        Edinburgh Evening Courant. June 4, 1760 - Sept. 7, 1761. Approx. 195 issues. Folio.

Edinburgh: printed for R. Fleming and Company. 1760-61 - 36 x 24cm. (14 x 9½ inches.) 4 pages. Thrice weekly. Price 3½d. Halfpenny stamp. First 2, and final issue defective, issue for June 22, 1761 with rectangular paper repair to central crease not affecting sense; trimmed close to top edge with occasional sl. loss, some occasional water staining; issues mostly good & clean. Half calf, spine rebacked with paper. Published between Dec. 1718 - Dec. 1871. ESTC P2048. Preceded by only a handful of papers, most notably the Edinburgh Gazette, 1699, and the Edinburgh Courant, 1705. The 4 pages usually comprise two sides of advertisements (occasionally illustrated), foreign news - defeat of the French in India, the March of Russian troops into Berlin and battles in America between the British and French armies and Indian tribes - and a leading article or correspondence. These letters and articles provide both domestic & foreign news: from the death and interment of George II (Oct. 29 - Nov. 12, 1760), the court-martial of Admiral Byng (Aug. 23, 1760) and ?the unhappy murder of Mr Mathews? (Sept. 10, 1760), to a ?description of an entertainment given by the Indians of North America? (Oct 25 1760), an ?extract from the celebrated life of Mr Handel (Aug. 4, 1760) and numerous letters from soldiers in America (Oct. 4, 1760). For those unfortunate enough to be bitten by a mad dog, a rather painful remedy is suggested by J. Parsons on August 30, 1760 - the rubbing of salt into the wound.

The Works of Mr William Shakespear Volume the Third

Printed for Hitch and Hawes et al., London; 1760. 32mo. This is the third volume of the complete works of shakespeare, a very rare 18th century volume edited by Sir Thomas Hanmer, based on the editions by Pope and Theobold. This volume contains the plays 'As You Like It', 'The Taming of the Shrew', 'All's Well That Ends Well' and 'Tweflth Night; or What You WIll'.This exceptional book is tightly bound in leather with gilt lettering to the spine. There is the inevitable rubbing to the covers for a book this age and some bumping and chipping to the spine ends and corners. However, this little book is in excellent condition. Internally, there is a very small, neat ownership inscription to the front free endpaper and some mild age spotting and toning to the endpapers and page extremities. Apart from this, there is only very slight age spotting on the main pages, which is remarkable for a book of this age. In all, this little book is indeed a rare find, being both a scarce volume and in such lovely condition. This is a must have for any literature collector or Shakespeare enthusiast and would make an excellent investment as it is sure to grow in value with time. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you would like further details on this beautiful book.

Historical Pastime or a New Game of the History of England from the Conquest to the Accession of George the Third.

Harris and Wallis Corner of St Paul's Churchyard London early 19th Century - Engraved children's game, dissected and mounted on linen, orginal hand-colour. Dimensions: 550 × 510mm (21.75 × 20 inches). An uncommon and early edition of a popular historical race game designed for the education of young children, beginning at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and ending with the accession of King George III in 1760. In an advertisement for the game, the author hoped that the 'utility and tendency of this Game must be obvious at first sight; for surly there cannot be a more agreeable study than History'. The game saw children using a teetotum, or spinning top, to progress through English history in a clockwise direction, with each child assigned a letter to play with and a set of rules that either rewarded or fined the players dependent on which of the 158 medallions they landed upon during the game. The rules for each of the medallions greatly differed, for example the player had to land on the Doomsday medallion in order to continue, and could not share medallions with other players apart from The Holy Land. Despite the monarchic character of the game, medallions also highlight controversy, such as Edward II's supposed love affair with Pierre Gaveston. The game also saw later Victorian editions, with the Queen in the centre. Available here, as usual, without the separately published booklet of rules, this example belongs to an early edition, quite possibly the first of 1803 which was published 6 years before King George III's Golden Jubilee - an event that set a precedent for the public celebrations we see today. Uncommon: COPAC lists only 7 locations.

