        Dictionnaire Portatif De La Langue Francoise Extrait Du Grand Dictionnaire De Pierre Richelet; George Washington's Copy - Together with A Catalogue of the Washington Collection in the Boston Athenaeum

      Chez Pierre Bruyset - Ponthus, Lyon 1761 - President George Washington's copy, with his bookplate which was restruck before 1863, from the original copper plate. "The inventory of Washington's books made at the time of his death.shows that his library then numbered about nine hundred volumes. These under his will became the property of his nephew Judge Bushrod Washington, who also inherited his papers and the Mansion House of Mount Vernon. Here Judge Washington lived and added to General Washington's library a part at least of his own books. In his will in 1826, he provided as follows: 'All the papers and letter books devised to me by my uncle, Gen'l Washington, as well as the books in my study, other than law books, I give to my nephew Geo. C. Washington; the books in the cases in the dining-room, I give to my nephew John A. Washington.' In the inventory of his estate are these items: In the dining-room, 468 vols. miscellaneous works left to John A. Washington, 658 vols. of miscellaneous works left to Geo. C. Washington, 1125 N. of miscel. Pamphlets left Geo. C. Washington, beside 169 vols. of State papers, 22 vols. of Journals of Congress and 649 vols. of Law Books, 22 law pamphlets. These latter were destined for Bushrod Washington Herbert , the son of a niece, in case he should be trained for the law. Mount Vernon was next occupied by John A. Washington. The books left to George C. Washington remained there for many years, but in 1847 or 1848, a considerable portion of them, perhaps all that remained, were sold to Henry Stevens, the bookseller. Mr. Stevens announced his intention of sending them over to the British Museum. To prevent this and to secure them for Boston a number of Boston and Cambridge men, particularly Prof. Jared Sparks, Prof. Andrews Norton, Mr. George Livermore, and Mr. Charles Eliot Norton.(raised $3,800 to purchase them from Stevens). This amount and $450 beside was collected, the Athenaeum itself contributing $500; and at a meeting of the subscribers it was voted to place the books permanently in the Boston Athenaeum.The remainder of Washington's library has been scattered, and no large number of his books now exists in any one place beside the Boston Athenaeum. What became of the rest of the books left to George C. Washington can only be conjectured. Those given to John A. Washington passed to his son John A. Washington, and then to his son Lawrence Washington, of Alexandria, Va.other sales have given an opportunity to book collectors to bid for books which once belonged to Washington. The titles of the Catalogues of these sales will be found on pp. 470-475 of this volume. A sale of books claiming to be from Washington's library, but having spurious book-plates, took place in Washington, in 1863." The present title is one of those. So the "spurious" bookplate was struck by the Washington family, from the original copper plate and placed into some of the books in the collection - so to call it "spurious" is a misnomer. The collection of General Washington, in the Boston Athenaeum contains 13 volumes with this bookplate - they were purchased in Washington in 1863 (see page 565 of "A Catalogue of the Washington Collection in the Boston Athenaeum"). 12mo, 775 pages; contemporary calf, marbled end papers, red leather lettering piece on spine; all edges stained red. Internally very good; binding shows considerable wear. Bookplate of George Washington on front pastedown (a 19th century restrike from the original copper plate). Housed in a contemporary full leather box, with a slide-off top.

        De sedibus et causis morborum per anatomen indagatis.

