A VIEW OF THE CITY OF BOSTON CAPITAL OF NEW ENGLAND, IN NORTH AMERICA. VUE DE LA VILLE DE BOSTON, CAPITALE DE LA NOUVELLE ANGLETERRE, DANS L'AMÉRIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE. DRAWN ON THE SPOT BY HIS EXCELLENCY, GOVERNOR POWNALL.

London: Printed for John Bowles, Robert Sayer, Thomas Jefferys, Carington Bowles and Henry Parker, [nd, but ca. 1761]. - Copper engraving by P.C. Canot after a painting by Pugh from a design by Pownall. Sheet size: 14 1/4 x 20 3/8 inches. Expert repairs, trimmed to the plate mark. Matted. An important image of colonial Boston from the famous and very rare SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA series. Pownall's drawing of Boston, here ably engraved by Peter Charles Canot (1710-77), was one of six prints in the SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA series that were based on Pownall's sketches. This particular image was worked up into a painting by Pugh, and it was from this that the engraving was made by Canot. The complete SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA (with a total of twenty-eight plates) is a legendary rarity: no copies are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty years. Individual prints are therefore all that the collector can hope for, and the present image is one of the most important. Governor Thomas Pownall, one of the few sympathetic colonial governors in North America, was also an artist, author, and mapmaker. He first came to America as secretary of the governor of New York, Sir Danvers Osborn, in 1753, who committed suicide a few days after arriving. Pownall stayed on in America and became deeply involved in colonial politics during these critical years (the French and Indian War). He contributed to and supported Pitt's strategy in the war against the French and was appointed governor of Massachusetts, replacing Shirley, in August 1757. He was at first very popular, energetically raising troops and prosecuting the war with the French; but political rivalry and objections to his own rather free lifestyle and manners led to his retirement from the position at his own request, and he returned to England in 1760. He remained a staunch supporter of the American causes as they arose in the 1760s. Interestingly, he was very much in favor of emancipation of the slaves in America. Pownall was a long-time friend of Benjamin Franklin.

Divine Conduct Vindicated, or The Operations of God shown to be the Operations of Wisdom: in the substance of two discourses, preached at Haberdashers-Hall, London, March 29, 1761; occasioned by the decease of the Rev. Mr. Samuel Davies, M.A. and president of the College of Nassau- Hall in New-Jersey, February 4, 1761 - in which are contained some memoirs of Mr. Davies, and some extracts from his Letters

London: J. Buckland -, 1761 - Gibbons (1720-1785), an Independent minister, wrote an important biography of Issac Watts, kept an entertaining diary of his active London life, and wrote poetry and hymns. Like the present volume, many of his publications were funeral sermons - this one preached on the death of the Reverend Samuel Davies (1723-1761), a Presbyterian minister from Delaware. Davies was instrumental in the founding of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). He spent eleven months in England raising money to build Nassau-Hall, the first permanent building on campus. Both Davies and Gibbons were prominent dissenters from Anglican orthodoxy and it is likely that they would have met during Davies' fund-raising mission to England. They evidently carried on a correspondence, which Gibbons quotes from in his sermon. Davies served as the fourth president of the college until his early death at 37. ESTC lists three 1761 editions - one with p. 31 paginated (as in this copy), one without pagination, and a third with a variant imprint for sale in America (PRINCETON UNIVERSITY) First edition, state unknown. 8vo. 31, [1, ad for books "Published by the Rev. Mr Thomas Gibbons"] pp. Bound in late 19th century blue quarter calf and marbled boards, binding rubbed, small piece from A2 costing a few words.         DISCURSO HISTORICO JURIDICO DEL ORIGEN, FUNDACION, REEDIFICACION, DERECHOS, Y EXENCIONES DEL HOSPITAL DE SAN LAZARO DE LIMA.

Lima: Oficina de los Huerphanos, . 1761 - [34],272pp. Several errors in pagination. Small quarto. Contemporary vellum with pigskin ties, lettered on spine. Very minor soiling, but generally quite bright and fresh internally. Near fine. The first edition of this interesting medical work. The work refers to the history and foundation of the Hospital de San Lazaro (founded 1563), which was devoted to "take [in] the leprous who are not slaves." It provides a complete description of the relations between the Church and the Hospital, as well as medical data about leprosy and its spread. Curiously enough, chapter six is dedicated to bullfighting in Peru, presumably due to the fact that bullfighting was a way of financing the Hospital's expenses. Only a handful of copies on OCLC. SABIN 7462. MEDINA, LIMA 1169. PALAU 34802. OCLC 14313147.

