        Oeuvres philosophiques

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Collective second edition, more complete than that published in 1751 in Berlin, and additionally containing Anti-Seneca, art to enjoy, man more than machine (which constitutes Volume III).         Historical and Chronological Deduction of the Origin of Commerce

1764. First Edition . (ANDERSON, Adam). An Historical and Chronological Deduction of the Origin of Commerce, From the Earliest Accounts to the present Time. Containing An History of the great Commercial Interests of the British EmpireÂ… London: A. Millar, et al., 1764. Two volumes. Tall folio (10-1/2 by 17 inches), contemporary full brown calf rebacked with elaborately gilt-decorated spines laid down, burgundy morocco spine labels, raised bands. $8500.First edition of this important authoritative history of commerce, with a global authority that includes a focus on BritainÂ’s acquisition of “new American markets,” as well as the greater consequences of “the very extraordinary actions of the year 1720” when the South Sea Bubble burst (Sabin), complete with three large folding maps, handsome in contemporary calf.""The most comprehensive history of the earlier centuries of British overseas trade, Adam Anderson's Origin of Commerce was first published in the 1760s as the mercantile age was at its height. It was 'to the instrumentality of Commerce alone,' Anderson suggested, that 'the Britannic Empire is most peculiarly indebted for its Opulence and Grandeur"" (Ormrod, Rise of Commercial Empires, 1). Reflecting on Britain's economic ties to North America, Anderson shared a general feeling in the pre-revolutionary years ""that the colonies were to perform a dual role as producers of raw materials to be used by English manufacturers and as consumers of finished English products. This arrangement was seenÂ… as reciprocally advantageous to both England and America"" (Peskin, Manufacturing Revolution, 22). Praised by Adam Smith in Wealth of Nations (1776) as ""sober and judicious"" in his research, Anderson welcomed trade with the colonies and ""was delighted that Britain had acquired new American marketsÂ… He also congratulated the Americans on increasing their trade, 'perpetually increasing their useful productions, cultivating new plantations, and successfully attempting new materials for commerce.' He referred mainly to the raw materials produced by the southern coloniesÂ…. [as well as] New England lumber and food products of the mid-Atlantic coloniesÂ…. giving particular stress to those colonial products that might be useful to British manufacturing"" (Peskin, 22). In this ""monument of stupendous industry"" (DNB), Anderson's scope is global and yet specific, devoting a considerable portion to British colonial interests and offering a ""most accurate account of the South Sea Company and the very extraordinary actions of the year 1720"" when the Bubble burst (Sabin 1382). Within this impressive two-volume work are extensive references to treaties, parliamentary acts, the substantive contributions of economic texts, and thorough statistical accounts of currency, population and wealth. With large folding hemispheric map of the world and two other maps. Sabin 1382. Goldsmith 9939. Kress 6154. Palgrave I:39. Rare English Books on Banking 13. Infrequent scattered foxing, a bit of very minor marginal dampstaining to Volume II, marginal wormholing to Volume II appendix only, expert restoration to contemporary calf boards.

Index Librorum Prohibitorum sanctissimi Domini Nostri Benedicti XIV pontifici maximi (.). Editio postrema ceteris ornatior cum additamentis.

      - Romae, Ex Typographia Rev. Camerae Apostolicae, 1764. (Reusch, I, 878). Très bon exemplaire, dans sa première reliure de vélin.

An assessment and comparison of agriculture in England with 12 other countries. Efficient crop rotation was a matter of prime concern during this period of intense change in farming methods, and there was urgent emphasis on improving fodder crops.         L'Eleve de la Nature.

Paris: Panckouke, 1764. Two volumes in one, duodecimo, in modern boards, red morocco label. Second edition of Beaurieu's most successful work: a Robinsonade and educational novel describing a return to nature.Beaurieu (1728-1795) was a celebrated figure in eighteenth century Paris, known as much for his flamboyant and bizarre dress as for his writings. This novel is modelled closely on Rousseau's Emile (1762), so much so that some later editions were attributed to Rousseau himself. Rousseau had argued for a less authoritarian model of education, and one in which the student learns from 'nature and not from men.' Beaurieu's romance, like Emile, shows a fascination with Robinson Crusoe and takes his capacity to adapt through adversity and to learn from nature as a model for a new pedagogy. Thus, the novel strongly condemns the artificiality of luxury and slavery, and supports a return to agriculture as the basis for an apparently utopian society.Very popular at the time of its publication - Gove lists seventeen editions and translations before 1800 - later critical attention has perhaps not been quite so positive. Gove says acidly 'it was once foisted upon Rousseau'; the Nouvelle Biographie Générale is a little more composed: 'le cadre en est ingénieux, mais il n'est pas toujours bien rempli'. A very good copy.

Leiden: Theodore Haak, 1764. Octavo, completely uncut, modern half calf. First edition: an important treatise on the diseases of sailors and their cure. Rouppe, naval physician and surgeon, had travelled widely in the West Indies aboard the Dutch ship Princesse Carolina, and he based much of this work on observations made during these voyages. He offers a detailed account of the symptoms and treatment of many of the illnesses which were common amongst sailors, including an extended section on the vexed and topical question of scurvy, which would be addressed by Cook in his famous 1776 paper to the Royal Society. Rouppe's work also addresses the sometimes delicate issue of maintaining the health of sailors whilst they are subject to local temptations during stays in port. The book's importance was reflected in its 1772 translation into English. This copy was once in the famous Wellcome Library, and has their ownership and release stamps. Page edges rather dust-soiled, old library stamp and release stamp on verso of title-page.

