        Essais d'analyse

"Wishing to introduce into the theory of differential equatons general concepts that would be capable of systematizing it, he prematurely outlined a philosophy of mathematical notions [...].He exhibited this intention in an even more dogmatic mannier in his Lettre à d'Alembert appendend to the Essais d'analyse of 1768, in which he affirmed that all transcendental functions could be constructed by means of a circle and hyperbola ; and he actually expressed himself in many of his mémoires as if any nonalgebraic function were of a trigonometric, logarithmic, or exponential nature."

Tagli a spruzzo rossi. Morazzoni, p. 255. Cfr. Bravetti / Granzotto, False date.

Binding pieno lucido vitello d'oro. Torna con i nervi decorati, ruote e testa coda. Parte del titolo e del numero del volume in marocco verde. Tripla mentoring netta sui piatti. Bordi rossi. Sfregamento Luce.

The plays of William Shakespeare, in eight volumes, with the corrections and illustrations of various commentators; to which are added notes by Sam. Johnson

London: J. & R. Tonson, 1765. First variorum edition of Shakespeare "and the foundation of hundreds of subsequent issues" (Jaggard); first Johnson edition, without the names of Longman and Corbet in the imprint, and with Johnson's Preface unpaginated; 8 volumes, 8vo, engraved portrait frontispiece of the bard in vol. 1 by George Virtue (after Droeshout, according to Fleeman; after Chandos according to Jaggard and Courtney & Smith), full contemporary calf neatly rebacked, black morocco labels on spines; very good. "By the time the edition appeared in 1765 Johnson had been working on it, on and off, for twenty years ... His most important preliminary work was the Dictionary. In the late 1740s Johnson read the complete works of Shakespeare in Warburton's 1747 edition, and marked out over 20,000 words, the meanings of which he found well illustrated in their Shakespearean contexts. Johnson says in the Preface to the Dictionary that he took 'the diction of common life' from Shakespeare; by arranging it and defining it, Johnson gave us, according to Bertrant Bronson, 'a diffused and unheralded [but] major work of Shakespearean scholarship'. The edition of Shakespeare is not merely a spin-off from the Dictionary, but it belongs to the same series of projects on the history of learning - some completed and some only planned - that runs throughout Johnson's life from the proposed edition of Poliziano and the translation of Paolo Sarpi, through the Harleian Catalogue and the Dictionary, to Shakespeare and the Lives of the Poets" (DeMaria, pp. 218-19). This edition includes the first printing of Shakespeare's will. Chapman & Hazen, pp. 146-7; Courtney & Smith, pp. 103-4; Fleeman 65.10SP/1; Jaggard, p. 501; Pforzheimer 911g.

1765. Acquaforte e bulino, 1765, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. "Etching with engraving, 1765, signed at lower right. From the Vedute di Roma. Example of the first state of three, form the contemporary Roman edition. A great impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with ""double encircled fleur de lys"" watermark, with full margins, very good condition. The whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. The Calcografia Camerale, nowadays Calcografia Nazionale, has then bought the plates which are now kept inside the building. The present works are all part of an album of the final edition, printed in Rome between 1770 and 1780. Magnificent works, printed on contemporary laid paper, with ""double circle and fleur - de - lis with letters CB"" watermark (if present), with full margins, in excellent condition. This example doesn't bear the usual central fold, with the string holes on the left." Roma Rome Hind 76, I/III. 700 445

Philadelphia: Printed by Henry Miller, 1765, 1765. First and only edition. Stoddard & Whitesell 176; Evans 9983; Sabin 27658. A fine, handsome copy, with generous margins.. 4to, recent period style rust-brown morocco by Philip Dusel, green morocco label, gilt decorations and lettering. Four-page list of subscribers. The collected works of Philadelphian Thomas Godfrey (1736-63), edited by fellow poet Nathaniel Evans. In addition to its importance in the history of American theater, Godfrey's Juvenile Poems is one of the earliest examples of an elaborate treatment of an American author and his works. It is, as well, a fine example of American printing of the period by John Henry Miller (1702-1782) of Philadelphia. Contemporary ink ownership signature of Geo. Campbell on the title-page, with what appear to be his ownership annotations in faded pencil above the title.

        Contes moraux

The constitution of the Loyal and Friendly Society of the Blue and Orange.

