Nagler 12, Nr. 23; vgl. Andresen I, Nr. 58). Januar.1822 in Rom starb.

Sig. Marchese Mario Capra. 119, [1] pp. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of the dedicatee Marchese Mario Capra, an engraved title-page vignette, 36 plates engraved by Cristoforo dell'Acqua after drawings by the Author, of which 32 are folding and four are full-page, plus woodcut head- and tailpieces, and woodcut initials in various designs and sizes. 4to., 225 x 170 mm, bound in Italian nineteenth-century half vellum over marbled paper boards, author and title gilt on red morocco spine label. In Vicenza: Giovambattista Vendramini Mosca, 1761. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition. A guide to Vicenza presented in dialog between two characters, Leandro the local and Guglielmo (William) from London. The text is heavily illustrated with plates to scale in Vicentine and English feet, reproducing architecture by Andrea Palladio including two superb interior views of the Teatro Olimpico, and designs by Vincenzo Scamozzi, whose surname Bertotti added to his own after winning a contest for a Scamozzi scholarship. Thanks to the generous patronage of Marchese Mario Capra, to whom this work is dedicated, Bertotti-Scamozzi (1719-90) had an excellent education in architecture and a successful career; J.J. Volkmann, author of the Historische-Kritische Nachrichten von Italien (Leipzig, 1770-71), recommended this very text to Goethe as one of the best on Italian cities, and the Author's four-volume Fabbriche ed i disegni di Andrea Palladio (Vicenza, 1776-83), financed by the dwindling coffers of the Scamozzi prize, remains a seminal study of Palladian architecture. This beautiful book is rare enough that a facsimile edition was printed of it in 1968. Evidence of former bookplate on front pastedown. Repair to short tear at fore-edge of one leaf, and two folding plates (VII, VIII) repaired, else a fine copy. Millard, Italian 19. Berlin Katalog 2709. Fowler 43. RIBA, Early Printed Books 262. The 1761 Baskerville Juvenal is recognized as one of the great printings of a classical author, and this is a very fine copy in French red morocco. Indeed, this deluxe French binding, and its distinguished French provenance, demonstrate the high regard in which French collectors held this great English printer/publisher. Lowndes simply describes it as "a most beautiful edition." This copy has the cancels as per Gaskell in corrected state. Tips of binding slightly worn at the fore-corners.

Frankfurt/M., Johann Gottlieb Garbe, 1761.. . Meusebach I 2107). Gutes Exemplar. - Goed. IV/I 654, 1. Hayn/G. VIII 115.

Imperial folio (489 x 375 mm). VIII,+ 90 pp.+ 73 engr. plates (with 117 illustrations), and with 11 engr. vignettes in the text. Contemporary half calf, richly gilt spine with raised bands and green label, red morocco imitation paper boards. Wear to upper joints. From the library of the Swedish artist Carl G. Fehrman, with his discret black library stamp on the title leaf.Cicognara 3592. Brunet I, 646. Not in Garcia or Furchheim. First edition of Jean Barbault's (1705-66) large work on ancient monuments in Rome, which also contains three plates with wall paintings from Herculaneum, copied after "L'Antichita di Ercolano". This work, and his work on the modern monuments of Rome, are attempts to challenge Piranesi's "La Vedute di Roma", published at the same time. At least 26 of the extra plates at the end, and perhaps also the map of Rome, are from Joachim von Sandrart's "Des altern und neuen Roms Schau-Platz", Nürnberg 1685. The remaining plates are by various artists, for example Israel Silvestre, Adam Perelle and Piranesi. The Swedish engraver and medal maker Carl G. Fehrman (1746-98) came to Rome in 1775 and stayed there together with Sergel, Masreliez and other Swedish artists until he returned to Sweden in 1778