An Unfortunate Mother's Advice to her Absent Daughters; in a Letter to Miss Pennington

London: Printed by S. Chandler, and sold by W. Bristow and C. Etherington, York,, 1761. Octavo (207 × 120 mm) Newly bound in late eighteenth-century marbled paper wraps. Half-title bound in, signed in the edition on the last leaf. Somewhat browned, but sound. This first edition of three in the same year is decidedly uncommon, ESTC lists just a dozen copies, six of them in the UK. What little is known of Lady Pennington is drawn from the present work, "a curious combination of conduct manual and scandalous memoir" (ODNB). She married Sir Joseph Pennington of Water Hall, Yorkshire, in 1746, and the couple separated some twelve years later for reasons not made entirely clear. It seems that Lady Sarah attributed the rift to her publicly coquettish behaviour, Sir Joseph, backed by eighteenth-century law, denied his wife access to her daughters and attempted to deprive her of a small inheritance, reducing to "the expedient of communicating with her daughters through the highly public form of a published letter … Her defensive tone and language of injured innocence reflect that of scandal memoirists such as Laetitia Pilkington, and like her, Pennington attributes much of her misery to being privately virtuous but publicly coquettish, and thereby leaving herself open to wilful, malicious misconstruction". It is remarkable that in spite of the social disgrace of her separation, and the fact that she published an account of the scandal, she died with a reputation for virtue and injured innocence, rather than that of a sexually fallen woman deserving of such deserts. On her death in 1783 The Gentleman's Magazine, in a prominent example, remarked on her "extraordinary abilities … piety, charity and benevolence, united to that patient and unreserved resignation with which she sustained a series of very severe and uncommon afflictions" (GM, LIII, 2, p. 978).

London: Printed for W. Sandby, 1761. First edition. "Mordant, of whose life nothing is known, makes the usual excuse for issuing his book, though why an excuse should be necessary puzzles me; there was no recent good book on the subject, although Mr. Lawrence had in some measure treated of it before him. Mordant admits that Lawrence was a very able man to have handled the subject in a full and general way and to advantage, but his reflections and observations were too few and concise. Mordant cast his own book in alphabetical form, and includes trees, animals, crops, building, &c., making an effective and useful dictionary for landowner and steward alike. The second volume contains a large number of diverse tables for ready-reckoning areas, timber, board measure, &c., and a comprehensive set of specimen documents like leases, re-leases, and so on."-Fussell, II, p. 51. Fine set of a scarce book, with the signature of "Mr. Lewis Borthwick, 1791" on front paste-down of Vol. I and on first title. .

Contemporary light brown mottled calf, richly gold-tooled covers.

Koeman, Tir 8; Pouls, De Landmeter, pp. 231-232. Attractive topographical work on Zeeland. Despite the title "atlas," it contains only 6 maps and 6 plans, whereas the remaining plates contain views and portraits. The maps include a general map of Zeeland, showing all the islands, and 5 maps of individual islands. These latter maps are in a beautiful contemporary hand-colouring. According to the table of contents, there is a plate showing people digging peat following the portrait of J. Verheye (Koeman, Tir 8/60). However Koeman does not list this view in his description. It is present in our copy. The extra, full-page, portrait shows Samuël Radermacher, mayor of Middelburg, who died in 1761. His portrait by Houbraken is signed 1766, that is, after the publication of the present atlas.View of Middelburg loose from stub, some maps slightly browned. An excellently preserved copy of this fine topography of Zeeland, with attractive maps, in a fine binding.

      T. Osborne [etc], London 1761 - Four volumes, octavo, with a number of oval portraits of naval figures, and six good folding engraved maps by Thomas Jefferys (Europe, Africa, Madagascar & Zanzibar, Asia, North America, South America); a fine crisp set in a handsome contemporary calf binding, spines gilt in compartments between raised bands, red edges. Naval history. Third edition: a really attractive set of a good early edition of this standard work, a comprehensive naval history of Great Britain first published in the 1740s, which remained in print in various forms until the late 19th century. Campbell was quite admired by Dr. Johnson. He told Boswell that he once drank thirteen bottles of port at a sitting (hard to imagine him standing), and Johnson commented approvingly that 'he has not been in the inside of a church for many years; but he never passes a church without pulling off his hat.         Strive not Tragedy nor Comedy to Engross a Garrick, who to your Noblest Characters does Equal Honour

