Thirty engraved plates (many folding). xxxv, [1], 571 pp.; vi, 656 pp.; vi, 290 pp., 3 p.l., 286, [1] pp. Three vols. 8vo, cont. mottled calf (foot of spine of Vol. III with a bit of wear), triple gilt fillet round sides, spines gilt, a.e.g., red morocco lettering pieces on spines. Paris: Briasson, 1767. First edition, and a very handsome set, of this lavish and detailed catalogue. "In 1767 Romé was employed, on Sage's recommendation, to draw up a catalogue of the curiosities that had been collected by Pedro Francisco Davila, who wished to sell his cabinet of natural history before returning to Peru. The work ran to three volumes, in the second of which Romé, in agreement with Linnaeus, stressed the importance of crystalline form in mineralogical description."-D.S.B., XI, p. 520. During Romé's early years, he found steady employment by preparing at least fourteen other mineralogical catalogues. Davila's enormous collection contained scientific instruments (26 items), medals, prints, sculpture, illuminated MSS., Oriental MSS., and books (402 lots) as well as natural history objects. In the Preface to Vol. I, Davila writes that he hopes to sell the collection en bloc but, if no person comes forward, the collection will be sold at auction beginning 12 November. The second part of the third volume is devoted to the classical bronzes and medals (catalogued by Abbé Grimaud) and the prints and drawings (catalogued by M. Remy). The present set is priced throughout in a contemporary hand; it is the first time I have seen a set so annotated. The prices furnish invaluable information regarding the market of the period. Fine set and very scarce on the market. This is a presentation copy from Davila, inscribed on the first title: "Pour Monsieur Hulin de la part de son tres humble et tres obeissant serviteur Davila." Wilson, The History of Mineral Collecting, p. 209-(erroneously calling for 7 plates only). .

London: Londres, 1767. 4to, 19p., 8.5x11 inches, unbound, stitched, untrimmed lightly soiled and worn pages, text in French, early notation in ink by a very neat hand concerning an earlier publication of a related book from 1765, also in French. OCLC lists one copy at the British Library though ESTC lists four. Publication of a letter by Charles-Geneviève-Louis-Auguste-André-Timothée d'Éon de Beaumont, known as Chevalier d'Eon, a French diplomat, spy, soldier and Freemason who lived the later years of his life as a woman. The matter of the letter is the charge by the Chevalier that Comte de Guerchy had attempted to assassinate the chevalier in an attempt to keep secret documents on spying in England from being released. This piece was written during d'Eon's political exile.& The chevalier posed as a Lady on a secret mission to Russia in order to gain close access to the Empress and became her Maid of Honour. Claiming to have been born anatomically female but raised as a male, he demanded to be recognized as a woman and the Court complied but insisted that he dress as a woman. With the aid of the King's money he too complied, revising his wardrobe appropriately. After his death it was proven he was anatomically male.& Havelock Ellis coined the term Eonism to give name to similar cases of transgenderism.& Several literary works have been based on d'Eon as well as a manga and animé series.& The Beaumont Society for transgendered people is named for him

An Essay on Crimes and Punishments, Translated from the Italian; with a Commentary, Attributed to Mons. De Voltaire, translated from the French

London: Printed for J. Almon, opposite Burlington-House, Piccadilly, 1767 First edition in English. . Contemporary calf, sides a little scuffed, rebacked, red morocco lettering piece. Octavo. A good, clean copy. "... One of the most influential books in the history of criminology ... Beccaria maintained that the gravity of the crime should be measured by its injury to society and that the penalties should be related to this. The prevention of crime he held to be of greater importance than its punishment, and the certainty of punishment of greater effect than its severity. He denounced the use of torture and secret judicial proceedings. He opposed capital punishment, which should be replaced by life imprisonment; crimes against property should be in the first place punished by fines, political crimes by banishment; and the conditions in prisons should be radically improved. Beccaria believed that the publication of criminal proceedings, verdicts and sentences, as well as furthering general education, would help to prevent crime. These ideas have now become so commonplace that it is difficult to appreciate their revolutionary impact at the time" "It was eventually translated into twenty-two languages. Its principles have been incorporated into the criminal practice of all civilized countries …The impact of Dei Delitti e delle Pene on the reform of criminal justice can hardly be exaggerated" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 209, describing the original Italian edition, Livorno, 1764).

Reliques of Ancient English Poetry

London,: J. Dodsley,, 1767.. Three volumes, octavo, engraved frontispiece and titles, two other textual engravings; an attractive set with contemporary ownership inscriptions, contemporary calf, spines banded and gilt, red morocco labels, two joints cracked and chipped at head of spines. Second edition, expanded, of this celebrated collection. Samuel Johnson is known to have encouraged Percy in his work, and even to have contributed material to the volumes.Percy's anthology invigorated interest in early English poetry, and was a benchmark of its kind, influencing any number of later poets including Wordsworth and Coleridge. Percy gathered most of the material in this work from the 'Percy Folio', now in the British Museum. Famously, Percy saved the manuscript when he found it 'being used by the Maids to light the Fire'. Its influence had an avowed impact on Coleridge and Wordsworth, amongst others.Lowndes, p. 1830.

