Lucca, nella Stamperia di Jacopo Giusti, 1766. In-16 gr.

Firma di possesso all'indice. Firpo, Beccaria, I,11)

        Laokoon.

Berlin: Voss, 1766. "Opened up a New Prospect in the Appreciation of Greek Literature" (Printing and the Mind of Man)Lessing, Gotthold Ephraim (1729-81). Laokoon: Oder über die Grenzen der Mahlerey und Poesie. Erster Theil (all published). 8vo. [8], 298pp. Berlin: Christian Friedrich Voss, 1766. 196 x 122 mm. Half sheep, gilt spine ca. 1766, light rubbing and edgewear. Minor foxing and toning, but very good. Former owners’ signatures on front endpaper and title. First Edition. The German philosopher and critic Gotthold Lessing was one of the most outstanding representatives of the Enlightenment era; “it was he, more than any other who laid the foundations of the intellectual primacy of German writers and thinkers in the nineteenth century” (Printing and the Mind of Man 213). His Laokoon, probably his best-known work, had an enormous influence on the development of art and literary criticism: "[Laokoon] takes its name from the famous statue discovered at Rome in the sixteenth century. It analyzes the differences between the sculptor’s treatment of Laocoon wrestling with the serpents and Virgil’s treatment of the same theme, and from there does on to discuss the limits and limitations of all the arts. It contains the first clear statement of the truth, which is now considered axiomatic, that every art is subject to limitations, and can achieve greatness only by a clear understanding of a self-restriction to its proper function. The most telling passages, and those which have borne most fruit, are those on poetry . . . [Lessing’s] exposition of the themes of Homer and Sophocles is especially effective, and he opened up a new prospect in the appreciation of Greek literature” (Printing and the Mind of Man).

Lettre de M. Deromé Delisle, a M. Bertrand. Sur les Polypes d'Eau-Douce.

[3]-57, [1] pp. Small 8vo, orig. marbled wrappers, uncut. Paris: Lacombe, 1766. First edition, and a precious copy annotated by Michel Adanson, of the great mineralogist's first book; it is very rare with WorldCat locating one copy in the U.S. "In 1766 he published his first work, dealing with the then fashionable topic of freshwater polyps. With making any observations, Romé set forth a hypothesis on the polyp. The work was a false start; Romé afterward confined himself to the study of mineralogy and chemistry."-D.S.B., XI, p. 520. Michel Adanson has made a series of notes in the margins of this copy as well as underlinings in the text; they are substantial comments and critiques of Romé's text. Adanson (1727-1806), a member of the Académie des Sciences and the Royal Society, performed important work in many areas of natural history. "Adanson played a hidden role in the development of science, for he was in touch with most of the learned people of Europe. He studied static electricity in the torpedo fish, the tourmaline, and various plants; agricultural problems concerning corn, wheat, barley, and fruits; microscopic animalcules; and the circulation of sap in lower plants. He also experimented on regeneration of the limbs and heads of frogs and snails...he was an important contributor to Buffon's Histoire naturelle générale."-D.S.B., I, p. 59. Romé (1736-90), by formulating the law of constancy of interfacial angles, established crystallography as the basis of mineralogy. Fine copy, preserved in a slipcase. Half-title lacking (but I think it is always lacking; it was not present in the other copy we have handled). .

The Oeconomical Table, an Attempt towards ascertaining and exhibiting the Source, Progress, and Employment of Riches,

London: for W. Owen,, 1766. With Explanations, by the Friend of Mankind, the celebrated Marquis de Mirabeau. Translated from the French. Octavo (201 x 125 mm). Contemporary tree sheep, flat spine very elaborately tooled gilt, red morocco label. Six folding tables. Engraved armorial Frankland bookplate to the front pastedown. Front joint cracked and rear joint cracking, but cords sound. Some surface worming to the covers; a very fine copy. First edition in English of Quesnay's Tableau économique, originally published in French in 1758, "a most remarkable analysis of the economic condition of his country" (Palgrave). The Tableau économique "is the most important and famous work of Physiocracy and has often been regarded as a summary of the entire corpus of Physiocratic economics... The Tableau has also been regarded as the analytical synthesis of the logical structure of Quesnay's economics, or at least as its most relevant aspect... The Tableau économique is one of those works in the history of economics which have often been regarded as an anticipation of modern theories. The Tableau has been considered a first rough presentation of Keynes's multiplier and as a sort of general equilibrium system of a Walrasian type... For others, the Tableau is an input-output table... Because of the Tableau, Quesnay has been regarded as an early econometrician. The Tableau has also been interpreted as the first classical system of price determination, thus anticipating Marx's reproduction schemes and Sraffa's price system." (Giovanni Vaggi in The New Palgrave). The anonymous translator dedicates the translation to the farmers of England, stating that it was "undertaken chiefly with a view of setting the superior use and advantages of agriculture to their country in a clear light, as the original was to prove the absolute necessity of it to France". A very fine copy of a work that is surprisingly scarce in commerce; this is the second copy we have handled in thirty years.

