(13 delen).

- Smith E.15; Fromm 12305; Ziegenfuß I 503.

Rome 1760 - Hind 56 (1st state)John Wilton-Ely plate 152From the important series "Veduta de Roma" View of the Arch of Constantine and the Flavian Amphitheater, called the Coleosseum" (John Wilton-Ely)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: John Wilton-Ely. Giovanni Battista Piranesi: The Complete Etchi

Lettres et Memoires Pour servir a L'histoire Naturelle, Civile et Politique Du Cap Breton, Depuis Son Etablissment Jusqu'a La Reprise De Cette Isle Par Les Anglois En 1758.

Pierre grosse and Jean Nourse, The Hague and London 1760 - 12mo., (6 4/8 x 4 inches). Half-title. Contemporary French mottled calf, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in one, the others decorated with small floral tools (head of the spine chipped with minor loss and lower joint just starting, corners worn with minor loss). First Edition of "One of the few reliable published sources.about the French in Acadia during the 18th century"(DCB). "Pichon came to Canada from France in 1751 as secretary (till 1753) to the governor of Cape Breton (Jean-Louis de Raymond); he served in the vicinity till 1758.(TPL). "Pichon's work, composed in the form of letters written from Louisbourg, beginning in 1752 and ending with the capitulation of that fortress to the English in 1758, constitutes one of the few reliable published sources about the French in Acadia during the 18th century"(DCB). The letters provide a clear and accurate description of Ile Saint-Jean (Prince Edward Island), the trade with New England, the manners and customs of the Micmac and Malecite Indians, the French government in Louisbourg, military events and the causes of the war. One of Pichon's major responsibilities during his brief appointment was preparing the governor's reports to France, a task which allowed him to gather much valuable information he was to use in the writing of this book. Sent to Fort Beausejour (Chignecto), in 1753 he succumbed to the bribes of the commanding officer at Fort Lawrence, Captain George Scott and for more than a year engaged in espionage and subterfuge against the French under the assumed name Tyrell. The information he sold to Scott apparently enabled Col. Robert Monckton to capture the French fort at Chignecto in 1755. After some time spent as a prisoner of war, Pichon retired to England, where he was awarded a pension. Lande 710; Sabin 62610; Staton & Tremaine/TPL 274. Bright and clean. Contemporary ownership notation on verso of each card. Very good. In a solander case. In each of the three known sets, the imprint of the publisher appears printed on the whole sheet of cards. For the present set, this information was lost when the sheet was cut to form the present fifty-three separate cards. An attractive series of playing cards, in lovely condition. Des Semis et Plantations des Arbres, et de leur culture ; ou méthode pour multiplier et élever les arbres, les planter en massifs et en avenues ; former les forets et les bois ; les entretenir, et rétablir ceux qui sont dégradés : faisant partie du Traité complet des bois et des forêts

Paris: H. L Guérin et L. F. Delatour, 1760. First edition. 4to. With 17 folding plates. lxxx, 383, 27, 10 pp. Contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards, uncut. Some rubbing to extremities, plates XIII & XV significantly stained, ptherwise both text and plates are clean, and sound; overall, a fresh copy. Nissen 545; Raphael, Sylva, #34 . Important work on the cultivation of trees by this prolific 18th-century polymath abd savant (1700-1782), member of the Royal Academy, who published over 100 separate during his prolific lifetime, on a wife range of subjects which engaged his passions for chemistry, botany, agronomy and naval architecture. His most important contribution to agriculture was perhaps his introduction of the methods of cultivation of Jethro Tull into France, with his publication in of TRAITÉ DE LA CULTURE DES TERRES (1750-1761). But Duhamel was above all a great advocate of the Tree in France, and his numerous works on the cultivations of trees and shrubs, as well as forests and forest maintenance, are mong his most important contributions. Previous to this work, Duhamel had published his TRAITÉ DES ARBRES ET ARBUSTES QUI SE CULTIVENT EN FRANCE (1755); and LA PHYSIQUE DES ARBRES (1758). This continuation of "notre travail sur les Forêts," the author says in his Preface, is, in this case, "purement pratique"; and his aim to place simplified methods of cultivation "within the reach of all sorts of readers." He divides his work into six books: (1) on terrain, exposure, climate, choice on trees; (2) Different methods of propagating trees; (3) Care of young trees; (4) Transplanting; (5) Forests; (6) Maintenance of Woods and Revitalization of damaged Forests. illustrated by the fine line engravings, this is indeed the work Duhamel most intended for a practical audience

DSB. DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU, Henri-Louis, (1700-1782). His major interest, and contribution to technology and society, was in agriculture. The first half of the eighteenth century had witnessed the beginning of a technological renaissance in agriculture, chiefly in England, where it was notably celebrated in the writings of Jethro Tull, whose major work, Horse-Hoeing Husbandry, was published in 1733. Although the ideas of Tull and Duhamel enjoyed substantial popularity among a progressive group of French landowners, the opposition - either in the form of active criticism or in the passive inertia of an almost medieval agrarian society - was too strong for France to enjoy the rapid agricultural changes which occurred in England and, shortly after, in Scotland. However, enough progress was made for Duhamel to receive recognition for his pioneering work during his lifetime. (DSB). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

um 1760 - 15 Bl. Beschreibungen, 15 Orig.- Kuperstiche (39,5 x 26 cm), Privat-Kart.-Mappe., Min gebräunt, tadellos Text. franz.

