Letters Patent, (1683-1760, King of Great Britain)

1760 - by and with the advice of the Lords of the Treasury, leasing to George Eckersall the house, with gardens, stable and coach house, "all late in the occupation and tenure of Sir Christopher Wren . situate . near our Palace of Hampton Court", with a frontage of 42 feet to Hampton Court Green, and running 328 feet to the Thames, abutting on the East 'the Mitre' [inn] and a house belonging to the keeper of the palace, let to Jasper English, on the West the Store House, Store House Yard and gardener's house, for £25 paid and £10 p.a., to run for 22½ years from 1787, fine engraved portrait of George II 8¾" x 7¾", and engraved border on three sides of the document, all elaborately decorated, signed also by the Deputy Clerk of the Pells, the Middlesex Auditor, and by Robert Herbert, Surveyor-General of the King's Works, vellum, 27¼" x 33¾", Westminster, 13th June green braid tassel at foot but no Exchequer seal, creased at some folds and worn where folds cross obscuring a few words of text (can be supplied from context) The lease continues that granted to Christopher Wren, junior, 1675-1747, on 21st January 1738 to run for 28½ years from 1758 at £10 p.a. No doubt George Eckersall had taken over that lease and wished to secure a long tenure. The houses mentioned still form the delightful group opposite the palace gates. Sir Christopher was Surveyor-General, 1669-1718, and lived there while constructing Fountain Court and many other works at the palace. Named as Lords of the Treasury are the Duke of Newcastle, Henry Bilson Legge (Chancellor of the Exchequer), James Grenville, Lord North, and James Oswald. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Captain Greenvile Collins was an outstanding naval officer who became 'Hydrographer to the King' before the Coasting Pilot was published. Erste Ausgabe. (Higgs 2422; Humpert 7491; Kress S.4180; Cioranescu 11854).

