Lesebändchen. Marmorvorsätze. 8vo. "In 1762 the elector palatine, Karl Theodor, who was very interested in the arts and sciences, constructed an astronomical observatory for Mayer at Schwetzingen, his summer residence. In 1772-1774 a second and larger observatory was erected at Mannheim, then the capital of the electoral Palatinate. This observatory was well equipped for the time, with instruments from the best British workshops [.] Appointed court astronomer, Mayer was relieved of his duties as a theologian (the Jesuit order was dissolved by Pope Clement XIV in 1773, which made such a step easier)" (DSB IX, 231). Quintus Horatius Flaccus

Birminghamiæ [Birmingham]: Joannis Baskerville, 1762.. First edition. 12mo. (vi), 300, (2) pp. Contemporary speckled calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered green label, gilt to compartments, marbled endpapers, bookplates of J.D. Barnard and Roger Senhouse to the front pastedown plus the ownership inscription of Lytton Strachey on the second free endpaper, signed "G.L. Strachey". A very good copy. The publisher Roger Senhouse was Strachey's last lover, purportedly an intense and, it has since been suggested, sadomasochistic relationship. One assumes this volume was passed on as a gift, though no presentation inscription is present. Senhouse's book collection was sold at Sotheby's in 1971, a year after his demise.

Printed for T. Becket and P.A. De Hondt, in the St, 1762 ; 1763., London, - 2 volumi in -4, pp. [16],xvi,270; (4) xxxvi, 248. Leg. piena pelle dell’epoca. Dorsi a nervetti con fregi oro e titoli su tassello. Tagli rossi. Frontespizi impressi in rosso e nero con vignette incise da I. Taylor. Il volume con ll poema dedicato a Fingal comprende anche: "A dissertation concerning the antiquity, &c. of the poems of Ossian the Son of Fingal". Es. molto buono. Prima Edizione. Il tomo II (Temora) contiene, su tre pagine manoscritte in chiara grafia dell’epoca, "Copy of a letter to the right hon.ble the Earl of D. _ Rome, August the 28th, 1764", nella quale si discorre sull’opera, commentandone l’argomento e i contenuti. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director

London: Printed for the Author, 1762. Third edition. Folio. 200 copper-plate engravings, plus dedication, of furniture designs. 19th-century full paneled mottled calf, gilt, to period style, by Rivière and Son, a.e.g.; joints strengthened, scuffing to boards and rubbing to tips, Batsford book ticket; plate 173 repaired at top margin; else a fine copy in a handsome binding . The third, and best, edition - with an additional 40 plates - of the highly influential furniture-pattern book by the London cabinetmaker, Thomas Chippendale, who was, in fact, the first English cabinetmaker to ever publish his designs. "His special claim for artistic fame is as a brilliantly original, innovative, and influential designer who also made masterpieces of furniture. His designs were plagiarized from at least the early Victorian period by the publisher John Weale, and more or less free adaptations from The Director have been a staple product of commercial furniture makers since the mid-nineteenth century" - ODNB

