Gallaccini (1564-1641) was a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Sienna. Gallaccini's manuscript was completed about 1625, but was not published until 1767.       Balfour, Auld, & Smellie, Edinburgh, 1767.. A scarce example of the editio princeps of the New Testament in the Gaelic of Scotland. Translator Rev. James Stuart of Killin, Perthshire. Scots Highlanders' first Bible in their own tongue (New Testament). Scottish Gaelic language. Translated from Greek into Scottish Gaelic for the very first time. With guidance on the reading of Gaelic. Before this date, many copies of the Irish Gaelic Scriptures had circulated amoung the Gaelic speaking population of Scotland. But it was not until 1767 that an edition of the New Testament in their own dialect was provided for the Highlanders. Contemporary plain, full leather binding with cracks to spine, light wear to exremities but still together. Title page torn and repaired with archival tissue. 4 leaves of the introduction (concerning reading Gaelic) are missing, but the entire text of the New Testament is present. Pages browned with staining (mostly light) throughout, some closed tears and marginal loss. Fore edges and endpapers have darkened. Though an imperfect copy, this is an interesting example which was clearly much read and still possesses its title page and all the New Testament text. Scarce collector's item. D&M 4080

Some gilding and part of title-label on vol. one worn off. Internally a bit of soiling, but a good copy on good paper. Old owner's name on t-p. (M. Harboe). Woodcut title-pages and vignettes.. First edition of Lessing's first collection of "Lustspiele", containing the first printing of "Minna von Barnhelm".Lessing (1729-1781) is the most important literary writer of the Age of German Enlightenment; with him this period is fulfilled as well as overcome."Minna von Barnhelm" is one of Lessing's most important and successfull works and is considered one of the absolute best of his plays. "Es war die erste deutsche Dramatische Dichtung, welche nicht gemacht, sondern erlebt war." (Hettner, Geschichte der deutschen Literatur im 18. Jahrh., II: 310). Lessing himself wrote in a letter that should "Minna of Barnhelm" not turn out to be the very best of his plays, he would be very disappointed, and never have anything to do with the theatre again. " "Minna von Barnhelm" ist unbedingt die vollendeste dichterische Leistung Lessings." (Hettner, II: 310). Goethe also considered this work a masterpiece; he found it the most sincere thing to have come out of the Seven Years War and a work of immense importance and impact.       In-folio (cm. 39), pp. (4) con il frontespizio interamente illustratro, pp. clvi + (20) contenente un allegato titolato: Minuta dell'editto comune... Segue poi un secondo frontespizio: Mappa di esecuzione, nella quale sono delineati il fiume Tartaro e i suoi influenti sì veronesi, che mantoani. In fine 4 grandi tabelle ripiegate e 7 (di 8) carte geografiche. Solida ed elegante legatura ottocentesca in mezza pergamena con punte e piatti in carta marmorizzata. Dorso liscio con titoli in oro su tassello. Esemplare fresco e marginoso. Mancante della quarta carta geografica (numerata IV). Rara edizione originale di questo trattato che fu ristampato già nel 1776 e che i riporta i termini dell'accordo stabiliti a Mantova nel giugno del 1765 fra i rappresentanti dell'imperatrice d'Austria Maria Teresa e il doge di Venezia.

      In-8° (cm. 16,5), brossura marmorizzata coeva con antico rinforzo al dorso (titolo manoscritto); pp. XII, 116 in ottimo stato, qualche sobrio fregio xilografico. E' la prima traduzione italiana nell'edizione pirata contemporanea a quella di Berna (in realtà Lucca, 1767). "The translation is by Giuliano Merlini, the secretary of Giuseppe Pelli Bencivenni, the author of the notes" [Barucci Carpenter I, 344]. Questa fortunata versione dell'Essai del fisiocratico svizzero Jean Bertarnd (1708-1777), di famiglia ugonotta, divulgò in Italia la nota dottrina economica contraria al mercantilismo. Cfr. NBG V, 762. Ottimo esemplare.