Poems, chiefly pastoral.

Printed for the author; and sold by J. Dodsley . J. Almon . W. Richardson and L. Urquhart . G. Robinson and J. Roberts . W. Nicoll . and T. Slack, in Newcastle., London 1766 - The Bradley Martin copy of the first edition, second issue (a reissue of the Newcastle edition of the same year, with a new titlepage). Dublin-born Cunningham intended to pursue a career as an actor in England, but turned to poetry in the 1760s and began gathering his works for a collective publication, encouraged by David Garrick.'His best efforts were in the poetry of landscape, and here he was influenced by current interests in the Gothic and the picturesque. In these respects Cunningham owes something to both the landscape poets and the graveyard school. His handling of rhyme and rhythm demonstrates his good ear, and in general his poetry, in reflecting popular taste, is clear and accessible' (Oxford DNB). 8vo (212 × 120 mm), pp. xvi, 240, plus engraved frontispiece by Isaac Taylor, subscribers' list; contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt panelled spine with floral tools and red morocco label, blue edges; lightly rubbed, both joints cracked but still tight; early engraved armorial bookplate of William Brodie of Brodie, later bookplate of H.         L'Art du Facteur d'Orgues

[Paris]: [L.F. Delatour], 1766. First Edition. Gregory-Bartlett I, p. 27. Cortot p. 18. Hirsch I, 54. Wolffheim I, 1124. RISM BVI p. 130. These impressive volumes were published as part of the "Description des arts et métiers." The plates, many of which are folding, are engraved by Gardete, Goussier and others, and depict organ design and construction in elaborate detail as well as illustrating a number of other keyboard instruments and a hurdy-gurdy; of particular note is the very large folding plate of an organ built by Gabler in 1750, with a fine view of the interior of the Abbey at Weingarthen. "Bédos de Celles is best known for his writings, particularly his L'art du facteur d'orgues. This work is among the earliest to describe in detail the design and physical construction of the pipe organ and provides a valuable description of classical French organ building. His extensive and highly detailed plates, charts and diagrams deal with aspects of organ design, mixture compositions, pipe scales, pipes and pipe making, and tools and their use. Working from the writings of Marie Dominique Joseph Engramelle, he gave exhaustive instructions on the transfer of musical scores to organ barrels for mechanical playing and provided two complete pieces in the form of pinning charts. This aspect of his work inspired the makers of mechanical organs from his time forward. Bédos de Celles also described a mechanism for a square piano combined with an organ, a claviorgan and a vielle organisée and included a detailed discussion of ornamentation, articulation and principles of organ registration." Guy Oldham and Arthur W.J.G. Ord-Hume in Grove Music Online. Frank Hubbard (1920-1976), the imporant American harpsichord maker, was a pioneer in the 20th century revival of historical methods of harpsichord building. After studying English literature at Harvard, Hubbard went to England in 1947 to learn the craft of building keyboard instruments constructed on historical principles. "[He] worked briefly at the Dolmetsch workshop before joining Hugh Gough at his London premises. He also studied early keyboard instruments in British and continental collections. On his return to the USA in 1949 he and [William] Dowd founded a workshop to build harpsichords on historical principles rather than in the modern fashion then practised by virtually all professional makers. Their firm produced models based on the surviving instruments made by the leading historical makers of Italy, Flanders, France and England." Howard Schott in Grove Music Online. An unusually good copy of this monumental work.. Four parts bound in one volume. Large folio (ca. 440 x 296 mm). Full contemporary mottled dark tan leather with raised bands on spine in decorative compartments gilt, mid-tan leather title labels gilt, marbled endpapers. Part I (1766): 1f. (title), 1f. ("Avertissement"), i-xxvi (Préface), xxvii-xxx ("Table des Chapitres"), xxxi-xxxii (Corrections & Additions... Avis au Relieur"), 142 pp. Part II (1770): 1f. (title), pp. [1]-4 (= pp. 143-146), 147-[475], [i] ("...Corrections & Additions...") pp. Part III [1770]: Pp. 477-536 Part IV (1778): 1f. (title), pp. [537]-646, 647-671 ("Table Alphabétique des Matieres et des Termes...), 672-676 ("Tables des Planches) + 137 large engraved plates, a number double-page or larger and/or folding. Provenance: The noted American harpsichord maker Frank Hubbard (purchased from the music antiquarian Otto Haas in London, invoice dated June 29, 1956). Binding quite worn, rubbed and bumped; hinges cracked but sound. Slightly worn, browned, and soiled throughout, more heavily to some plates, primarily to margins; larger plates with splits at folds repaired; occasional small ink stains; other minor defects. Lacking title to Part III (as in the Wolffheim copy). A very good, crisp, clean, wide-margined copy overall.

