Nuove osservazioni sopra i globetti rossi del sangue.

Lucca, Nella Stamperia di Jacopo Giusti, 1766, 8vo (cm. 13 x 19) legatura in cartoncino rustico moderno, pp. 45. Prima edizione. The Hague: Petrum van Cleef, 1766 A good to very good copy of the first edition of this extremely rare work by the naturalist Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811). This is one of his earliest works, drawing on collections in Dutch museums. It includes several vertebrates which were at that time unknown to science. Complete with 14 detailed and beautifully executed folding black and white plates drawn by the Dutch artist J J Bylaert, and decorative head and tailpieces. With title page with engraving of an owl, dedication, preface, text and corrigenda (244 pp), and folding plates. The binding is of worn but sound marbled boards with red label to spine (possibly contemporary or slightly later and possibly German/Dutch). All page edges red. Internally there is a little ink inscription to the bottom of the fep and occasional pencil annotation. The first plate has some creasing to the outer margin. There is a slight ink mark at the page edge of p219 which affects the edges of pages through to the first plate. Otherwise, apart from the very occasional spot, the contents are in remarkably good and clean condition.

Roma 1766 - - PRIMO STATO DI TRE - Acquaforte e bulino, 1766, firmata in lastra . - THE FIRST STATE OF THREE - Etching with engraving, 1766, signed on plate. From the contemporary Roman Edition. A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "double encircled fleur de lys with letters CB", with margins, very good condition. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. The Calcografia Camerale, nowadays Calcografia Nazionale, has then bought the plates which are now kept inside the building. Hind 79, I/III; Focillon 781; Wilton Ely 212.

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charl [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Wien, auf Kosten der Kraussichen Buchhandlung, 1766. Folio (355 x 240mm). pp. (20), cxxviii, (4), 200, (2), with engraved frontispiece and 33 engraved plates (Together with:) VALENTYN, F. Abhandlung von Schnecken, Muscheln und Seegewächsen, welche um Amboina und den umliegenden Inseln gefunden werden. Als ein Anhang zu Georg Eberhard Rumphs Amboinischen Raritätenkammer. Aus dem holländischen übersetzt… Wien, Auf Kosten der Kraussichen Buchhandlung, 1773. Folio. pp. viii, 148, with 16 engraved plates. Contemporary green morocco, spine with old skilful rebacking, gilt lines and gilt lettered label, sides with gilt border. The first Dutch edition of Rumphius' work was published in 1705. First and only German edition. A highly important work on tropical marine life, especially shells, of the Molucca Islands in the Indian Archipelage. "This is the first great natural history of tropical marine life. Remarkable for its detailed observations of living animals, habitats, and fisheries, as well as the accuracy of its morphological descriptions and classifications, the entire work reflects Rumphius's practical talents as engineer, merchant, and student of local cultures, as well as pioneer naturalist. Rumphius provides an invaluable window on the richness of tropical nature as it used to be" (From the backcover of Beekman's English translation). /Rumphius, called the 'Indian Pliny', spent most of his life in the employ of the Dutch East Indies Company and was stationed on the island of Ambon in eastern Indonesia. He wrote two major works, the present one, which is his most famous and his 'Herbarium Amboinense' a flora of Ambon. /"Nevertheless, even a cursory examination of the 'Amboinsche Rariteitkamer' reveals the outstanding talents of its originator, for the 'Amboinese Curiosity Cabinet', despite its unpromising title, is full of accurate and detailed observations on the invertebrate animals encountered by him and molluscs are given special attention. He was admirably situated for the study of natural history and his prolonged isolation from the cultural centre of the world enabled him to contemplate Nature with a mind free from dogma, superstition and the false values of a dilettante. First and foremost he was a brilliant field naturalist. He was a man with a remarkable gift for descriptions in which he pointed to just those details of a certain animal which distinguish it from its congeners.... As in nearly all pre-Linnaean works the nomenclature Rumphius employed is not consistently binominal but many of his names were so apt that Linnaeus made unashamed use of some of them..." (Dance, 'A History of Shell collecting' pp. 26-27).//Recent research has proved that most of the plates are after drawings by Maria Sybilla Merian. Following her return from Surinam Maria Sibylla Merian accepted a commission to do the illustrations for the 'Amboinsche Rariteitkamer'. She used shells held in various famous Dutch collections of the period. Her drawings for the 1705 edition of Rumphius' book are in the Archives of the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. Recently an English translation of the present work, with an excellent introduction by E.M. Beekman was published by Yale University Press./The second work by Valentyn is a supplement to the first work. Valentyn was an ecclesiastic in the service of the Dutch East India Company. //Nissen ZBI, 3519 & 4215; see also Beekman, 'The Ambonese Curiosity Cabinet', 1999; Wilson, 'The history of mineral collecting 1530-1799', p. 191; Wettengl (Ed.), 'Maria Sibylla Merian 1647-1717 Artist and Naturalist', cat. no. 161.

Zürich, bey Orell Gessner und Comp. 1762-1766. Goedeke IV/I,551,50. - Bürger: Aufklärung in Zürich 36. - Katalog Marbach. Weltliteratur S. 137ff.

VOYAGES ET DÉCOUVERTES FAITES PAR LES RUSSES LE LONG DES CÔTES DE LA MER GLACIALE & SUR L'OCÉAN ORIENTAL, TANT VERS LE JAPON QUE VERS L'AMÉRIQUE. ON Y A JOINT L'HISTOIRE DU FLEUVE AMUR ET DES PAYS ADJACENS...

Amsterdam, 1766. Two volumes. x,[2],388; iv,207,[24]pp., plus folding map and [3]pp. of ads. 12mo. Contemporary mottle calf, spines gilt, edges marbled. Corners and edges worn, hinges cracking but solid, spine chipping. Bookplates on front pastedowns. Light tanning, scattered light foxing. Map with some very faint dampstaining. Overall, very good. Gouverneur Morris' copy of the first French language edition of Müller's work on the Northeast Passage, originally published in 1758 as NACHRICHTEN VON SEEREISEN.... This work represents the best geographical knowledge of the time. "Contains the original account of Captain Behring's Polar Expedition, and discovery of the strait which bears his name, and the western limits of North America..." - Sabin. The attractive engraved map shows the Hudson and Baffin bays, and the eastern Russian coastline and northern regions of that continent. Morris was a key Founding Father, helping to draft the Constitution and authoring the preamble, and signing the document as a member of the Pennsylvania delegation to the Constitutional Convention. He was also an important political figure in New York, where his ideas led to the adoption of the grid system for New York City streets and to the construction of the Erie Canal. Morris served as the United States ambassador to France during the height of the French Revolution, and it is very likely he acquired this copy during the two years he spent in Paris. A very good copy, with an excellent association. TOURVILLE 3235. HILL 1201. HOWES M875, "aa." STREETER SALE 3462. LADA-MOCARSKI 17 (ref). SABIN 51286.
