Bishop Burnet's History of His Own Time. From the Restoration of K. Charles II. to the conclusion of the treaty of peace at Utrecht, in the reign of Queen Anne. To which is prefixed, a summary recapitulation of affairs in church and state, from King James I. to the Restoration in the year 1660. Together with the author's life, and some explanatory notes by the editor, his son, late one of the judges of his majesty's Court of Common Pleas. The whole revised and corrected by him. The third edition.

London: Printed for T. Davies, 1766 - 4 volumes, octavo (212 x 128 mm). Contemporary speckled sheep, richly gilt spines tooled with a repeated crescent-and-crescent-reversed motif interspersed with six-leaved flowers, red and green morocco twin labels, single line gilt border on sides, red speckled egdes. Short cracks to joints but all bindings sound, some scrapes to covers, a few gatherings in volume IV a little discoloured. A very good set. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Burnet by Simon François Ravenet after Sarah Hoadly. A lovely set in a very appealing period binding. First published in two volumes folio in 1724-34, Burnet's (1643–1715) History is one of the most important accounts of the period: "It engendered much excitement and clearly sold well in England, each volume going through a number of editions. In the following years several Dutch and French translations were published on the continent" (ODNB). Doctor Johnson considered it "very entertaining". Provenance: discreet book labels of Sir Robert Laurie (1764-1848), Admiral of the White, wounded fighting as a lieutenant at the Glorious First of June (1794); 20th century book plate of Robert Hayhurst, Lancashire retail chemist and bibliophile, a discriminating collector of 18th-century literature in well-preserved contemporary bindings. Lowndes II p. 320.

London. 1766. - [2],67pp. Half title. Modern three-quarter morocco and cloth boards, spine gilt lettered. A few small scuffmarks to spine, boards slightly rubbed. Light tanning, occasional faint foxing. A very good copy. A truly horrifying narrative by the captain of a ship engaged in the wine trade to Madeira out of New York in the late colonial period. Capt. Harrison picked up a cargo of wine and brandy in the fall of 1765, and while returning to New York lost most of his masts and sails in a series of storms. Supplies dwindled, and eventually the crew, maddened by drink, murdered a Black slave and ate him.         The Philosophy of History

London - L Allcock, 1766 Book. GOOD ONLY due to. Hardcover. A philosophical work by the prominent French Enlightenment author. Needs rebacking but a good copy with wide marginsVoltaire was a nom-de-plume of Francois-Marie Arouet. First thus, this is the first English translation of this work. With a bookplate for Hodgson's circulating library to the front pastedown. The French edition of this work was published in 1765 under the title 'La Philosophie de L'Histoire'. It was published under the pseudonym of L'Abbe Bazin in order to protect Voltaire from persecution. This copy has the page '44' numeration printed upside down and page '93' printed as '39. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally, rubbed. Loss to the front board due to rubbing. Further loss to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Crack down the centre of spine causing binding to split. Work is held together by one cord only and is at a risk of splitting entirely to two pieces. Front hinge is strained but firm. Subscription to Hodgson's circulating library plate to the front pastedown. Prior owner's inscription and possible shelf number label to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, binding is weak at pages 130-131 and held by one cord only due to the split in binding. It is probable that this will fail with further handling. Otherwise, the work is firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned, particularly to the edges. Occasional light scattered spots. Rear endpaper has been removed. Overall: GOOD ONLY due to binding..

John Jones (1700-1770), 'religious controversialist', possibly the author of the first two parts, is so identified by Daniel Whitten in cataloguing the Harvard copy. It is interesting to note the beginning of the Appendix (p. 70) which starts with the observation: 'Since the foregoing papers were sent to the press, some incidents have happened in our American colonies, which seem to render the sending them bishops at this juncture, an unseasonable experiment. There are disturbances among them upon account of the stamp duties; and we are told likewise in the public prints, that the project of sending bishops into those parts is an additional cause of their uneasiness; and no sooner was the first news received of the opposition made at Boston to the stamps, that it was concluded by all sober and sensible men, that the episcopizing project would be dropped'.

This much was obfuscation, though of an interesting kind, since the story was actually written by Horace Walpole, the aristocratic son of Sir Robert Walpole, the political superman of the early eighteenth century, and on his own account an antiquary, art historian and letter-writer. When the work was republished a year later it was still anonymous, but some initials to the accompanying sonnet gave away the author's identity. In the Preface to the second edition, in which the explanation 'A Gothic Story' is added to the title page, Walpole . . . explains the story as an attempt to blend the ancient style of romance, where 'all was imagination and improbability,' with the modern style in which 'nature is always intended to be […] copied with success.' . . . Overblown, outrageous, cheerfully unstable and in some ways silly as it is, Otranto was hugely innovative and influential, and remains an indispensable document in the history of the gothic and of proto-romantic literature." (The Literary Encyclopedia) "'The Castle of Otranto,' wrote Sir Walter Scott, 'is remarkable not only for the wild interest of the story, but as the first modern attempt to found a tale of amusing fiction upon the basis of the ancient romances of chivalry.' . . . Its influence on Poe is manifest, and it has survived in such novels as Bram Stoker's Dracula and in modern mystery stories and horror films."         THE MELANCHOLY NARRATIVE OF THE DISTRESSFUL VOYAGE AND MIRACULOUS DELIVERANCE OF CAPTAIN DAVID HARRISON, OF THE SLOOP PEGGY, OF NEW-YORK, ON HIS VOYAGE FROM FYAL, ONE OF THE WESTERN ISLANDS, TO NEW YORK

London, 1766. [2],67pp. Harrison, who took no part, describes the tragedy in detail, including the cooking methods (stewed in wine, then broiled). Lots had been drawn for the execution of a second member of the crew to serve as fodder when the ship, Susanna, in the Virginia trade, found the Peggy and saved her crew. In London, Harrison made statements about the affair for insurance purposes, printed here, and this fearsome account was published. A rare narrative. SABIN 30551.

Nuove osservazioni sopra i globetti rossi del sangue.

Lucca, Nella Stamperia di Jacopo Giusti, 1766, 8vo (cm. 13 x 19) legatura in cartoncino rustico moderno, pp. 45. Prima edizione. Heft Januar 1959. Titl. list cerveno-cierny s medirytinou znázornujúcou dolovanie a biblický citát. Za titl. chýba medirytinový frontispis s postavou Krista. Rizner I./130 s.

Roma 1766 - - PRIMO STATO DI TRE - Acquaforte e bulino, 1766, firmata in lastra . - THE FIRST STATE OF THREE - Etching with engraving, 1766, signed on plate. From the contemporary Roman Edition. A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "double encircled fleur de lys with letters CB", with margins, very good condition. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. The Calcografia Camerale, nowadays Calcografia Nazionale, has then bought the plates which are now kept inside the building. Hind 79, I/III; Focillon 781; Wilton Ely 212.
