Venezia, presso Antonio Zatta, 1761. An Historical Memorial of the Negotiation of France and England, from the 26th of March, 1761, to the 20th of September ... with the vouchers. Translated from the French original, published at Paris by authority

London: D. Wilson, and T. Becket and P.A. Dehondt, 1761. First Edition. Disbound. Very Good. Disbound from a larger volume but still sewn together - lacking endpapers with slight browning to title page, punctures in gutter, probably from an earlier string binding, but otherwise bright and unmarked. The English language edition of the French language original containing the diplomatic correspondence with a connecting narrative by Etienne François relative to ending the Seven Years War. A seminal document in the History of the Americas as the diplomacy involved the ultimate disposition of Canada, Louisiana, the fisheries off Newfoundland, Cape Breton, Guadalupe, much of the West Indies, etc. The English edition is considerably scarcer than the French though it was printed in a number of editions in 1761 (two in London, a 4to and this one, as well as 3 in Dublin - no priority is suggested).         Plate 15 – Tempio antico inventato e disegnato all maniera di quelli (Ancient Temple)

1761 - Giovanni Battista Piranesi Plate 15 – Tempio antico inventato e disegnato all maniera di quelli (Ancient Temple) From Catalogo delle Opere date finora all luce da Gio. Battista Piranesi (The Catalogue of Works published to date by Gio. Battista Piranesi) Rome: c.1761 21 ½” x 16” Giovanni Battista Piranesi was an archeologist, an architect and an engraver. With his sovereign mastery of graphic techniques and powers of invention, he redefined the possibilities of the print medium as only Durer and Rembrandt had done before him. Generations after him would continue to imagine Ancient Rome as portrayed by Piranesi. Piranesi’s oeuvre demonstrates the yearning for classical antiquity felt by an era which was looking back to Ancient Rome in search of its own lost greatness. At the same time, it reflects the dramatic intellectual changes taking place in Europe on the threshold of the modern era.

Recent calf, spine with gilt lettered label. A very charming and attractive work on Entomology, which is most beautifully illustrated with excellent handcoloured plates (depicting 156 various insect species), all drawn and engraved by J.R. Schellenberg. Johann Heinrich Sulzer (1735-1813) was a Swiss entomologist living in Winterthur. (Thanner, Schmutz & Geus. Schellenberg, p. 142).         Scarce Autographed Letter Signed as Minister of the First Congregational Church

New London, CT, 1761. unbound. 2 pages (front and back), 9.5 x 7.5 inches, New London, Connecticut, October 3, 1761. Written to his father Mather Byles Sr., mentioning his new wife Rebecca and the trials and tribulations of life, in part: "...My dear 'Becca's late disorder has occasioned so much confusion in my family; that I have scarcely had time, till now, to set pen to paper. I find the cares of this life naturally increasing; as I am now surrounded with a much greater share of its pleasures & enjoyments. New scenes of social tendencies and solicitude are perpetually opening upon me, and these joined to the labors and anxieties necessary attending the ministerial character...I have still constant reason to acknowledge the peculiar smiles of providence, by which I am distinguished; with a more unreserved fullness of heart, than I once thought consistent with the present state; animated by one comprehensive view, both of my present circumstances, and future prospects..." Unfortunately for Byles Jr., his future prospects were not good. He had a falling out with his church in New London and eventually settled in Massachusetts. A staunch loyalist, following the siege of Boston, he fled to Nova Scotia (to avoid being tarred and feathered), forfeiting all of his property and possessions. Note: The extensive Byles Family Papers housed in the Massachusetts Historical Society claims just six examples of correspondence written by Mather Byles Jr., of which only a single letter is addressed to his father. Harvard University has nothing, being rejected by the family when the college made a bid to acquire the family correspondence in the 1830s. Usual interlocking folds with a small chip at the left margin due to the removal of a wax seal; browning along the uneven right edge. Good condition. Loyalist-Clergyman and a descendent of Increase and Cotton Mather (Salem Witch Trials).

Includes a nearly full page report of this infamous massacre, in part. A considerable fort, called Fort "William-Henry, had been built on the southern edge of the Lake George, in order to command that lake and to cover our frontiers. A garrison of 2500 men defended it. General Webb with about 4000 men was posted at no great distance. No sooner had the French learned that Lord Loudon with the body of the army was gone on the Louisbourg expedition, than they prepared to take advantage of his absence They drew together all the forces which they had at Crown Point, Ticonderoga, and the adjacent posts; they added a considerable body of Canadians, and a greater number of Indians than, they had ever yet employed, the whole made near 8000 men. With these and a very good artillery, Monsieur Montcalm prepared to besiege Fort William Henry. . was in six days surrendered by the advice of General Webb. The garrison marched out with their arms, and engaged not to serve during eighteen months. The French savages paid no regard to the capitulation, but falling upon our men as they marched out, dragged away the little effects they had left, hauling the Indians and Blacks in our service out of their ranks, scalping some, carrying off others, and committing a thousand outrages and barbarities .         Die Kennzeichen der Insekten, nach Anleitung des Königl.

