Paris: J. N. Bellin, 1766. Copper-engraved map, in very good condition apart from expert repairs to center fold. A fascinating map of the North Pacific shown just before the voyages of Cook, by Bellin, the esteemed French Royal hydrographer, present here in the first state This extremely interesting and finely engraved large map depicts the northern Pacific Ocean, and adjacent coasts during an early stage in its exploration, after the first wave of great Russian explorers but just before the momentous voyages of Captain James Cook. The map embraces a vast expanse from north of the 35th parallel, from Japan to California. The map shows the tracks of the Russian voyages of Bering and his deputy Aleksei Chirikov conducted from 1728-43 that first defined eastern Siberia and touched upon the American northwest. Save the imaginary bulge on the north coast of the Chuckchi Peninsula, the coasts of Siberia are extremely well-defined, attesting to Bering's enormous talent as a cartographer. Japan, whose rulers were known to be especially unwelcoming to foreign explorers, is not well understood, such that its large northernmost island, Hokkaido, does not appear at all on the map. It is perhaps Bellin's depiction of North America that is most intriguing. It shows how Bering and Chirikov touched on various points of the Aleutians and sighted Mount St. Elias, the 18,000 ft. peak located near the top of the Alaska panhandle. The Pacific northwest immediately south of that point is entirely conjectural noting apocryphal discoveries such as the 'River of the King's' encountered by the Spanish Admiral de Fuente in 1640, and the Strait of Juan De Fuca, discovered in 1592. Although the latter body of water does exist, it was probably first encountered by Europeans in the 1770s. Bellin does, however, note Sir Francis Drake's actual discovery of 'Nouvelle Albion' (northern California) in 1578. The map optimistically shows a land route across the continent to the Pacific, decades before any such endeavor was embarked upon. The mapping of the heart of North America is also most curious, as it shows the Red River system, which in reality flows towards Hudson's Bay, as being connected to the Mississippi Basin. The map is elegantly traversed by rhumb lines and the composition is completed by an exquisite rococo title cartouche. This map was part of the l'Hydrographie Française, a great sea atlas, published by Bellin in two volumes from 1755 to 1766. This was one of the finest works of the prolific Bellin, the "Hydrographer to the King", who was so highly regarded that the British (who were almost always at war with France) made him a member of their Royal Society. Soot to prelims and page ends. Early signature of John Spence to title page. Grolier, 100 English, 52. Printing and the Mind of Man 212. Rothschild 407 Blackstone's great work on the laws of England is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history. Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine. Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation. He takes a delight in describing and defending as the essence of the constitution the often anomalous complexities which had grown into the laws of England over the centuries. But he achieves the astonishing feat of communicating this delight, and this is due to a style which is itself always lucid and graceful. ? Printing In the Mind of Man). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Astronomical manuscript on the 1766 comet in Portuguese entitled: Dialogo epistolar astronomico sobre o cometa apparecido em Lamego as da Abril e observado aze o dia 9. dao anno de 1766

1766 - Folio (345 x 228 mm), ff [10] paginated [2] 15 [3, blank], ink on paper in a fine cursive script, drawing in ink pen and wash of the comet on the title; title a bit dust-soiled, otherwise fine, on uncut sheets in contemporary marbled boards. £5500A very learned unpublished Portuguese manuscript treatise on the 1766 comet (D/1766 G1 Helfenzrieder), which appeared in April of that year and was discovered on April 1 by Helfenzrieder, and independently by Messier, Cassini de Thury, and others. This treatise gives a detailed account of the observations made by the authors from their observatory set up on the mountain of Queimada near Lamego in Portugal. The authors also present a chronological catalogue of previous observations of comets from 1500 on, and cite numerous authors, including Apianus, Kepler, Gassendi, Cassini, Hevelius, Halley, Newton, Clairaut, and members of the Académie Royal des Sciences. The authors were pioneer climatologists as well as being accomplished astronomers. 'To the best of our knowledge, the earliest [meteorological] records undertaken in continental Portugal were carried out by Joao de Sousa Freire de Araujo Borges da Veiga (Veiga, hereafter) in Lamego, from 1770 until 1784. Lamego was an important and prosperous Episcopal city of the Douro valley, and was marked by economic productions: silk (the 16th-17th centuries) and Port wine (since the 18th century). There is scarce information concerning Veiga's life, although there are some facts worthy to be highlighted (Taborda et al, 2004). Although he was a correspondent member of the Lisboa Royal Academy of Science (elected in 1785), he began his meteorological observations in 1770, well before the LRAS foundation. His knowledge and interest in meteorological observations came most probably from his contacts with foreign colleagues. Furthermore, astronomy was also within Veiga's interests: he published a small booklet on astronomical observations in Salamanca (Nunes, 1997). The Lamego series consists of tables of annual values (extreme, average, totals) of temperature, precipitation and wind direction . Quantitative and qualitative information is included in the manuscript "Meteorological observations made in Lamego", that he offered to the LRAS (Veiga, 1784). Veiga's observations site and measurement methods are unknown' (M.J. Alcoforado et al, 'Early Portuguese meteorological measurements (18th century)', Climate of the Past, 8, pp 358-9 (2012)). The authors were also contributors to the Portuguese nautical ephemerides. The title bears the initials of the authors, who have signed and dated the manuscript in full at the end, and dedicated it to an unidentified noble recipient.

[MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT, SIGNED BY THOMAS LORD FAIRFAX, CONCERNING A RENTAL PROPERTY AGREEMENT IN VIRGINIA]

Frederick County, Va, 1766. Vellum, 8 x 14 1/4 inches, official seal present. Some soiling. Wear along folds, with minor loss of a few letters. Docketed on verso. About very good. An official document recording a contract to rent land to one Isaac Foster by Thomas Fairfax, the Sixth Lord Fairfax and proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia. In the document, Fairfax agrees to rent 326 acres of land in Frederick County to Isaac Foster, the boundaries of which are described therein. Fairfax retains rights to part of the natural resources of the land, including "a full third of all lead, copper, tin, coals, iron mine and iron ore that shall be found thereon." Thomas Lord Fairfax (1693-1781), a baron in the Scottish peerage, inherited a domain of over 5,000,000 acres through his Culpepper ancestors. His vast proprietorship in the Northern Neck of Virginia, which encompassed the areas between the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers and westward, had been managed by Robert "King" Carter, but when Fairfax learned how rich Carter had become on his death in 1732, he decided to move to Virginia and manage his estates himself. He soon became the richest man in Virginia. The ANB notes that "...in Frederick County Lord Fairfax worked at managing his farms, granting vacant land, and collecting quitrents from Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains. As lord of the manor he was magistrate in every county within the proprietorship and occasionally sat with their courts. He helped found the towns of Winchester and Alexandria and backed a Potomac River canal. During the Seven Years' War, he commanded Virginia's militia on the northern frontier. Since the Northern Neck encompassed only part of the Old Dominion's territory, his role in the colony's government was unofficial, but he exerted influence through discreet patronage of Northern Neck gentry." A very old man when the Revolution broke out, he was unmolested personally despite being a devout Loyalist. He died in 1781 at the age of 88. His estates, however, had been confiscated in 1779. His heirs received only a comparatively minor settlement from the British government. An interesting colonial document relating to lands in northern Virginia, typical of Fairfax's transactions as a proprietor.

- (24 ll.), xi, 286 pp., (22 ll.). Lacking a final blank leaf present in some copies. 4?, contemporary mottled sheep (some wear; small repair to rear cover), spine richly gilt with raised bands in six compartments, citron morocco lettering piece with short author and title gilt-lettered, text block edges speckled red. Internally clean and crisp, printed on high quality, thick paper. Overall in very good condition. ---- Second edition of what was written as a detailed discussion of dispensations regarding marriage issued by the pope and by bishops, but in fact served as the death-blow to Ultramontanism in Spain and Portugal. The first edition appeared in Lisbon, 1764; the third ("revista e emendada") at Lisbon, 1769. It was translated to Latin, Italian, French, German, and Spanish. An English translation was published in London, 1847, under the title @Tentativa theologica: episcopal rights and ultra-montane usurpations. Ultramontanism emphasizes the powers and prerogatives of the pope, even in secular matters. As such, it was an aspect of the struggle for power between the Church and increasingly powerful secular rulers. From the seventeenth century on, Ultramontanism was closely associated with the Jesuits, who (not coincidentally) were expelled from Portugal in 1759, five years before the first edition of this work appeared. After the expulsion, D. JosÈ I recalled his ambassador to Rome and expelled the papal nuncio: diplomatic relations between Portugal and Rome were not resumed until 1770. Also not coincidentally, the third and final Portuguese edition of the @Tentativa theologica appeared in 1769. The Proemio (pp. i-xi) reviews the reasons for Portugal's break with Rome, cites numerous historical justifications, and lists the immediate consequences, in terms of ecclesiastical matters that had to be taken over by Portuguese bishops when the Holy See could not be consulted. Leading among them were dispensations allowing nobles to marry despite a prohibited degree of consanguinity. The first license (final page) states rather ambiguously that the work can be printed, "vistas as licenÁas do Santo Officio, e Ordinario." Rather than the usual statements that there is nothing herein against the Church, the three other licenses simply say, "PÛde correr." The name "Carvalho" (i.e., Sebasti?o JosÈ de Carvalho e Melo, Conde de Oeiras, later MarquÍs de Pombal) appears after three of the four licenses.AntÛnio Pereira de Figueiredo (1725-1797) was an Oratorian priest interested in philological studies who also wrote a considerable number of didactic works on Latin and history. He moved between Enlightenment and theological thought as the political winds blew. After Portugal cut off relations with the Holy See, Figueiredo put himself at the service of the political-religious policy of the MarquÍs de Pombal. In 1768 he abandoned his order, which had fallen out of favor with Pombal, to take up a post as a deputy of the Real Mesa CensÛria. His translation of the Bible into Portuguese has been reprinted a number of times.---- InnocÍncio I, 228. NUC: DLC, MH.         THE NECESSITY OF REPEALING THE AMERICAN STAMP-ACT DEMONSTRATED: OR, A PROOF THAT GREAT-BRITAIN MUST BE INJURED BY THAT ACT. IN A LETTER TO A MEMBER OF THE BRITISH HOUSE OF COMMONS

