        English Hero

1762. [CROUCH, Nathaniel]. The English Hero: Or, Sir Francis Drake Reviv'dÂ… Inlarged and reduced into Chapters and Contents, by R.B. London: Printed for C. Hitch, L. Hawes, S. Crowder and Co., 1762. 12mo (3-1/4 by 5 inches), contemporary full calf rebacked in calf-gilt, red morocco spine label. $1800.Later edition of this popular and influential biography of Sir Francis Drake, illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of the sea captain, in contemporary calf boards. This brief biography of Drake, a key contribution to his legendary status in the popular imagination, includes accounts of his global circumnavigation, his defeat of the Spanish Armada and his voyages to North America. ""Based largely on Fletcher's World encompassed [1628] and on Nichol's Sir Francis Drake revived [1626], this accountÂ… seems to have struck English popular fancy more forcibly"" than its sources (Howes B1035). In fact, although the title page denotes this the ""sixteenth edition,"" the book actually saw 23 by 1762. ""R.B."" are initials for ""Robert Burton,"" a pseudonym bookseller and publisher Nathaniel Crouch appears to have adopted in reference to the author of The Anatomy of Melancholy (1620): ""The AnatomyÂ… [gave] many humbly educated men a passing knowledge of the classics. In a similar fashion Crouch's history books presented shortened and simplified versions of serious works to audiences that might otherwise never have read them"" (DNB). First published in 1687. Sabin 9500. Contemporary ink markings and later pencil bibliographic notation to front pastedown.Occasional light foxing, minor closed tear to leaf [C6], free endpapers renewed. Contemporary calf boards lightly rubbed with expert restoration. Extremely good condition. Scarce.

Oratio inauguralis, de incremento philologiae sacrae ab idonea Arabiae atque Palaestinae exploratione sperando.

Franequerae, Gulielmus Coulon, 1762. - Folio. (4). 67, (1 blank) pp. With a woodcut coat of arms of the province of Friesland on the title-page, 1 woodcut headpiece, 1 woodcut tailpiece (plus 2 repeats) and 4 woodcut decorated initials (2 series). Set in roman and italic types with a few words of Hebrew. Modern boards, covered with grey paper, red and blue sprinkled edges. First and only edition of an inaugural lecture by Samuel Hendrik Manger (1735-1791), appointed ordinary professor of oriental languages and of Hebrew antiquities at the University of Franeker in 1760. Partly under the influence of the orientalist Albert Schultens, Manger valued Arabic studies for the insights they gave into Old Testament scholarship. In his present inaugural lecture, he discusses the controversial expedition to Palestine that several scholars were planning to make in that year. It shows his interest in archaeological research carried out in expeditions instigated by the German scholar Johann David Michaëlis. Manger believed they would inaugurate a new era in Biblical scholarship. - In very good condition and with very large margins, with only some minor marginal foxing in the title-page and an occasional unobtrusive small stain.         Holy Bible

1762. BIBLE. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments… Cambridge: Printed by Joseph Bentham, Sold by Benjamin Dod, 1762. Two volumes. Quarto, contemporary full red morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated boards and spines, raised bands, olive morocco spine labels, patterned endpapers, all edges gilt. $15,000.1762 “Standard Edition” of the King James Bible, with engraved allegorical frontispiece, distinctively bound in contemporary, elaborately gilt-tooled morocco.First published in 1611, the King James version is “the most celebrated book in the English-speaking world… Other translations may engage the mind, but the King James Version is the Bible of the heart” (Campbell, 1, 275). This 1762 edition marks the “standard edition” of that magisterial translation. “In this Bible a serious attempt was made [by S.F. Parris] to correct the text of King James’ version by amending the spelling and punctuation, unifying and extending the use of italics, and removing printers’ errors. Marginal annotations, which had been growing in some Bibles since 1660, although excluded from others, were finally received into the place they have occupied ever since, sundry new ones being added. Lloyd’s dates and chronological notes were also adopted and increased, and the marginal references were much enlarged” (Darlow & Moule 854). Handsomely full contemporary goatskin elaborately gilt-tooled with a border composed of floral, insect, star and crown-and-scepter tools, with two flame-burst rings occupying each board’s center, one inside the other, enclosing a ring of cherubs and the sacred monogram, IHS. Incorrect rendering “thy doctrine” retained in 1 Timothy 4:16. Includes Apocrypha. With engraved allegorical frontispiece (by Grignion after Hayman) and separate New Testament title page. Issued the same year in a folio edition, very few copies of which now survive. Herbert 1143. Infrequent scattered light foxing. Stunning contemporary morocco in excellent condition. An outstanding Bible, distinguished in elaborately gilt-tooled binding.