Published by R. H. Laurie; 53 Fleet Street, and Bowles & Carver, London 1761 - One of the most famous portraits of the actor David Garrick by Sir Joshua Reynolds. David Garrick (1717-1779) was perhaps the most influential actor in the English theater. He successfully took on all aspects of theatrical production, including actor, manager, playwright, publicist and theatre advocate. He displayed an amazing range by convincingly playing parts in every genre from comedy to tragedy, history to farce. From 1747 until his retirement in 1776, he was the manager of Drury Lane, where he initiated many improvements: he introduced concealed stage lighting, removed spectators from the stage, and cultivated a naturalistic style of acting. Garrick was acutely conscious of the value of pictures as advertisements. He sat for every painter of note, many of whom are now little more than names. He was painted in oils and in watercolours, drawn in pencil and in pastels, modelled in wax and in terracotta; his likeness even appeared on medals, Wedgewood china, and playing-cards. This portrait by his friend Reynolds demonstrates in a mildly humorous way the actor's talents and character; posed between Tragedy and Comedy Garrick is depicted the master of both. Garrick's broad smile, and Tragedy's melodramatic stance, note the dagger at her waist, favor Comedy. Reynolds' painting was a huge public success and inspired many prints and paintings, pirated prints of the image even made their way to the streets of Paris. The popularity of this image is a testimony to Garrick's fame and to Reynolds' talent. (University of Florida website, Penny) An interesting derivative of this scene is Shakespeare Nursed by Tragedy and Comedy , a beautiful stipple engraving based on a painting by Romney. Penny, Reynolds 42; Chaloner Smith, British Mezzotinto Portraits 31, this state not recorded; Russell, English Mezzotint Portraits, and their States 31, this state not recorded; Hamilton, Catalogue Raisonné of the Engraved Works of Sir Joshua Renolds p.29; Lennox-Boyd, Theatre: the Age of Garrick p.108; O'Donoghue, Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits. in the British Museum 52. Mezzotint. New state, ii/ii with the publication line altered. Inscription reads as follows: " J. Reynolds pinx.**Cha, Corbutt fecit./ Strive not TRAGEDY nor COMEDY to Engross a GARRICK, who to your NOBLEST CHARACTER does EQUAL HONOUR./ Reddere Personae scit convenientia cuique./ Published by R.H.LAURIE; 53 Fleet Street, and ** BOWLES & CARVER, St. Pauls Church Yard London, Price 6s.". In good condition apart from a small section of paper loss in the upper margin not extending into the image, and two small skillfully mended tears on the bottom margin.         Le Voyageur philosophe dans un Pays inconnu aux Habitans de la Terre . Multa incredibilia vera, Multa credibilia falsa, par Mr. De Listonai

Amsterdam: 'depens de l'editeur,', 1761. Two volumes, octavo, titles printed in black and red; contemporary mottled calf, spines ornately gilt in compartments between raised bands (slightly worn), tan morocco title and number labels (number on volume two missing). First edition of a scarce lunar utopia. This early tale of space-travel is also a wonderful Enlightenment document of faith in the perfect society. Little is known about the author, but his work is an extended meditation on the themes of society and the natural. Interestingly, the narrator seeks to establish his credentials as man of the world and experienced traveller by claiming to have journeyed to many parts of the world, including a couple of abortive attempts 'de débarquer dans les Terres Australes'. Given this pedigree, it can come as no surprise to the reader that the Voyager so easily journeys to the moon, nor that he is capable of giving such a wonderfully thorough account of Selenite society. Having discussed their morals, advances in science and all-round goodness, the traveller sadly takes his leave, happy only in that all of the notes he has taken will be of such inestimable use 'pour l'agrément, l'utilité & le bonheur de l'humanité, dans le dessein d'en enrichir ma Patrie'.

1761. Canonibus Traduntur. Romae, Expensis Jo: Baptistae Novelli, 1761. 2 parts in one volume. 348 & 307pp. Large 4to. Contemporary vellum binding (some light foxing throughout). Edges stained dark blue. Pope Benedict XIV (Prospero Laurenzo Lambertini - 1675-1758) was Pope from 1740 onwards. The Catholic Encyclopedia says: "Benedict XIV is best known to history as a student and scholar. Though by no means a genius, his enormous application coupled with more than ordinary cleverness of mind made him one of the most erudite men of his time and give him the distinction of being perhaps the greatest scholar among the popes... A temporal sovereign Benedict governed the States of the Church with wisdom and moderation and introduced many reforms for the purpose of diminishing abuse and promoting the happiness and prosperity of the people... In purely spiritual matters the influence of Benedict left a lasting impression on the entire Church and its administration. His Bulls and Encyclicals which have played such an important part in defining and clarifying obscure and difficult points of ecclesiastical law, were learned treatises full of wisdom and scholarship... In order that the clergy should not be deficient in ecclesiastical and historical science, and that they might not lack opportunity to profit by the intellectual progress of the period, he founded at Rome four academies for the study of Roman antiquities, Christian antiquities, the history of the Church and the councils, and the history of canon law and liturgy. He also established a Christian museum, and commissioned Joseph Assemani to prepare a catalogue of the manuscripts in the Vatican Library, which he enriched by the purchase of the Ottobonian library containing 3,300 MSS of unique value and importance... To his subjects Benedict was an idol. If they complained at times that he wrote too much and governed them too little they all agreed that he spoke well and wittily, and his jokes and bon mots were the delight of Rome... Great as a man, a scholar, an administrator and a priest, Benedict's claim to immortality rests principally on his admirable ecclesiastical writings."
