate, the nettle, the butterfly Papilio atalanta L. and its caterpillar, which specifically occurs on this plant, are illustrated. The frontispiece shows more colourful insects including butterflies and beetles, as well as flowering plants. Andreas Friedrich Happe (1733-1802) was a well-known artist, engraver, and naturalist as well as a pharmacist. He was born in Aschersleben and died in Berlin in 1802. He published a number of books on pharmaceutical botany of which the most important is his 'Botanica pharmaceutica…' Berlin 1785 (-1806). He was also the artist for the plates of the first two volumes of Martini & Chemnitz 'Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet'. However, he is better known for his botanical artwork. The Oak Spring Garden Library has a four volume 'Herbarium pictum', an impressive collection of 403 watercolours. The Hunt Botanical Library possesses a manuscript by him: 'Flora Happiana', with 471 watercolours. The Amsterdam bookseller Junk sold a manuscript of Happe in 1997: 'Insecten-Belustigung. Frid. Happe. Berlin 1769-1784', with a fine frontispiece (title within a garland of flowers), and 133 original watercolours. In 2008, a large collection of original watercolours by Happe - 'Conspectus Praecipuarum Plantarum…' Berlin 1790-1794, with 1146 original watercolours - was offered by the Parisian bookseller Thomas-Scheler. The Latin captions have some ink bleeding. Three plates with marginal repair. A unique and interesting collection, not recorded by any bibliographer. For similar works see: An Oak Spring Herbaria, 39; and Hunt, 659.

[ARCHIVE OF MANUSCRIPTS FROM AND RELATING TO THE ISLAND OF MAURITIUS]

[Mauritius. 1767-1817].. Approximately thirty-four items, totaling 75pp. plus several other later or tangential items. Mostly folio and quarto sheets, with a few smaller pieces. Light soiling and wear throughout, heavier to some documents. Overall good to very good. A superb archive of manuscripts spanning more than fifty years of French colonial history in the southern Indian Ocean, and reflecting the extreme danger of some of France's farthest-flung endeavors, especially during the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. Among the manuscripts offered are letters signed by Mauritius governor, Malartic, to the governor of Réunion, and an instruction given to the Chevalier de Sanglier sent to Mauritius by the Commander of the French troops in Madagascar, Maurice Auguste, Baron Benyovszky. The earliest item is a letter from the Cesar Gabriel de Choiseul, Duc de Praslin, regarding the precarious social climate in the colony. At that time, the Compagnie des Indes was handing over control of the island to the French government. There are eight autograph manuscripts signed by Anne Joseph Hippolyte de Maures de Malartic - Governor of the island, "Le Citoyen President," and "Sauveur de la Colonie" - regarding the governing of the islands during the French Revolution. All are dated at the Ile de France from 1793 to 1794. There are also two autograph letters on the printed letterhead of Maurice Auguste, Baron Benyovszky, regarding the supplies needed for his Madagascar colony, including tens of thousands of seeds for coffee and cotton. An officer of the Hapsburg army during the Seven Years' War, Benyovszky later served in the Confederation of Bar and assisted with a rebellion against the King of Poland, for which he was eventually imprisoned in Siberia. He managed to organize a rebellion among the Polish soldiers, commandeer a ship, and sail through the Aleutian islands and on to Taiwan and then Macau, where he befriended French diplomats. He used his new contacts to arrange an audience with Louis XV, to whom he proposed a French colony on Madagascar - King Louis was intrigued enough to agree and he appointed Benyovszky Governor of the new colony. Two further manuscripts relate to the precarious position in which the French colonists found themselves during the Mauritius campaign of 1809-1811. "Croyez, Messieurs, que Sa Majesté L'Empereur, Saura apprécier ce nouvel acte de Votre dévouement...." Dated at the Ile de France, 31 8bre 1809. There is also a group of letters and other items from 1853 relating to Eugene Leclezio, the man who seems to have assembled all of the manuscripts. It includes several small manuscript maps of the island and the region in the Indian Ocean. There are also several later printed and manuscript items related to the same subjects. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. A unique and fascinating archive of manuscript material relating to French activities in the Indian Ocean.

