TWO ALBUMS OF MORE THAN 120 VUES D'OPTIQUE OF DIFFERENT LOCATIONS IN EUROPE].

Paris. 1760-1762. - Two volumes. 62; 61 leaves, each with a mounted plate. Images vary in size, either 11 x 16 inches and 8 x 12 inches. Oblong folio. 19th-century cloth, gilt; rebacked in red morocco. Corners repaired. Wear and soiling to boards. Internally clean, colors bright and fresh. Very good. Two large albums containing 123 brightly colored vues d'optique depicting scenes from Paris, Rome, London, and many other locations in Europe. Lettering is typically printed at the top and bottom of the plate, primarily in French, with the letters at the top reading backwards. The letters above the text were deliberately reversed since these prints were designed for viewing in optical machines with a magnifying glass and a reflective mirror, which gave the viewer an illusion of depth and reversed the image. The views are mostly of France, including many scenes from Versailles and the ports of the realm. There are likewise a significant number of views of important landmarks around Rome. Other views show notable locations in the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Poland, and London. A handful of the plates show more unusual locales - Mexico City, Siberia, St. Petersburg, Peking, Cayenne, and French Guiana. Altogether, an impressive collection of these handsome engravings.

Paris: Lattre, 1762. - 16mo., (4 6/8 x 3 inches). 7-page publisher's advertisement at end. "Idee de la Sphere, ou Principes sur la Geographique", by M. Bonne, 1723. Fine engraved hand-coloured title-page. 29 double-page engraved hand-coloured maps (without the frontispiece of the armillory sphere and the two unnumbered maps sometimes found with this edition). Fine contemporary cherry red morocco, each cover finely decorated with a border of triple gilt filets, with a fine gilt lily tool at each inner corner, the smooth spine ruled in six compartment, the second with a black morocco lettering-piece, the others decorated with fine gilt lily tools, all edges gilt. A FINE AND ATTRACTIVE COPY of this beautiful pocket atlas including double-page maps of both hemispheres; maps of the continents, including one each of North and South America; and several detailed maps of east and west Europe, including a six-sheet map of the German Empire. Essentially depicting Europe towards the end of the Seven Years War (1756-1763). With its origins in the French-Indian wars in North America two years earlier, the conflict began in Europe with the French siege of British Minorca and Prussia's invasion of Saxony, and ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. However the effect of the war was global: it ended France's position as the major colonial power in America, and consequently strengthened Britain's power there and in India. Rizzi-Zannoni was born 1736 in Naples and was renowned from an early age as one of the finest cartographers in Europe. In addition to cartography he worked as an astronomer, surveyor and mathematician. He was the first cartographer to triangulate Poland and helped also in the French and English border survey of America in 1757. While in the service of the Prussian's he was captured by the French at the Battle of Rosbach in early December 1757 and sent to France, where he lived for the next twenty years. In 1781 the Bourbon rulers of Naples made him director of the Topographical Office, one of the first governmental cartographic offices in Europe, where he oversaw the creation of the celebrated and monumental "Geographic Atlas of the Kingdom of Naples", published shortly before his death in 1812. Philipps 633, listing probably by error only 22 maps.         La Marchande de Canards

Moyreau, Paris 1762 - A fine composition showing a group of cavalrymen congregating oustide of a duck merchant's cottage. This beautifully coloured print is one of many engravings Jean Moyreau (1690-1762) made of Wouwerman's paintings. Born into a family of Dutch artists in Haarlem in 1619, the prolific draughtsman and painter Philips Wouwerman was primarily renowned for his lively battle and hunting scenes. After an early elementary introduction to the art of painting by his father, Paulus Joostens, he trained with the landscape painter Jan Wynants (1620-1679) and briefly worked in the Hamburg studio of the history painter Everard Decker (d. 1647) around 1638. Wouwerman later returned to Haarlem, where he joined the Guild of St. Luke, which later elected him to the office of vinder in 1646. His elegantly rendered, distinctive works, which are characterized by their luminous colour and detailed, animated treatment of figures and landscape alike, were extremely popular in the seventeenth century as well as the nineteenth century, during which they were zealously collected. In addition to his hunting scenes, Wouwerman's varied and substantial repertoire of subjects included military and battle scenes, landscapes, travellers, animals and genre subjects. Cf. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs , vol 14, p. 723. Hand-coloured engraving on laid paper by Moyreau. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor foxing, and a bit of mild rippling.

THE ENGLISH HERO: OR, SIR FRANCIS DRAKE REVIV'D. BEING A FULL ACCOUNT OF THE DANGEROUS VOYAGES, ADMIRABLE ADVENTURES, NOTABLE DISCOVERIES.The Sixteenth Edition.Inlarged and Reduced into Chapters and Contents, by R.B.