      ex Typographia Remondiniana,, Venezia 1761 - 2 tomi in un volume in folio (mm 365x234). Pagg. XCVI, 298; 452, testo su due colonne. Ritratto dell'autore inciso in rame all'antiporta da Jean Renard (pseudonimo di Giovanni Volpato), frontespizio del primo tomo in rosso e nero con vignetta allegorica calcografica, ripetuta al secondo frontespizio. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida con titoli entro tassello in marocchino rosso (parzialmente mancante) al dorso, tagli spruzzati di rosso.Edizione originale dell'opera più importante del Morgagni (1682 -1771), che gli valse il titolo di padre dell'anatomia patologica. Nel De sedibus, considerato ancora oggi uno dei capisaldi della letteratura medica, viene effettuata una ricerca accurata e ordinata delle varie malattie, studiandone anche la storia, i sintomi e le possibili cure. In questo enorme e vasto lavoro l'autore, riporta in dettaglio i suoi risultati in 640 dissezioni. In 70 lettere sono esaminati e descritti 700 casi, in cui vengono confrontati i dati clinici con i risultati delle autopsie mettendo così in correlazione lo studio dell'anatomia con quello della patologia "sedi e cause della malattia studiate per mezzo di anatomia"; introduce ed insiste sul concetto che la diagnosi, la prognosi ed il trattamento della malattia devono essere basati su una comprensione esatta delle mutazioni patologiche nelle strutture anatomiche. Inoltre le patologie descritte sono innumerevoli, alcune mai indagate prima, e studiate partendo appunto, dal sintomo, fino a risalire all'organo colpito. Questo lavoro gli richiese anni di preparazione (Morgagni aveva 79 anni quando uscì in prima edizione) e costituisce uno dei fondamenti dell'anatomia patologica moderna. Bell'esemplare genuino, tracce di sporco superficiale e qualche macchiolina al piatto anteriore. Internamente lievissime sporadiche fioriture. Dibner, 125; Garrison-Morton, 2276:"One of the most important works in the history of medicine, Morgagni was the true founder of modern pathological anatomy"; Norman, 1547; PMM, 206: "This book [.] contained reports on an extensive series of post mortems performed by Himself, his teacher, Valsalva, and other members of his circle. By comparing the clinical symptoms with the post mortem findings Morgagni laid the foundation of pathological anatomy"; Wellcome IV, 178. Graesse IV, 607; Blake 312; Waller 6675; Printing and the Mind of Man 206; Heirs of Hippocrates; Hirsch/Hübotter IV, 265; Notable Medical Books:"One of the most important in the history of medicine; Die meisten italienischen Anatomen des 18. Jahrhunderts waren seine Schüler, darunter der große Scarpa. Tomus tertius: tertium contines librum quo agitur de morbis imi ventris. Meilenstein der Gastroenterologie !       Heidegger und Co., Zürich 1761 - 2 Teile in 1 Band. Zürich, Heidegger und Co., 1761. 20,3x14,8 cm. XXVIII, 203 S., 67, (1) S. ("Erklärungs-Tafeln ."). Thanner 1242-1273. - Horn-Sch. 21 755. - Nissen, ZBI, 4041. - Lonchamp 2842 (erwähnt irrigerweise 52 Taf.). - Pfeiffer in: Philobiblon IX (1936), S. 57 und Nr. 50. - Sehr schönes und komplettes Exemplar dieses ersten Insektenwerks des Winterthurer Arztes und Entomologen Johann Heinrich Sulzer. Die Tafeln bilden Schellenbergs ersten grossen Auftrag für ein entomologisches Buch, dem dann noch weitere nachfolgen sollten. Beeinflusst wurden Schellenbergs Insektenabbildungen von Johann August Roesel von Rosenhofs 1740 bis 1761 publizierten „Insecten-Belustigungen". Sulzers Text ist eine freie Übersetzung von Carl von Linnées entsprechenden Texten, „wobei meine Veränderungen und Zusätze untergeschoben sind" (Sulzer, S. XXI). Schellenberger kolorierte auch einige wenige Exemplare selbst. Entzückend sind Schellenbergs Textvignetten am Kopf der einzelnen Kapitel. Der Künstler verdeutlicht damit anhand von Szenen mit Putti und Rieseninsekten die Charakteristika der in dem zugehörigen Kapitel behandelten Insektenklassen in heiterer und spielerischer Weise. - (Rücken geringfügig berieben, Ecken bestossen.         Considerations Concerning the First Formation of Languages." In: The Philological Miscellany;

