Full calf antique style, spine gilt, leather label. Careful repairs, using archival tape, accomplished to old worming to most leaves; wormwork sometimes minimal and sometimes more extensive but never preventing reading. Quite a good copy.. Small 4to. Frontis., [2] ff., 48 pp. A remarkable book, demonstrating how small the world had already become in the 18th century. Mexico in 1765 seems an unlikely place for a discussion of Tibetan missions, but here is an elaborate report on the Capuchin missions in Tibet, published half way around the world in Mexico. It is possible that these reports came across the Pacific, or equally, that they came via Europe. In any case, a most exotic combination of topic and imprint.A special issue copy: Present here is an uncalled-for frontispiece. It is of four Capuchin martyrs, is => signed by the artist Navarro, is engraved on copper, and is printed au sanguine — the color reserved for => only the most special copies of 18th-century books. This frontispiece is not called for by Medina and is not present in any of the copies reported as held in the U.S.

This huge work of more than 1600 pages, the largest 18th-century published treatise on keyboard playing, was designed as a compendium of the musical knowledge that one might need to learn to play the keyboard. Volume one deals with basic keyboard skills such as note-reading, rhythm and fingering, volume two teaches the principles of thoroughbass, and volume three deals with improvisation."         THE PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, IN EIGHT VOLUMES, WITH THE CORRECTIONS AND ILLUSTRATIONS OF VARIOUS COMMENTATORS; TO WHICH ARE ADDED NOTES

London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson ...et al 1765. London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson ...[et al], 1765.. Eight volumes. Contemporary brown calf, raised bands, gilt labels, spines and boards ruled in gilt. Engraved portrait by Vertue in first volume, half-titles in volumes II-VIII. Upper joint of first volume cracking very slightly at crown and toe, short crack at crown of lower joint of the third volume, armorial bookplate in each volume of John Pollexfen Bastard (1756-1816) MP and Colonel of the Militia, and with his ownership signature in one volume, occasional modest foxing, otherwise an excellent set. Uncommon in this lovely, unsullied, contemporary state. Second edition, with T. Longman added to the imprint in the first two volumes. The first edition consisted of some one thousand sets, and according to Fleeman, these were distributed to subscribers ca. 10 October, and that this undisclosed second edition, consisting of some 750 sets, was already in press by that date. Official publication for the second edition was in the second week of November. The variations between the two are in the matter of the imprint variations in the first two volumes, the pagination of Johnson's Preface in the first volume, corrections of cancels, variations in press and signature marks, and the half-titles that appear in this edition. Parts of four volumes of the second edition were reprinted, and most, if not all, sets include a mix of the two printings. Courtney & Smith do not make a distinction between the two editions, identifying the 1768 edition as the Second. The best and most substantial of Johnson's editorial undertakings. Extra shipping charges. FLEEMAN 65.10sp/2A. COURTNEY & SMITH, pp.107-8. CHAPMAN & HAZEN, PP.146-7, JAGGARD 501.

THE PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, IN EIGHT VOLUMES, WITH THE CORRECTIONS AND ILLUSTRATIONS OF VARIOUS COMMENTATORS; TO WHICH ARE ADDED NOTES

French Manuscript Map of Northeast India

1765. THE MOST ACCURATE EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY MAP OF INDIA Watercolor and ink on paper: 42" x 66" c. 1765-1770 Provenance: French Dépôt des Cartes et Plans de la Marine. The mid-to-late 1700s witnessed a number of conflicts between the British and French over colonial holdings, and not just in North America. India, too, was a source of contention, as witnessed by this magnificent, large-scale manuscript map of present-day northeast India. This unique monument marks the end of French colonial aspirations in the region, and represents the most accurate manuscript map of India from the eighteenth century. The map extends from Delhi at the northwest to Patna and beyond in modern Bihar at the southeast. The backbone of the map is the Ganges River, which snakes from Delhi down past Agra, turns east at Allahabad and continues its southeastward course toward the Bay of Bengal. The map is the product of a French military cartographer, made in a period when the French were rapidly losing ground to the British in India. The Seven Years' War (1756-1763) resulted in the defeat of the French forces and limited French imperial ambitions. In 1757, the French were defeated at Calcutta and pushed out of Bengal. They soon suffered a similar fate in the south, where the British, after further advances, defeated them soundly at Wandiwash in 1760. French ambitions on Indian territories were effectively laid to rest with the Treaty of Paris in 1763, thereby eliminating a major source of economic competition for the British East India Company. Thus this map was made in the very years when the French were losing their hold on India. Such a map would have been kept in the strictest secrecy during this time when geographical knowledge was so closely intertwined with political domination. The foremost scholarly authority on maps of India, Susan Gole, has shared her insights and expertise on several matters relating to this "beautiful map," which she considers "a great advance on that of d'Anville of 1752 [considered the most accurate map to that date]." Gole estimates that it "was prepared about 1765-1770, either for use in the military struggle between the French and British in India, or by the Capuchins so they could know where to find safe haven and avoid the British." This map is not only remarkable for its aesthetics and history, but also for its geographic sophistication. Gole concludes simply that it "shows more up-to-date information than any other that I know of for the period." Not one of the standard reference books illustrates a map of comparable quality, from public or private collections anywhere in the world, for this time period. This is a map of national importance and oustanding aesthetic quality, worthy of any major art museum.. Book.