A Voyage round the World In His Majesty's Ship the Dolphin, commanded by the Honourable Commodore Byron In which is contained, a faithful account of the several places, people, plants, animals, &c seen on the voyage: and, among other particulars, a minute and exact description of the Streights of Magellan, and of the gigantic people called Patagonians Together with an accurate account of seven islands lately discovered in the South Seas By an officer on board the said ship

Dublin: Printed for J. Hoey, Senior [and 11 others], 1767. Small octavo, with a folding engraved frontispiece; contemporary mottled calf, localised insect damage affects the boards, internally an attractive copy. Scarce Dublin version of the first published account of the voyage of the Dolphin, which set out in 1764 under the command of Byron to make discoveries in the South Seas: she was specially fitted for the voyage and was the first vessel in the English Navy to be sheathed in copper. It was a swift circumnavigation and probably helped to persuade the Admiralty to commission Cook's first voyage. The official account of the Dolphin voyage is contained in the first volume of the Hawkesworth collection, published six years later and better known for its official account of Cook's first voyage; like the surreptitious accounts of the three Cook voyages, this narrative by Clerke easily won the race to publication but remained anonymous to circumvent Admiralty rulings about the commercial use of shipboard journals.Clerke was to sail on all three of Cook's voyages, eventually taking command of the third voyage after Cook's death; he died in Kamchatka during the later part of the voyage.

Verona, Moroni, 1767.

Pp. xxxii, 277, (3). With one engraved folding plate. Contemporary marbled paper boards, vellum spine, later title label, blue edges, rubbed and restored. First rare edition of this biographical account of missionary Giuseppe Bernini (1709 - 61) written by his friend Cassiano da Macerata, known as the compiler of "Alphabetum Tangutanum sive Tibetanum" (1773). Both were Italian Capuchin missionaries who served for many years in India and also joined the mission in Tibet under Orazio della Penna. He founded the mission in Tibet in 1725 but it was closed in 1733 due to lack of funds. Della Penna returned to Europe asking for increased support from the Vatican and in 1738 the Capuchin mission was re - established in Tibet. Giuseppe Bernini and Cassiano da Macerata arrived in Lhasa in 1741 to join the mission there. However, after a few years with problems mainly due to opposition from the Buddhist priesthood both Bernini and Cassiano left for Nepal and India. They continued their missionary activities in Nepal and India; at Chandannagar (West Bengal) and Bettiah in Bihar (close to the India - Nepal border). Both Bernini and Cassiano wrote accounts describing the people, their manners and religious beleifs. They were: "Notizie Laconiche di Alcunzi Usi, Sacrifizi ed Idoli nel Regno di Neiptla" 1747 by Bernini and "Giornale di fra' Cassiano dalla sua partenza da Macerata seguita gli 17 agosto 1738 fino al suo ritorno nel 1756" by Cassiano. Neither of the mss have been published, only parts of Cassiano's work in the 20th century. This rare and interesting work describes Bernini's voyage via Pondichery, Chandannagar, Bihar, and Pattna before reaching Lhasa, and follows with valuable information about Tibet and India. Includes several letters by Bernini, of which one is an extract of "Descrizione di una spezie di Martirio sofferta da' novelli cristiani del Thibet". Not in Cordier. Not in Löwendahl. Not in Yakushi.

Editio secunda.

