(Charlevoix's) Letters to the Dutchess of Lesdiguieres Giving an Account of Voyages to Canada

London: R. Goadby, and Sold by R. Baldwin in Pater Noster-Row, 1763. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. 8vo, 7 3/4" X 4 3/4", xiv] +2 +384 pages; contemporary calf covers.& Rebacked with new leather spine and red leather label with gilt type. Complete with Errata leaf, which follows Table of Contents. Does not contain the map, of which most historians agree "map generally missing and probably not inserted in all copies". & Overall condition is near fine.& Another translation of Father Charlevoix's letters, in two volumes, which first appeared in English in 1761 as Journal of a Voyage to North America and one other and A Voyage to North-America (Dublin: 1766), Provenance: Signed by Englishman "John Cartwright", with scattered text notations and corrections apparently in his hand in contemporary brown ink. Cartwright (1740-1824) was a naval officer, political reformer and pamphleteer, who refused to serve against the American colonies. In 1774, he published "Letters on American Independence" siding against colonial taxation. Additionally, the volume is signed by Charles James Fox (1749-1806), noted English statesman, member of Parliment and orator who was also against the British forces and in strong support of the American colonies. Fox has pencilled his opinions regarding the valiant efforts of Cartwright on the free pages of this volume. & , Giving an Account of a Voyage to Canada, and Travels through that vast Country, and Louisiana, to the Gulf of Mexico Undertaken by Order of the Present King of France & In the era that these letters were written, it was very common-place for the clergy to be under the support of one or more of the nobility who acted as sponsors and correspondents for the venturing missionary priest. That was the arrangement between Charlevoix and the Dutchess. His letters to her were lengthy and very complete in detail. While Canada was a vast and only mildly settled area under the tutelege of the Hudson's Bay Company, the "Louisiana" referred to in this title actually covered almost the complete half of American North America west of the Mississippi River. This land, almost totally unexplored and unsettled, was eventually to become the Louisiana Purchase and would be criss-crossed by the likes of Alexander Henry The Younger from 1799 to 1814 and the well recognized expedition of Lewis and Clark in 1804-06 with many additional trapper and hunter forays into the Great Plains and Indian Country. Charlevoix was the first writer and traveller who describes the interior areas of America. & This is the early translation of Charlevoix's Journal d'un Voyage, which was first published in 1744 as the third volume of his Histoire de la Nouvelle France; however it does not include the Preliminary Discourse and excludes the first letter which describes his voyage from Orleans to Rochefort, commencing instead with the longer voyage from Rochelle to Quebec. & TPL 4698

THE HISTORY OF KING LEAR, A TRAGEDY; AS IT IS NOW ACTED AT THE KING'S THEATRES. REVIVED, WITH ALTERATIONS,

      C. Hitch and L. Hawes. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1763. Paperback. B&W Illustrations; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 69, [2] pages; THE HISTORY OF KING LEAR, A TRAGEDY; As it is now acted at the King's Theatres. Revived, with Alterations. Restored in paper wrappers and stored in a protective folding clamshell case of thick paper. Solidly bound with clean, age-toned pages. The book measures approximately 4" x 6 1/2". A scarce, small version of William Shakespeare's King Lear, with alterations by Nahum Tate. Nahum Tate is best known today as the author of the most famous-and infamous-adaptation of a Shakespeare play, his version of King Lear. During his lifetime, he established himself as an all-around man of letters, producing a wide range of poetry and drama. After the failure of his original play, The Loyal General, Tate limited his playwriting activities to adaptations of Renaissance texts. New versions of earlier plays that no longer pleased audiences had been a regular feature of the theatre since it reopened with the Restoration. The success of Dryden's All for Love (1677) intensified interest in neglected plays by Shakespeare, and Tate was but one of the many playwrights to attempt to cash in on the vogue. In quick succession, he offered versions of Richard II, King Lear, and Coriolanus. Tate applied the same general approach to each play, removing ambiguities from plots, characters, and language, and borrowing roughly fifty percent of his lines from Shakespeare's text. Each play, however, received a wildly different response. ***The result of Tate's work was the now infamous happy ending: the marriage of Cordelia and Edgar and the regularizing of Shakespeare's language for the more refined taste of the late seventeenth century; his characters by providing clear motivations for their actions; and his plot by removing indecorous comedy (such as the fool). *** Tate's Lear was remarkably successful, perhaps the most successful Shakespearean adaptation of all time. It held the stage for 150 years as audiences continued to prefer it to the original. It is so enmeshed in the performance history of Shakespeare's masterpiece that it has a permanent place. It was first produced for use in "The Duke's Theatres" and as it became more successful, reissued for the "King's Theatres". Illustrated with headpieces and tailpieces. ESTC# T151986, 1763 edition not listed. .

