        Bélisaire

Paris: Chez Merlin, 1767. 8vo (19.9 cm, 7.8"). [4], x, 340, [6] pp.; 4 plts. First edition, early state, featuring the frontispiece and three copper-engraved plates designed by Gravelot. Quickly translated into numerous languages following its initial publication, Marmontel's controversial philosophical novel was written in great part in the hope that its retelling of the story of Gen. Flavius Beisarius of the Byzantine Empire would convince Louis XV to become, himself, the longed-for Philosopher-King. Chapter 15, however, in which Marmontel advocates freedom of opinion and religious tolerance, inspired extensive commentary by Voltaire and others and brought on condemnation by both the Sorbonne and the Archbishop of Paris — though it may ultimately have helped the Huguenot cause. Merlin also printed a duodecimo edition in 1767; in the present edition, "Fragmens de philosophie morale" is found on pp. 273–340, followed by the Addition and Approbation. Provenance: Front pastedown with large, round, gilt-stamped armorial leather bookplate of notable 19th-century book collector Edward Hailcrone; smaller, round, cream-colored leather gilt-stamped “I.T.” bookplate with motto “Inter folia fructus” of 19th-century bookseller and bookcollector James Toovey; and paper bookplate of Sir Montague Shearman. Binding: Contemporary crimson morocco, covers framed in gilt triple fillets; spine gilt extra with gilt-stamped leather labels, board edges and turn-ins with gilt rolls. This volume (complete in itself) seems at one time to have been part of a set of Marmontel's works, and bears an (unnumbered) spine label reading "Oeuvres de Marmontel. Binding as above, with edges, extremities, and joints showing minor rubbing. Front pastedown with bookplates as above; front free endpaper with affixed slip of early cataloguing; rear pastedown with small chip out of paper. Light spots of foxing, slightly heavier around plates. All edges gilt.

        La Perruche Banks, pl. 50

A beautifully detailed  hand colored copperplate engraving by Jacques Barraband (1767-1809) From Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets Paris: 1801-5. Overall this print measures 12"x18". Jacques Barraband?s (1767-1809) engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. These stunning portraits were done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on African ornithology, including the lavish and striking Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets. Images of African birds were popular in early 19th-century France both for their exoticism and for the interest in Africa that Napoleon?s campaigns were generating. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. The project was a massive undertaking, which required over 300 finished watercolors. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband?s engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. The meticulous hand-colored engravings in Levaillant?s publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation. Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of thecheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciousness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds? feathers. The present selection of images represents an opportunity to acquire spectacular engraving by a foremost 19th-century natural history artist. We will not be knowingly undersold on this work of art..Overall this print is in very good condition with some light foxing/staining and eveidence of prevoius binding in margins.

12 Bll., 240 S.; 8 Bll., 562 S., 14 Bll. Lederband d. Zt. mit Rückenverg. Humpert 3825; Sachse 261; Menger 51. Justi fordert "the creation of a `Manufacturhaus` to accelerate the sale of the finished products of the industrial class. Taking the ideal of economic self-sufficiency as his point of departure, he is more interested in effecting centralized control of industry than in commercial expansion." (ESS VIII, 508).

Herefordshire, England, 1767. First edition. None. Fine. An important Trollope Family Marriage Indenture: "Settlement made on the Marriage of Mr. Anthony Trollope & Miss Penelope Meetkerke 2nd Novr. 1767". A three page document handwritten in ink on vellum. The document sets forth a tripartite agreement respecting financial contributions to the marriage and is signed by Sir Thomas and Anthony Trollope on the Groom's side, Adolphus and Penelope Meetkerke on the Bride's side , and, as executors, by Thomas Middleton Trollope, William Trollope, Ralph Freeman, and Charles Meetkerke. The couple (Reverend Anthony Trollope and Penelope Trollope (Meetkerke) had four children born to their marriage, the eldest being Anthony Trollope, the failed barrister, failed farmer, failed entrepreneur, and the husband to the resourceful and successful novelist Frances Trollope. The latter couple were, of course, parents to the famed Victorian Era novelist Anthony Trollope. [The family had harbored seemingly reasonable hopes that it would benefit financially from the connection to Penelope Meetkerke Trollope's brother (Adolphus Meetkerke), but such hopes were not realized.] The Indenture, housed in a modern cloth box with leather label, is in Fine condition and a piece of history beautiful to behold. A unique and important document and part of a defining event in the history of a famed literary family. A collection-distinguishing item for the Trollope collector.

Piatti in cartone azzurro. Frontespizi in rosso e in nero con piccoli fregi. Bellissimo esemplare. "It was so impartial that it pleased no one, not even Melanchthon" (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1911 Edition). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Testatine, iniziali e cul-de-lampe ornati e arabescati in rame. Spine, raised bands, gilt tooling, gilt title on red leather label, edges bumped and worn slightly, joint lightly worn. Internally, board edges with gilt tooling, dim remains of bookplate to fpd, some light offsetting, tiny stain to the edge of page 37, other than that, internally its in great condition, text block edges marbled, [4], [1], (ii-ix), [1], [1], 4-92 pp, 13 plates, small bookseller label to ep. A wonderful copy. (ESTC T76257. Lowndes 338. For a number of years he spent much time in London, Cambridge, and Oxford, teaching pupils the art of shorthand. They paid 5 guineas, and were sworn to secrecy, becoming members of what Byrom, again perhaps facetiously, called his Societas Tachygraphica (‘Speedwriting Society’ ). See ODNB.