      [London:] Printed for the Editor; and sold by T. Beckett and P. A. Dehondt,, 1761. consisting of Select Essays from the Memoirs of the Academy of Belles Lettres at Paris, and other foreign Academies. Translated into English. With Original Pieces by the most Eminent Writers of our own Country. Vol I. Octavo (212 × 125 mm). Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, flat spine decorated gilt, red morocco label. Housed in a brown flat back cloth box. Ownership inscription (partly faded) of Elizabeth A. Kei[th] to front free endpaper. Joints, spine ends and corners skilfully restored, occasional faint spotting and the odd stain, pencil cross marks to a few margins; a very good copy. Rare first edition of The Philological Miscellany, all published, containing the first appearance in print of Adam Smith's "Considerations concerning the first formation of Languages, and the different genius of original and compounded Languages" (pp. 440-79), originally part of Smith's University Lectures on Rhetoric, a work of which Smith was, according to Dugald Stewart, proud: "It is an essay of great ingenuity, and on which the author himself set a high value." According to the editor of the Glasgow edition of Smith's works "it is a masterpiece of lucid exposition which any summary can only blur. Stewart's comments (Account of the Life and Writings of Adam Smith II. 44-56) are the most perceptive ever made on it. He saw that its value lies, not in the possible accuracy of the opinions, but in its being a specimen of an entirely modern kind of inquiry 'which seems, in a peculiar degree, to have interested Mr Smith's curiosity'" (Introduction to the Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres). "There is a footnote to the story of Smith's labours in perfecting an original and provocative system of morals. In 1761 he had published an extended version of his lecture on the origins of language in a little-known and short-lived review called the Philological Miscellany under the title 'Considerations Concerning the First Formation of Languages'. One can see why he wanted to do so. His theory of morals and the elaborate discussion of the process of sympathetic exchange on which it was based had presupposed the theory of language on which his theory of rhetoric was based. The theory of language he had presented to his Edinburgh and Glasgow students had been designed to show that language was essentially a vehicle for communication which had a history that was probably as old as civilization. Not only was this a subject of obvious relevance to an understanding of the workings of sympathy, it was also a means of addressing Rousseau's objection that 'not even our new grammarians' (he has Condillac in mind) could convince him that all the complexities of modern grammar could be explained in naturalistic terms. Smith disagreed. His expanded account of the theory of language was designed to show how this could be achieved by using a proper, Humean theory of the imagination. It completed his critique of Rousseau's theory of sociability and was reprinted in the third edition of the Theory of Moral Sentiments of 1763 [sic] and in every subsequent edition published in his lifetime." (Phillipson, pp. 165-166). The Miscellany was probably edited by William Rose of Kew, editor of The Historical Miscellany (published by Cadell), The Moral Miscellany, and The Poetical Miscellany, both published by Beckett and Dehondt. Rose conducted a school at Kew and later at Chiswick. He was one of Millar's literary advisers, and Strahan and Cadell were his executors (see DNB). Smith is linked to Rose in his correspondence: in a letter to Strahan in December, 1760, Smith wrote: "Remember me to Rose. Tell him I have not forgot what I promised him but have been excessively hurried. My delay, I hope, will occasion him no inconvenienancy: if it does I shall be excessively concerned and shall order some papers I left in England to be given to him. They are not what I would wish them, but I had rather lose a little reputation with the public as let him suffer by my negligence." (Correspondence, 54). These papers no doubt comprised the Considerations. The Considerations were later added as an appendix to the Theory of Moral Sentiments, starting with the third edition in 1767.

        Nachricht von den vielen Lastern, welche die Jesuiten in der Provinz Gvienne begangen haben; nebst seiner Verantwortung auf die Verläumdungen des Jacob Beaufes und einer Beurtheilung der Jesuiten überhaupt. Aus dem Französischen und Lateinischen übersetzt

      (Breslau, Gosohorsky), 1761.. 286 S., 1 Bl. HLdr. d. Zt. De Backer-S. IV, 754, 2.; Fromm III, 13032; Hayn-Got. III, 408. - Erste deutsche Ausgabe. Die französische Originalausgabe erschien 1648 in Leiden. Pierre Jarrige (1604-1660 od.1670), zunächst Jesuit, lehrte in Bordeaux Grammatik, Humaniora und Rhetorik. Er bekannte sich 1647 in La Rochelle zum Calvinismus, verteidigte in Leiden seinen Abfall und erhielt dafür von den Generalstaaten eine Pension. In La Rochelle gerichtlich zum Strang und zur Verbrennung seiner Leiche verurteilt, verfasste er eine Schmähschrift, der, nachdem die Jesuiten geantwortet hatten, eine noch giftigere folgte und auch hier nach der allgemeinen Schilderung der jesuitischen Missetaten abgedruckt ist. (Vgl. Lexikon für Theologie und Kirche, Bd. V, 287). - Die SS. 54-96 mit "Der Jesuiten Geilheit in ihren Classen; ihre Geilheit bei Besuchen, in ihren Häusern, in Kirchen, auf Reisen, auf dem Lande und in Nonnenklöstern". Jarrige berichtet über pädophile Jesuiten, Fälscher, Diebe, Mörder - kurzum, nichts wird ausgelassen. - "Gvienne" im Titel wird von Sabin 35794 fälschlich als Guyana aufgefasst, es handelt sich aber um die alte (bis 1790) französische Provinz Guienne bei Bordeaux.

        Petition to the Lord High Chancellor, dated 17th Febry. 1761, relating to a claim by a gunner for a share of the prize money gained by a British private Man of War.