      First Edition, with half-title, [16], 184pp, octavo, RARE UNUSUALLY LARGE COPY with generous margins, 185mm x 118mm, contemporary calf, raised bands with gilt rolls, hinges and spine extremities carefully restored, original leather label, London, Dodsley, 1767. Todd 5a. * Written before he was 19, Burke's scarce fifth publication, which, according to Todd (citing internal evidence) was published in "[what] would appear to be a rather small edition, possibly... limited to 500 copies..." With both pp.179 & 180 with section headings reading Sect. VI. * PROVENANCE: With the signatures of "D [?] Tench, 1800", "P.[?] Healey, 1828" and "Captn Healey 1865" on the title - possibly indicating ownership by the famous American Healy family. Captain Michael A. Healy, was born near Macon, Georgia in 1839. He was the fifth of ten children born to Michael Morris Healy, an Irish plantation owner, and his wife Mary Elisa Smith, a former slave. This family produced a number of distinguished individuals. Three brothers entered the priesthood; James became the first black bishop in North America, Patrick was president of Georgetown University, and Sherwood became an expert in canon law. Captain Michael Augustine Healy (1839 -1904) became an American captain in the United States Revenue Cutter Service. Nicknamed "Hell Roaring Mike", Capt Healy has been identified as the first man of African-American descent to command a ship of the United States government. * "Burke's book On the Sublime and the Beautiful.. might well be said to signalize the point at which aesthetic taste in England changed from the classical formalism of the earlier years of the eighteenth century to the romanticism of the later years. Burke attacked the rationalist, classicist notion that clarity is an essential quality in great art. He argued that the imagination, moreover, is most strongly affected by what is suggested or hinted at and not by what is plainly stated. Burke also maintained that fear plays a large part in our enjoyment of the sublime. Such fear is diminished by knowledge, but sharpened by veiled intimations. Obscurity, not clarity, is the property of the most powerfully moving art; and Burke added, 'It is our ignorance of things that causes all our admiration and chiefly excites our passions.' This highly influential work on aesthetics received instant acclaim: Dr Johnson called it 'an example of true criticism' and Hume 'a very pretty treatise'. Burke was the first philosopher to argue that the sublime and the beautiful are mutually exclusive. The imagination is moved to awe and instilled with a degree of horror by what is "dark, uncertain, and confused." He believed that "terror is in all cases whatsoever . . . the ruling principle of the sublime" and, in keeping with his conception of a violently emotional sublime, his idea of astonishment, the effect which almost all theorists mentioned, was more violent than that of his predecessors: "The passion caused by the great and sublime in nature . . . is Astonishment; and astonishment is that state of the soul, in which all its motions are suspended, with some degree of horror. In this case the mind is so entirely filled with its object, that it cannot entertain any other." In addition to the emphasis which he places on terror, Burke is important because he explained the opposition of beauty and sublimity by a physiological theory. He made the opposition of pleasure and pain the source of the two aesthetic categories, deriving beauty from pleasure and sublimity from pain. * "A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful, particularly its discussion of sublimity, is a founding document of Gothic aesthetics which had a huge impact on the "classical" Gothic and on all the genres which developed from it. The Enquiry (and the extensive aesthetic debate it engendered) helped provide a vocabulary - psychological as well as aesthetic and rhetorical - for writers interested in extending the late eighteenth-century's burgeoning interest in emotion and human psychology. By foregrounding the role and power of aesthetic concepts - and their psychological mechanisms and impact - such as the sublime and the picturesque, Burke's work influenced, directly or indirectly, writers such as Charlotte Smith and Ann Radcliffe, whose influence on the Gothic was immense. Woodcut vignette to title-page. With the ex-libris of the notes Danish book collector K.F. Plesner to inside of front board.. Rare first edition of this interesting, anonymously written continuation of Voltaire's Candide, which wraps up the adventures of the hero. "Turning his back on both Voltarian satire and scepticism, the novelist proposes a moralistic fable - the focal point of which is a rehabilitation of Leibniz's Theory of Optimism. The main body of the novel tells the story of Candide and his new wife, the noble Zénoïde, in their sumptuous Copenhagen townhouse. Before achieving this happy state, however, the couple endures various trials and tribulations reminiscent of the newly minted gothic genre. "Candide au Dannemarc" also features a satirical portrait of Jean-Jacques Rousseau." (Éduard M. Langille, from the introduction to the new edition of "Candide au Dannemarc", edited by him). Voltaire's "Candide" had inspired a sequel that appeared in 1760, which is attributed to Charles-Claude-Florent de Campigneulles, but which might be by Henri-Joseph du Laurens. The present work is a direct continuation of that sequel (although it ignores the happy ending of the previous work), but evidently from the preface, it is not written by the same author. It has still not been determined who the actual author is.The part on Rousseau (pp. 148-167) in the present work has become quite famous, portraying him satirically as trying to make a living in Copenhagen from copying music while plotting to escape to America. The novel ends with Candide leaving Denmark to be the Danish ambassador in Russia.A secoond edition appeared in 1769

His educational duties involved his introducing his pupil into the elements of the all-victorious natural science, with the result that his own interest was caught by the study of the living nature; from the year 1758 he began his researches, with the works of Linnaeus as his guide. Müller's second foreign journey took him through Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France and Holland, was of much greater importance to his scientific development.
