"Christopher Polhem, byname of Christopher Polhammer (born December 18, 1661, Gotland, Sweden-died August 30/31, 1751, Stockholm?), Swedish mechanical and mining engineer. From 1693 to 1709 he devised water-powered machinery that mechanized operations at the great Falun copper mine. In 1704 he built a factory in Stjaernsund that used division of labour, hoists, and conveyor belts to minimize manual labour, anticipating mass-production techniques later adopted in America and England. His alphabet of machines demonstrated the basic elements of mechanism used by later machine builders. His rolling mill was later adapted by Henry Cort to the production of wrought iron in England."

S.l. [Geneve]: S.n. [Cramer], 1761. Fine. S.n. [Cramer], S.l. [Geneve] 1761-1763, 8 tomes en 8 Vol. in-8 (11,5x20cm), reliés. - Edition partly original. This is the latest edition to carry the title Essay on the general history (that of 1764 only corrected the faults reported to the errata) before choosing the final title by Voltaire in the edition of 1771: Test on manners and the spirit of nations. The edition volumes formed the XI to XVIII of the complete works, it has obviously been edited separately but was part of the corpus of Voltaire's works published by Cramer. Bound in full marbled contemporary sheepskin. Back with nerves decorated. 2 parts of title and volume number in red morocco for each volume. Amateur small restorations to the head caps of volumes I, II, II, V, VI, VII and VII and two tail caps. Most corners bumped.

Multa incredibilia vera. Multa credibilia falsa

'depens de l'editeur,', Amsterdam 1761 - Two volumes, duodecimo, with bookplates from the 'Bibliotheque de Monspey'; elegant volumes in mottled sheep, with banded and gilt panelled spine, some wear to front joints, and chipping at extremities of the spine. First edition of a scarce lunar utopia. This early tale of space-travel is in fact a wonderful Enlightenment document of faith in the perfect society.Little is known about the author, but his work is an extended meditation on Enlightenment themes of society and the natural. Interestingly, the narrator seeks to establish his credentials as man of the world and experienced traveller by claiming to have journeyed to many parts of the world, including a couple of abortive attempts 'de débarquer dans les Terres Australes.' Given this pedigree, it can come as no surprise to the reader that the Voyager so easily journeys to the moon, nor that he is capable of giving such a wonderfully thorough account of Selenite society. The lunar city Sélénopolis displays the standard traits of symmetry and order, which are chronicled with uncritical sincerity by the awe-struck visitor: 'La comparaison de l'état social et de l'état naturel: dans l'absence du mien et du tien, il n'y a pas de vice, pas de crime, pas de crainte de la mort? C'est le Siècle des Lumières parfaitement réalisé' (Hartig & Soboul, Pour une histoire de l'utopie en France).Having discussed their morals, advances in science and all-round goodness, the traveller sadly takes his leave, happy only in that all of the notes he has taken will be of such inestimable use 'pour l'agrément, l'utilité & le bonheur de l'humanité, dans le dessein d'en enrichir ma Patrie'. The wraps are age discolored. The deckled page edges are dusty. The interior is tight and clean. Most pages are uncut. A very early treatise on the diseases and lameness of horses by William Osmer. Little is known of Osmer other than that he was a veterinary surgeon in London; "he leaves the impression that he was self-taught and depended upon La Fosse. He never refers to any London practitioner, nor does he imitate the custom of his day in routinely criticising the writings of others". 300 pages. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

A rare royal cedula issued by Charles III, King of Spain, confirming his Catholic faith and directing secular and religious officials throughout the Spanish Indies to promulgate a papal text concerning the Virgin Mary. This copy of the decree is foliated with, as intended, Pope Clement XIV's eight-page text. Originally delivered in Rome on Nov. 10, 1760 and translated into Spanish on Feb. 10, 1761, the papal text is here printed in parallel Latin and Spanish, with statements in print and manuscript testifying to the authenticity of the text and the translation. A paper seal of authenticity accompanies the apostolic notary's signature. Both the King's decree and the Papal brief were to be distributed to the viceroys of New Spain, Peru, and New Granada as well as presidents, governors, archbishops, bishops, and prelates throughout the Spanish Indies. These government and religious officials were ordered to ensure the distribution of the royal decree and accompanying papal text, and the continued adulation of the mystery of the cult of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. This copy of the royal decree, accomplished in manuscript at Aranjuez, Spain on April 16, 1771, is signed by Juan Manuel Crespo, with the additional annotation: "Yo El Rey. Por mandado del Rey Nuestro Señor." A manuscript inscription on the blank recto of the integral blank leaf of the first title, dated Feb. 27, 1762, confirms that the decree and accompanying text had been reviewed by the President and other high officials in Santiago de Chile. A rare proclamation ordering the dissemination of a specific papal text throughout the Americas, complete with the accompanying text as issued and additional manuscript inscriptions certifying its receipt in Santiago de Chile. The combination of such a proclamation, accompanied by the cited text itself as issued, is remarkably rare. Not on OCLC, Medina (BHA), or Palau.

Frankfurt/M., Johann Gottlieb Garbe, 1761. Meusebach I 2107). Gutes Exemplar. – Goed. IV/I 654, 1. Hayn/G. VIII 115.
