Dimostrazione in grand di alcune delle parti facciata. . .

Rome - John Wilton-Ely 511The watermark that is present is number 38 on page 1162 of John Wilton-Ely and is date between 1761 and the 1780sThe plate is from the series "Le Antichita Romane"After over eight years of careful study and excavation Piranesi produced this four-volume work which swiftly established his reputation in archaeology. More than other such antiquarian works, the 250 plates of the Antichita played a dominant role in conveying information, and Piranesi was to develop a whole new range of specialized illustrations in order to reveal aspects of antiquity which had hitherto been largely neglected." (John Wilton-Ely)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed arc

An Account of the War in India, between the English and the French, on the Coast of Coromandel from the Year 1750 to the Year 1760. Together with A Relation of the late Remarkable Events on the Malabar Coast, and Expeditions to Golconda and Surat

Printed for T Jefferys, London 1761 - xxxiii+270+[2]+15+[1]+48+xix+[1] pages 14 of 18 engraved plates, maps (many folding) and index. Quarto (10 1/4" x 8 1/4") in original leather binding. First edition. Richard Owen Cambridge was a British poet. He was educated at Eton and at St John's College, Oxford. Leaving the university without taking a degree, he took up residence at Lincolns Inn in 1737. Four years later he married, and went to live at his country seat of Whitminster, Gloucestershire. In 1751 he removed to Twickenham, where he enjoyed the society of many notable persons. Horace Walpole in his letters makes many jesting allusions to Cambridge in the character of news-monger. His chief work is the Scribleriad (1751), a mock epic poem, the hero of which is the Martinus Scriblerus of Alexander Pope, John Arbuthnot and Jonathan Swift. The poem is preceded by a dissertation on the mock heroic, in which he avows Cervantes as his master. The satire shows considerable learning, and was eagerly read by literary people; but it never became popular, and the allusions, always obscure, have little interest for the present-day reader. He made a valuable contribution to history in his Account of the War in India on the Coast of Coromandel from the year 1750 to 1760 (1761). He had intended to write a history of the rise and progress of British power in India, but this enterprise went no further than this one work, as he found that Robert Orme, who had promised him the use of his papers, contemplated the execution of a similar plan. The Works of Richard Owen Cambridge, includes several pieces never before published. It contains an Account of his Life and Character by his Son, George Owen Cambridge (1803), the Scribleriad, some narrative and satirical poems, and about twenty papers originally published in Edward Moore's paper, The World. His poems are included in Alexander Chalmers' English Poets (1816.         Die Kennzeichen der Insekten, nach Anleitung des Königl.

      - Schwed. Ritters und Leibarzts Karl Linnaeus. Mit einer Vorrede des Herrn Johannes Gessners. Zürich, Heidegger und Comp., 1761. 4to. pp. xxviii, 203, 67, (1), with 1 engraved frontispiece, 7 engraved vignettes in the text and 24 handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary half vellum (very slightly rubbed). Nissen ZBI, 4041; Horn & Schenkling 21755. A very charming and attractive work on Entomology, which is most beautifully illustrated with excellent handcoloured plates (depicting 156 various insect species), all drawn and engraved by J.R. Schellenberg. (Thanner, Schmutz & Geus. Schellenberg, p. 142). Old brown small spot on first plate.

The Diary of George Bubb Dodington

to Frebruary 6, 1761, 1784 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Full calf leather binding with gilt detail to spine. A very scarcefirst editionof thisimportant diary complete with half title page. This copy would benefit from a rebind and is priced accordingly. George Bubb Dodington, 1st Baron Melcombe PC (1691 July 28, 1762) was an English politician and nobleman. Christened simply George Bubb, he acquired the surname Dodington around the time his uncle George Dodington died in 1720 and left him his estate. Enormously rich, he became a friend of Frederick, Prince of Wales, who took advantage of their acquaintance to obtain loans that helped clear his debts, and, on being thrown out of St James's Palace by his father, King George II, moved into a London house belonging to Dodington. Dodington is said to have been involved in a spy-ring, collecting valuable information about Jacobite activities. In 1761, following the accession of Frederick's son to the throne as George III, he was created Baron Melcombe. His diary, published posthumously in 1784 by Henry Penruddocke Wyndham, is a valuable historical source. Condition: The binding is tight and firm and all pages are attached. The front board is detached but present and the rear board is holding by one cord only and will probably fully detach in the post. There is some wear to the extemities includingoverall rubbing and some bumping to the corners. The spine has a couple of black marks and is missing the spine label. Internally the book is generally clean and bright apart from some isolated spotting in some places and some age toning to some sections. There is a decorative copperplate initial to the front pastedown..

ELOISA: Or, a Series of Original Letters. Collected and published by J. J. Rousseau. Translated from the French. In Four Volumes. [containing] A DIALOGUE BETWEEN A MAN Of LETTERS And J. J. ROUSSEAU, On the Subject of ROMANCES. Published since his ELOISA, And Intended as a Preface to that Work. Translated from the French.