Interior of the Church of Our Lady of the Angels called the Charterhouse, which was once the principal room of the Baths of Diocletian. Copperprint. Rome 1760. 50x81 cm. (Vidute de Roma). Printed on strong paper.. When Piranesi arrived in Rome in the year 1740 he was instantly impressed by the splendour of the antique ruins in the ancient city. For almost a year he was an apprentice in the studio of Guiseppe Vasi, his later colleague and rival, where he learned the art of engraving copper plates. He began his extremely successful career depicting Rome's architectural gems (antique and contemporary) on extra large-scale single sheets: the famous "Vedute di Roma" (Views of Rome). Piranesi was an obsessed artist. Relentlessly he added plates, sometimes variations of former ones, to the collection, until, at the end of his life, there was a total of 135 views showing the majesty and the splendour of the once powerful capital of the Roman empire.

Paris: H. L Guérin et L. F. Delatour, 1760 - Important work on the cultivation of trees by this prolific 18th-century polymath abd savant (1700-1782), member of the Royal Academy, who published over 100 separate during his prolific lifetime, on a wife range of subjects which engaged his passions for chemistry, botany, agronomy and naval architecture. This continuation of "notre travail sur les Forêts," the author says in his Preface, is, in this case, "purement pratique"; and his aim to place simplified methods of cultivation "within the reach of all sorts of readers." He divides his work into six books: (1) on terrain, exposure, climate, choice on trees; (2) Different methods of propagating trees; (3) Care of young trees; (4) Transplanting; (5) Forests; (6) Maintenance of Woods and Revitalization of damaged Forests. illustrated by the fine line engravings, this is indeed the work Duhamel most intended for a practical audience First edition. Sophokles. Erstes Buch. Von dem Leben des Dichters. // [Zweiter Titel:] Gotthold Ephraim Lessings Leben des Sophokles. Herausgegeben von JOHANN JOACHIM ESCHENBURG. Berlin, bey Christian Friedrich Voß und Sohn 1790.

Berlin, bey Christian Friedrich Voß 1760 - 8°. Titel, VIII,(3-) 172 S. . Erste Ausgabe (Muncker S.393 u. 498; Goedeke IV/I,386,88).

Libraires Affocies 1760 - Paris, 1760. Nouvelle Edition, revue & corrigee. 12 Volumes, 12mo, contemporary mottled calf, gilt lettered spine-labels (rubbed), some moderate wear, contemporary writing on preliminary pages of a volume and a few chips to leather but still in very good condition. A very scarce early complete set of Florent Carton Dancourt's dramatic works. The plays of Dancourt are faithful descriptions of the manners of the time, and as such have real historical value. The characters are drawn with a realistic touch that led to his being styled by Charles Palissot the Teniers of comedy. He is very successful in his delineation of low life, and especially of the peasantry. The dialogue is sparkling, witty and natural. Many of the incidents of his plots were derived from actual occurrences in the fast and scandalous life of the period, and several of his characters were drawn from well-known personages of the day. Most of the plays incline to the type of farce rather than of pure comedy. Voltaire defined his talent in the words: "What Regnard was in respect to Moliere in the high comedy, Dancourt was in the farce." - Seventeen folding engraved plates & engraved vignettes. 2 p.l., lxxx, 383, 27, 10 pp. Large 4to, cont. marbled calf (corners a little worn, upper joint with short crack at foot), triple gilt fillet round sides, spine nicely gilt, a.e.g., red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: H.L. Guerin & L.F. Delatour, 1760. First edition and an attractive copy, complete with the two Additions. Duhamel (1700-82), French polymath, made notable contributions in agronomy, chemistry, botany, and naval technology. His major interest and contribution to technology and society was in agriculture. Duhamel "adapted Tull’s system to France based on his own wide reading in French agronomy and on original experiments."–D.S.B., IV, p. 224. One of Duhamel’s main interests was the cultivation and use of timber; this is one of his chief books on the subject. "The sections of the book discuss the soil, the climate, and the choice of trees; their propagation; nursery gardens; planting; forests; and maintenance and re-afforestation, with all instructions based firmly on the author’s long experience of forestry."–Raphael, An Oak Spring Sylva, 34. The attractive plates depict methods of grafting, agricultural implements, etc. Fine copy. 19th-century bookplate of F. Allard. ? Stafleu & Cowan 1545. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Interest of Great Britain considered, with Regard to her Colonies, and the Acquisitions of Canada and Guadeloupe. To which are added, Observations concerning the Increase of Mankind, Peopling those Countries, &c.