Leiden, apud Samuel et JoannesLuchtmans, 1767.. Small 4to. (14), CXXXII, 603, (69) pp. With engraved vignette and the engraved coat of arms of Wilhelm Count Bentink. Contemp. half calf with giltstamped spine label.. Erpenius's famous grammar, a landmark in Arabic studies until the early 19th century. This edition is a line-for-line reprint of the 1748 edition (which in turn repeated the one edited by Golius in 1656), with only the indexes expanded. It also contains a collection of pre-Islamic folk songs, the "Hamasah" of Abu Tammam, added by the editor Schultens, as well as an extensive preface discussing the relationship between Hebrew and Arabic. Erpenius (1584-1624), professor of oriental languages at Leiden, first published his "Grammatica Arabica" in 1613, having completed it four years earlier while staying in Paris with Casaubon. He is regarded as "one of the men whom the study of oriental languages owes its resurrection [...] He set up his own printing shop with Hebrew, Arabic, Syrian, Ethiopian, and Turkish type" (cf. ADB). Until well into the 19th century his works, published in numerous editions, remained the foundation of Arabic language teaching in the west. The editor of this edition, Albert Schultens (1686-1750), also served as professor of Oriental Languages at Leiden (1732-1750). During his lifetime he was the principal teacher of Arabic in Europe, and followed Erpenius's tradition in restoring the reputation of Arabic studies, vindicating the importance of the comparative study of the Semitic languages against those who regarded Hebrew as a sacred language beyond the realm of comparative philology. - Spine slightly rubbed, minor foxing to title page, otherwise in very good condition. - Schnurrer 106.         The History of the Life of King Henry the Second, And of the Age in which he lived, in Five Books

      - London - W. Sandby and J. Dodsley 1767 - A set of The History of the Life of King Henry the Second by Lord Lyttelton. Complete in three volumes. Collated complete. To which is prefixed, a History of the Revolution of England From the Death of Edward the Confessor to the Birth of Henry the Second. George Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton PC (17 January 1709 24 August 1773), known as Sir George Lyttelton, Bt between 1751 and 1756, was a British statesman and patron of the arts. Lord Lyttelton was the son of Sir Thomas Lyttelton, 4th Baronet, by his wife Christian, daughter of Sir Richard Temple, 3rd Baronet. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He was one of the politicians who opposed Robert Walpole as a member (one of Cobham's Cubs) of the Whig Opposition the 1730s. He served as secretary to Frederick, Prince of Wales, from 1737, and as a Commissioner of the Treasury in 1744. After Walpole's fall, Lyttelton became Chancellor of the Exchequer (1755). In 1756 he was raised to the peerage as Lord Lyttelton, Baron of Frankley in the County of Worcester. Lord Lyttelton was a friend and supporter to Alexander Pope in the 1730s and to Henry Fielding in the 1750s. James Thomson addresses him throughout his poem The Seasons, and Lyttelton arranged a pension for Thomson. He wrote Dialogues of the Dead in 1760 with Elizabeth Montagu, leader of the bluestockings, and The History of the Life of Henry the Second (17671771). The former work is part of a tradition of such dialogues. Henry Fielding dedicated Tom Jones to him. Lyttelton spent many years and a fortune developing Hagley Hall and its park which contains many follies. The hall itself, which is in north Worcestershire, was designed by Sanderson Miller and is the last of the great Palladian houses to be built in England. Condition: In full calf leather bindings with contrasting labels to the spines. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Joints are tender. Front board is held by cords only on volume III. There is some loss to the leatheron volume II. Internally, generally firmly bound, though hinges are slightly tender. The front end paper is working loose in volume III. Pages are generally bright and clean with some browning to the end papers. There is an ink inscription to the recto of front free end papers in all volumes. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Theory of Moral Sentiments To which is added A Dissertation on the Origin of Languages The Third Edition

London, A.Millar , 1767 Kress 6496. Goldsmith 10384. Vanderblue p.38. Mossner, The Correspondence of Adam Smith, pp.122. Ross, Life of Adam Smith, pp.89-90 [on Dissertation...Languages] The third edition of Adam Smith?s first published work [first edition 1759]. Adam Smith devoted the years 1755 to 1759 mainly to writing and publishing The Theory of Moral Sentiments. He had been appointed Professor of Logic at Glasgow in 1751 and elected Professor of Moral Philosophy a year later. It was this period at Glasgow College which Adam Smith was later to describe as "the period of thirteen years which I spent as a member of that society I remember as by far the most useful, and, therefore, as by far the happiest and most honourable period of my life". It has been said that if the Wealth of Nations had never been written, this work would have earned him a prominent place in intellectual history. Sensitive, original, erudite, eloquent ?" it reveals the full stature of Adam Smith?s genius and insight into his tastes and personality. The book immediately established a reputation for him in learned circles well beyond the bounds of his own university. It secured for him an international reputation as a philosopher.Adam Smith wrote to his publisher William Strahan The Dissertation upon the Origin of Languages is to be printed at the end of the Theory. There are some literal errors in the printed copy of it which I should have been glad to have corrected, but have not the opportunity, as I have no copy by me. They are of no great consequence. In the titles, both of the Theory and the Dissertation, call me simply Adam Smith without any addition either before or behind. The Dissertation was first published in The Philological Miscellany in 1761 and in all subsequent editions of The Theory of Moral Sentiments.