Physical and Meteorological Observations, Conjectures, and Suppositions, by Benjamin Franklin, LL. D. and F. R. S.,

First Edition, pp. 182-192, in the complete volume for 1765, vol 55, of The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vii, 344pp plus index, small quarto, a very good copy, bound in early 20th two-colour buckram, with 10 [of 11] fine extending copper engraved plates, London, [The Royal Society], 1765. * FRANKLIN EXPLAINS THE WEATHERSPOUT. * In Physical and Meteorological Observations: Conjectures and Suppositions likely compiled by Franklin in 1751 and forwarded to his friend Peter Collinson and later published in the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions, (1765), Franklin addressed the weather conditions which form large eddies or whirlings. "Thus these eddies may be whirlwinds at land, waterspouts at sea." He conjectured that these were formed by air ascending or descending that had attained a circular motion. The air within receded "from the middle of the circle by a centrifugal force, and leaving there a vacancy; if descending, greatest above, and lessening downwards; if ascending, greatest below, and lessening upwards; like a speaking trumpet standing its big end on the ground. When the air descends with violence in some places, it may rise with equal violence in others, and form both kinds of whirlwinds." He continued: "The air in its whirling motion receding every way from the centre or axis of the trumpet, leaves there a vacuum; which cannot be filled through the sides, the whirling air, as an arch, preventing; it must then press in at the open ends. …. The air entering, rises within, and carries up dust, leaves, and even heavier bodies that happen in its way, as the eddy, or whirl, passes over land. If it passes over water, the weight of the surrounding atmosphere forces up the water into the vacuity… A body of water so raised may be suddenly let fall, when the motion, &c. has not strength to support it, or the whirling arch is broken so as to let in the air; falling in the sea, it is harmless, unless ships happen under it. But if in the progressive motion of the whirl, it has moved from the sea, over the land, and there breaks, sudden, violent, and mischievous torrents are the consequences." * Bound with 35 further papers, FULL LIST SENT ON REQUEST. * Other papers include: DELAVAL (Edward) A Letter to the Right Honourable the Earl of Morton, President of the Royal Society. Containing Experiments and Observations on the Agreement between the Specific Gravities of the Several Metals, and Their Colours When United to Glass, as Well as Those of Their Other Proportions, pp.10-38; PARSONS (James) An Account of the White Negro Shewn before the Royal Society, pp.45-53; GALE (Benjamin) Historical Memoirs, Relating to the Practice of Inoculation for the Small Pox, in the British American Provinces, Particularly in New England, pp.193-204; EYLES STILES (F.         A Treatise on Ship-Building and Navigation. In Three Parts. Wherein the Theory, Practice and Application of all Instruments are Perspiciously Handled... to Which is Added an English Abridgement of Another Treatise... Lately Published at Paris by M. Duhamel

Lon.. b/w copper plate engravings, many double page and folding. Rare first edition of this English treatise on shipbuilding. The addition of Duhamel du Monceau’s work adds the latest in continental thinking. MacDonald calls it, “The most comprehensive and scholarly work on naval architecture in English until the publications of Steel at the end of the century.” - MacDonald 264. Scott, 270. This edition is much harder to find than the second edition, published in 1765. The 18 copperplates show a little tanning and offsetting, but are generally clean. The volvelle, plate XII, is complete and operational, with all its delicate parts intact. Quite unusual thus. Besides, where else are you going to find the word “perspiciously” in a title? Bound in old, rather worn, calf with later joint repair.

The Castle of Otranto, A Story. Translated by William Marshall, Gent. From the Original Italian of Onuphrio Muralto, Canon of the Church of St. Nicholas at Otranto.

London: Printed for Tho. Lownds, 1765.. First edition. Small 8vo. viii, 200 pp. Recent period style full speckled calf, spine with raised bands, double gilt rules and gilt decoration to compartments, gilt lettered red label, gilt tooling to edges of boards, near contemporary inscription to upper edge of title page reading "H Carr the gift of / Eleanora Swinburne" followed by another mark scribbled out by an old hand. The inscription in two hands, Eleonora's name presumably noting her ownership of the book and the first part recording its presentation. Small tears to inner margins of F7 and F8 expertly repaired, slight toning to first and last few leaves, otherwise in very good condition. As Hazen notes the novel was actually first published 24th December, 1764, though the title page bears the following year. Walpole, for fear of public ridicule, purportedly published the novel under the ruse of it being a translation of a much earlier Italian text. When its success became apparent he began to assert his authorship, writing to a contemporary within a few months of the publication: "a little story book, which I published some time ago, though not boldly with my own name; but it has succeeded so well, that I do not longer entirely keep the secret." Walpole writes in the preface to the second edition, that the work was an "attempt to blend the two kinds of romance: the ancient and the modern". In creating this fantastical historical tale, Walpole thus established the genre of the Gothic novel. Eleanora Swinburne was the daughter of Sir John Swinburne of Capheaton Hall, Northumberland, 3rd Baron Swinburne. The poet Algernon Charles Swinburne was the grandson of the 6th Baron. Coincidentally Hazen refers to a copy of the book sometime owned by Richard Bull rebound in red morocco which came up for sale at the Julia Swinburne sale at Sotheby's in June, 1894. Julia who Algernon Charles' aunt, died in 1893 aged 97. Hazen, 17.