Norimbergae, apud Gabrielem Nicolaum Raspe, 1767.. 1767, Latin text followed by French translation, edited by Nicolai Schwebelii. 4to, approximately 255 x 195 mm, 10 x 7¾ inches, in 2 parts with separate register and pagination, the second part, with its own title page, containing the French translation (by C. G. Bourdon de Sigrais). Engraved frontispiece to Latin book, engraved vignette to each title page, engraved pictorial headpiece to each of the 5 Latin books, 2 folding plates, pages: (28), 176, (12) - indexes and errata; xviii, 90, at the end of the preliminary pages before the first page of the Latin text is an unsigned leaf with the Elenchus or contents of the five books which is sometimes found erroneously at the end of the Latin book, obviously an afterthought missing from some copies. Otherwise our copy collates exactly to a copy in ICCU. A digitised copy on the European Cultural Heritage Online site has the Elenchus bound in the middle of the index despite a leaf printed in German directing the binder to place it before page 1. Bound in modern quarter morocco over marbled sides, all edges red, new marbled endpapers. Occasional light foxing, second title page age-browned, some pale age-browning and light foxing throughout, small pale damp stain to a few upper margins, name of Dr Georg Wolfgang Augustin Fikenscher with date of 1797 on title page, in old ink, a German academic from Bayreuth, binding tight and firm. A very good copy. Vegetius a Roman writer about whom very little is known wrote his classic work originally called Epitoma Rei Militaris in the fifth century. The material, on military matters, is chiefly borrowed from earlier authorities and Vegetius is the only extant source for much that his work contains. It was first published in Utrecht in 1475 and was frequently reprinted and translated into modern languages. The work is divided into 5 books: 1. On the levying and training of recruits; 2. On the legion, its organisation, rank of officers and men, and their arms; 3. On tactics, the last chapter of this book consisting of thirty-two maxims of war; 4. On fortification and the attack and defence of places; on machines of war; 5. On the navy. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. POSTAGE AT COST.

        Du 8 decembre, 1766.

Utan ort, 1767. Liten 8:o. 32, 49-56 s.

Ferguson (1710-1776) was the son of a Scottish tenant farmer and received little formal education. Colin Maclaurin discovered Ferguson's mechanical abilities and introduced him to Martin Folkes, who encouraged Ferguson to lecture to the Royal Society about his astronomical contrivances. A skilled designer of clocks and planispheres (as well as a 'solar eclipsareon'), he became an accomplished public speaker and expounder of Newtonian ideas, especially after the publication of his Astronomy Explained Upon Sir Isaac Newton's Principles (1756), which went through seventeen editions. This treasure contains a large folding plate of an orrery, a folding plate of a "magic square of squares" done by Benjamin Franklin, and a folding plate of a "magic circle of circles" done by Benjamin Franklin.         The Works of Jonathan Swift

68 - Dublin - J. Williams, 1767 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce set of works from satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer, poet and cleric, Jonathan Swift. Containing his poetry, miscellaneous works, essays, prose and letters. Edited with notes both historical and critical by J. Hawkesworth. Reissued from the nine volume edition published by G. and A. Ewing in 1758. Featuring an engraved title page to every volume. Swift is probably the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry. Swift originally published all of his works under pseudonyms such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, MB Drapier or anonymously. He is also known for being a master of two styles of satire: the Horatian and Juvenalian styles. Swift's first major prose work, A Tale of a Tub, demonstrates many of the themes and stylistic techniques he would employ in his later work. It is at once wildly playful and funny while being pointed and harshly critical of its targets. Swift was part of the inner circle of the Tory government, and often acted as mediator between Henry St John (Viscount Bolingbroke) the secretary of state for foreign affairs (171015) and Robert Harley (Earl of Oxford) lord treasurer and prime minister (171114). Swift recorded his experiences and thoughts during this difficult time in a long series of letters to Esther Johnson, later collected and published as The Journal to Stella. The animosity between the two Tory leaders eventually led to the dismissal of Harley in 1714. Fifteen volumes of the original seventeen containing Volume II, III, IV, V, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI. Condition: All volumes are uniformly bound in calf bindings. Externally, all volumes are rubbed, with wear to extremities. One spine is cracked and loss to thirteen spine labels. Five boards are detached but present, five joints are cracked andsix joints are starting. Internally, generally firmly bound, although failed in places to volume thirteen. Bright throughout, with the odd spot and some marginal tide marks that do not encroach on the text. Ink signature to the front pastedown of every volume, and armorial bookplate to the front pastedown of one volume..

Allix in Glanville Street, Rathbone Place,, London: 1767 - Written anonymously by Granville Sharp (1735 - 1813), classicist, author, musician and one of the earliest British campaigners against slavery. Sharp devised the plan to settle freed blacks in Sierra Leone, and is considered one of the founding fathers of the nation. Sharp was instrumental in assisting James Somersett, an American slave who came to England and escaped from his owner; Somersett's Case of 1772 was a victory for Sharp and Somersett in that it forced the Chief Justice of the King's Bench, Lord Mansfield, to acknowledge that English law did not in fact allow slavery and thus Somersett became a free man the moment he arrived in English territory. 8vo, (xviii), 30pp, 912), 9, 1 (errata).
