Palau 154321.

Vocabularium Iuris Utriusque ex Variis Ante Editis, Praesertim ex

1760. Vicat, B[eat]-Phil[ippe] [1715-1770], Compiler. [Ferrigno, Pasquale (fl. 1760), Editor]. Vocabularium Iuris Utriusque ex Variis Ante Editis, Praesertim ex Alexand. Scoti, Jo. Kahl, Barn. Brissonnii, et Jo. Gottl. Heineccii Accessionibus. Auctior Atque Emendatior. Naples: Sumptibus Joannis Gravier, 1760. Four volumes. Volume I has copperplate pictorial frontispiece. Octavo (7-1/" x 4-3/4"). Contemporary vellum, gilt-edged title panels to spines, ribbon markers. Some rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, some minor spotting and light smudges. Occasional toning, light foxing in a few places, internally clean. A nice set. * Second edition. As Vicat explains in his preface, he compiled this dictionary from those of Francois Hotoman, Barnabe Brisson, Johannes Calvinus (Kahl) and, especially, Alexander Scotus to bring their "excellent" work to a wider audience. More important, by combining these works and filling the gaps with original entries he was able to create a dictionary that covered the whole language of the law. Vicat's definitions are brief, but they contain comprehensive references to authorities and texts as well as conjugations, common phrases using the words, metaphors, alternate definitions and antonyms. The first edition was published in 1759. Vicat was a jurist and the director of the University of Lausanne from 1749 to 1762. A pioneer in library science, he was the first to issue a printed library catalogue. British Museum Catalogue (Compact Edition) 26:118.

A Description of the Royal Palace, and Monastery of St. Laurence, called The Escurial; and of the Chapel Royal of the Pantheon. Translated from the Spanish of Frey Francisco de los Santos, Chaplain to his Majesty Philip the Fourth. Illustrated with Copper Plates [AND] Thompson (George): A Description of the Chapel Royal, called, The Pantheon or, Burial Place of the Kings of Spain. Translated from the Spanish of Frey Franciso de los Santos

London, Printed by Dryden Leach, For S. Hooper..., 1760. FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION. 2 parts bound in one volume. 4to, 184 x 109 mms., pp. xxxvii [xxxviii blank], 299 [300 blank], including half-title, engraved coat of arms on verso of errata leaf before dedication and list of subscribers; xi [xii blank], 60, 12 folding engraved plates at end of volume, contemporary calf, red leather label; upper front joint cracked and front joint slightly creased, corners a bit worn, some other very slight wear to the volume, but a good copy. The subscribers include the usual clutch of Royal Highnesses and the nobility, and luminaries such as Ralph Allen, the playwright and novelist Richard Cumberland, the antiquary and book collector Richard Fenton, David Garrick, John Hall Stephenson [sic, for Stevenson], Jonas Hanway, Thomas North, Lawrence [sic] Sterne, Voltaire, and William Warburton. The first edition of Santos' book was published in 1657 in Madrid, Descripcio?n del Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo del Escorial. The Escorial is said to be based on descriptions of Solomon's Temple; whatever its inspiration or source, it can easily survive the cliché of being described as one of the most remarkable buildings in the world. Thompson's translation is still one of the most useful accounts of the palace.