      1761 Six folio leaves, written on 9 pages, the final 3 left blank; some chipping to leading edges with no loss of text, some sl. tears into central fold with no loss, sl. browning. Signed by Fountaine Cooke, solicitor of Clements Inn, and also to His Majesty's Mint. 32.5 x 20.5cm.Written on behalf of William Watson of Deptford who, from 1758, served as a gunner on board the 'Duke of Marlborough' , Captain Nathaniel Tanner, a private man-of-war, mainly owned by merchants of Deptford. The petition is a plea for a judicial enquiry to determine whether the owners have unlawfully withheld monies due to the gunner under the terms of his employment.This may be a copy rendered to the ship's owners, and is interesting as the owners' comments are noted in the margin. The Officers, Sailors and Landmen had entered into a written contract with the owners and captain which set out the rewards to which the crew would be entitled and 'of the amount of the sales and produce of such prize or prizes as should be taken by the said ship during the cruise and to one full and equal moiety or half part of head money and Ransom Bills that should be received ... and to one equal moiety of half part of the net produce of all such of the enemies' ships merchandizes, gold, silver, jewels, treasure, effects , goods, things of every sort & kind whatsoever that should be taken by the said ship & condemned as legal prizes after the charge of victualling & manning the said ship & of condemning prizes and Eight Pounds per centum for the Captain for his proportion should first be deducted ... and the rest divided amongst the crew, the gunner taking seven shares'. The recital notes that that ship cruised from September 1758 to November 1759 and took 'several prizes to the value of £30,000 of thereabouts'. The gunner's seven shares amounted to c£500 which the owners refused to pay, citing that he 'did misbehave himself' and that no threat of violence was used to make him relinquish his claim. The final three pages request that a Court of Equity summons the owners to swear on oath as to the facts of the case. The marginal notes record that some cargoes were sold by auction at Garraways Coffee House, and also at Gibraltar, and that the gunner's share of the prize might have been £70 if he had not forfeited the same. A note at the foot of the penultimate page records that the 'Managers gave him 2 guineas out of compassion as being in distress'. At Kew (Ref: HCA 26/9/137) and dated May 26th 1758, there is a record of a judgement of the High Court of Admiralty in respect of this ship, perhaps to award prize monies for an earlier voyage (the Captain and owners are the same, but not the gunner). This judgement records that the Duke of Marlborough was of 450 tons, had a crew of 220, and was armed with 36 carriage and 20 swivel guns.

        Nachricht von den vielen Lastern, welche die Jesuiten in der Provinz Gvienne begangen haben; nebst seiner Verantwortung auf die Verläumdungen des Jacob Beaufes und einer Beurtheilung der Jesuiten überhaupt. Aus dem Französischen und Lateinischen übersetzt

      (Breslau, Gosohorsky), 1761. 286 S., 1 Bl. HLdr. d. Zt. De Backer-S. IV, 754, 2.; Fromm III, 13032; Hayn-Got. III, 408. - Erste deutsche Ausgabe. Die französische Originalausgabe erschien 1648 in Leiden. Pierre Jarrige (1604-1660 od.1670), zunächst Jesuit, lehrte in Bordeaux Grammatik, Humaniora und Rhetorik. Er bekannte sich 1647 in La Rochelle zum Calvinismus, verteidigte in Leiden seinen Abfall und erhielt dafür von den Generalstaaten eine Pension. In La Rochelle gerichtlich zum Strang und zur Verbrennung seiner Leiche verurteilt, verfasste er eine Schmähschrift, der, nachdem die Jesuiten geantwortet hatten, eine noch giftigere folgte und auch hier nach der allgemeinen Schilderung der jesuitischen Missetaten abgedruckt ist. (Vgl. Lexikon für Theologie und Kirche, Bd. V, 287). - Die SS. 54-96 mit \"Der Jesuiten Geilheit in ihren Classen; ihre Geilheit bei Besuchen, in ihren Häusern, in Kirchen, auf Reisen, auf dem Lande und in Nonnenklöstern\". Jarrige berichtet über pädophile Jesuiten, Fälscher, Diebe, Mörder - kurzum, nichts wird ausgelassen. - \"Gvienne\" im Titel wird von Sabin 35794 fälschlich als Guyana aufgefasst, es handelt sich aber um die alte (bis 1790) französische Provinz Guienne bei Bordeaux.         Giphantia:* or a view of what has passed, what is now passing, and, during the present century, what will pass, in the world. Translated from the original French, with explanatory notes.