London: printed for T. Becket, 1760 - 7 pamphlets bound in one volume, octavo (190 × 128 mm). Franklin: pp. [2], 58, including the additional leaf at the end. Late 19th-century half calf, marbled boards, red morocco label, narrow bands, gilt lozenges to compartments, marbled endpapers. A little rubbed, contents variably soiled and browned; half-title and title of item (b) torn, no loss of text, half-title laid down, last leaf of the same torn across and with an old sewn repair backed with paper; final leaf of Franklin slightly crumpled and torn at the inner margin, loss of a few characters but overall very good. Full-page table to item (e). First edition of Franklin's "Canada Pamphlet", an important contribution to the debate on the relative merits of the retention of Canada or sugar-rich Guadeloupe following the impending victory in the Seven Years' War. Although contemporary opinion credited Franklin – this copy is annotated "by Mr. Frankland [sic] of America" on the title page – 19th-century scholarship attributed the pamphlet to Richard Jackson. However, the publication of The Papers of Benjamin Franklin returned "The Canada Pamphlet" to the canon: "in recent years Franklin's authorship has been re-established in the minds of all but a few doubters, though, as Franklin himself seems to have acknowledged, he received some help from his friend and ally Jackson. With this attribution to Franklin the present editors wholly concur" (Papers 9:53). As well as arguing strongly for the retention of Canada, in this, "one of his most important publications in pamphlet form", Franklin also discusses the potential problems of government that might attend the expansion of the colonies, but doubts their ability to act in concert. Further growth "may render them dangerous. Of this I own, I have not the least conception, when I consider that we have already fourteen separate governments Those we now have, are not only under different governors, but have different forms of government, different laws, different interests, and some of them different religious persuasions and different manners. Their jealousy of each other is so great that however necessary an union of the colonies has long been, for their common defence and security against their enemies, they have never been able to effect such an union among themselves Nothing but the immediate command of the crown has been able to produce even the imperfect union but lately seen there". From the library of the 5th Earl of Rosebery, Liberal prime minister and bibliophile, whose collecting was marked by a sensitivity to provenance, the present volume with the armorial bookplate of the antiquary and collector James Maidment reimposed verso of the front free endpaper. A prominent figure in Scottish literary circles, Maidment was a friend of Sir Walter Scott, and himself an author: "his publications mainly of editions of Scottish historical, literary, genealogical, and antiquarian material were very numerous. Many were anonymous, and most were privately printed in small editions, some at least for their bawdy or erotic content" (ODNB). The sale of his extensive library in over 5,000 lots occupied 15 sessions in April and May 1880, raising about £4,500. The other six items in this pamphlet volume relate to Britain's involvement in mid-18th century conflicts worldwide, including a number of uncommon and important pieces, all printed in London: a. A Letter to the Most Noble Thomas, Duke of Newcastle, on certain Points of the last Importance to these Nations H. Whitridge, 1746; pp. [2], 38. First edition; an analysis of the causes of the second Jacobite rebellion; b. EGMONT, John Perceval, Earl of. An Examination of the Principles, and an Enquiry into the Conduct of the Two B*****rs The Fifth Edition, reviewed and corrected. A. Price, 1749; pp. [4], 79, half-title bound in. A RARE, IMPORTANT AND VERY BEAUTIFUL EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC OF ITALIAN LITERATURE. The edition has long been considered one of the richest and most magnificent of the many editions of Tasso printed over the centuries. Poet, prose writer and literary theorist, Tasso was successor to and deviator from the tradition of Boiardo and Ariosto, he gave to the court of Ferrara the third of the great ottava rima epic romances celebrating the Este ancestry, Gerusalemme Liberata, and the purest example of Renaissance pastoral drama, Aminta. Even before its end, his life became a legend of poetic madness and wandering. Born in Sorrento, he shared the political exile of his father, Bernardo, and began his literary studies and his long experience of Italian courts in Urbino. He attended the universities of Padua and of Bologna, at 18 published Rinaldo, a chivalric poem in 12 cantos, and in 1565 took service with Cardinal Luigi d'Este. Although he completed the Liberata in 1575, Tasso was never to be satisfied with it in relation to neo-Aristotelian canons of epic poetry or to Counter-Reformation religious orthodoxy, and restlessly he consulted scholars on one score and ecclesiastical inquisitors on the other. In 1577 he was imprisoned for a paranoid display of violence in the presence of Lucrezia d'Este. He escaped to the south but, following another outburst on his return to Ferrara in 1579, was shut up in the hospital of S. Anna, to remain there until 1586. The Liberata was finally published in 1581, but Tasso continued to regard the poem as unfinished while it circulated in several editions from that year on. Released from S. Anna, he went to Mantua under the protection of Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga, and thence into a ceaseless vagabondage that took him to Genoa, Rome, Naples and Florence. He received hospitality from religious orders and academies, from the Medici, from the marquis Giambattista Manso, and from Pope Clement VIII and his nephew, to whom Tasso dedicated the only authorized version of his epic, much reworked and retitled.