Manuscript* on paper, 4to., on 11 written-up pages, written in a calligraphic hand in red, blue and black inks, numerous blank leaves, the paper watermarked 'LVG', bound in contemporary calf, neatly rebacked and spine lettered gilt. In very good state of preservation The Loyal and Friendly Society of the Blew (Blue) and Orange was founded between 1733 and 1736 by officers of the King's Own Royal Regiment to commemorate the Revolution of 1688 and the accession of the House of Hanover. The Society is possibly the first Regimental Association relating to the King's Own. The Society had formal dinners four times each year, the last recorded meeting being in 1801. As well as celebrating the Revolution and the accession of the Hanoverians in 1714 (1st August), the Society also kept the anniversaries of the Battle of the Boyne (11th July) and the Battle of Culloden (16th April) where they sustained most of the government casualties. The present manuscript was prepared probably at the time when the Colonel of the Regiment was the Hon. Robert Brundenell, just a few years after the Regiment had distinguished itself at Guadeloupe (1759). The manuscript comprises: 1. Rules to be observ'd by the members of the Loyal & Friendly Society of the Blue and Orange. 2. Abstract of the Proceedings with regard to the form & ceremony of installing a person at his being admitted a member of the Loyal and Friendly Society of the Blue and Orange. 3. The Declaration (the oath made by the new member). 4. Minutes of meetings on various dates between November 1754 and February 1765. The final meeting recorded here, which took place on 21st February 1765, is of some particular interest. It records a meeting of the Society called to consider a request by Colonel Robert Melville, "Governor of the ceded islands in the West Indies" for a "deputation to enable him to appoint officers & constitute a Society in the West Indies, in order to admit members into the Loyal & Friendly Society of the Blue & Orange, the said Governor Melvill being himself a member". The request was duly granted, under certain conditions, by an unanimous vote. Robert Melville (1723-1809),was a distinguished army officer and colonial governor. It was in July 1763, after the Treaty of Paris, that he was appointed as the new Governor of the Ceded Islands (Grenada, the Grenadines, Tobago, Dominica and St. Vincent). His seven-year governorship was largely successful and he was promoted to Major-General in August 1766. He was a prominent freemason and an energetic supporter of the Scots Corporation in London as well as other Scottish charities. * Apparently written by a J. Barnard with his notation "J. Barnard 4th Regt. Fecit" at foot of third leaf. We are informed by the curator of the King's Own Royal Regiment museum at Lancaster (Mr. Peter Donnelly) that the only related documents in the possession of the museum are dated a little after 1801.

MR. JOHNSON'S PREFACE TO HIS EDITION OF SHAKESPEAR'S PLAYS

London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson et al., 1765. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION n. This is a well-preserved copy of the separate edition of Samuel Johnson's lauded "Preface" to "The Plays of William Shakespeare," complete with the half title. The "Preface" originally accompanied Johnson's eight-volume edition of Shakespeare (also published in 1765), a project that took the good doctor 20 years to complete, partly because of the scope of the undertaking and partly because of his own procrastination. Courtney & Smith notes that "Adam Smith is said to have called it 'the most manly piece of criticism that was ever published in any country.'" Indeed, the "Preface" seems to have been the most highly regarded and influential section of Johnson's entire corpus of work and gave "great impetus to Shakespearian study." It is quite likely that the "Preface" was one of the last sections Johnson delivered to the printer, as suggested by the presence of bracketed signatures in the original printing. That the editors saw fit to publish a separate edition of the "Preface" so close on the heels of "The Plays" speaks to the immediate popularity and acclaim it generated when first appearing as part of the larger work. The half title is not infrequently missing, a fact that in the present case is more than usually significant since it contains the price (one shilling), showing that the work was separately published. It is more than conceivable that the "M. Dawes" who signed the title page was the miscellaneous writer Manasseh Dawes (d. 1829), known in particular for his "Essay on Intellectual Liberty," published in 1780.. 218 x 130 mm. (8 1/4 x 5"). 2 p.l., v-lxxii pp. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. 20th century speckled calf with a simple gilt border by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (with their stamp-signature on the front turn-in), raised bands on spine, red morocco spine title label with gilt lettering, and gilt edges (joints expertly repaired). Flower vase ornament on the title page. Ownership signature of "M. Dawes" on the title page. Courtney & Smith, p. 107; Fleeman 65.10SP/2b; ESTC T-6255. Corners and edges somewhat rubbed, but covers very well preserved, marginal loss to the upper corner of leaf a2, lightly toned throughout, but otherwise a very clean and appealing copy.         Manuscript map, titled within the map:] The Road from Boston to Albany by way of Springfield and Great Barrington . [and] . by way of Northampton to Albany