The Miners Guide: or, compleat miner. Containing, I. A succinct account of a vein in the earth, and by what names veins are distinguished, with a short account of their progress. II. The articles and customs of the High Peak and Wapentake of Wirksworth, with forms for bills of complaint, and verdict thereon; cross-bills, forms of arrest in actions of debt, in action of title, in case of trespass, form of bills to the twenty-four when called to view mines in dispute, and forms of verdict thereon; and most other forms necessary for all miners and maintainers of mines within the Wapentake of Wirksworth, with some practical observations on some of the articles, never before published. III. An account of the loadstone, with the first invention of the compass; to which is joined, Houghton's Dialling> and Levelling,> illustrated with a few examples. The whole carefully revised and corrected, so that it may be depended on. To all which is added, as a second part, an Appendix. ..... The second edition.

Birmingham: printed by T. Warren, jun. near the Chapel. 1762. 8vo., (4) + 112 + (1) and vii + (1) + 84pp., (p.101 is a printed folding table), contemporary half calf over marbled boards, generally rather rubbed or worn but the binding still sound and good. A very good copy with the 20th century armorial bookplate of William Allen Potter> (ca. 1888 - 1953), Nottinghamshire farmer, businessman and High Sheriff. A standard work of reference on an arcane subject for both mine owner and mine engineer and their lawyers. Divided into several sections, the first begins with a brief discussion of methods employed in finding 'veins' of lead-ore, copper-ore, or silver-ore. The second section deals with the laws regulating the mining industry, and articles for the High-Peak Hundred, Eyam and Stony-Middleton, Hassop, Ashford in Devon, the lead mines at Wirksworth, Long-Stone near Ashford - each with a list of the jurors, bills of complaint and cross-bills. On p.77 Hardy describes The Art of Dialling> and the properties of the lodestone and magnet followed by an explanation of how to arrange working shifts. The Appendix> includes a ready reckoner with tables and calculations to estimate loads, etc. First published in Sheffield in 1748, this edition is printed in a rather large antiqua type, which sometimes was linked to Baskerville, who was on good terms with the Birmingham printer. The type and layout are clearly trying to emulate Baskerville's highly legible designs. A third edition appeared in Wirksworth, a lead-mining town in Derbyshire, as late as 1810, a fact which speaks for the enduring usefulness of this book. Thomas Warren and his son were active as printers in Birmingham between 1727 and 1767, and are known to have published Samuel Johnson's first book, a translation of Jeronimo Lobo's Voyage to Abyssinia.> He was an investor in one of the first mechanised cotton mills of the town and founded the first Birmingham newspaper.

¶ Printing and the Mind of Man n°207 (note) -Tchemerzine V, 545 - McEachern II, 1A, p. 73 - Gagnebin Pléiade IV, 1868 - Cohen 903.

Robert WALPOLE (d. 1810, Clerk of the Privy Council, Ambassador to Portugal), for the War office, vellum, 1 side oblong folio with papered seal and revenue stamp, Court at St James's, 17th November Dunk Halifax, 'the Father of the Colonies', was 1st Lord of Trade, 1748-1761, promoting Nova Scotia, whose capital is named after him (1749), as are counties in Virginia and North Carolina. In 1741 he married the heiress of Sir Thomas Dunk. In 1763 he signed the famous 'Dunk Warrant' to search and apprehend the authors, printers and publishers of Wilkes 'North Briton', No. 45. After the officers arrested 18 people and seized a vast quantity of papers, the warrant was pronounced by the judges to be 'unreasonable search and seizure', and Halifax was mulcted in damages. It has been called 'the most important warrant in Anglo-American law', and the doctine overturning it is closely related to the Fourth Amendment. Robert Walpole's father was Horatio, 1st Baron Walpole of Wolterton, brother of the Prime Minister.