Viaggi di Enrico Wanton alle Terre Incognite Australi, ed ai Regni delle Scimie, e de' Cinocefali...

"Berna" [Venice]: 1764. Four volumes, small octavo, with an engraved frontispiece and 33 plates; a most attractive set in early paper boards, speckled spines with ochre labels picked out in gilt, signed "G.T." at base of spines. A wonderful imaginary voyage to Australia: second, greatly extended edition, the first to include the map. The work is famous for its striking suite of engravings, which are evidently modelled on Venetian scenery; it is 'exceedingly rare and very seldom catalogued, any edition is worth adding to a collection' (Davidson). This is the 1764 "Berna" (actually Venice) edition of Seriman's extraordinary satire, notable as the first to include Seriman's continuation to the land of the Dogs, the first to include a portrait of the hero "Enricus Wanton" and, perhaps most significantly, the first to include a map (making it one of only a handful of imaginary voyages to Australia which actually chart the countryside and prominent cities of the land).Seriman (1708-84) was a Venetian from an influential Armenian merchant family. Although little information has surfaced about his life, he wrote several books, of which this is the most startlingly original. Purporting to be a translation from the English (in fact no English version has ever appeared), this work describes how Wanton escapes the dull confines of England and discovers the Southern Land after a shipwreck. Enrico and his fellow traveller Roberto venture inland and discover a highly refined society of monkeys, with all the accoutrements of European civilization. Our heroes quickly come to favour, eventually becoming Ministers of the Realm, over-indulging in coffee-houses, balls, and regular trips to the theatre. The chronicle of their excesses is beautifully realized in the suite of engravings which accompany the text. The book was first published in Venice in 1749 as a two-volume voyage to the land of the Apes, with twenty-four plates by the Swiss artist Giorgio Fossati. A little bumped.

The Elements of Navigation; containing the Theory and Practice. With all the necessary Tables. To which is added, A Treatise of Marine Fortification.

London: J. Nourse, 1764. Two volumes, large octavo, 11 folding plates and five folding maps (two celestial), many diagrams and engraved headpieces; an attractive set in contemporary sprinkled calf; spines numbered but unlettered. A fine set of the rare second edition of the standard textbook on navigation for the eighteenth-century British navy. First published in 1754, Robertson's Elements of Navigation was considered important enough that it was updated and republished every decade or so, meaning that it was used and studied by everyone from Carteret to Matthew Flinders, and undoubtedly by Cook as well. Notably the fourth edition of 1780 was revised by William Wales, astronomer and member of Captain Cook's second voyage. Robertson had a long and important career, and was involved in many practical and theoretical developments in navigation and mapping. In 1747 he was appointed assistant to James Hodgson at the Royal Mathematical School at Christ's Hospital in the City of London, and two decades later was appointed clerk and librarian to the Royal Society. He was also involved in trialling Harrison's chronometers. Most of the engravings are by the famous London engraver Thomas Jefferys, who produced many important 18th-century maps. The double-globe map of the world is by Basire, perhaps better known for his portrait of Captain Cook. Basire's map shows tropical currents and winds, and depicts Terra Australis/New Holland in the years before Cook's first voyage. (Torres Strait is not shown, as it was not known in the English tradition until 1769). This edition was improved by the addition of an excellent dissertation on the rise and progress of modern navigation by Dr James Wilson.Perhaps attesting to this particular edition's use and importance, this is a surprisingly scarce work: when Helen Wallis edited the journals of Carteret she had to resort to using the later third edition, rather than the second which actually travelled with Carteret, as the second 'is rare and no copy is in the national collections in Great Britain' (Helen Wallis, Carteret's Voyage, vol. I, p. 144). A copy of this edition is now listed at Cambridge. This attractive copy was once in the library at Westport House, with the library bookplate in each volume. The house had several interesting connections with the sea: the Browne family were direct descendants of the 16th century Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley. The first Marchioness of Sligo (as the Brownes were ennobled) was the daughter of Earl Howe, Admiral of the Fleet, the important figure involved in planning of the First Fleet and for whom numerous Australian places are named; on the other hand the second Marquess, Peter Howe, spent four months in gaol for bribing British seamen in time of war, to bring his ship, full of antiquities from Greece to Westport. Hinges worn but strong.

Back third and fifth volumes having to work. Galleries to not affecting the text in the second, third and last volume. The house of Montmorency was one of the most prestigious families of the French nobility and gave France several constables whose most illustrious Prince of the Renaissance: Anne de Montmorency. The five volumes are as follows: The first volume is dedicated to the genealogy and chronology of Montmorency from 960 until 1531, shortly before Anne became Constable, that is to say, the more fault function after King . The second volume contains the life and the Anne Francis, Marshal of France from 1494 until 1579 third volume is occupied by several biographies, Henry Constable of France.; Charles Duke of Amville, grand admiral of France; & That of Henry II, Duke of Montmorency, from 1547 until 1632. Fourth and fifth volume contains the life of François-Henri de Montmorency, Marshal Duke of Luxembourg from 1628 until 1695. This is the first volume we find the general history of Montmorency, including the Middle Ages where Montmorency toiled with brilliance, but Desormeaux's work does not purport to be exhaustive, it has made choices, including biographical; However, the work of a high quality is undoubtedly the best that has been devoted to this illustrious family that blends so well with that of France; thus tells this anecdote that when in 1764 the Duchess of Montmorency presented the work of Louis XV Desormeaux, asking: "Her Majesty she knows the history of the house of Montmorency? "The King replied:" Madam, I know the history of France. " --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
