Album of 18th Century miniature portraits of the Austrian Nobility].

      - A historically important an exquisitely rendered 18th Century collection of miniature portraits of members of the Austrian nobility, attributed to Karl Alexander von Schell, in the manner of Jean-Étienne Liotard. Manuscript portrait album, with 78 drawings (pen and ink and watercolour) on 66 sheets of paper and parchment, 2 volumes, bound in contemporary dark calf, each 16 x 22.5 cm. Condition: Overall very good; some portraits trimmed and mounted (without loss to artwork), probably by the author; some drawings with minor staining, otherwise in good clean condition; some leaves loose; fly leaves of volumes slightly stained; one list at the back of one volume with small worm holes; paper leaves bearing watermark of C.I. Honig, bindings rubbed at extremities. Presented here are two albums containing 78 miniature portraits, generally of members of the Austrian nobility, executed roughly between 1763 and 1775 in Vienna and Trieste. The portraits, drafted on both paper and parchment, are of exceptional artistic merit, in line with the style for the genre introduced to the Habsburg Court by Jean-Étienne Liotard. While unsigned, strong evidence leads to the attribution of the portraits to Karl Alexander Schell, a Swabian nobleman who was a highly gifted artist and who inhabited the same rarified social circles as the subjects of the portraits. The portraits are by the hand of a highly virtuous painter, as the precise lines of the draftsmanship are softened by the elegant use of watercolor accents. The visages are made to come to life, framed by the elegant coiffure, clothing and jewelry favoured by the contemporary elite of the Habsburg Empire. Some of the portraits of the female figures are drafted on parchment, giving the subjects a wonderfully luminous appearance. The portraits depict many influential figures in the Austrian Empire during the mid to late 18th Century, including many members of the higher nobility in Vienna and Trieste, most of them well recorded in novels and histories regarding the period. Also featured are Habsburg government officials, foreign diplomats and senior members of the clergy. A list at the end of each volume identifies the subjects portrayed. The album includes portraits of the members of eminent noble families, such as Lantieri, Zinzendorf, Herberstein, Kollonitsch, Harrach and Khevenhüller, amongst many others. Highlights include the portrayal of Anton Franz de Paula Graf Lamberg-Sprinzenstein, a well-known art collector and the director of the Imperial and Royal Unified Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Johanna Katharina von Zois, was the mother of the celebrated natural scientist Sigmund Zois.Michel de Pinet was a Consul of France in Trieste and an art collector, as well as a friend and colleague of the archeologist Ésprit-Marie Cousinéry.Maria Anna von Posch, together with her husband, the scientist Franz Anton Mesmer, was one of the earliest patrons of the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Some of the subjects in the album, such as Emanuel Anton, Count von Torres and the playwright Pietro Chiari, belonged to the circle of Giacomo Casnanova, as did the countess Maria Aloysia Lantieri. Casanova met Lantieri in 1773 and wrote about her as beeing "as beautiful as a star; she inspired me with a passion that would have made me unhappy if I had not had strength enough to wrap my love with the veil of the greatest reverence." Lantieri also befriended Johann Ludwig von Goethe, who mentioned her in his account of his Italian travels. The portraits within the albums can be dated to approximately between 1763 and 1775, during the height of the glorious reign of Empress Maria Theresa. Three of the portraits are dated and all of the miniatures seem to have been drafted in either Trieste or Vienna. The volume that is bound in contemporary brown leather predates the volume bound in dark, almost black leather, and seems to generally feature portraits that were executed in Trieste. Most of the portraits in the latter

Antique half calf and marbled boards. Very good. First English language edition of one of the most useful contemporary authorities on French Louisiana, based on the author's sixteen-year residence there. Jefferson owned a copy of this London edition, and instructed Lewis and Clark to take a copy on their expedition (Lewis borrowed Benjamin Smith Barton's single-volume second London edition of 1774). Of special interest is a short account of Louis de St. Denis' expedition to New Mexico in 1715.         A History Of The Military Transactions Of The British Nation In Indostan, From The Year MDCCXLV. To Which Is Prefixed A Dissertation On The Establishments Made By Mahomedan Conquerors In Indostan.

