(Cohen, 436. McEachern, n°7, p. 123. Gagnebin, IV, p. 1868, 7-8).         A SHORT ACCOUNT OF THAT PART OF AFRICA, INHABITED BY THE NEGROES. WITH RESPECT TO THE FERTILITY OF THE COUNTRY; THE GOOD DISPOSITION OF MANY OF THE NATIVES, AND THE MANNER BY WHICH THE SLAVE TRADE IS CARRIED ON...THE SECOND EDITION, WITH LARGE ADDITIONS AND AMENDMENTS.

Philadelphia:: W. Dunlap,. 1762. 80pp, stitched into modern plain wrappers. Very Good. A significant work by "the most determined, prolific, and successful advocate of the Negro's rights in the American colonies. Not single-handed, of course, but single-mindedly he worked to make the Quakers and Philadelphians into an effective core of anti-slavery sentiment." LCP Negro History Exhibition p. 8. The first, 56-page edition was also published in 1762. Benezet's purpose "is to lay before the candid Reader the Depth of Evil attending...the Prosecution of the Negroe Trade, in which the English Nation has long been deeply concerned, and some in this Province have lately engaged." He systematically rebuts "excuses" for the slave trade and slavery: that its victims "are mostly Persons who have been taken Prisoners in those Wars which arise amongst themselves;" or that "Negroes are generally a stupid, savage People, and...that the bringing them from their Native Land is rather a Kindness than an Injury." Instead, the European nations foment wars in Africa, the better to stimulate the slave trade; the Africans enjoy the amenities of civilization and humane relations in their own societies, when left to themselves. Evans 9067. LCP 1075. Dumond 26. Hildeburn 1786. Not in Work or Blockson.

Noticia sucinta de Mohamed, q[ue] vulgarmente llaman Mahoma

1762 - Rare Spanish manuscript on the life of Mahoma. 27 October 1762. [N.p.]. In 4to (215 mm x 152 mm). 31 ff. Recent full vellum, spine lettered in ink. Manuscript on paper, untrimmed, faint mainly marginal water staining, else very good, perfectly legible. Intriguing Spanish manuscript on the life of Mahoma, of unknown authorship. It begins with the early life of Mahoma [Muhammad]: “Mahomed, which means Praised, was born in Meca at the beginning of the year five hundred sixty eight”, and continues with a succinct relation of his ascendance. Evidently a well-informed writer, the manuscript carries on with Mahoma´s deeds and life, before continuing to the second part of the manuscript, which is his appreciation of the costumes of the Muslims –Mahometanos. The authorship is unknown, although its signed “Martin el Pensador”. The manuscript is written in a perfectly legible hand. By the 18th century, Western knowledge of the life of the Muslim Prophet was no secret, there having been earlier –and better, more academic- works on the subject; however, this seems to be an original source, or a singular composition by a Spanish writer.         Medical commentaries. Part I (all published)

      A. Hamilton for A. Millar, London 1762 - Hunter, William (1718-83). Medical commentaries. Part I [all published]. Containing a plain and direct answer to Professor Alexander Monro jun. Interspersed with remarks on the structure, functions, and diseases of several parts of the human body. 4to. vii, [1], 103 [i.e. 113]pp. 4 engraved plates after van Rymsdyk. London: A. Hamilton for A. Millar, 1762. 282 x 230 mm. 18th century half calf, marbled boards, rebacked. Some foxing and toning but very good. Stamp of the Northern Ireland Royal College of Surgeons on the title. First Edition of the only book-length text publication of Hunter’s career. The Commentaries were motivated by the dispute between Hunter, his younger brother John, his pupils William Hewson and William Cruikshank, and Alexander Monro secundus (1697-1767) over who had been the first to discover that the lymphatic vessels were absorbent—an achievement that Hunter described as "the greatest discovery both in physiology and in pathology . . . since the discovery of the circulation" (quoted in Porter, p. 27). The lymphatics dispute contributed to the growing rancor between William and John Hunter that led to a complete breach between the two brothers, culminating in William cutting John out of his will. Part II of the Commentaries was to have related to Hunter’s Gravid Uterus (1774) but the text was so delayed that its connection with the Commentaries was dropped. Porter, "William Hunter: A surgeon and a gentleman," in Bynum and Porter, eds., William Hunter and the Eighteenth-Century Medical World (1985), pp. 7-34. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        La France Agricole et Marchande.