The Hague ('s-Gravenhage), Jacob & Isaac Scheltus, 1758 (1760). - 4to. 22 pp., final blank. With woodcut device on title page and one initial. Red modern cloth with giltstamped spine title. First edition of the peace treaty between the Netherlands and Algiers on 23 November 1757 (or 12 Rabi' al-awwal of the year 1171, the Prophet's birthday), which ended a war that had lasted since 1755. After the War of Spanish Succession had left the Dutch navy neglected and their merchant fleet large and vulnerable, the corsairs of the Barbary states had begun a series of attacks on Dutch ships. Already the only major naval power to pay tribute to Algiers (under a 1679 treaty), the Netherlands increased their payments to bring about by diplomacy the peace they were unable to enforce by military means. While Algiers had agreed to the peace in 1726 (and the Dutch made new treaties with Tunis and Tripoli), relationships remained tense. The Netherlands were required to send large annual amounts of gunpowder, arms, and naval stores, and "occasionally, if the demands of the Barbary corsairs became too excessive, the Dutch would fight back. They were at war with Algiers from 1755 to 1757 and 1792 to 1793, and with Tripoli from 1789 to 1791. However, in the end peace would once more be concluded. Payment of tribute was always cheaper than maintaining a naval squadron in the Mediterranean for years on end" (Jamieson, Lords of the Sea: A History of the Barbary Corsairs [2012], p. 179). - The present copy is a new issue with an added final leaf (and blank leaf) containing three additional articles appended in 1760. In part, this is due to the particular nature of her caseÂ… a mirror-image of Robinson Crusoe a savage shipwrecked in the midst of civilization.""Legends of wild children fascinated Europe during the 18th century. One of the most famous was the mysterious story of a young girl, later named Marie-Angélique Memmie Leblanc, found roaming the forests of France in the early 1730s. This very scarce contemporary account of her life, anonymously published in London circa 1760, is very possibly the first edition in English of the life of Leblanc, who came to embody the unresolved origin of the human race. The fascination with her “place of origin and hence with her racial identity marks out a new direction in the history of the feral child. In part, this is due to the particular nature of her case and the fact that she was effectively a castaway in populous France, a mirror-image of Robinson Crusoe, a savage shipwrecked in the midst of civilizationÂ… [Like] Shakespeare's Miranda, Leblanc comes upon a Europe that appears to her as a brave new world.” Her importance was heightened by the publication of RousseauÂ’s Discourse on the Origins of Inequality (1755): ""Leblanc appeared in France just at that moment in which Rousseau revolutionized our understanding of the 'savage'"" (Newton, Savage Girls and Wild Boys, 114-15). After centuries of speculation, in which Leblanc was variously believed to be from Scandinavia, the Arctic, the Caribbean or the American West, or was seen as a representative of the missing link, ""the American scholar Julia Douthwaite and the French surgeon Serge Aroles unearthed hundreds of documents on Marie-Angelique"" that confirmed certain key aspects her life (Stanley, Medical Marvels , 26). ""Research suggests that she may have been born a Sioux from the Wisconsin region, bought by a French woman, and transported with her to Labrador then France. In September 1731 the girl was sighted in an orchard near the village of SongiÂ… The villagers set a bulldog on her, which she killed with one blow before scaling the tree and swinging, branch to branch, back into the woods. The village nobleman, Monsieur d'Epinay, ordered that she be caughtÂ… the girl (who appeared to be anywhere from 10 to 18 years old, depending on sources) amazed her captors by skinning and eating a rabbit uncooked and devouring a chicken in the same way. After several washings, her skin became white. Her huge thumbs and long, tough fingernails were a source of astonishment, as were her sharp, piercing criesÂ… To avoid further escapades, d'EpinayÂ… placed the wild girl in the municipal Hopital St.-Maur in October 1731Â… Called the 'shepherd's beast' on the d'Epinay estate, she was henceforth named Marie-Angélique Memmie LeblancÂ… her once-robust health, weakened by the diet of cooked food and the sedentary lifestyle at the Hopital (and later at convents in Chalons and Paris) was permanently damagedÂ…. Once she became fluent enough to answer questions, her interrogators were able to piece together part of her past. She apparently had been seen roaming the Champenois countryside in the company of another girlÂ… After a dispute over a trinket (some claim it was a rosary), Marie-Angélique wounded her companion with her club. She ran off to fend for herself when she was discovered in the apple orchard near Songi. Thanks to articles in the Mercure de FranceÂ… word of this prodigy quickly spread to the capital and beyond—to England, Scotland, even SwedenÂ… The powerful duc d'Orleans took Marie-Angélique permanently under his protection in 1744Â… She then moved to the capital and began preparations for taking the veilÂ… Mystery continued to shroud Leblanc's legacy into the next century and continues still today” (Douthwaite, 29-33).Anonymously issued in France in 1755 as L'Histoire d'une jeune fille sauvage: authorship attributed to French writer Marie-Catherine Homassel Hecquet or French scientist Charles-Marie de la Condamine. Library of Congress contains a copy of this 116-page edition published in London by R. Davidson: assigning it a date of ""about 1755"" (LOC IV:152). ESTC lists two London editions, each with no publication date, each assigned a possible publication date of 1760. The imprint (London: sold by R. Dursley, T. Davison, T. Manson, C. Bland, and P. Jones) of the 155-page London edition is believed “probably false. Most of these names appear with varying initials in other false imprints"" (ESTC T12460). This preferred 116-page London edition contains the imprint, “London: sold by R. Davidson"": with no bibliographic caution on the imprint's reliability (ESTC N51560). ESTC, LOC, OCLC list no edition in English with a publication date, approximate or otherwise, earlier than this editionÂ’s suggested publication dates of 1755, 1760. Title page with: ""Newly Translated from the French of Madam H——T."" ESTC N51560. LOC IV:152. Bookseller ticket.Text fresh, only light embrowning to preliminaries, mild edge-wear to boards.