London: Printed for C. Hitch and L. Laws, and S. Crowder and Co., . 1762 - [6],162pp. including frontispiece portrait of Drake. 16mo. Modern gilt morocco, raised bands, gilt spine, a.e.g. Spine ends bit worn, outer hinges rubbed. Some scattered dust soiling. Else a very good copy. "R.B." were the initials of Robert Burton, the pseudonym for author-publisher Nathaniel Crouch. This account of the exploits of Sir Francis Drake was itself mainly cribbed from a work first published in 1653. Crouch's first edition appeared in 1687. Although styled "sixteenth edition" on the titlepage, that may have been counting from 1653 or, as Kraus suggests, the second and third editions may never have existed. An important work in the Drake legend, it describes the Nombre de Dios voyage of 1572, the circumnavigation of 1575-77, Drake's defeat of the Armada in 1588, and his final American voyages. "A biography of Drake in chap-book form.like all such chap-book publications, copies are seldom found" - Kraus (commenting on the 1695 edition). SABIN 9500 (ref).

Rome 1762 - Hind 64 (1st state)John Wilton-Ely 197The watermark is number 35 in John Wilton-Ely page 1161 and is dated between 1761 to the mid 1760'sThis plate is from the series Vedute di Roma. "The 135 plates of the Veduta di Roma, produced individually by Piranesi from the late 1740s until his death some thrity years later, represent almost every phase in his stylistic evolution and reflect his changing intellectual concerns. Throught these particular works, which were spread all over the Continent by means of the Grand Tour, Piranesi was not only to revolutionize the conventional form of the veduta but was to transform the European vision of classical antiquity" (John Wilton-Ely)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded

Copper engraving by Canot, after Serres from a drawing made "on the spot". Expert marginal repairs. Sheet size: 18 1/2 x 25 5/8 inches. Spectacular images recalling the siege and capture of Havana in 1762. A fine pair of views from a series illustrating events during the capture and reduction of Havana by a force under the command of Sir George Pocock (1706-1792). In February 1762 Pocock "was appointed commander-in-chief of 'a secret expedition' . which sailed from Spithead on 5 March . On 26 April it arrived in Martinique, sailed again on 6 May, and . landed . the troops six miles to the eastward of Havana on 7 June . The seige-works were at once commenced. A large body of seamen were put ashore, and 'were extremely useful in landing the cannon and ordnance stores , manning the batteries, making fascines, and supplying the army with water' (Beatson) [these preparations are shown in the first of the present plates]. By the 30th the batteries were ready, and on 1 July opened a heavy fire, supported by three ships of the line, under the immediate command of Captain Hervey of the Dragon [this incident is pictured in the second plate]. The Moro was engaged, but after some six hours, the ships were obliged to haul out of action, two of them - the Cambridge and the Dragon - having sustained heavy loss and much damage . the English batteries gradually subdued the enemy's fire . the Moro was taken by storm on 30 July, and on 13 Aug. the town . surrendered by capitulation. The money value of the prize was enormous. The share of Pocock alone, as naval commander-in-chief, was 122,697l. 10s. 6d." ( DNB ). Dominic Serres 'was born in 1722 at Auch in Gascony, and was educated in the public school there. His parents intended him for the church, but, this not suiting his taste, he ran away from his native town, and made his way on foot into Spain. He there shipped on board a vessel for South America as a common sailor, and eventually became master of a trading vessel to the Havannah, where he was taken prisoner by a British frigate and brought to this country about 1758. After his release he married and lived for a time in Northamptonshire. He had received some instruction in drawing, and commenced life in England as a painter of naval pieces, for which the wars of the period furnished an abundance of subjects. He received some assistance from Charles Brooking, and soon established a position. In 1765 Serres became a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists, and exhibited with them for two years. On the establishment of the Royal Academy in 1768 he was chosen one of the foundation members, and was a constant contributor up to the time of his death. Between 1761 and 1793 he exhibited eight works at the Society of Artists, twenty-one at the Free Society, and 105 at the Royal Academy . Serres was a good linguist. In 1792 he succeeded Wilton as librarian to the academy. He was also appointed marine-painter to George III, but he did not long hold these offices. He died in 1793, and was buried at St. Marylebone Old Church.' ( DNB ). Copper engraving by Mason, after Serres from a drawing made "on the spot". Expert marginal repairs.       Rome. 1762 - Copper engraving. Hand coloured Very good condition. Large margins Size: 39 x 54 cm A magnificent view of the Fountain of Aqua Felice, also known as the fountain of Moses. Pope Sixtus V had the fountain built by the remains of the Baths of Diocletion. Once set into place, though, the statue turned out quite stout and disproportionate; the people of Rome, accustomed to much more refined works of art, strongly criticized it and laughed upon what they called the 'ridiculous Moses'.