Contemporary vellum, title in gilt on spine. Some foxing, head of spine a little worn. Provenance: bookplate Charles Atwood Kofoid (American Zoologist); George Wilbraham of Delamere House, Northwich Cheshire (bookplate); Verne Roberts, Bibliotheca Mechanica (bookplate) and Andreas Gedeon. (bookplate), Christie's sale 5442, April 23, 2008. --- Riccardi I/1, 180; Honeyman Coll. 428; Roller-G. I, 146; de Backer-S. I, 1841; see PMM 203 and Norman 277 for 1st edition. - Third (first Venetian) edition of Boscovich's fundamental work in the history of scientific thought, a precursor of modern atomic theory by the eminent Dalmatian Jesuit mathematician and polymath. "Boskovich's theory influenced the position of nineteenth-century field physics with regard to the relations between space and matter; it was employed by Faraday and Kelvin, and J. J. Thomson used its curve of forces to introduce the earliest concepts of atomic physics" (Norman). The bookplate of Charles Atwood Kofoid (1865-1947) is interesting; there are planktonic organisms about to be hauled into the plankton net being towed by the research vessel. Kofoid was born in Illinois in 1865, did his undergraduate work at Oberlin College, and received his PhD in Zoology from Harvard in 1894. He was at the University of Michigan for a year, and for five and a half years, he was Superintendent of the Illinois Biological Station, where he wrote numerous articles and books, including the massive The Plankton of the Illinois River 1894-1899. He next went to the University of California at Berkeley where he was a leading member of the faculty for twenty-five years. Look at the upper left end of the bookplate; the campanile (bell tower) seen outside the window is the one on the Berkeley campus of the University of California. Kofoid was one of the leading investigators in protozoology and limnology, and was the developer of what came to be known as the Kofoid Bucket, a device used in the collection of planktonic samples. The associates of Professor Kofoid are said to have been always impressed by the succession of arrivals of packages of books, which did not cease until his death in 1947. A few months before his death, he gave the University more than 40,000 volumes, including many rare works in the history of science and medicine..

The New Testament in Greek [Signed by George Seferis, His Copy]

London: Oxford [Clarendon Press], 1763. First edition thus. Hardcover. Near Fine. A Near Fine copy of the New Testament, in Greek, previously owned by George Seferis and SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the front free endpaper, and before him owned by David Francis Atcherley (1783-1845), the Barrister Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster, England. Under is signature, Seferis has written "Athens in Crises". We presume this latter statement to be a reference to the the atrocities committed in Athens by the Military. Seferis has written two other words on the book's front free endpaper, the meaning of which we have not yet determined. Bound in full leather with the compartmented spine decorated richly in gilt, the boards blocked in gilt and in blind, spine ends and board edges decorated in gilt, with all edges of the closed page block gilted as well. The text is printed in beautiful Baskerville type. The boards show some modest scratching and marking, the spine a bit of white spotting and some tiny nicks, and the leading edge of the closed page block has a small stain. A portion of the front board is differentially sunned. There are a few scattered marginal notations in pencil and a small amount of pencil underlining to a few pages. Page 40 bears a small marginal note in ink that we believe to have been made by Seferis. A Greek Diplomat, Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. Here we offer his own copy of the New Testament in Greek, in Near Fine condition, SIGNED WITH ACCOMPANYING NOTES on the half title BY GEORGE SEFERIS. RARE.

THE HISTORY OF ENGLAND from the accession of James I to that of the Brunswick line [later titles vary]

