SEMIRAMIS; A TRAGEDY. Translated from the French of M. De Voltaire

London: Printed for G. Kearsly a the Golden Lion in Ludgate Street. London: Printed for G. Kearsly, a the Golden Lion in Ludgate-Street.. 1760. drab boards.. The front paste-down bears the bookplate of Alaskan bibliographer. James Wickersham, who attached to the rear paste-down the mailing. label (with canceled stamp) of the British bookseller, McLeish &. Sons, from whom presumably he obtained this book. Lacks the. advertising leaf at rear, a very good copy. (#140101). First edition in English. "Semiramis, ninth-century queen of Assyria (present-day Iraq), was, until the early twentieth century, a figure of legend that had been well- established as of the classical period: begotten of the fish-goddess Atargatis and fed by doves until her rescue by a royal shepherd; bride of general Onnes and successor to his power and eventually to the throne of Assyria; founder of Babylon and every other monument in the region; long- lived, brave, wise and sexually potent, she was turned into a dove at her death and worshipped subsequently as a surrogate of the Assyrian fertility goddess Astarte. Modern archaeological research by Lehman-Haupt and others has largely replaced legend with history, but the legend was still alive and well in Voltaire's time. She was a female personification of all that was gaudy and glorious in pre- Christian antiquity, and she furnished good material for this tragedy (Voltaire's preference in drama), composed in 1748, a year after his conte philosophique ZADIG. Voltaire's play has probably had more continuing vitality as the foundation of the libretto of the Rossini opera, 'Semiramide' (1823), widely considered as one of the best, and last, operas in the Baroque style." - Robert Eldridge.       Regensburg, typis Weissianis, 1760. 4:o. 24 s. & 1 utvikbar handkolorerad grav. plansch. Rödbrunt pappbd med mörkt blå titeletikett (Johanna Röjgård). Gamla marmorerade snitt. Fint ex.. Nissen Die zoologische Buchillustration 3627.

Lithographie koloriert.

8Tobias Pfeifer-Helke, 2007, SIK)

Le Berger Recompensé [The Shepherd Repaid]

Engraving. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of some light foxing. Creases on side and bottom of sheet where it has been folded. Trimmed within the platemark on the upper margin. Image size: 17 1/4 x 14 3/16 inches. 19 3/4 x 15 inches. A lovely pastoral print after the celebrated French Rococo artist Francois Boucher. Francois Boucher (1703-1770) was one of the most versatile and influential French artists of the eighteenth century. He not only decorated palaces and private residences, but also painted portraits, landscapes, and mythological scenes; and designed opera sets, porcelains, and tapestries. He was a prolific painter and draftsman and he excelled in cabinet-sized paintings for collectors, many of which were reproduced in print in an effort to satisfy the demands of eager connoisseurs. He began his career producing reproductive engravings of Watteau's paintings, but he quickly became one of the most fashionable artists in Paris. He was favoured by the King's mistress, Madame du Pompadour, and quickly became "premier peintre" to Louis XV. Boucher rejuvenated the 'pastoral tradition' in French art, and was instrumental in developing the Rococo style which characterized French art during Louis XV's reign. This sublime print by the Parisian engraver Robert Gaillard is an evocative example of Boucher's sumptuous style of painting. A reclining shepherd has been playing the pipes beside the path where a pretty peasant girl passes by. They share a powerful gaze, and the girl offers him a wreath of spring flowers. The image is strikingly vibrant.

I piatti presentano qualche abrasione, così come i labbri anteriori. Tagli rossi.

[Twickenham]: Strawberry Hill Press. 1760. First Edition. Hardcover. Contemporary calf rebacked preserving original boards and lettering piece, boards with decorative gilt border and elaborate gilt corner pieces, spine with gilt decoration, corners a little bumped/rubbed, some surface wear to boards with small loss to gilding in a few places, edges of text-block marbled, marbled endpapers, engraved vignette on title page and vignette on 'Ad Lectorum' leaf both by Grignion, contents clean and bright. This copy is in the first state of what Hazen describes as " perhaps the most distinguished piece of printing to come from the Press at Strawberry Hill" (Hazen 7, p. 49)., Horace Walpole (1717-1797) was a politician, a patron of the arts and an author. Today he probably best known as the author of the gothic novel, 'The Castle of Otranto' and for his home in Twickenham, Strawberry Hill. Here Walpole indulged his taste for the gothic, slowly transforming the house into the finest example of Georgian Gothic revival architecture in the country. The house gave its name to Walpole's private press which was founded in June 1757. While the press published many of Walpole's own works it did not publish his most famous work, 'The Castle of Otranto' and in later life Walpole would describe his 'Anecdotes of Painting in England' as "‘the only thing I ever published of any use." Hazen it seems disagrees with this sentiment as did Thomas Dibdin, who described the 'Pharsalia' as the "most perfect specimen of that press.", 4to 11" - 13" tall, [3]ff., [1]-525, [1] pp .

