Plan of Fort George on the Island of New Britain] Plan von Fort Georg auf der insel New Britannien, er Funden von Whilhem Dampiere, anno 1700

1760 - Gouache, painted on fine watermarked laid paper, in excellent condition. A rare fictional manuscript plan of Fort George on the Island of New Britain, Papua New Guinea. This fascinating manuscript map depicts an English fort on the island of New Britain off the coast of Papua New Guinea. Although the fort is identified as Fort George, there appears to be no historical reference to a fort by that name ever existing on New Britain. In fact the shape of the island and the complicated layout of the ramparts suggests that this representation is fictional rather than illustrative. The buildings, which are all identified in a numbered key, resemble medieval architecture rather than eighteenth century design, signifying that this fine painting is a product of the artist's romantic vision rather than a depiction of an actual place. It is likely that this magnificent painted plan was based on the accounts of William Dampier's travels published in his Voyages to New Holland (1703-9), which recounted his discovery of New Britain and the Dampier strait. Although fictional, this is a fascinating glimpse of eighteenth century cartography, which often relied more on written accounts and hypothetical theories than actual geographic surveys.

Vathek, by William Beckford, a new translation by Herbert B. Grimsditch, with ten illustrations by Marion V. Dorn. Bloomsbury, The Nonesuch Press, 1929.

Hardcover with brown paper covered boards and vellum spine. Marbled endpapers. The front displays a stamped and gilded decoration of Arabic typography. The spine contains the title information also in gold. The top edge is gilded. The corners and edges of the boards are slightly damaged. Overall the book is in good condition. No foxing. 16,5 x 23,2 cm, [8] 1-172 [4] pp. The second to last page shows that this book is number 856 of 1050 limited editions that were published in England. This work contains eight full-page lithographs and two small vignette by Marion V. Dorn. Vathek is an early example of a Gothic novel by the British writer William Beckford (1760-1844). The lead character, caliph Vathek, goes on several adventures to gain supernatural powers. Instead of obtaining these powers, Vathek is doomed to live in hell for eternity. On these quests he meets eerie individuals and travels to fantastical places. This work is a beautiful example of the oriental influence in the 19th century. The illustrations are made by the American illustrator and textile designer Marion Victoria Dorn (1896-1964). These expressive and rather modern illustrations are the only pictures by her that were published as book illustrations. The repetition and variation of the motifs demonstrate her powerful way of designing and can easily be converted into patterns for textiles or rugs. B2391

Jean and Madame de Ramponaux and their Coffee House.

(EN) In 1760 the café of the cabaretier Ramponeau became very popular among the lower classes for its bad but extremely cheap wine. In fact it was at one point so popular that members of the higher classes also started to flock to the place. After a year a cancelled contract with the theater producer Gaudon, Ramponeau fell into oblivion as fast as he had risen to fame. In two separated plates are represented the interior and the exterior of the café; at the bottom in a circular frame the portraits of Ramponeau in one print and that of his wife on the other"."Etching on paper; total each ca. 220 x 340 mm."

Map of Paraguay or the provinces settled by the Jesuits around 1732, first issued in Rome by Giovanni Petroschi (1715- 1766). Includes a key for identification of locations of the settlements of Spanish, newly-converted native Americans, and the non-Christian natives. Includes scale. The map is dedicated to Francisco Retz (1673-1750), Superior General of the Society of Jesus Between 1609 and 1780, the Roman Catholic Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) established an autonomous Christian Indian state on the territory of present-day Paraguay, Uruguay, and parts of Argentina and Brazil. After unsuccessful efforts to Christianize the warlike Guaycurú Indians of northeastern Paraguay, the Jesuits concentrated on organizing the Guaraní Indians into a series of reducciones (reductions or townships), in which a kind of communal living was practiced. The system of reductions was an attempt to correct earlier abuses, in which the Paraguayan Indians were transformed into virtual slaves who were compelled to work for the Spanish settlers. Copper engraving, hand coloured, perfectly executed restorations on verso, otherwise in good condition. Francoforte Frankfurt Dimensioni in mm. 536 X 680

Paris, 1760. Scarce original color vue optique depicting a panorama of the ancient walled city of Beijing which at the time was the seat of the Qing Dynasty, with hills and the Great Wall in the distance and an egg shell blue sky above. The print was made around the time that the Summer Palace, an outstanding example of Chinese landscape garden design, was built. In the foreground is a small dwelling with a supplicating traveler at the door; in the middle ground a main thoroughfare with horses and travelers and small dwellings; and in the background the walled city with grand buildings visible, and the hills and the Great Wall in the far distance appearing between the peaks. The print was intended to be viewed in a device consisting of a lens and a mirror, to create an illusion of depth; an early three dimensional effect. Below the title: "A Paris chez Beauvais rue St. Jacques proche de celle des Mathurins" and "Anriques Sculp." 11 1/2 x 15 3/4". With "N. 100" written in a contemporary hand above the top margin. Couple short closed tears otherwise very good. OCLC: 691504827 lists only one library holding a copy.         [Manuscript Copy] Facillima Methodus Delineandi Omnes Humani Corporis. Nouveau Livre du Dessein Qui Continent XXV Figures Dessinee Par le Celebre Jean Baptista Piazzeta