Schwed. Ritters und Leibarzts Karl Linnaeus. Mit einer Vorrede des Herrn Johannes Gessners. Zürich, Heidegger und Comp., 1761. 4to. pp. xxviii, 203, 67, (1), with 1 engraved frontispiece, 7 engraved vignettes in the text and 24 handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary half vellum (very slightly rubbed). Nissen ZBI, 4041; Horn & Schenkling 21755. A very charming and attractive work on Entomology, which is most beautifully illustrated with excellent handcoloured plates (depicting 156 various insect species), all drawn and engraved by J.R. Schellenberg. (Thanner, Schmutz & Geus. Schellenberg, p. 142).         A View of the Church of Notre Dame de la Victoire; Built in Commemoration of the raising of the Siege in 1695, and destroyed in 1759

London: published by Richard Short, to be sold by Thomas Jefferys, 1761. Engraving by A. Benoist, after Short. Titled in French and English. Expert restoration. Sheet size: 14 1/4 x 20 7/8 inches. A fascinating and very rare print from "one of the finest sets of Canadian historical prints ever produced. They are invaluable as records of the effect of the British bombardment during the siege of Quebec. Their careful and detailed draughtsmanship shows internal evidence of their accuracy, and gives a faithful picture of the appearance of the city at the time of its surrender" (Jefferys, 'Samuel Collection' p.35) Richard Short was the purser of H.M.S. Prince of Orange, and served at the siege of Quebec in 1759. He was commanded to make a record of the city by Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Saunders KCB (whose engraved arms or crest appears in the legend beneath each image). Short's drawings were engraved by a number of well-known and highly talented London engravers and the results published by Short himself. The plates, according to Charles Jefferys, "reveal a highly intelligent choice of points of view, a skillful arrangement of lines and masses, and broad treatment of light and shade. In addition to their detailed realism, these engravings are admirable pictorial compositions." (op.cit. p.35). Above all they are the most accurate existing record of early Quebec in general, and in particular of the immediate aftermath of the devastating Naval bombardment of the city. "The engraving gives the church the name 'la Victoire'. Such was its original title, in recognition of the defeat of Phips in 1690. Later it was changed… to 'les Victoires', to commemorate also the destruction of the fleet of Sir Hovendon Walker and the consequent failure of the projected attack on Quebec in 1711" (op.cit. p.38). Contemporary half calf, gilt ornamented spine, marbled sides (backcover hinge weak & spine a bit rubbed). Second original edition, considerably enlarged and of particular value for the entomological nomenclature. "In 1746 Linnaeus finished a Swedish fauna comprehending all groups of animals. He called it 'Fauna Svecica', and it soon became indispensable to the field researcher. Never before had the world seen such a comprehensive and at the same time so detailed local fauna... Linnaeus spurred many followers to go out, with 'Fauna Svecica' in hand, and continue to chart the birds of Sweden. In this he inspired a strong tradition of field ornithology that still allows Sweden to count itself among the world's foremost countries in this respect" (Uppsala University, Linné on line).

Amsterdam, F. Houttuyn, 1761-1785. 3 sections in 37 volumes. Royal-8vo (215 x 135mm). With 296 beautifully handcoloured folded engraved plates. Uniform contemporary half calf, spines with red, green and black gilt lettered labels (some very minor damage to a few labels). The very scarce handcoloured edition of Houttuyn's famous work, based on Linnaeus's 'Systema naturae'. It is often cited under Linnaeus, although it is more a compilation than a translation and influenced largely many similar works in the vernacular in other countries. The edition with the plates coloured must have been quite small as the publishing price of fl. 136.00 was a considerable amount of money at the time. The handcolouring is exceptionally fine. /The work is divided into three parts: 1. Zoology, 18 volumes with 143 plates, subdivided into mammals, birds, amphibians, fishes, insects, worms, molluscs and polypes; 2. Botany, 14 volumes with 105 plates. Minerals, 5 volumes with 48 plates, divided into fossils, stones and minerals. The plates in the mineral section are of great beauty./'An excellent example of this trend towards writing on science in the vernacular with a wide public is provided by Maarten Houttuyn (1720-1798) and his elaborate Dutch 'version' of the twelfth edition of Linnaeaus's 'Systema Naturae', actually a whole independent work, entitled 'Natuurlijke Historie... (1773-1783). Houttuyn was a Dutch physician at Amsterdam... Even though professing to follow the 'Systema naturae', Houttuyn actually opts for a major division of the plant kindom on the basis of a natural system... The taxonomic part of the book is extremely detailed and contains a wealth of incidental information not brought together in this form elsewhery. The total botanical work contains some 8600 pages of text, 105 excellent copper plates illustrating 275 species of plants. The 'Natuurlijke Historie...' as a whole comprises well over 21.500 pages of text ... As such it did much to diffuse Linnaean thought and method among the increasingly growing body of the eighteenth-century intellectuals and 'curiosi'' (Stafleu, Linnaeus and the Linnaeans pp. 174-5)./Houttuyn's work had quite an impact on Japanese natural history. Some set were brought to Japan with VOC ships and for example the famous Japanese botanist Yokusai Iinuma (1783-1865) made ample use of the work for his twenty volume iconography of Japanese plants. //Landwehr. This work on rickets in children is based on careful clinical observation and reading of Glisson. Zeviani criticizes Glisson for calling rickets a new disease and points out Reusner's account in 1582 that clearly describes the ailment though does not name it. He also takes the opportunity to add a new symptom that he observed and at the end of the work suggests a course of treatment.
