Petition to the Lord High Chancellor, dated 17th Febry. 1761, relating to a claim by a gunner for a share of the prize money gained by a British private Man of War.

1761 Six folio leaves, written on 9 pages, the final 3 left blank; some chipping to leading edges with no loss of text, some sl. tears into central fold with no loss, sl. browning. Signed by Fountaine Cooke, solicitor of Clements Inn, and also to His Majesty's Mint. 32.5 x 20.5cm.Written on behalf of William Watson of Deptford who, from 1758, served as a gunner on board the 'Duke of Marlborough' , Captain Nathaniel Tanner, a private man-of-war, mainly owned by merchants of Deptford. The petition is a plea for a judicial enquiry to determine whether the owners have unlawfully withheld monies due to the gunner under the terms of his employment. This may be a copy rendered to the ship's owners, and is interesting as the owners' comments are noted in the margin. The Officers, Sailors and Landmen had entered into a written contract with the owners and captain which set out the rewards to which the crew would be entitled and 'of the amount of the sales and produce of such prize or prizes as should be taken by the said ship during the cruise and to one full and equal moiety or half part of head money and Ransom Bills that should be received ... and to one equal moiety of half part of the net produce of all such of the enemies' ships merchandizes, gold, silver, jewels, treasure, effects , goods, things of every sort & kind whatsoever that should be taken by the said ship & condemned as legal prizes after the charge of victualling & manning the said ship & of condemning prizes and Eight Pounds per centum for the Captain for his proportion should first be deducted ... and the rest divided amongst the crew, the gunner taking seven shares'. The recital notes that that ship cruised from September 1758 to November 1759 and took 'several prizes to the value of £30,000 of thereabouts'. The gunner's seven shares amounted to c£500 which the owners refused to pay, citing that he 'did misbehave himself' and that no threat of violence was used to make him relinquish his claim. The final three pages request that a Court of Equity summons the owners to swear on oath as to the facts of the case. The marginal notes record that some cargoes were sold by auction at Garraways Coffee House, and also at Gibraltar, and that the gunner's share of the prize might have been £70 if he had not forfeited the same. A note at the foot of the penultimate page records that the 'Managers gave him 2 guineas out of compassion as being in distress'. At Kew (Ref: HCA 26/9/137) and dated May 26th 1758, there is a record of a judgement of the High Court of Admiralty in respect of this ship, perhaps to award prize monies for an earlier voyage (the Captain and owners are the same, but not the gunner). This judgement records that the Duke of Marlborough was of 450 tons, had a crew of 220, and was armed with 36 carriage and 20 swivel guns.

Two volumes, octavo, titles printed in black and red; contemporary mottle,d calf, spines ornately gilt in compartments between raised bands, tan morocco title and number labels (number on volume two missing). First edition of a scarce lunar utopia. This early tale of space-travel is also a wonderful Enlightenment document of faith in the perfect society.Little is known about the author, but his work is an extended meditation on the themes of society and the natural. Interestingly, the narrator seeks to establish his credentials as man of the world and experienced traveller by claiming to have journeyed to many parts of the world, including a couple of abortive attempts 'de débarquer dans les Terres Australes'. Given this pedigree, it can come as no surprise to the reader that the Voyager so easily journeys to the moon, nor that he is capable of giving such a wonderfully thorough account of Selenite society. The lunar city Sélénopolis displays the standard traits of symmetry and order, which are chronicled with uncritical sincerity by the awe-struck visitor: 'La comparaison de l'état social et de l'état naturel: dans l'absence du mien et du tien, il n'y a pas de vice, pas de crime, pas de crainte de la mort... . Having discussed their morals, advances in science and all-round goodness, the traveller sadly takes his leave, happy only in that all of the notes he has taken will be of such inestimable use 'pour l'agrément, l'utilité & le bonheur de l'humanité, dans le dessein d'en enrichir ma Patrie'. Bands, slightly worn.

Lives of the Admirals, and other eminent British Seamen; containing their personal histories, and details of all their public services...

London: T. Osborne [etc], 1761. Four volumes, octavo, with a number of oval portraits of naval figures, and six folding engraved maps, contemporary calf binding, spines gilt in compartments between raised bands, red edges. Third edition: a really attractive set of a good early edition of this standard work, a comprehensive naval history of Great Britain first published in the 1740s, which remained in print in various forms until the late nineteenth century. Campbell was quite admired by Dr. Johnson. He told Boswell that he once drank thirteen bottles of port at a sitting (hard to imagine him standing), and Johnson commented approvingly that 'he has not been in the inside of a church for many years; but he never passes a church without pulling off his hat. This shows that he has good principles.'Most copies of Campbell's Lives were read to bits, to judge by the poor condition usually ecountered. The maps by Thomas Jefferys comprise the following: Europe, Africa, Madagascar & Zanzibar, Asia, North America and South America. Fine crisp set.

Bel exemplaire. Bengesco, 1164 ; L'Oeuvre de V. à la BN, 3071, 3073.

msterdam [i.e. London]- Chez Marc Michel Rey 1761 - A scarce English piracy of this famous work by Jean Jacques Rousseau. Issued in thesame year as the first edition. The imprint is false and does not match the true first. The style and typography are English and title page ornaments attributed to John Haberkorn. (ESTC T228413)Six volumes bound in three, each with separate title page in red and black, and each with separate half title. Collated: ESTC claims an additional preface at the start of Part 2 which this copy lacks however it appears as originally issued without. McEachern defines two variants of Type 6: 6A has C2 of Vol 2 Correct, 6B has it mis-signed at F2. (McEachern 6A)Julie, ou la Nouvelle Heloise is an epistolary novel which displays Rousseau's philosophical theories of autonomy and authenticity as moral values. An extremely popular work, it was a best-seller of the century, with publishers unable to fill the increasing demand for copies and ultimately having to rent copies by the day or the hour. As such, many pirated copies became available, such as this set. These piracies are increasingly rare on the market. This edition's known holdings in the UK are the British Library, Birmingham University Library and The National Trust. An important work inits time and in the literary canon, it developed Rousseau's Romanticism and was an influential workfor other writers of the age. As it was a novel, it at first escaped the censorship many of Rousseau's works were subject to, however wasat length put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, perhaps contributing to, rather than hindering, its lasting success. Condition: In original full calf bindings with raised bands. Externally, smart with some light rubbing and bumping to boards and extremities. Wear to head and tails of spine. Lacking four of six original red spine labels. Ink signature to pastedown of volume I and very slight worming to frontpastedown and front four pages. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean with occasional spotting and marginal age toning. Overall: VERY GOOD [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Sermon de Rabin Akib, Prononcé à Smyrne le 20 Novembre 1761. Traduit de l'Hébreu [titre courant].

      - S.l.n.d. [1761]. In-8, plein maroquin acajou janséniste, dos à 5 nerfs, titre doré, date dorée en pied, chasses filetées or, large dentelle intérieure dorée, tranches dorées (reliure Rivière & Son), 15 p. (sign.

Leicht knittrig; Spuren alter Faltung.