Augsburg: J. E. Ridinger and 1761 1760 - First (and only) edition of both works. 4to (29 x 22.5 cm). Texts in German and French. First work: engraved title, 36 pp., 46 engraved plates; Second work: 16 engraved plates numbered 1-15 with unnumbered plan of a joust, contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt, red sprinkled edges, an excellent example. Ridinger was a German painter and engraver who studied at Ulm before establishing himself in Augsburg where he soon made a great reputation for animal paintings. He became the official painter for several great nobles addicted to the hunt. As here he represented animals accurately and naturally in the midst of beautiful landscapes, his execution was remarkable. But it for his depiction of horses that he is rightly most renowned. The first suite of plates depict the exercises for riders in the riding school (plates 1-43) as well as on the battlefield (44-46). The riding school plates show the horse being introduced, then trotting, volting, galloping, the courbette, croupade, etc., through to the capriole. The battlefield plates show the horse being accustomed to the waving of flags, drumming, and shooting. The second suite depicts the exercises for participating in tournaments and jousts. This copy includes the unnumbered plate with the plan of the riding school which Dejager calls "very rare" noting that Thienermann found it very difficult to find a plate to list in his bibliography of Ridinger plates. Dejager 247 & 248; Nissen 3415; Thienemann 646–692 and 693–707. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Lettres sur l'électricité

Paris, H.L.

Bel exemplaire.

Haarlem, C.H. Bohn, 1760. 8vo. With frontispiece folding engraved plate of a hyacinth. 19th-century boards.

Cat. Lindley Libr., p. 231; Krelage, p. 17 etc.; cf. BMC NH, p. 956. First edition of a treatise on the cultivation of bulb flowers, signed by the author. The Dutch export of bulbs began to develop in the 17th century. Foreigners held the view that only the Dutch climate and soil were suitable for the cultivation of bulbs and that only Dutch florists possessed the necessary knowledge for this craft. European courts, with nobility and gentility following suit, bought their bulbs directly from Holland, with Haarlem as centre for this trade. Nicolaas van Kampen was among the circa 10 Haarlem florists who monopolized this lucrative business. He treats the hyacinth, the most popular bulb in the 18th century and a favourite of an important trendsetter like Madame de Pompadour, the tulip, the Persian buttercup and the anemone as well as other flowers.Curiously, our copy contains the author's signature on the verso of the title with the text "Les auteurs de cet ouvrage désavoüent tous les Exemplaires qui ne seront pas signés de leur propre Main." The Traité des fleurs a oignons was translated into English and German.Boards damaged; a good, untrimmed copy from the library of J.H. Krelage.

Tempo granita vitello biondo completa.

Small quarto, 99 pp. & 6 unnumbered leaves, in original marbled paper boards. A book with a strong claim to have been owned by Captain Cook. It is a rare work and the first navigation manual of the Baltic Sea. As is generally the case with such working books of navigation all editions are extremely scarce; this is the sixth edition. This book has a tantalising and plausible ownership inscription in a very old hand to the front pastedown which reads: "Henry Murck his book bought at Sea of Captn. Cook". This intriguing note is clearly meant to refer to the great explorer himself, who had spent many years sailing on colliers in the Baltic Sea before he joined the Royal Navy in 1755, and would have always had an interest in navigational guides and pilots. In the 1760s, right up until he sailed on the Endeavour, Cook was doing his superb work in mapping coastlines in Newfoundland and North America, but it is certainly very likely that he would have kept up with any work being published regarding his old stamping ground. By the same token, while Cook is not known to have had much German, the language in which this book is written, as a good navy-man of the Hannoverian era he was surrounded by German speakers whenever he sailed. The name of the owner of the book, "Murck", is certainly one to conjure with, as that name recurs in the world of contemporary shipping: a Henry Murck is, for example, listed as joining the Marine Society of the City of New York in 1795, while an L. Murck, to cite just one meaningful example, is listed as a having a 1798-registered ship out of Gothenburg (Sweden) in the Register of Shipping for 1811. The Murck family, that is, show every sign of having been established sailors in the region in the late eighteenth century, which certainly adds weight to the early provenance. Without doubt there is a firm connection between the book and the naval officer named Henry Murck who, after the end of the Napoleonic Wars, was one of the founding officers of the modern Prussian Navy in Stralsund, not least because this copy has a later stamp for a research library in Stralsund. This Henry Murck lived into the late 1840s, but it is feasible considering his family's sea-faring history, that this book had been passed down through his family. Title-page upper corner with loss, laid down, marked, old stamps including deaccession stamp; first leaf with an old repair along fore-edge not affecting text; last leaf with repair to gutter; some significant wear but withal very good.