London: Printed for John Nourse, 1763-78. - 2 Volumes in 3. 4to. pp. 2 p.l., 415, [1]errata & directions to binder; 1 p.l., 365; 1 p.l., [367]-739, [3]errata & directions to binder. 32 engraved maps & plans (25 folding) & 4 folding engraved plates. A fine set in contemporary calf, rebacked preserving spine labels. First Edition. A work of enormous detail based on Orme’s years with the East India Company as writer, historiographer and member of the Council of Madras, and still essential today for the depth of its account of the Indian campaigns. The son of a British East India Company physician and surgeon, Orme himself entered the service of the Company in 1743 at the age of fifteen, five years later rising to the position of Factor. As a member of the Madras Council from 1755 to 1758 he played a vigorous part in crushing the French power in the Deccan, and was largely responsible for the appointment of Lord Clive to command the retaking of Calcutta against Suraj-ud-Dowlah. Retiring for health reasons, Orme returned to England in 1759 and began work on his history, the publication of the first volume of which earned him the position of historiographer to the Company. Macauley praises Orme in his essay on Clive as "inferior to no English historian in style and power of painting." Cox I 297. [Attributes: First Edition]

Histoire d'Angleterre contenant la maison de Plantagenet ; contenant la ma

à Amsterdam: S.n., 1763. Fine. S.n., à Amsterdam 1763-1766-1769, in-12 (9,5x17cm), 18 volumes reliés. - New edition, and probably the first in-4 that brings together three stories published between 1760 and 1765.Traduction Ms. Belot, described by the author himself. Full sheepskin marbled time. Back to nerves decorated with nets. Piece blue morocco title and volume number of brown morocco. Scuffs in caps tail of six volumes. Some gaps on the boards, due to galleries and to the last nerve of Volume I. Border lower flat bare half a cm. Good copy, however, very fresh. The History of England is undoubtedly the most popular work and was a great success of the philosopher David Hume, the father of philosophical empiricism and its importance in the history of philosophy is the measure of Descartes France. The story could not but interest the philosopher effect since it is an unparalleled amount of experience, as such, it is a must for those seeking knowledge; the historian is an empiricist, since can not simply perceive the causal links between facts and events, it is constrained in its vision to design a movement. However, for Hume, there is no way to conceptualize the history and structure typically follows the chronology of events, it is a story provided detailed and England, which extends from the arrival of the Romans in Revolution of 1688; it is divided into three historic and dynastic contemporary: the house of Plantagenet, the Stuarts and the Tudors. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

An essay in two parts, the first shewing when, and by whom letters were invented : the formation of the alphabets of various nations : their manner of writing, on what materials, and with what instruments men have written in different ages to the present time : wherein is considered the great utility of this art with regard to mankind : the second part consists of a compendious account of the most celebrated English penmen, with the titles and characters of the books they have published both from the rolling and letter press : interspersed with many interesting particulars by way of notes throughout the first part : and the second is a new species of biography never attempted before in English : the whole

The North Briton. To which is added, by Way of Appendix, the Letters which passed between the Rt. Hon. Earl of Talbot, &c. and John Wilkes, Esq; previous to their Duel. Together with all the Papers relative to the Confinement and Enlargement of Mr. Wilkes. With many other curious Particulars. Vol. I [-III].

vols. i & ii Dublin: Printed by J. Potts vol. iii London: Printed by especial appointment for E. Sumpter. And Dublin: Re-printed and sold by the Booksellers 1763 - 3 vols., pp. [i], 195; [i], 173, 33, [1, ads]; [i], 195, 12mo, contemporary calf backed marbled boards, red lettering pieces, numbered in gilt direct, very good. A very pretty set. ESTC has three entries for Dublin 1763 editions, one for the first 2 vols., another for the third vol. alone, and another entry for the second edition (all three vols., T181842), this last noting that in the third volume the imprint reads: 'Lnodon [sic]: printed by especial appointment for E. Sumpter' &c. In this edition 'London' vs. 'Lnodon' is a variant, and is here spelt correctly. The North Briton was 'founded on 5 June 1762 to attack the new ministry of George III's Scottish favourite, Lord Bute . When Bute resigned on 8 April 1763 he was succeeded as prime minister by George Grenville, who had broken with Pitt and Temple in 1761. Wilkes momentarily held his fire, but when Grenville ended the parliamentary session by a king's speech commending the peace, North Briton no. 45 on 23 April denounced the "ministerial effrontery" of obliging George III "to give the sanction of his sacred name" to such "odious" measures and "unjustifiable" declarations. Immediate prosecution of the paper for seditious libel ensued' (ODNB). (ESTC T195003 & N19482)