      [New England 1765 - Pen-and-ink on laid paper, with the road coloured in sepia and with water elements in green, with a yellow wash border within the gradients, on 17 sheets. (Minor repairs, one small blank section in the upper border lacking). Provenance: Sir Francis Bernard, Colonial Governor of Massachusetts (1712-1779); by descent to Robert Spencer Bernard, Nether Winchendon House, Buckinghamshire, England. Among the earliest American road maps: an important large-scale survey accomplished for the Colonial Governor of Massachusetts in 1765. In November 1969, noted historian of cartography William P. Cumming discovered in the family home of Sir Francis Bernard "a collection of maps that, in purpose and type, differed so markedly from the more usual military, coastal and general colonial maps of the time that it stands out in both interest and importance. These were domestic maps, of a gentleman's estates and the roads to them . Probably Sir Francis's most important contribution to cartography was to have careful surveys made of the roads from Boston . westward to Albany, New York, on a one-inch to two-thirds-mile scale. It was along part of this Albany to Boston road that the American rebels dragged the heavy cannon captured at Fort Ticonderoga that, set up on Dorchester Heights, forced General Howe's evacuation of Boston in 1776 . No route maps as detailed as these, except for two short New Jersey road maps, are known for any other section of the eastern seaboard until those of Christopher Colles in 1789" (Cumming, p. 29-30). The present manuscript map depicts the road across Massachusetts, though does not extend as far as Albany. The road, divided into miles throughout, extends from Boston to Springfield, where it splits into two westward routes to Albany: the first a more southerly route via Great Barrington, Massachusetts, which ends on the present map at a point approximately 33 miles from Albany; and the more northerly route which is shown on the map as far as Northampton, just past the Connecticut River. The map is done on a very large scale of approximately 2/3 of a mile to the inch, with towns, rivers, mountains, residences, meetinghouses, and numerous taverns identified along the way. Cumming records this map (though as four separate entries [i.e. MP21-24, though with an incorrect sheet count]). Sir Francis Bernard became the Colonial Governor of Massachusetts in late 1759, shortly after British troops were victorious in the Battle of Quebec. That decisive French and Indian War victory opened a vast region for renewed English settlement and trade, thus necessitating the need for more accurate surveys of the roads. The present manuscript map was surveyed and drawn by talented military mapmaker Francis Miller in 1765 for Bernard, the details of which are recounted by Bernard in a 1766 letter to Lord Barrington: "I am desired to certify to your Lordship, that at the beginning of the Year 1764 Genl Gage at my Request, gave Leave to Ensign Francis Miller of the 45th regiment, then stationed in Newfoundland to come to Boston to assist me in some Works of Public Surveying, which I had undertaken in pursuance of resolutions of the general Assembly & partly by Orders from England. Mr Miller being then at an outpost & not easily relieved did not arrive at Boston till Nov in that Year, when the Season for actual Surveying was over. He was employed that Winter & Spring following in protracting the Surveys made that Summer, among which was a compleat Route from Fort Pownal on the River Penobscot to Quebec, & some other curious explorations of the Eastern parts of New England hitherto unknown to Englishmen: of which, elegant Maps drawn by Mr Miller have been transmitted to the Board of Trade. Early in the Last Summer I employed M' Miller (having previously informed Gen! Gage of the Intention) to make an actual Survey from Boston to Albany & back again by another Way being near 200 Miles; & afterwards from Boston to Penobscot being above 200 Miles;

Johnson’s great variorum edition of Shakespeare, which with his Dictionary won him universal fame and renown throughout Britain, is built primarily on the 1747 edition of Warburton, though it includes references to Pope and to other editors (including the "Oxford editor", Hanmer), along with Milton and Homer and a great variety of authors. It includes Shakespeare’s last will and testament, perhaps its earliest publication. It is the rock upon which countless –nearly all modern –editions are founded. His preface marks the induction of Shakespeare into the canon: "The Poet, of whose works I have undertaken the revision, may now begin to assume the dignity of an ancient, and claim the privilege of established fame and prescriptive veneration. He has long outlived his century, the term commonly fixed as the test of literary merit." (Vol. I, A2r; editor’s preface.) Although contem [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Lilio-Gladiolus bifolius¿ (Plate 39)

Nuremberg 1765 - 19" x 14" EHRET, Georg Dionysius. "Lilio-Gladiolus bifolius¿ (Plate 39)" Approximately 19 x 14 inches. From a selection of hand-colored plates from Plantae Selectae. Engraving. Nuremberg; ca. 1765. Born in Heidelberg in 1710, he originally worked as a gardener and practiced drawing in his spare time. Though constantly travelling, Ehret was able to accumulate a large group of friends as well as important benefactors. A Regensburg banker named Leskenkohl was one of these people who Ehret was in service of. It was during this period that Ehret met Dr. Christoph Trew. Trew was to remain a friend and patron of Ehret's throughout his life. Though these were not his only patrons. Ehret's list of benefactors include the most brilliant and generous amateurs of the day, the Margrave of Baden, the Duchess of Portland, Bernard de Jussieu in Paris, and both Sir Joseph Banks and Dr. Hans Sloan in London where he wound up settling. It is in England that he became the only foreigner to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Though he worked in a limited field, botanical illustration, Ehret was able to become a master. His engravings are some of the most sought after and important botanical prints in the world. It is no wonder that he became one of the foremost illustrators of botanical images of his time, at a time when it can be said that art of this nature was highly prized and passionately collected.