I piatti presentano qualche abrasione, così come i labbri anteriori. Tagli rossi.

Paris: chez le Sieur Julien [circa ] 1760 - Copper engraving with full original wash colour, dissected into 9 sections and mounted upon contemporary blue silk, bearing former ownerÕs stamp of the ÔBibliothque de l'AcadŽmie des SciencesÕ in the upper left corner (Excellent, the most sumptuous original colour, original printerÕs smudge along neatline in upper left corner, some wear along original folds of silk), 53 x 41.5 cm (21 x 16.5 inches). An ultra-deluxe, and quite possibly unique, example of Rizzi-ZannoniÕs rare separately issued map of the East Friesland and Bremen regions of northwestern Germany, made during the Seven YearsÕ War, featuring the most exquisite and sophisticated original full wash colour, dissected and mounted upon contemporary blue silk. This gorgeous map is an ultra-deluxe, and possibly unique, example of Giovanni Antonio Rizzi-ZannoniÕs rare separately issued map of far northwestern Germany, including the East Friesland and Bremen regions. Unlike all other examples of the map that we could trace, this particular example features the most sumptuous and sophisticated original wash colour, with the landscape accented in a variety of different pastel hues, while the seas are bathed in an aquamarine wash, with the coastal shoals accented in a tan hue. Moreover, the map is dissected and mounted upon original blue silk, a truly luxurious and extraordinary flourish. The map depicts all or parts of what were then various German states, including the Principality of East Friesland (upper left, since 1744 a possession of Prussia); the Free Imperial City of Bremen, the great port located along the Weser River (left-hand side); the County of Oldenburg; as well as parts of the Bishoprics of MŸnster and OsnabrŸck. The map was made during the height of the Seven YearsÕ War (1756-63), a global conflict, in which Germany was a principal theatre. In the German States, the war pitted Prussia (which dominated the regions depicted), Hannover (a possession of the British royal family) and her regional allies, backed by Britain, against a coalition of German states that included Saxony and Bavaria, which were supported by France and Austria. The conflict was brutal and numerous large-scale battles were fought throughout Germany. In particular, the regions depicted here were dominated by the operations of the armies under the Prussian Field Marshal Ferdinand, Prince of Brunswick-LŸneburg. The present map was issued in Paris around 1760 by the prominent cartographer Giovanni Antonio Rizzi-Zannoni, being one of a series of separately issued maps of German regions issued to satisfy French interest in the ongoing conflict. France was astounded by the amount of blood and treasure their country was expending in Germany, which almost invariably resulted in military defeats. While the Treaty of Hubertusburg (1763) ended the war in Europe, largely on the status quo ante bellum, the French Royal government was permanently weakened by its war debts, setting the foundation for its collapse a little over a generation later during the French Revolution. The treatment of the geography on the present map is highly detailed and accurate and for the time, as Rizzi-Zannoni possessed excellent sources. Not only did he work in the region as surveyor during the mid-1750s, but as explained in the ÔAvertissementÕ (Notice) in the lower left, through his membership in the Cosmographical Society of Nuremberg, GermanyÕs premier geographic institution, he was supplied with groundbreaking maps and scientific observations. Moreover, as he noted in the title, he was indebted to the works of the eminent German geographer, Anton Friedrich BŸsching, who had published a fantastic geographic description of the region within his Anton Friderich BŸschings neue Erdbeschreibung. 3, Das Deutsche Reich nach seiner gegenwŠrtigen Staatsverfassung (Hamburg, 1757). Giovanni Rizzi-Zannoni (1736 - 1814) was one of the most consequential cartographers of the Enlightenment Age. Born in Padova, Italy, he studied at that

In-8. [161 x 101 mm] Collation : (4), 484 pp Basane brune, dos à nerfs orné, tranches mouchetées. (Reliure de l'époque).