Plan of Fort George on the Island of New Britain] Plan von Fort Georg auf der insel New Britannien, er Funden von Whilhem Dampiere, anno 1700

1760 - Gouache, painted on fine watermarked laid paper, in excellent condition. A rare fictional manuscript plan of Fort George on the Island of New Britain, Papua New Guinea. This fascinating manuscript map depicts an English fort on the island of New Britain off the coast of Papua New Guinea. Although the fort is identified as Fort George, there appears to be no historical reference to a fort by that name ever existing on New Britain. In fact the shape of the island and the complicated layout of the ramparts suggests that this representation is fictional rather than illustrative. The buildings, which are all identified in a numbered key, resemble medieval architecture rather than eighteenth century design, signifying that this fine painting is a product of the artist's romantic vision rather than a depiction of an actual place. It is likely that this magnificent painted plan was based on the accounts of William Dampier's travels published in his Voyages to New Holland (1703-9), which recounted his discovery of New Britain and the Dampier strait. Although fictional, this is a fascinating glimpse of eighteenth century cartography, which often relied more on written accounts and hypothetical theories than actual geographic surveys.

Vathek, by William Beckford, a new translation by Herbert B. Grimsditch, with ten illustrations by Marion V. Dorn. Bloomsbury, The Nonesuch Press, 1929.

Hardcover with brown paper covered boards and vellum spine. Marbled endpapers. The front displays a stamped and gilded decoration of Arabic typography. The spine contains the title information also in gold. The top edge is gilded. The corners and edges of the boards are slightly damaged. Overall the book is in good condition. No foxing. 16,5 x 23,2 cm, [8] 1-172 [4] pp. The second to last page shows that this book is number 856 of 1050 limited editions that were published in England. This work contains eight full-page lithographs and two small vignette by Marion V. Dorn. Vathek is an early example of a Gothic novel by the British writer William Beckford (1760-1844). The lead character, caliph Vathek, goes on several adventures to gain supernatural powers. Instead of obtaining these powers, Vathek is doomed to live in hell for eternity. On these quests he meets eerie individuals and travels to fantastical places. This work is a beautiful example of the oriental influence in the 19th century. The illustrations are made by the American illustrator and textile designer Marion Victoria Dorn (1896-1964). These expressive and rather modern illustrations are the only pictures by her that were published as book illustrations. The repetition and variation of the motifs demonstrate her powerful way of designing and can easily be converted into patterns for textiles or rugs. B2391

Jean and Madame de Ramponaux and their Coffee House.

(EN) In 1760 the café of the cabaretier Ramponeau became very popular among the lower classes for its bad but extremely cheap wine. In fact it was at one point so popular that members of the higher classes also started to flock to the place. After a year a cancelled contract with the theater producer Gaudon, Ramponeau fell into oblivion as fast as he had risen to fame. In two separated plates are represented the interior and the exterior of the café; at the bottom in a circular frame the portraits of Ramponeau in one print and that of his wife on the other"."Etching on paper; total each ca. 220 x 340 mm."

Map of Paraguay or the provinces settled by the Jesuits around 1732, first issued in Rome by Giovanni Petroschi (1715- 1766). Includes a key for identification of locations of the settlements of Spanish, newly-converted native Americans, and the non-Christian natives. Includes scale. The map is dedicated to Francisco Retz (1673-1750), Superior General of the Society of Jesus Between 1609 and 1780, the Roman Catholic Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) established an autonomous Christian Indian state on the territory of present-day Paraguay, Uruguay, and parts of Argentina and Brazil. After unsuccessful efforts to Christianize the warlike Guaycurú Indians of northeastern Paraguay, the Jesuits concentrated on organizing the Guaraní Indians into a series of reducciones (reductions or townships), in which a kind of communal living was practiced. The system of reductions was an attempt to correct earlier abuses, in which the Paraguayan Indians were transformed into virtual slaves who were compelled to work for the Spanish settlers. Copper engraving, hand coloured, perfectly executed restorations on verso, otherwise in good condition. Francoforte Frankfurt Dimensioni in mm. 536 X 680

Vue de Peking Capitale de la Chine, et de la Superbe Muraille qui la Separe de la Tartarie

Paris, 1760. Scarce original color vue optique depicting a panorama of the ancient walled city of Beijing which at the time was the seat of the Qing Dynasty, with hills and the Great Wall in the distance and an egg shell blue sky above. The print was made around the time that the Summer Palace, an outstanding example of Chinese landscape garden design, was built. In the foreground is a small dwelling with a supplicating traveler at the door; in the middle ground a main thoroughfare with horses and travelers and small dwellings; and in the background the walled city with grand buildings visible, and the hills and the Great Wall in the far distance appearing between the peaks. The print was intended to be viewed in a device consisting of a lens and a mirror, to create an illusion of depth; an early three dimensional effect. Below the title: "A Paris chez Beauvais rue St. Jacques proche de celle des Mathurins" and "Anriques Sculp." 11 1/2 x 15 3/4". With "N. 100" written in a contemporary hand above the top margin. Couple short closed tears otherwise very good. OCLC: 691504827 lists only one library holding a copy.