London:: Printed for J. Nourse; R. and J. Dodsley; and W. Johnston [later imprints vary],, 1763-83.. First Edition. Eight volumes, 4to, half-titles present in vols. I and II, without the engraved portrait in volume III, outer leaves of some volumes foxed, contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt, contrasting labels, spines generally rather rubbed and eroded, and some joints cracked, but all of the volumes are sound. All first editions. Because of the ten year gap between production of volumes V and VI, sets of the History frequently comprise only the first five volumes; complete sets have become exceedingly uncommon on the market. (This is just our second one). CBEL II, 1738; Hill, The Republican virago, chapter 2, et passim. Macaulay (1731-1891) was praised by Mary Wollstonecraft and Dr. Johnson and emulated by Mdm. Roland. She led an infamous life in London and Paris. A controversial figure, she was vilified by many but Wollstonecraft called her "the woman of the greatest abilities that this country has ever produced" in The Vindication... In 1784, she traveled to the US and visited with Washington for 10 days. Her republican sentiments created the trouble with critics such as Disraeli and Smyth complaining of her character assasination. Her History had mixed reviews on its publication, as her liberal views antagonized certain scholars. She was praised by David Hume. Horace Walpole praised her work but called her prejudiced. Gray agreed with Walpole that it was the most sensible, unaffected, and best history of England that we have had yet. She was attacked by Pitt, DeQuincey and Isaac Disraeli. Catharine Macaulay began publishing her History... to the revolution in 1763, but the project was not to see its completion for another twenty years. "The History defended the Whig interpretation of the Stuarts and the Civil War; it reflected the republican, or commonwealth, sympathies of Hollis and others who saw in the political situation of the early reign of George III the betrayal of the English constitution... The History was generally regarded as the best counter to David Hume's History of Great Britain, the main Tory version. Later writers have usually made Smollett's History the answer to Hume, but their contemporaries chose Catharine Macaulay. Hers was the first history of the 17th century written by a woman and by a republican"Todd, Dictionary of British and American women writers. In 1778 she began publishing her history of the post-revolutionary period. This work was critical of William III, Robert Walpole, and others in the Whig hierarchy. It was poorly received, and she never progressed beyond the first volume.

Vida portentosa del Americano Septentrional Apostol el V.P. Fr. Antonio Margil de Jesus, fundador, y exguardian de los colegios de la Santa Cruz de Queretaro, de Christo Crucificado de Guatemala, y de nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Zacatecas

A fundamental work, in its rare first Mexican edition, relating to the first Texas Mission. 1763. Mexico. Imprenta de la Bibliotheca Mexicana. In 8vo (202 mm x 145 mm). 17 ff. + 336, missing a plate. Contemporary limp vellum, spine lettered in ink, now faded, a little stained, endpapers renewed, upper hinge starting. Title with inner marginal restoration with loss of a few letters replaced in ink facsimile, mainly marginal worm holes, some larger, and three pin hole sized holes through text, unobtrusive though, last three folios remargined, else exceedingly fresh and clean. First edition, of great rarity, a second one, much more common, appeared in Madrid in 1775. Father Margil (1657 ? 1726) was a Franciscan active as missionary in Texas from 1716 to 1721; during this period, he managed, secured and designed the establishment of three missions in the Nacodoches region. In 1716, he lead a group of Franciscans to settle Missions in Texas, these were attacked by French forces, which made him go back, nevertheless, he came back to form Guadeloupe again instigating both the San Jose and San Antonio Missions and the construction of a Convent. In these expeditions, Margil was aided by Father Isidro Felix de Espinosa, who will later write a biography on the life of his colleague. It would be him as well the founder of one of the most significant and successful missions of Texas, that of San Miguel de Aguayo. ?Father Margil's activities in Texas, 1716-1721, included establishment of three missions in the Nacogdoches area and several years? residence in San Antonio? (Howes). In history often the life of men cannot be separated from that of the places where they worked; the life of Margil is fundamental for the history of 18th century Texas & Guatemala (in fact, he is regarded as the Apostol de Guatemala). Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807), was a Swiss watchmaker, marine clockmaker, and writer on horological subjects. He was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland but In 1745 he moved to Paris, where he established his business and lived for the rest of his life. Berthoud?s extensive knowledge and talent were coupled with an indefatigable energy, and his technical training was matured and perfected by his contact with other masters of the trade. He is credited with making improvements in Pierre Leroy's detent escapement, the control mechanism used in chronometers, and for his advances in the mechanisms of marine clocks he was made a member of the French Institute and of the Royal Society, London. He was nominated Clockmaker to the French Navy in 1762 and to the French King in 1773. Ferdinand Berthoud is moreover the author of the watchmaking texts of the Encyclopedia of Diderot and d?Alembert. Baillie, Clocks and Watches An Historical Bibliography, page 262: "Less than half of Vol. 1 is devoted to describing various types of clocks and watches. The drawings are admirable, many are in perspective and some show what are now termed exploded views. The remainder of the volume describes in great detail the actual operations of making clocks and watches, including making springs, enamelling dials and gilding ... The second volume starts with wheel teeth and the calculation of trains. Then follows a long series of experiments on the pendulum, and the effect on its arc and isochronism of different escapements. From these the author concludes, and probably was the first to conclude, that the aim should be, not an isochronous pendulum, but an isochronous combination of pendulum and escapement. After several chapters on the temperature compensation of pendulums, a similar series of experiments is described on watch balances, from which the author succeeds in reaching a fair degree of temperature compensation by varying the stiffness of the mainspring and the mass of the balance wheel. He describes an observatory clock and two designs of marine time-piece, in which he uses curb compensation with a gridiron. Harrison's name is not mentioned, but the author does not explicitly claim the compensation device as his invention, and it may be presumed that he had seen, or had knowledge of, Harrison's No. 1 time-piece." Bromley, Clockmakers' Library, page 4, No. 72 (1786 edition only). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING. POSTAGE AT COST.