Paris, Briasson, 1767. 3 volumes. 8vo (195 x 130mm). pp. xxxv, (1), 571; vi, 656; vi, 290, (6), 286, (1), with 30 (many folded) engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments, maroon title-labels, minor restoration to top and bottom of spines of two volumes, an attractive set. Don Pedro Francisco Davila (1713-85) was a Peruvian gentleman, who lived in Paris were he maintained a collection of natural history objects and works of art. "Several years later Davila had to return to Peru for family reasons and decided to sell his collections. He published a lavish, illustrated catalogue in three volumes, the first being chiefly devoted to shells, in the compilation of which he was assisted by the Abbé de Gua de Malves and J.B.L. Romé de l'Isle (who was largerly responsible for the second volume, which dealt with minerals). The Linnaean system is mentioned only in connection with the minerals. Surprisingly, Adanson, who clearly despised dilettante collectors was well acquainted with Davila's collections and contributed a flattering 'approval' to the first volume, expressing his regret that they were to be dismembered and urging some 'sovereign' to buy them in their entirety. In 1767 they were sold piecemeal, 1,007 shell items realizing 26,933 francs ..." (Dance pp. 60-61). 22 of the plates depict shells. The second volume by Jean Romé de l'Isle describes the mineral collection of Davila. "Of interest to the gemologist in this volume are Davila's collections of marbles, flints, jaspers, agates, other chalcedonic varieties of quartz, opals, jades, and precious stones ... Elsewhere are listed dendritic agates ... and amber" (Sinkankas 1594). Nissen ZBI, 1050; See also Wilson, The History of Mineral Collecting, p. 50.

I doveri dello stato coniugale. Canto

Giovanni Riccomini Lucca: Giovanni Riccomini, 1767. 8vo (203 x 135). 32 pp. Italic type (dedication in a large roman font). Engraved title vignette (cupid with garland seated on sea creature); two woodcut pictorial initials, head- and tail-pieces with putti and arabesques. Small marginal thumbprint to title, else fine; a pretty copy. Contemporary Dutch-gilt paper of a red floral pattern on gold ground, over thick paper wrappers, marbled edges; remains of paper shelf-mark label (lower cover); upper cover slightly faded. *** Only edition of a poem on marriage, with asides on the care of infants, by a Luccan abbot and prolific author of vers de circonstance. Dedicated to Maria Luisa Boccella (Mansi), a lady of Lucca for whose own marriage Leonardi had contributed epithalamia 27 years earlier, the poem was written to honor her daughter Isabella's engagement or marriage to one Girolamo Parensi. The couple were married that year (cf. Pinto 1416). In his flowery Arcadian verses Leonardi eulogizes the duties of a wife and mother. "Dependence and love" are the new wife's first duties toward her spouse (who is, however, advised to exercise his power gently), to which will soon be added that of vigilant care of the "feeble offspring" (debil Parto). On that subject Leonardi expresses clear opinions, decrying the use of wet nurses (l'uso insalubre / d'alimentar con mercenario latte / La Prole..., p. 24) and, in a long prose note, vigorously opposing swaddling. OCLC lists a single copy in America (U. Maryland). No further copies located; not in Pinto or ICCU.

komma at intagas. Stockholm, Carl Stolpe, 1767. 8:o. 78,+ (2, blanka) s. Fläckig, tryckfel vid ett veck s. 50. Skuren upptill, emellanåt hårt, annars oskuren. Sammanbunden med: (DÄHNERT, Johann Carl. Utg.) Greifswald, Hieronymus Johann Struck, 1758. 8:o. 95,+ (1) s. Enstaka fläckar. Skuren upptill annars oskuren. Senare marmorerat lila pappband, något blekt rygg med röd titeletikett. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Warmholtz 5956, not resp. 5721.

TIOMNADH NUADH SCOTTISH GAELIC NEW TESTAMENT (BIBLE)

Balfour, Auld, & Smellie, Edinburgh, 1767.. A scarce example of the editio princeps of the New Testament in the Gaelic of Scotland. Translator Rev. James Stuart of Killin, Perthshire. Scots Highlanders' first Bible in their own tongue (New Testament). Scottish Gaelic language. Translated from Greek into Scottish Gaelic for the very first time. With guidance on the reading of Gaelic. Before this date, many copies of the Irish Gaelic Scriptures had circulated amoung the Gaelic speaking population of Scotland. But it was not until 1767 that an edition of the New Testament in their own dialect was provided for the Highlanders. Contemporary plain, full leather binding with cracks to spine, light wear to exremities but still together. Title page torn and repaired with archival tissue. 4 leaves of the introduction (concerning reading Gaelic) are missing, but the entire text of the New Testament is present. Pages browned with staining (mostly light) throughout, some closed tears and marginal loss. Fore edges and endpapers have darkened. Though an imperfect copy, this is an interesting example which was clearly much read and still possesses its title page and all the New Testament text. Scarce collector's item. D&M 4080