The Interest of Great Britain considered, with Regard to her Colonies,

London: printed for T. Becket, , 1760. and the Acquisitions of Canada and Guadeloupe. To which are added, Observations concerning the Increase of Mankind, Peopling those Countries, &c. 7 pamphlets bound in one volume, octavo (190 × 128 mm). Franklin: pp. [2], 58, including the additional leaf at the end. Late 19th-century half calf, marbled boards, red morocco label, narrow bands, gilt lozenges to compartments, marbled endpapers. Full-page table to item (e). A little rubbed, contents variably soiled and browned; half-title and title of item (b) torn, no loss of text, half-title laid down, last leaf of the same torn across and with an old sewn repair backed with paper; final leaf of Franklin slightly crumpled and torn at the inner margin, loss of a few characters but overall very good. First edition of Franklin's "Canada Pamphlet", an important contribution to the debate on the relative merits of the retention of Canada or sugar-rich Guadeloupe following the impending victory in the Seven Years' War. Although contemporary opinion credited Franklin ? this copy is annotated "by Mr. Frankland [sic] of America" on the title page ? 19th-century scholarship attributed the pamphlet to Richard Jackson. However, the publication of The Papers of Benjamin Franklin returned "The Canada Pamphlet" to the canon: "in recent years Franklin's authorship has been re-established in the minds of all but a few doubters, though, as Franklin himself seems to have acknowledged, he received some help from his friend and ally Jackson. With this attribution to Franklin the present editors wholly concur" (Papers 9:53). As well as arguing strongly for the retention of Canada, in this, "one of his most important publications in pamphlet form", Franklin also discusses the potential problems of government that might attend the expansion of the colonies, but doubts their ability to act in concert. Further growth "may render them dangerous. Of this I own, I have not the least conception, when I consider that we have already fourteen separate governments ... Those we now have, are not only under different governors, but have different forms of government, different laws, different interests, and some of them different religious persuasions and different manners. Their jealousy of each other is so great that however necessary an union of the colonies has long been, for their common defence and security against their enemies, ... they have never been able to effect such an union among themselves ... Nothing but the immediate command of the crown has been able to produce even the imperfect union but lately seen there". From the library of the 5th Earl of Rosebery, Liberal prime minister and bibliophile, whose collecting was marked by a sensitivity to provenance, the present volume with the armorial bookplate of the antiquary and collector James Maidment reimposed verso of the front free endpaper. A prominent figure in Scottish literary circles, Maidment was a friend of Sir Walter Scott, and himself an author: "his publications mainly of editions of Scottish historical, literary, genealogical, and antiquarian material were very numerous. Many were anonymous, and most were privately printed in small editions, some at least for their bawdy or erotic content" (ODNB). The sale of his extensive library in over 5,000 lots occupied 15 sessions in April and May 1880, raising about £4,500. The other six items in this pamphlet volume relate to Britain's involvement in mid-18th century conflicts worldwide, including a number of uncommon and important pieces, all printed in London: a. A Letter to the Most Noble Thomas, Duke of Newcastle, on certain Points of the last Importance to these Nations ... H. Whitridge, 1746; pp. [2], 38. First edition; an analysis of the causes of the second Jacobite rebellion; b. EGMONT, John Perceval, Earl of. An Examination of the Principles, and an Enquiry into the Conduct of the Two B*****rs ... The Fifth Edition, reviewed and corrected. A. Price, 1749; pp. [4], 79, half-title bound in. Criticism of the prime minister Henry Pelham and his brother the Duke of Newcastle for their conduct of the Austrian War of Succession; c. CHESTERFIELD, Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of. An Apology for a Late Resignation in a Letter from an English Gentleman to his Friend at the Hague. John Freeman, 1748; pp. 46. First edition. Chesterfield's resignation as secretary of state over the ability of the Dutch to continue in the current war; d. A Letter to Lord Robert Bertie, relating to his Conduct in the Mediterranean, and his Defence of Admiral Byng. R. Griffiths, 1757; pp. [4], 35. First edition. Bertie was stationed at Gibraltar and spoke in support of Byng at his court martial for the loss of Minorca. e. ALEXANDER, William, later self-styled 6th earl of Stirling. The Conduct of Major Gen. Shirley, Late General and Commander in Chief of His Majesty's Forces in North America. Briefly stated. R. and J. Dodsley, and M. Cooper, 1758; pp. viii, 131, half-title bound in. "relates to the War in America, the attack on Niagara, &c." (Howes). Howes 123; Sabin 80544; f. ALEXANDER, William. Memoirs of the Principal Transactions of the Last War between the English and French in North America ... R. & J. Dodsley, and M. Cooper, 1757; pp. viii, 102. First edition. The volumes have been professionally rebacked retaining original red and black morocco labels. There are five raised bands with gilt ruling and tooled design to the spine the boards are original and show the wear you would expect of books this age. Each book has the original green ribbon bookmark. Volume 1: Faded gilt title on spine; Some light soiling to end pages up to title page due to finger-prints; very light, very occasional foxing. Volume 2: Cracked label of volume number on spine; Front cover has 3 medium sized scratches. Volume 3: Repaired crack to rear board. It does not affect the binding and is only unsightly; Occasional light tanning. This is a famous 3 part set which contains a description and history of Amsterdam. It includes 78 plates, portraits, and maps. The Author, Jan Wagenaar, was the first historian to have access to the municipal archives, on which he based much of his book. (13 delen). First Edition. Half Calf Leather. Very Good.       London: Printed for John Bowles & Son, at the Black Horse in Cornhill, T. Bowles in St. Pauls Church Yard, Robt. Sayer at the Golden Buck in Fleet Street. J. Boydell, circa 1760. Engraving, printed on fine laid paper. Very good condition. 14 1/2 x 21 1/8 inches. 17 x 23 3/8 inches. A fine image of the verdant country estate of General Campbell, Baron Sundridge of Coombank. Born in Maidstone in 1735, William Woollett was one of the most renowned landscape engravers of his time and the first English engraver to achieve popular success in continental Europe. His artistic aptitude became apparent at an early age, and he was sent to London to train at St. Martin's Lane Academy and apprentice with the engraver and printseller John Tinney. Woollett began his career with a series of topographical views, but first truly distinguished himself as skilled engraver with the publication of his print of Richard Wilson's Destruction of the Children of Niobe. His copious plates after artists such as Stubbs, Vernet, and Claude proved so popular, that many of them were copied by engravers on the Continent. Beginning in 1766, he became an active member of the Society of Artists, where he served in a variety of positions. Although he specialized in landscapes, Woollett also engraved a number of marine and historical scenes including the print for which he is most famous, Death of General Wolfe after Benjamin West, and for which he was received the honorable title of Historical Engraver to His Majesty.         AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED

[King's Cliffe]. 14 June 1760.. One page, closely written in ink, on recto only of 21 x 17.5 cm lettersheet. with blots and corrections. Old folds, slight darkening along top margin, with vestiges of old mounting tabs on verso, otherwise very good. A fine letter from Law (1686 - 1761) to an admirer, written toward the end of his life, in productive and contemplative retirement in the village of his birth, ca. 150 words. He writes, in part: "I am very glad that yr Lady yr Friend has any Taste for my Books. I heartily Wish that they may help her to know & find, that wh. St. Peter knew ... For this is the Drift of all my Writings, to bring the Reader to St. Peter's Conviction, that Christ alone hath the words of Eternal Life, & therefore neither of pious men, or pious Books are any to be lik'd, but so far as they turn us from all Adherence to your Selves & their own Words, to Him who is the WORD ... always speaking within us as never man or Angel ever did, or can speak to us ...." He continues on noting that "In this place there is no Convenience of Board & Lodging as you enquire after ...," and suggests that such news might help prevent disappointment on the part of the recipient's friend. He closes: "I am with Much good Wishes to her & your Self, your Obedient Servant in Christ W. Law." Both as a controversialist in his defense of religious faith, and as an author of works of practical divinity, Law had a substantial influence on 18th century religion, particularly upon the theology and practice of John Wesley, "who reaped where Law had sown" - PMM. His best known work, A SERIOUS CALL TO A DEVOUT AND HOLY LIFE (1728) held major significance for readers as disparate as Samuel Johnson, George Whitefield, Edward Gibbon and Lord Lyttelton. Manuscript letters by Law are scarce in commerce, no examples appearing in American auction records in the last fifty years. PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN 187.

[Plan of Fort George on the Island of New Britain] Plan von Fort Georg auf der insel New Britannien, er Funden von Whilhem Dampiere, anno 1700

circa 1760. Gouache, painted on fine watermarked laid paper, in excellent condition. 20 x 27 7/8 inches. A rare fictional manuscript plan of Fort George on the Island of New Britain, Papua New Guinea. This fascinating manuscript map depicts an English fort on the island of New Britain off the coast of Papua New Guinea. Although the fort is identified as Fort George, there appears to be no historical reference to a fort by that name ever existing on New Britain. In fact the shape of the island and the complicated layout of the ramparts suggests that this representation is fictional rather than illustrative. The buildings, which are all identified in a numbered key, resemble medieval architecture rather than eighteenth century design, signifying that this fine painting is a product of the artist's romantic vision rather than a depiction of an actual place. It is likely that this magnificent painted plan was based on the accounts of William Dampier's travels published in his Voyages to New Holland (1703-9), which recounted his discovery of New Britain and the Dampier strait. Although fictional, this is a fascinating glimpse of eighteenth century cartography, which often relied more on written accounts and hypothetical theories than actual geographic surveys.