Du Contract Social; ou Principes Du Droit Politique

Par J.J. Rousseau, Citoyen de Geneve. A Amsterdam, chez Marc-Michel Rey, 1762. - First 12mo edition, issued only several weeks after the first issue. 12mo, full black 19th century calf, red speckled page edges; spine faded to brown, raised bands. Some light dust soiling to pages edges, minor rubbing, spine faded to brown. Previous ownership writing in pencil to inside front endpapers, as well as a small previous bookseller description affixed to front endpaper, and a few minor stray pencil marks. In this edition, the publisher introduced the original vignette with lady liberty standing (not seated), which Rousseau decided should be removed from the title page. The statement on marriage has also been removed. Approximately only 2500 copies of this issue were printed. The publishing history of the Contract Social is a complicated one. When the press was set up and the first copies already printed, Rousseau received a proof of the title-page which he disliked. He had also decided to tone down his note on marriage where he criticised the monopoly of the Catholic clergy. He therefore instructed his publisher, Rey, to change the title-page and the final section. Printing and the Mind of Man 207. On pages cxv-cxxvi is the @Relacion historica del terremoto de Lisboa, describing the fatalities and damage of the 1755 earthquake. Chez L'Auteur (Ozanne; Rue St. Thomas du Louvre) 1762 - Large 8vo, later vellum spine with cloth boards, complete with all 50 engraved, b&w, numbered plates (some are actually text, in French), plus the engraved title and dedication (Le Duc De Choiseui) pages. Endpapers intact, with very little browning and foxing, with heavy laid paper. There are some very small and uniformly spaced pinholes in the left margin, from the old threaded binding. The plates are quite attractive, with their own explanatory texts on the page. This 'textbook' was produced in 1762, six years after he had been appointed Dessinateur de la Marine. He is known for his many maritime drawings (ports, naval battles, construction- like the current plates which show ships, battle formations and views). Ozanne was something of a child prodigy draughtsman, as by age 10 he was working at the Brest arsenal. Many of his original drawings are housed in Paris, at the Musee de la Marine, and the Cabinet des Dessins (Louvre). (Reference : Polak 7234). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Quarto (11 1/2" x 8") bound in original leather binding with raised bands and gilt label to spine. Edited by Antonio Tenreiro. In double column pages issued without map. First published in 1614. Fernão Mendes Pinto was a Portuguese explorer and writer. His exploits are known through the posthumous publication of his memoir Pilgrimage Peregrinação in 1614, an autobiographical work whose truthfulness is nearly impossible to assess. The tale of his adventures was written after the fact, according to Pinto's memories of the events, and for that reason it may be open to doubt as a completely accurate historical source. However, it well documents the impact of the Asian civilizations on the Europeans and constitutes a perfectly realistic analysis of Portuguese action in the Orient, far more realistic than the one made by Luís de Camões in The Lusiads. The most controversial of his claims is that of having been the first European to land in Japan and the introduction of the arquebus. Despite the impossibility of proving these specific assertions, there is little doubt that Pinto was among the first Europeans in Japan, and therefore his account may be considered more reliable than other books describing this period that were written long afterwards. Another controversial claim, that he fought in Java against the Muslims, has been analyzed by various historians. The Dutch historian P. A. Tiele, who wrote in 1880, did not believe Pinto was present during the campaign, but rather that he wrote his information from secondhand sources. Even so, Tiele admits Pinto's account cannot be disregarded because of the lack of alternative information about Javanese history during the time period; despite the doubts over Pinto's accuracy, his viewpoint may represent the only authoritative source in existence. Maurice Collis, a modern expert on Asian affairs who lived in the area for twenty years, holds the opinion that Fernão's accounts, while not entirely true, remain essentially true with respect to the basic events. Because of this Collis considers Pinto's work the most complete European account of 16th century Asian history. Condition: Some worming to the leather and internal gutters, leather scuffed and cracked at back heal corners, rubbing to raised spine areas, spine head chipped away. Red underling in pencil through out else a good copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

This work marks the beginning of scientific teratology. Haller himself esteemed this work as among his best productions. With the many scientific corrections which Haller was able to present to anatomists, owing to his exact investigations and to his studies under Albinus, he was bound to make pictorial representations of anatomic preparations the main object of his care. His illustrations are therefore very numerous. They are very clear, vivid, highly exact, and artistic. The greater part of them had been scattered through his many writings and these were later collected by Haller himself under the title «Opera minora.». Haller himself esteemed this work and his 'Icones' as among his best productions (Choulant). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