Bordeu was the principal representative of 18th century French clinical medicine, and played a great role in the history of medical theories. "He held that the organs of the body, with their several functions are federated with and dependent upon each other... Bordeu first stated the doctrine that not only each gland, but each organ of the body, is the workshop of a specific substance or secretion, which passes into the blood, and upon these the integration of the body as a whole

Autograph Notice forbidding hunting on the lands of 15 subscribers, headed "Advertisement" and likely intended for publication in a local newspaper

N.p. [Colonial America], 1767. 1 vols. 8-1/4 x 6-1/2 inches. Some stains, old folds, some cracking, but all present, and attractive overall. An Early American Manuscript Posting Announcement An intriguing document, written in various hands on fine laid paper on which appears to be a French watermark of an elaborate cartouche over the words "V. Guerevin". It is titled "Advertisement" and reads: "This is to Give notes to all Persons that we the subscribers do forworn all Persons from hunting with Gun or Dogs on our Lands / August ye 6th 1767" Below this are the signatures of 15 individuals, four of whom, unable to sign, have made their mark on the document under their name. Among the legible names are those of Laurence Riley, William Abbott Lener, Thomas Dutten, Richard Von Cade, James Reed, Edward Stevenson, John Jouller [?], John Abbott, Dennis Morris, Jacob Morris, Mary Morris, Woolma Donovan, Foster Donovan.Although there is no indication of where this document originated, we believe it to have been in the American Colonies--possibly, in view of the names, in the area around New York. While the posting of individual property was, and is, commonplace, it is highly unusual to find a group doing so collectively, and this would most likely happen if each of the holdings was relatively small. The nature of the notice suggests that the properties were contiguous, and were probably farmland. In the England of the day, the number of small, independent farmers owning contiguous property was not large--small farmers usually worked as tenants to a large landowner, who typically enjoyed hunting and shooting over his estates. In addition, it was far more common in America than in England for members of the same family to have land adjacent or in proximity to one another, as may have been the case above with the Morrises and Donovans. Small farmers were the backbone of Colonial America, and this document is a tribute to their spirit of enterprise and independence, which was soon to come to fruition in another form.A UNIQUE AND FASCINATING DOCUMENT, AND A RARE ITEM OF COLONIAL AMERICANA.

Paris: Durand, 1767. - 3 volumes. 12mo., (6 2/8 x 3 6/8 inches). Half-titles. Fine folding engraved map of California, woodcut and typographic initials and head- and tailpieces. Contemporary French mottled calf, each cover decorated with a border of triple gilt fillets, the spines in six compartments with five raised bands, with red and citron morocco lettering-pieces in the second and third, the others decorated with small gilt spider web tools edges (a bit rubbed). The work was widely disseminated during the decade following its publication through translations into English, French, Dutch and German. It remains one of the primary printed sources of the region's early colonial history. Attributed to Marc Antoine Eidous, the present "rather precise" French translation (Wagner) was made from the 1759 English version of the text. Venegas's name is nowhere mentioned, and the translation omits Appendices 6 and 7, De Lisle's Mémoire, and the account of the voyage of Admiral Fonte. The map of California reproduces the frontispiece map of the original edition, without the ten decorative border vignettes of the original. A variant issue of this edition is recorded, with the first title-page dated 1766. Howes V-69; Wagner, Spanish Southwest 132b; Hill 1769; Sabin 98843.