Cambridge: Printed by John Baskerville, 1762. Third Edition n. Hardcover. The Baskerville Book of Common Prayer, in an Elaborately Gilt, Inlaid, and Distinctively Irish Binding. 241 x 165 mm (9 1/2 x 6 1/2"). [344] leaves. Third Edition. EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY IRISH RED MOROCCO, VERY ELABORATELY GILT AND INLAID, covers with central white morocco lozenge inlaid and tooled with gilt flowers, plumes, and birds, this enclosed by radiating rows of small tools including stars, flowers, foliage, and a delightful bird with a rose in its beak, the whole framed by undulating floral sprigs; raised bands, spine gilt in compartments quartered by a saltire and tooled with roses and other flowers, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (small expert repair along top of spine). Title page with ink inscription of A. Wolseley dated 1772 at top and with small decorative printed paper strip pasted over the price at bottom. Gaskell 19; Griffiths 1762/4. Covers less dark than the spine (and so somehow faded?), slight flaking--but no cracking--to joints, corners a little worn, but the once splendid binding still extremely attractive, without serious wear, and with its very animated gilt still bright, despite the loss of color in the morocco background. Many leaves with faint browning and muted foxing (one gathering conspicuously foxed), some other trivial imperfections, but fresh and clean and generally pleasing internally. This unusually large and important Baskerville Press prayer book is bound in one of the most distinctive Irish styles, which Craig terms the "Irish White Inlay." In his "Irish Bookbindings 1600-1800," Craig notes that this design frequently appears on prayer books printed between 1750 and 1780. In his catalogue of J. R. Abbey's bindings, Hobson notes that white leather or vellum inlays were "almost, if not quite, unknown" in 18th century England, and declares that "any British binding with cream-coloured inlays is almost certainly Irish." He also observes that Baskerville's publications were especially popular among the Anglo-Irish squires who had their books decoratively bound. While we have not been able to identify the binder definitively, the curling plumes and the sweet, rose-bearing birds bear a strong resemblance to tools used by the binder in the employ of Dublin bookseller Joseph Leathley. According to McDonnell and Healy, Leathley "exercised a fastidiousness and taste which is remarkable" in the bindings he ordered. McDonnell and Healy's "Gold-Tooled Bookbindings Commissioned by Trinity College Dublin" pictures tools used by the artisan known only as "Joseph Leathley's Binder"; the birds holding rose sprigs shown as tools #149a and 149b on Plate LXXXVIII and the plumes shown as #162a and 162b on Plate LXXXIX appear to be quite similar to those on our binding. In any case, its profusion of elegant and charming tools makes our beautiful volume a compelling object, whoever produced it. The book represents the fulfillment of one of Baskerville's particular ambitions: to produce a fine octavo version of the Book of Common Prayer (an aim announced in the preface to his 1758 edition of Milton). In order to achieve this goal, Baskerville had to be appointed printer to one of the three presses privileged to print official Bibles and prayer books. Baskerville applied to Cambridge, submitting a type specimen designed, according to Griffiths, "to be readable by 'people who want Spectacles but are ashamed to use them at Church.'" Cambridge appointed Baskerville a supernumerary printer in December of 1758, and he began work at that time on his Bible and Book of Common Prayer. Our volume is the variant without the "lozenge and star" border used in the 1760 and 1761 printings, an absence that gives the text a spaciousness more like those of Baskerville's most beautiful volumes.

Papers Relative to the Rupture with Spain

1762, 1762 - (Great Britain - Parliament). Papers Relative to the Rupture with Spain, Laid before Both Houses of Parliament, On Friday the Twenty ninth Day of January, 1762, By His Majesty's Command. L.: Printed by Mark Baskett, Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty; and by the Assigns of Robert Baskett, 1762. Pp (2),[1]-71,(1). 8vo, plain wraps. O'Dea 168, Waldon pp.487-8, TPL 6496. A collection of vigorous correspondence, both inter-ministerial & diplomatic. "As to the stale and inadmissible Pretensions of the Biscayans and Guispuscoans to fish at Newfoundland, on which important Point your Excellency is already so fully instructed, you will again on this Occasion let M. Wall clearly understand, That this is a Matter held sacred; and that no Concession on the Part of His Majesty, so destructive to this true and capital Interest of Great Britain, will be yielded to Spain, however abetted and supported [.]" - p.3, William Pitt to the Earl of Bristol, Ambassador to Spain. "After M. Wall had worked up his Anger to a Height I had never before seen, he then said, with uncommon Warmth, That he would himself be the Man to advise the King of Spain, since his Dominions were to be overwhelmed, at least to have them seized with Arms in his Subjects Hands, and not to continue the passive Victim he hitherto appeared to be in the Eyes of the World. I attended to this Discourse, without interrupting the Thread of it; and, at the Conclusion of it, I desired, with the utmost Serenity, of General Wall to give me an Answer to the Questions I had first started, and we would afterwards proceed to discuss what his Excellency had been expatiating upon. But the Spanish Minister only renewed some of his former Exclamations, by insisting, that we had set the Spanish Power at Defiance during this War; that we had attacked and plundered their Vessels, insulted their Coasts; violated the Neutrality of these Kingdoms, encroached upon the Territorial Jurisdiction of His Catholick Majesty's Dominions in America, by fortifying ourselves in an illegal Manner in the Bay of Campeachy and the Gulf of Honduras, erecting fresh Settlements, and seizing on Logwood in a most arbitrary Manner, besides denying the Spaniards a Right, they had so long claimed, to fish upon the Banks of Newfoundland; nay, even wanting to put the Biscayans and Guispuscoans on a worse Footing at present, with regard to their Pretensions to the Bacallao Trade, than they had been by the Treaties of Utrecht, and that of 1721, where the Article in relation to them was, That those Spaniards should enjoy que Jure sibi vindicare poterunt : Whereas all my Instructions had run to declare their Claim to be stale and inadmissible, and finally, to assert that England hoped the Catholick King would never expect this sacrifice as the Price of a Union, which could never be consented to on those Terms." - pp.26-27, the Earl of Bristol to the Earl of Egremont, Secretary of State. The conflict is reitierated on pp. 4, 8, 10, 13, 16, 28, 35, 53, and 55. Like the TPL copy this is in "wrappers of old greenish gray paper", in this case chipped & detached wrappers, ow vg. 750.00 [Attributes: Soft Cover]