Full Vellum. Very Good. N.d., but late 18th century, after the publication of the original work in 1760, published in Venezia by Remondi. Large 8vo, 25 by 20 cm. 25 pen and ink pages of illustration. These begin with the elaborate pen and ink Baroque title page, with architectural decoration, followed by page showing drawings of hands, a second title with what we presume the one more fully original work by the copyist of seraphs holding up drapery with the title and a woman painter working before an easel, and other illustrative decoration (a broken sculpted head on the ground, etc.). Then 23 pages of pen and ink nude male studies, the figures very Michelangelo-esque in the musculature, and their overall sculptural quality. We would speculate that this copyist was in fact a woman, based on the second title illustration. This particular illustration is delightful, if the human figure itself doesn't have quite the polished execution of the copied material. Inked title on the vellum spine. The vellum is quite soiled. Otherwise, the paper within is of high quality and clean.

Paris:: H.L. Guerin & L.F. Delatour, 1760.. 4to. xviii, [2], 368 pp. Engraved printer's device on title-page, 7 engraved folding plates. Contemporary full mottled calf, raised bands, gilt-stamped spine panels and spine title; a few minor cover scars. Fine. FIRST EDITION. Bouguer, a brilliant French mathematician, astronomer and geophysicist, a child prodigy trained by his father, made some of the earliest recorded measurements in photometry. This is his final (and posthumous) work by the “father of photometry.” ¶ In 1729 he had published Essai d'optique sur la gradation de la lumière, the object of which was to define the quantity of light lost by passing through a given extent of the atmosphere, and he became the first known discoverer of what is now more commonly known as the Beer-Lambert law. Bouguer found the light of the sun to be 300 times more intense than that of the moon, and thus made some of the earliest measurements in photometry. “Just before he died, Bouguer completed a much larger book [this one] on photometry, the Traité d'optique sur la gradation de la lumiere... The Traité goes far beyond the Essai [d'optique sur la gradation de la lumière, (1729)], describing a number of ingenious kinds of photometers, including a method of goniophotometry, and even attempting an elaborate theory of the reflection of light from rough surfaces, although this was not successful. The third and last part of the book, however, gives a valid elementary theory of the horizontal visual range through an obscuring atmosphere, arriving at a law, usually credited to H. Koschmieder, considered to belong to the twentieth century. It is fair to consider Pierre Bouguer not only the inventor of the photometer but also the founder of an important branch of atmospheric optics.” [DSB]. ¶ Bouguer's father was Jean Bouguer, a well-known hydrographer who authored a seminal treatise on navigation. Upon his father's death, Pierre—at age 15—succeeded the elder Bouguer as royal professor of hydrography. Pierre also wrote on hydrography. ¶ Provenance: From the Alan deHaas collection [no markings]. ¶ DSB Vol. II, pp. 343-44; Graesse I, 510; Norman 286; Wolf II, 167ff.

A New Chart of the River St Laurence, from the Island of Anticosti To the Falls of Richelieu: With all the islands, rocks, shoals, and soundings, also particular directions for navigating the river with safety. Taken by Order of Charles Saunders, Esqr. Vice-Admiral of the Blue and Commander in Chief of His Majesty's Ships in the Expedition against Quebec in 1759. This chart was drawn from particular surveys of the following places; and published for the use of British navigators, by command of the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty Charles Saunder, Pall Mall, May 1st., 1760.