Sir John Hawkins (1719 - 1789) was an English author and friend of Dr Samuel Johnson and Horace Walpole. He was part of Johnson's various clubs but later left The Literary Club after a disagreement with some of Johnson's other friends. His friendship with Johnson continued and he was made one of the executors of Johnson's will. Condition: Rebacked in calf preserving original boards.         A Perspective View of Brighthelmston, and of the Sea Coast as far as the Isle of Wight, Inscribed (by Permission) to His Royal Highness William Henry Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, Earl of Connaught of the Kingdom of Ireland, Ranger of Hampton Court Park, and Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter

London: Sold by James Lambert, Painter, at Lewes in Sussex, and Robert Sayer, Map and Printseller, [circa 1760]. Hand-coloured engraving on laid paper by Pierre Charles Canot. Heightened with small spots of gum arabic in the lower part of the image. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, a 1 1/4" tear in the left margin, and a skilfully repaired 2" loss in the lower right corner of the sheet. 16 3/8 x 24 5/8 inches. 18 1/2 x 26 5/8 inches. A beautiful panoramic view of the English coastal town of Brighton. Situated on the southeast coast of England, Brighton or 'Brighthelmston' as the town was originally known, was settled by the Saxons. Initially, it was a small, peaceful farming and fishing community, but it eventually expanded into a bustling fishing village and the second largest town in Sussex by the mid-seventeenth century. Its growth, however, was briefly curtailed in the early 1700s by the coastal erosion and violent storms that impaired the fishing industry. In the mid eighteenth-century, Dr. Richard Russell, a resident of the neighbouring town of Lewes, popularized his ideas regarding the therapeutic effects of seawater, and Brighton was consequently transformed into a popular resort town and a fashionable social destination for Londoners. A resident of Lewes, Sussex, James Lambert was a landscape and portrait painter and a member of the Society of Arts. He frequently exhibited in London at venues including the Royal Academy and is primarily known for his many watercolours of the countryside, architecture, and historical monuments of Sussex. Cf. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs, vol. 8, p. 198; cf. DNB.

SEMIRAMIS; A TRAGEDY. Translated from the French of M. De Voltaire

London: Printed for G. [TWO ALBUMS OF MORE THAN 120 VUES D'OPTIQUE OF DIFFERENT LOCATIONS IN EUROPE]

Paris. 1760-1762.. Two volumes. 62; 61 leaves, each with a mounted plate. Images vary in size, either 11 x 16 inches and 8 x 12 inches. Oblong folio. 19th-century cloth, gilt; rebacked in red morocco. Corners repaired. Wear and soiling to boards. Internally clean, colors bright and fresh. Very good. Two large albums containing 123 brightly colored vues d'optique depicting scenes from Paris, Rome, London, and many other locations in Europe. Lettering is typically printed at the top and bottom of the plate, primarily in French, with the letters at the top reading backwards. The letters above the text were deliberately reversed since these prints were designed for viewing in optical machines with a magnifying glass and a reflective mirror, which gave the viewer an illusion of depth and reversed the image. The views are mostly of France, including many scenes from Versailles and the ports of the realm. There are likewise a significant number of views of important landmarks around Rome. Other views show notable locations in the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Poland, and London. A handful of the plates show more unusual locales - Mexico City, Siberia, St. Petersburg, Peking, Cayenne, and French Guiana. Altogether, an impressive collection of these handsome engravings.

[19 x 13], (2) ff., 132 pp., 112 (ie 214) (1) f., with one large [49.5 x 34.5] engraved plate of the catafalque signed Camacho after Bexerano 1759, and two woodcut plates of calligrams; [Including:] TAGLE Y BRACHO, Juan Antonio de. Oracion Funebre. (12) ff., 136 (ie 138) pp. Bound in contemporary calf, joints cracked but sound. Some minor staining at extreme edge of title. Plate toned but very fresh, as is rest of copy. Excellent.Rare first edition of the funeral-book of Maria Barbara of Portugal, Queen-consort of Spain and wife of Ferdinand VI, with a large folding plate of her catafalque. As with many books of exequies for European monarchs printed in America, the volume appeared over a year after the Queen's death in Madrid in August 1758, subsequent to her funeral exequies held at the Cathedral of Lima on 4 September 1759. The volume's folding engraving depicts a four-tier catafalque with six pairs of Ionic columns and eight obelisks, of which the four largest are crowned by the arms of the Spanish monarchy: a castle tower and a lion with its paws resting on twin globes. The Queen's casket is shown on a dias in the center of the monument, surrounded by elaborately wrought candelabra and scrollwork-a visible testament to French rococo influence in the court of Spain during the mid-18th C. Below the catafalque are the signatures of its engraver Camacho and its designer and builder, the architect Antonio Bejarano Loayza; a year after Ferdinand VI died in 1759, heartbroken and distraught, Loayza designed his catafalque as well.Among the work's gathering of dedicatory and elegiac verse-sonnets, decasyllables, octavas, décimas, romances, acrostics and other forms popular in Perú at the time-of special note are two unusual folded woodcuts presenting a large, diamond-shaped acrostic, and a self-described "eccentric labyrinth" of décimas in the shape of a spiraling horn. The volume is bound with a separately-titled copy of the funeral oration.OCLC: Indiana, Duke, Yale. *Lilly on-line record; Medina 1162; Vargas Ugarte 1818 Palau 143,659 (lacking first section); Watanabe 2452; Pouncey, "Túmulos of Colonial Perú," The Art Bulletin, v. 67 #1 (March 1985), pp. 18-32.

8, p. 198; cf. DNB.