XenophonÕs Memoirs of Socrates. With the defence of Socrates, before his judges. Translated from the original GreekÉ

Bath: Printed by C. PopeÉand sold by A. MillarÉ 1762. - Sarah Fielding (1710-68) was the sister of Henry Fielding and a friend of Samuel Richardson and of Jane Collier. She was the author of several novels, the best-known of which is The Adventures of David Simple, a Moral Romance (1744). She was ÒÉone of the earliest of the English novelists to explore with close attention varying states of feeling and the roots of motiveÓ (Oxford Companion to English Literature). She was a woman of considerable learning, and her translation of Xenophon is highly regarded. The D.N.B. notes that it includes some notes and possibly a revision by James Harris of Salisbury (the author of Hermes). It was published by subscription at Bath, where Fielding spent her final years. In a note to the preface, Fielding defends her use of the word ÒMemoirÓ for the title of the book, citing the entry in JohnsonÕs Dictionary and Elizabeth CarterÕs use of the word (presumably in her translation of Epictetus).       Leiden. 1762. - [12],176,[8]pp. plus folding engraved map. Quarto. Later 18th-century three-quarter vellum over marbled boards, spine inscribed. Heraldic bookplate of Joseph Rowe Webster on front pastedown. Moderate dampstaining, occasional minor foxing. A very good copy. Second edition, after the first London edition of 1739- 43, of Gronovius' work, based on Clayton's specimens, which comprised the first systematic flora of Virginia and was responsible for establishing many new genera. "John Clayton came to Virginia in 1705, where his father was attorney general. The DNB has confused him with another John Clayton, born in 1686, who came to Virginia at the end of the seventeenth century and contributed papers on medical botany to the Royal Society. The present John Clayton had an estate on the Piankatank River in Mathews County, spent much time in collecting Virginia plants, and discussed them with J.F. and L.T. Gronovius, Linnæus, Kalm, Collinson, and Bartram. Donald Culross Peattie writes in DAB: 'After many delays, the results of his work were embodied in the FLORA VIRGINICA by John Frederick Gronovius. Because Clayton's herbarium specimens formed the basis of this work, it is often asserted that it should be called 'Clayton's Flora Virginica,' but the final identification of the specimens, the science and system of the book, were largely the work of Gronovius'" - Hunt. The map, which was not issued in the first edition, documents Clayton's travels, "which show that he was seldom north of the Rappahannock or south of the James, and that his knowledge of the mountains did not extend beyond the Blue Ridge. He was thorough, however, in his exploration of the middle Tidewater districts, and recent botanical work shows that as a field botanist he was more astute than has been realized" - DAB. An important Virginia flora. SABIN 28924. PRITZEL 3607. HUNT 571. BM (NATURAL HISTORY) II, p.739. ARNOLD ARBORETUM I, p.304. JCB (1)I:1316. DAB IV, pp.184-85.