A 2-page letter written on both sides of one sheet and SIGNED by Webster declining an invitation "to the dinner intended to be given to Mr. Brown." (As Mr. Brown's "official duties of his public station abroad" is mentioned in the letter, it likely refers to James Brown (1766 - 1835), Louisiana lawyer, U.S. Senator, and Minister to France. The Monroe Doctrine was delivered to the French Government while he was minister.) In addition Webster lists the 11 members of the committee that the letter is addressed to at the end of the letter.

[13] ff., 202 pp., [2] ff., 29, [1 (errata)] pp., port.. 1766 In the 18th century Mexico saw a birth of great biographical writing focusing on important figures in its history, especially its ecclesiastical history. Vasco de Quiroga (1470–1565) was an imposing and perhaps quixotic figure during the early post-Conquest decades. A learned man, he arrived in Mexico in 1531 as one of the first four judges of the high court (i.e., oidores) and became the first bishop of the far western province of Michoacan. In that "out of the way" region of Mexico he devoted himself to establishing European culture, ensuring fair treatment of the indigenous population, creating towns and cities, and building the first utopian community in the New World. => Not the least of his accomplishments was the creation of two pueblo-hospitals for native Americans, and appended and integral to this biography are his "Reglas, y ordenanzas para el gobierno de los Hospitales de Santa Fé de México, y Michoacàn," which occupy the final 29 pages. Historians still consider this to be the definitive biography of Quiroga. The => engraved portrait of him, handsome and from the burin of José Morales, adds a face to the words of the biographer and to the account of the deeds of the biographee. Contemporary limp vellum with remnants of ties. Marca de fuego, unidentified, in upper edges of closed volume; very faint waterstaining visible here and there, most visible on five leaves at rear; generally a very good copy, clean and even crisp.

        La pharsale.

Paris: Chez Merlin 2 vols. I: 8vo (19.5 cm, 7.75"). Frontis., [1] f., lxxix, [1 (blank)] 304 pp., [1 (errata)] f.; 5 plates. II: 8vo (19.5 cm, 7.75"). [1] f., 315, [1] pp., [2] ff.; 5 plts.. 1766 Lucan's Pharsalia is an epic poem, the greatest in Latin after the Aeneid, on the subject of the civil war between Pompey and Caesar. Born in Córdoba, Spain, Lucan (A.D. 39–65) was the grandson of the elder Seneca, nephew of the younger Seneca, and the brother of the Gallio mentioned in Acts 18. He published the Pharsalia in A.D.. 62 or 63, but it seems likely that his poetic talent aroused the jealously of the vain Nero, as after its publication the emperor forbade him to write or even plead in the courts, and then later compelled him to commit suicide for alleged treason. The editio princeps of Lucan was printed in Rome by Sweynheym and Pannartz in 1469. The illustrated plates in this edition are after Gravelot, and the French translation is by M. Marmontel. Binding: Contemporary treed calf, spine gilt extra with badge of a thistle in compartments; red leather labels. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. Provenance: Small booklabel of William Salloch on rear pastedown. Binding as above, gilt somewhat dimmed; some chipping of leather to corners and spine tips, and endpapers rubbed. Internally generally clean, with some browning from turn-ins and a few spots of soiling. Bookplate on front pastedowns.