The Natural History of Vegetables, as well Foreign as Indigenous; including an Account of their Roots, Barks, Woods, Leaves, Flowers, Fruits, Seeds, Resins, Gums and Concreted Juices. As also their Properties, Virtues and Uses in Medicine

      J. Newbery, at the Bible and Sun, in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1763. 12mo., First Edition, on laid paper, with 24 fine copper-engraved plates, title very lightly age-browned at margins, signature erased leaving small hole at upper margin of 'Contents' leaf; contemporary calf, sides with double gilt frame border, neatly rebacked in calf to style, leather label ruled and lettered in gilt, speckled fore-edges, a very good, crisp, clean copy. Part I: Of Foreign Vegetables, and their Roots, Barks, Woods, Leaves, Flowers, Fruits, Seeds, Resins, Gums, and Concreted Juices; Part II: Of indigenous Herbs, Plants, Shrubs and Trees, and their Uses in Medicine. This important work, complete in itself, forms the sixth and final volume of Brookes' 'New and Accurate System of Natural History', a comprehensive encyclopaedia of natural history similar to, but quite independent of, Buffon. The plates are detailed and quite charming; the descriptions are surprisingly broad and must appeal to the cook as well as the apothecary. A second edition, with slight corrections and an appendix containing observations on hot-beds and the watering of plants (but adding no plates) appeared in 1772. Very scarce, especially in this condition. Freeman 505; Henrey 516. . Catalogs: sports & pastimes: cookery & gastronomy.

Carte de L'Isle de Sainte Lucie

Paris: J.N. Bellin, 1763. Copper-engraved map, in excellent condition, stamped on upper-center with the stamp of the French royal maritime printing office: "De l'Imp. de Dep. de la Mar. à Versail". 24 1/8 x 32 1/2 inches. A very elegant and detailed map of St. Lucia by one of the greatest French cartographers This very fine map of St. Lucia surrounds the island in seas traversed by rhumb lines. The rugged topography of this, one of the most scenic islands of the Caribbean, is captured in great detail. Oriented with the east towards the top of the map, the island features two broad ranges of mountains, which were formed by extreme tectonic activity. In the centre of the island is a plain that features a road, "Chemin de la Longue Chasse ou de la Soufriere" that runs the length of the island. In the lower left of the map is the "Pointe du Gros Piton", the distinctive mountain formation that cascades into the sea, and that is today St. Lucia's most celebrated site. The various aspects of the coast are labelled in great detail, and many places near the sea are dotted with the cultivated fields of sugarcane and banana plantations. Three cartographic insets adorn the upper portions of the map, each depicting one of the island's best harbours. Intended for practical use by mariners, each harbour is heavily detailed with depth soundings and notations of hazards. The insets are "Plan du Port du Carenage" (site of St. Lucia's modern capital of Castries), "Plan du Cul de Sac Des Roseaux" and "Mouilliages du Grande Islet et du Choc". The map is embellished with a very fine title cartouche, bordered by transitional Rococo and Neoclassical motifs, and surmounted by the French royal arms. St. Lucia was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1500, and named for St. Lucy of Syracuse. The French assumed auspices over the island in 1660, having signed a treaty with the indigenous Carib tribe. Over the next century and a half, the island went back and forth fourteen times between French and British sovereignty before the British assumed an enduring hegemony in 1814. The island became an independent member of the Commonwealth in 1979. This map was part of the l'Hydrographie Française, a great sea atlas, published by Bellin in two volumes from 1755 to 1766. This was one of the finest works of the prolific Bellin, the "Hydrographer to the King", who was so highly regarded that the British (who were almost always at war with France) made him a member of their Royal Society.         A COMPLEAT HISTORY OF THE LATE WAR; OR ANNUAL REGISTER OF IT'S [sic] RISE, PROGRESS, AND EVENTS IN EUROPE, ASIA, AFRICA, AND AMERICA. AND EXHIBITING THE STATE OF THE BELLIGERENT POWERS AT THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE WAR