Published by Command of The Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty,, London, 1760 - First state of Cook's seminal map of the St Laurence River Engraved chart in 12 sheets, dissected and laid on linen. Modern marbled paper slipcase, embossed red morocco title label. First state of Cook's seminal map of the St Laurence River Captain Cook's famous chart. The rare first state of the most important published chart for the river and Gulf of St Lawrence of the eighteenth century. This remarkable chart, over seven feet long, was so accurate that it "became the standard guide not only for the navy but for all seamen using the great waterway" (Beaglehole). In preparation for an amphibious attack on Quebec, during the French and Indian War, the British initially relied on captured French charts but, in view of the treacherous nature of stretches of the river, and lack of first-hand knowledge of the river, assembled a distinguished team of military surveyors, notably Samuel Holland, Joseph Frederick Wallet des Barres and, later to eclipse them all, the young James Cook. Although the impetus for this chart is credited to Charles Saunders, commander of the fleet at Quebec, much of the work was carried out under the auspices of Vice-Admiral Philip Durell, himself a distinguished hydrographer, who was entrusted with the task of keeping British shipping and supplies moving up- and down-river, for which ever more accurate charts were required. The survey materials were taken back to England by Admiral Saunders and given to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, who passed them to Thomas Jefferys, mapmaker to the British government, for publication. Saunders presented examples to the King and the Prince of Wales in May 1760. Cook's extensive and accurate work on this chart secured him a posting to survey the coasts of Newfoundland, which brought his name to the fore when the Admiralty was looking for a highly qualified naval officer to command a scientific voyage to the Pacific. Cook was sent to America in 1757, at the beginning of the Seven Years War. he was then just a master on HMS Pembroke. He took part in the capture of Louisbourg, where he learnt surveying and chartmaking from Samuel Holland. His chart of the St Laurence River was one of his earliest efforts. The St Laurence River was a key Cook's cartographic skill gained him notice amongst his superiors, and his commander Admiral Sir Charles Saunders arranged for them to be published in England. Following the fall of Louisbourg the British wintered in Halifax but in May 1759 set off up the St. Lawrence River to capture the main French stronghold of Quebec. Cook's ship assisted with the ferrying of troops and the charting of the St.Lawrence River in preparation for the assault on Quebec. The town fell to the British in September 1759 after an assault by the army of General Wolfe. "On June 17, 1755, ranked as an able-bodied seaman, Cook reported for naval service at Wapping, part of the dock lands of East London, on the River Thames. During the Seven Years' War between England and France, Cook served on several ships, including the HMS Eagle under Sir Hugh Palliser (1722–1796), who became another keen supporter of the seaman and his talents. He gave Cook opportunities for special instruction in navigation and charting; Cook was promoted to full master rank within two years. In the St. Lawrence River in Canada in the winter and early spring of 1758–1759, he undertook with others a detailed navigational survey that was critical in the successful September landing of the British troops under General James Wolfe that defeated the French at Quebec City. The resulting chart, "A New Chart of the River St. Laurence: From the Island of Anticosti to the Falls of Richelieu: With All the Islands, Rocks, Shoals, and Soundings, also Particular Directions for Navigating the River with Safety; Taken by the Order of Charles Saunders, Esqr. Leonard, 1666. First edition of the catalogue of the first of two print collections formed by Marolles (1600-81), abbot of Villeloin and man of letters. He began acquiring prints in 1626 and by 1644, his collecting activities governed his life. At that time there was little competition, and Marolles bought several important collections en bloc, including those of Delorme, Maugis, Kerver, Petau, La Reynie, and others. His first collection amounted to 123,400 separate prints by more than 6000 print makers, mounted in 400 large volumes and 141 smaller ones. It was acquired in the name of the King by Colbert in 1667 for 28,000 livres. This was the largest and finest collection ever formed up to that time and is today the foundation of the Bibliothèque Nationale's Department of Prints. Marolles assembled "the first print collection on the grand scale…[and]…was among the first of the private collectors in history to sacrifice his life and fortune to his passion. He may truly be called the 'Father of Print Collecting'…by the very scope of his activity, and his interest in separating his many thousands of pieces of paper into artist schools, Marolles lifted the printed picture from a by-path of typography to being one of the major prizes of the born collector."-Taylor, The Taste of Angels: A History of Art Collecting. Fine copy, handsomely bound. Stamp on title of the Abbey of St. Germain de Près. Cipher "HDD" on title (Lugt 739). This is the stamp of Pierre Defer (1798-1870), expert to King Louis Philippe, and his nephew Henri Dumesnil (1823-98), who inherited Defer's collection. Defer formed an important private collection of prints and drawings in the first half of the 19th century. He devoted much of his life to the study of prints and drawings and is best remembered for his unfinished Catalogue général des Ventes Publiques de Tableaux et d'estampes. ❧ Besterman, Old Art Books, pp. 71-72. Editio quarta.

in aedibus academicis excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis, Glasguae [Glasgow] 1760 - 4to, pp. [ii], xii, 307, [1]. Contemporary French red morocco, boards bordered with a triple gilt rule, spine divided by gilt rolls, orange morocco label, other compartments with central acorn tools and corner sprays all gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Corners a little worn (one more chipped) and several touched up with red dye, joints a touch rubbed and head of spine just slightly worn. Armorial bookplate with slogan 'Pro Republica' (Nicholson of Balrath, County Meath) above booklabel with the initials 'WRHJ' (i.e. Wynne Rice Hugh Jeudwine). The luxurious 'large-paper' quarto imposition - using the same setting of text as the octavo, and therefore capaciously-margined - of the fourth Foulis edition of Horace, following on from the 1744 'Immaculate' edition and reprints of 1750 and 1756 (the latter a medal-winning printing). The process of rearranging the frames has not gone entirely smoothly, with pages 20 (C2v) and 24 (C4v) swapped. This copy appears to have bounced around the British Isles and nearby points in Europe somewhat, having been bound in France not long after its printing in Scotland, and later belonging to collections in Ireland and England. The idea of irritability indicates a property that permits the different parts of the living body to react independently from the conscious mind, the central nervous system, and the whole of the organism. Vital forces, notably the capacity to respond to stimulation, are, so to speak, decentered, even to the point that they become the characteristic property of the structural element of the body, the elementary fiber.