London, 1766. Modern marbled paper wrappers, laid in. Very good. An important political pamphlet in which the author urges the overturning of the Stamp Act due to the increasingly bitter colonial response. Assuring his readers that the colonists bring no immediate threat of military force, "they are neither able nor desirous to contend with their mother country," he instead warns of the effects on British trade with the colonies. Because of the great expense, he argues, the colonists might either refuse or be unable to continue to support the trade and thusly bring about economic ruin. A British citizen who resided in the colonies for several years, the author cautions, on behalf of the Americans, "they will never consent to enrich us, while they think we oppress them; they will never treat us with the respect due to parent, while they think we treat them as slaves; nor will they carry on a friendly and profitable trade with us, while they think we treat them as aliens, and load them with chains." Adams notes the date of publication as 1765, though the titlepage reads 1766. The pamphlet was reprinted in Boston the next year.

Original Hand-Coloured Aquatint Engraving From] SIR WILLIAM HAMILTON'S Collection of Etruscan, Greek, and Roman Antiquities ]

Naples, 1766-1776. A single aquatint plate drawn and engraved after the original pieces in the Hamilton collection. An aquatint in terracotta on a black background with highlighting in light rose showing a man leading three children, they are all wearing laurels and bearing leaves for sacrifice.  As they approach the altar, two objects hover above, one of which is likely a basin or kylix the other resembles a stylized head of a horned animal. Printed on a single folio sheet measuring approximately 20" x 14", the image approximately 5.5" X 7.5"., Now presented in cream mounting boards 22" x18" behind clear mylar. A very fine plate in an excellent state of preservation. A BEAUTIFUL AND IMPRESSIVE PLATE FROM A MASTERPIECE OF CLASSIC ART RENDERINGS AND PUBLICATION. Hamilton served as British envoy to the court of Naples where he began collecting Greek vases and other antiquities immediately upon arriving at his post. In 1766?"67 he published a volume of engravings of his collection entitled A Collection of Etruscan, Greek, and Roman antiquities from the cabinet of the Honble. Wm. Hamilton. A further three volumes were produced in 1769?"76. Josiah Wedgwood the potter and porcelain maker drew great inspiration from the reproductions presented in Hamilton's volumes. While widely recognized for their beauty, the reproductions from Hamilton's vases have become evidence of the irreconcilable problem of neoclassicism in the Romantic period. Significant changes in the way the vases were engraved over a span of thirty or forty years demonstrate how an immutable collection of objects is subject to radical shifts in representation in response to the social and artistic styles of the time.

Elementa Entomologica. Cum CXXXV. Tabulae aere excusae floridisque coloribus distinctae. Einleitung in die Insectenkenntnis. CXXXV. ausgemahlte Kupfertafeln.

      - Regensburg, gedruckt mit Weissischen Schriften, 1766. 4to (298 x 235mm). With 135 beautifully hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, spine in 6 compartments, with black gilt lettered label and gilt lines (small skilful repair to spine). Rare first edition. A very fine uncut copy of this beautifully illustrated entomological work published during the Golden period of South German natural history book production. Jacob Schaeffer (sometimes spelled Schäffer) was a Bavarian clergyman-naturalist, a phenomenon so characteristic of the age of Enlightenment. His interest was broad and apart from publishing the most beautiful early iconography on fungi he published on birds, entomology and paper-making, however most of his works describe the fauna and flora of South Germany. Schaeffer had his own cabinet of curiosities, the Schaefferianum, which was visited by Goethe in 1786. The detailed and exact figures illustrate Schaeffer's system of classification, which was based on the wings and the number of tarsi. The fourth section 'Von den Werkzeugen der Behandlung und Sammlung der Insecten' is illustrated with 3 plates, 2 show entomological hunting material and how to preserve insects, the last plate shows a superb entomological baroque cabinet. The plates with the exception of three were printed on both sides of a leaf.Evenhuis. Litt. Tax. Diptorum 1766. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