Dublin. 1763.. [16],559pp. plus ten portraits, one folding view, and five folding maps. Contemporary speckled calf, gilt leather label. Extremities rubbed. Minor scattered foxing and soiling. Very good. An interesting work, first published in Dublin, comprised of selections from the ANNUAL REGISTER from 1758 to 1763, this work provides an excellent contemporary account of the military events of the French and Indian War, especially the Siege of Quebec. This work is sometimes ascribed to Edmund Burke, as he was editor of the ANNUAL REGISTER during the period covered. The attribution to John Wright stems from the London 1765 edition which gives that name, possibly a pseudonym for Burke as author. With a large folding map of the British and French territories in North America, a folding view of Montreal, a plan of Louisbourg, and several engraved portraits, subjects of which include Admiral Boscawen, Gen. James Wolfe, George III, Prince Ferdinand, and Frederick III. HOWES W698, "aa." SABIN 105605 (another ed).

The History of England from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688

ONT> ONT>, 1763 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The History of England from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688 by David Hume. In eight volumes complete. A new edition, corrected. The History of England (1754 - 62) is David Hume's great work on England's history which was written in instalments while he was serving as librarian to the Faculty of Advocates in Edinburgh. His History became a best-seller, finally giving him the financial independence he had long sought. Both the British Library and the Cambridge University Library still list him as David Hume, the historian. More a category of books than a single work, Hume's History spanned from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688 and went through over 100 editions. Many considered it the standard history of England until Thomas Macaulay's The History of England from the Accession of James the Second. David Hume (1711 - 1776) was a Scottish philosopher, historian, economist, and essayist, known especially for his philosophical empiricism and skepticism. He was one of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy and the Scottish Enlightenment. Hume is often grouped with John Locke, George Berkeley, and a handful of others as a British Empiricist. With bookplates from various members of the Oates family to front of each volume and previous owner's ink inscriptions to front free endpapers. Condition: Incontemporary calf bindings. Externally, smart but with slight wear to extremities and the oddvery slight mark to boards. Four joint starting very slightly, three hinges strained. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean but with occasional slight foxing and spotting and the odd slight handling mark. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.

Dorsi lisci con titolo e tomaison in oro entro duplice tassello rosso, ricchi decori floreali e vegetali e filetti in oro. Tagli rossi, sguardie marmorizzate policrome. Ai frontespizi, vignette incise su rame da Prevost da invenzione di Cochin colorate all'epoca all'acquerello. Fregi tipografici incisi su rame ad arabesco. Piccoli restauri ai dorsi. Qualche brunitura usuale. Come riassume Carlo Cordié in Diz. Bompiani d.

[Together with:] Zoophylacii Gronoviani Fasciculus Secundus exhibens enumerationem Insectorum quae in Museo suo adservat....

Lugduni Batavorum, sumptibus auctoris, 1763-1764. 2 parts bound in one. Folio (418 x 264mm). pp. (4), 1-136, (4), with 14 engraved plates of fishes; pp. 137-236, with 3 engraved plates of insects and 1 plate of crustacea. Recent full calf, spine with red gilt lettered label. Without the third part containing the mollusca and zoophytes. This part was published posthumously in 1781 by F.C. Meuschen and is frequently missing. The work is a descriptive catalogue of the specimens in Gronovius private museum. "It is clear that the work is intended to make a contribution towards an improved systematic arrangement, as is suggested by the word 'Zoophylacium', which may be translated 'System of Nature'. Many new generic names are introduced with careful diagnoses, but the specific diagnoses are descriptive only and the species are indicated by numbers, with bibliographic references to contemporary authors such as Linnaeus, Seba, Poda, etc... The first part of the book, dated 1763, containing the mammals, reptiles, and fishes, is dedicated to Peter Collinson, an Englishman, who was a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, The second part, dated 1764, contains the insects, with the Crustacea included as 'Insecta Aptera'. It fails to show the keen analysis of characters which is so evident in the first part, and I should guess that Gronov was much less interested in insects than he was with mammals and fishes. Nevertheless he had a notable collection, and he needed about 45 pages to describe his Coleoptera and 25 pages for the Lepidoptera "(L.G. Higgens. The 'Zoophylacium...', published in Journ. Soc. Bibl. Nat. Hist. II, 6). Some old marginal annotations in a neat handwriting. Nissen ZBI, 1727.