Printed for R. Griffithsm at the Dunciad, and T. Becket and P. A. De Hondt, at Tully's Head, in the Strand., London: 1761 - Printer's device to t.p. Rousseau a "Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer of 18th-century Romanticism of French expression. His political philosophy influenced the French Revolution as well as the overall development of modern political, sociological and educational thought."Rousseau's epistolary novel Julie, ou la nouvelle HŽlo•se, was first published 1761, É and this, the first translation into English, was published in the very same year. "The novel's subtitle points to the history of 'HŽlo•se dÕArgenteuil and Peter Abelard', a medieval story of passion and Christian renunciation. The novel was put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Although Rousseau wrote it as a novel, a philosophical theory about authenticity permeates through it, as he explores autonomy and authenticity as moral values. A common interpretation is that Rousseau valued the ethics of authenticity over rational moral principles, as he illlustrates the principle that one should do what is imposed upon him by society only insofar as it would seem congruent with one's 'secret principles' and feelings, being constituent of one's core identity. Thus unauthentic behavior would pave the way to self-destruction." [Wiki]. The novel was extremely popular in its day, touted by some as the top 'best seller' of the century. According to Black, the novel saw 14 English editions by 1800. Today, the first edition somewhat uncommon on the market. Bindings, as to be expected, show some wear, with a leather chip from the spine crown of Vol I, and heel of Vol III. Faint vertical stress lines to spines. One protruding bifolium from Vol I. Withal, a pleasing all-original VG set. Period full calf, with gilt decorated spine(s). Maroon leather title label in second compartment; black leather volume label in third compartment. 12mo. 17 cm x 10 cm. 1st Edition in English (Black. EPISTOLARY FICTION, p. 155). Not listed in Grimm's TRANSLATIONS Of FOREIGN NOVELS. [4], xiv, xli, [1 (blank)], 291, [1 (blank)]; [4], 285, [3]; [2], 295, [1 (blank)]; [2], 252 pp. Dialogue with separate dated title leaf.         Veduta degl'avanzi del sepolcro della famiglia Plauzia sulla via Tiburtina vicino al ponte Lugano due miglia.

Paris 1761 - This print was published between 1806-1833. From the series " Vedute di Roma"Hind 83 (Firmin-Didot Paris edition 3rd state)John Wilton-Ely 216"View of the remains of the Tomb of the Plaitii on the Via Tiburtina. Near the Ponte Lugano, two miles distant from Tivoli" (John Wilton-Ely)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired b

A VIEW OF THE CITY OF BOSTON CAPITAL OF NEW ENGLAND, IN NORTH AMERICA. VUE DE LA VILLE DE BOSTON, CAPITALE DE LA NOUVELLE ANGLETERRE, DANS L'AMÉRIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE. DRAWN ON THE SPOT BY HIS EXCELLENCY, GOVERNOR POWNALL.

London: Printed for John Bowles, Robert Sayer, Thomas Jefferys, Carington Bowles and Henry Parker, [nd, but ca. 1761]. - Copper engraving by P.C. Canot after a painting by Pugh from a design by Pownall. Sheet size: 14 1/4 x 20 3/8 inches. Expert repairs, trimmed to the plate mark. Matted. An important image of colonial Boston from the famous and very rare SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA series. Pownall's drawing of Boston, here ably engraved by Peter Charles Canot (1710-77), was one of six prints in the SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA series that were based on Pownall's sketches. This particular image was worked up into a painting by Pugh, and it was from this that the engraving was made by Canot. The complete SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA (with a total of twenty-eight plates) is a legendary rarity: no copies are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty years. Individual prints are therefore all that the collector can hope for, and the present image is one of the most important. Governor Thomas Pownall, one of the few sympathetic colonial governors in North America, was also an artist, author, and mapmaker. He first came to America as secretary of the governor of New York, Sir Danvers Osborn, in 1753, who committed suicide a few days after arriving. Pownall stayed on in America and became deeply involved in colonial politics during these critical years (the French and Indian War). He contributed to and supported Pitt's strategy in the war against the French and was appointed governor of Massachusetts, replacing Shirley, in August 1757. He was at first very popular, energetically raising troops and prosecuting the war with the French; but political rivalry and objections to his own rather free lifestyle and manners led to his retirement from the position at his own request, and he returned to England in 1760. He remained a staunch supporter of the American causes as they arose in the 1760s. Interestingly, he was very much in favor of emancipation of the slaves in America. Pownall was a long-time friend of Benjamin Franklin.

London: J. Buckland -, 1761 - Gibbons (1720-1785), an Independent minister, wrote an important biography of Issac Watts, kept an entertaining diary of his active London life, and wrote poetry and hymns. Like the present volume, many of his publications were funeral sermons - this one preached on the death of the Reverend Samuel Davies (1723-1761), a Presbyterian minister from Delaware. Davies was instrumental in the founding of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). He spent eleven months in England raising money to build Nassau-Hall, the first permanent building on campus. Both Davies and Gibbons were prominent dissenters from Anglican orthodoxy and it is likely that they would have met during Davies' fund-raising mission to England. They evidently carried on a correspondence, which Gibbons quotes from in his sermon. Davies served as the fourth president of the college until his early death at 37. ESTC lists three 1761 editions - one with p. 31 paginated (as in this copy), one without pagination, and a third with a variant imprint for sale in America (PRINCETON UNIVERSITY) First edition, state unknown. 8vo. 31, [1, ad for books "Published by the Rev. Mr Thomas Gibbons"] pp. Bound in late 19th century blue quarter calf and marbled boards, binding rubbed, small piece from A2 costing a few words. Felcone 99; ESTC N47977 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