      London, Robert Horsfield, 1761. Two parts in one vol., 8vo, (6) + 130 + (6) + 126 + (2)pp, first title printed in red and black, including the final advertisement leaf, contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, gilt in compartments, raised bands and label. A very good crisp copy. First edition in English: very scarce, ESTC locating only 4 copies in the B. Isles (BL + Bodleian + Cambridge + Trinity Coll. Cambridge). Lewis (Utopian literature in Penn. State University Libraries>) p.188. Not, however, in Gove (The Imaginary voyage in prose fiction>). A remarkable imaginary voyage to the middle of Africa where the author finds the city of Babylon in a country called Giphantia. He there is confronted by the Prefect who introduces him to the Fantastical Tree. It is the leaves of this tree that inspire Tiphaigne to reflect on the meaning of life and to examine the strengths and weaknesses of the Western world, its philosophies, political and economic motivations and the characteristics which distinguish it from the animal world. In several chapters in Part II, (viz. The Fantastical Tree, The Predictions, The System> and Epistle to the Europeans>). Tiphaigne makes a number of telling observations about such subjects as trade, population, wealth, war, and European society in general. Tiphaigne, who was a doctor of the faculty of Caen and a member of the academy of Rouen, also published in 1761 his rather similar 'L'Empire des Zaziris sur les humains, ou la Zazirocratie', another critical and amusing survey of mid- 18th century society. * The title in French (Giphantie) is an anagram of the author's name.

        A view of the city of Boston, the capital of New England, in North America. Vue de la Ville de Boston, Capitale de la Nouvelle Angleterre, dans l'Amérique Septentrionale. Drawn on the Spot by his Excellency, Governor Pownal

      London: printed for John Bowles, Robert Sayer, Thomas Jefferys, Carington Bowles and Henry Parker, 1761. Copper engraving by P.C. Canot after a painting by Pugh from a design by Pownall. Expert repairs, trimmed to the plate mark. Sheet size: 14 1/4 x 20 3/8 inches. An important image of colonial Boston from the famous and very rare "Scenographia Americana" series Pownall's drawing of Boston, here ably engraved by Peter Charles Canot (1710-1777), was one of six prints in the Scenographia Americana series that were based on Pownall's sketches. This particular image was worked up into a painting by Pugh and it was from this that the engraving was made by Canot. The complete Scenographia Americana (with a total of 28 plates) is a legendary rarity: no copies are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty years. Individual prints are therefore all that the collector can hope for, and the present image is one of the most important. Governor Thomas Pownall, one of the few sympathetic colonial governors in North America, was also an artist, author and mapmaker. He first came to America as secretary of the governor of New York, Sir Danvers Osborn, in 1753, who committed suicide a few days after arriving. Pownall stayed on in America and became deeply involved in colonial politics during these critical years (the French and Indian War). He contributed to and supported Pitt's strategy in the war against the French and was appointed governor of Massachusetts, replacing Shirley, in August of 1757. He was at first very popular, energetically raising troops and prosecuting the war with the French, but political rivalry and objections to his own rather free lifestyle and manners led to his retirement from the position at his own request, returning to England in 1760. He remained a staunch supporter of the American causes as they arose in the 1760s. Interestingly, he was very much in favor of emancipation of the slaves in America. Pownall was a long time friend of Benjamin Franklin. Deak, 106.

Agriculturae Fundamenta Chemica, Akerbrukets Chemiska Grunder, .

      - Upsaliae 1761. 8vo. pp. (4), 321, (1). Contemporary blind limp boards. The scarce original edition. "Wallerius' interest in agriculture naturally led him to pursue agricultural chemistry, especially since agriculture was of great importance for the national economy. His research proved so basic and of such scope that he was called the father of agricultural chemistry. His principal work in this field was 'Agricultura fundamenta chemica .' which was published in Latin and Swedish, in parallel columns, and was later translated into German, French, Spanish, and English. Wallerius established as a fundamental, necessary principle that agricultural chemistry should be based on comparative study of the chemical composition not only of plants but also of the earth in which they grow" (D.S.B. XIV, pp. 144/145). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        DISCURSO HISTORICO JURIDICO DEL ORIGEN, FUNDACION, REEDIFICACION, DERECHOS, Y EXENCIONES DEL HOSPITAL DE SAN LAZARO DE LIMA

      Lima, 1761. Small quarto. Contemporary vellum with pigskin ties, lettered on spine. Very minor soiling, but generally quite bright and fresh internally. Near fine. The first edition of this interesting medical work. The work refers to the history and foundation of the Hospital de San Lazaro (founded 1563), which was devoted to "take [in] the leprous who are not slaves." It provides a complete description of the relations between the Church and the Hospital, as well as medical data about leprosy and its spread. Curiously enough, chapter six is dedicated to bullfighting in Peru, presumably due to the fact that bullfighting was a way of financing the Hospital's expenses. Only a handful of copies on OCLC.