Letter of Marque for a Liverpool Privateer

London: High Court of Admiralty, 1762. No Binding. Good/No Jacket. This document is a Letter of Marque issued for the Liverpool ship "Dulce" a square sterned ship with three masts. Weighing roughly 140 tons and carrying 10 carriage guns each carrying shot of six and four pounds weight and also with swivel guns. Crewed by 30 men this document allowed the ship to "apprehend seize and take the ships vessels and goods belonging to France and Spain". The document is complete but lacks its official seal of the High Admiralty Court. Nevertheless, despite being a little dusty this is an uncommon survival of a document from the days of legalised maritime piracy. An original document licensing a Liverpool Privateer.

Quarto (11 1/2" x 8") bound in original leather binding with raised bands and gilt label to spine. Edited by Antonio Tenreiro. In double column pages issued without map. First published in 1614.Fernão Mendes Pinto was a Portuguese explorer and writer. His exploits are known through the posthumous publication of his memoir Pilgrimage Peregrinação in 1614, an autobiographical work whose truthfulness is nearly impossible to assess. The tale of his adventures was written after the fact, according to Pinto's memories of the events, and for that reason it may be open to doubt as a completely accurate historical source. However, it well documents the impact of the Asian civilizations on the Europeans and constitutes a perfectly realistic analysis of Portuguese action in the Orient, far more realistic than the one made by Luís de Camões in The Lusiads. The most controversial of his claims is that of having been the first European to land in Japan and the introduction of the arquebus. Despite the impossibility of proving these specific assertions, there is little doubt that Pinto was among the first Europeans in Japan, and therefore his account may be considered more reliable than other books describing this period that were written long afterwards. Another controversial claim, that he fought in Java against the Muslims, has been analyzed by various historians. The Dutch historian P. A. Tiele, who wrote in 1880, did not believe Pinto was present during the campaign, but rather that he wrote his information from secondhand sources. Even so, Tiele admits Pinto's account cannot be disregarded because of the lack of alternative information about Javanese history during the time period; despite the doubts over Pinto's accuracy, his viewpoint may represent the only authoritative source in existence. Maurice Collis, a modern expert on Asian affairs who lived in the area for twenty years, holds the opinion that Fernão's accounts, while not entirely true, remain essentially true with respect to the basic events. Because of this Collis considers Pinto's work the most complete European account of 16th century Asian history.Condition:Some worming to the leather and internal gutters, leather scuffed and cracked at back heal corners, rubbing to raised spine areas, spine head chipped away. Red underling in pencil through out else a good copy.

        Considérations sur les corps organisés

First Edition. 2 vignettes title drawn by Picart. Cardboard to Bradel nineteenth black. Parts securities orange calf. Small friction cap. Nice copy. Work on capital generation and embrylogie, one discovers the hypothesis of chromosomes but also the influence of the environment. Bonnet there perfected his thesis that there be any previously latent in nature, and the embryo is already in the seminal fluid, and the generation is only the simple development of the germ, that small, developed by nutrition; the seed already contains everything that will be developed. Although Bonnet develops extensions and consequences of this fundamental premise, it does not prevent it from penetrating the mysteries of embryology and fertilization. The germ theory of seeming a balance between spontaneous generation and the generation, it appears a solution to the theoretical impasse led spontaneous generation that contradict the observations in which Bonnet has great finesse. Cap is not only interested in mammals but largely to plants and earthworms.         Li Regni di Sicilia, e Sardegna, colle adiacenti Isole di Corsica, Elba, Malta. E Liparee, o di Vulcano...

A fine map of southern Italy, Sicily and Sardinia by Homann Heirs. Covers the region from Corsica and the boot of Italy south to Tunisia and North Africa. Includes the island of Malta in the lower right quadrant. Lower left quadrant offers an elaborate title cartouche with a sailing ship, armorial shields of Sicily, Sardinia and Malta, and a warrior, possibly Persus, bearing Medusa shield. The map map was drawn by G. A. Rizzi Zannoni for inclusion in the Homann Heirs -Atlas Compendiarius...a collections of maps printed between 1741 and 1765. Later, the map is also included in many others Homann Heirs Atlases printed until the end of XVIII c. Copper etching, original colors, some light and small stains, generally in good condition.