Avignon: [publisher not identified], 1762 - 2 volumes, octavo (198 × 124 mm). Contemporary catspaw roan, green morocco label, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, board edges gilt, marbled endpapers, green edges. Boards a little scuffed, with a little surface worm damage, occasional minor foxing. An excellent set. 11 folding plates (2 maps, of which 1 is hand-coloured). First edition of this economic utopia. Published anonymously, as were many of Goyon de la Plombanie's works. Foreshadowing the effects of increased production on society, the results of industrialisation, urban migration and overcrowding, he proposed the use of cartography to document natural borders and indicate ownership and the improvement of road transport with the use of steam engines and a form of locomotive - technical advances well ahead of his time. Similarly, his fiscal proposals, witholding tax, land and property taxes, were all introduced after the French Revolution. Little is known about him (d. 1808); he was one of the editors of the Journal Economique, and after an army career turned his attention to economic questions. He wrote several works in which he denounced the insufficient supply of money and the increase in interest rates, always proposing reform of agriculture and economics. INED 2116.         Mit Bäumen und Büschen bewachsener Hang.

      - Feder in Braun, auf Bütten. 18,8:23,5 cm.

- 8°, full mottled sheep, smooth spine richly gilt with crimson morocco lettering piece (minor wear), gilt short title, marbled endleaves, text block edges rouged. Double-ruled border on every page. Typographical vignette on title page. Scattered very light foxing, Overall in very good condition. Early inscriptions on front flyleaf: "Del uso de Fr. Ferndo. Lopez" and "Librería de PPs. Franc. Cal. de Logroño." (10 ll.), 226 pp., (1 integral blank l.). *** FIRST EDITION; a second was printed by Ibarra's daughter in 1808. The Prologo (7 ll.) offers a short history of Portugal, notes on its geography, and a brief dicussion of available maps. Each of the six chapters includes an introduction on the history of the region and its major points of interest, followed by distances between towns. They are Entre Minho e Douro, Tras-os-montes, Beira, Estremadura, Alentejo, and Algarve. The section's title is printed vertically outside the double borders of the page. Information is also given for Spanish cities and towns near the frontier with Portugal. One of the intended uses for this book was to aid in sending correspondence and perhaps shipments of goods by post. The work is dedicated to Ricardo Wall (Richard Wall, 1694-1777), son of Irish Jacobite refugees living in Nantes, who entered Spanish naval service in 1716 and rose to the rank of field marshal by 1744. After being wounded he turned to a diplomatic career, serving as ambassador to the Court of St. James and then foreign minister under Fernando VI and Carlos III.Pedro Rodriguez Campomanes (1723-1803), Conde de Campomanes, "probably influenced Spanish economic thought of his time more than any other writer" (La Force, p. 156). The author's contemporary Sempere y Guarinos praised the @Discurso acerca do modo de fomentar a industria do povo highly: "Apenas se encontrará obra alguna, que en tan corto volumen comprenda tanto numero de principios y máximas, las mas importantes para el adelantamiento de la industria nacional, y de la felicidad pública" (II, 80). Campomanes advocated household industry - mainly textiles - so that people would not have to move from small towns and farms. In order to spread the knowledge that would make such industry possible, he strongly advocated the formation of local economic societies. When the @Discurso was first printed in Madrid, 1774, the King ordered copies sent to all local governing officials and bodies of Spain, and to bishops for distribution among the clergy. The Conde de Campomanes was a leading minister of D. Carlos III; hence his economic philosophy, of the liberal, mercantilist school, had an enormous impact on Spain's economy. Among his reforms were free trade with America, tax exemptions for many raw materials, duties on more imports, and the creation of a national bank. Campomanes also wrote on a wide range of political, legal and historical matters. His achievements were widely recognized abroad: for instance, Benjamin Franklin welcomed him as a member of the American Philosophical Society merely on the basis of what had been printed about him in newspapers. He was created Conde de Campomanes in 1780.*** Duarte de Sousa 1, 580. Palau 193564; 273667. Ruiz Lasala 109: attributing it to Jacobo Cantelli; without collation. Aguilar Piñal VII, 1571. A complete set (in six volumes) of Breton's charming work devoted to China and it's people, crafts and arts. The illustrations originates from two young Chinese students who spent a few years studying in France supported by the French statesman Henri Leonard Bertin. Upon return to China the students produced more than 400 drawings of arts and crafts, of which many have been used in this work. The lovely plates mainly depict various artisans and vendors with their tools and products but several are devoted to costumes of emperors, ladies, lamas and soldiers. Some of the plates first appeared in Mason's "The costume of China" and "The Punishments of China" (1800-01). Cordier BS 64. Lipperheide 1524.
