1760 - Nuremberg, Raspe, c.1760. Original colour. 220 x 370mm. Stitch holes in left margin. A scarce map of the French Fort St Louis, Senegal, published in Raspe's 'Schau Platz des gegenwaertigen Kriegs' (Plates illustrating the Current Wars). It was the first permanent French settlement in Africa, an important trading post for slaves, hides, beeswax & ambergris. As such it became a target for the British during the Seven Years' War. In a plan devised by an American merchant, Thomas Cumming, two warships and 200 men suprised the French and took it without loss, striking a serious blow to the French economy. The British kept St Louis at the end of the war but the French recaptured it in 1779 during the American War of Independence and Britain signed it away in the 1783 Treaty of Paris.

        Giphantie

n.p., Babylone (Paris) 1760 - Octavo, with four engraved plates by Cochin after Desfriches illustrating the second work "Mon Odyssée ou le Journal de Mon Retour de Saintonge"; contemporary mottled calf, slightly worn, spine gilt with red label. First edition: a marvellous utopian community in Africa, prefiguring the uses of photography, television and the telephone. Tiphaigne de la Roche (1729-1774) a physician and polymath, wrote a series of works invested with the Enlightenment spirit of philosophical enthusiasm. In Giphantie (an anagram of the author's name) the protagonist is lifted semi-conscious and transported by air to an edenic garden, where a charming spirit guide shows him around their 'vaguely utopian society' (Lewis). Interestingly, the continuing importance of the book is largely due to the succession of technical devices which are taken for granted on the island, including prototype televisions and telephones. The work is particularly remembered for one intriguing passage which has been taken as an important foundation moment in the proto-history of photography. Thus, the English edition of 1761: 'You know that the rays of light, reflected from different bodies, form a picture, and paint the image reflected on all polished surfaces, for instance, on the retina of the eye, on water, and on glass. The elementary spirits have sought to fix these fleeting images?'. This work is bound together with Pierre Honoré Robbe de Beauveset's rococo poem in four verses Mon Odyssée ou le Journal de Mon Retour de Saintonge (La Haye, 1760), illustrated with four engraved plates. De Beauveset was an influential French writer known for his gentle satires and erotic works. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Vindiciae typographicae

, 1760. 1760. Strassburg, Joh. Gothofr. Bauer, 1760. 2 parts, 1 vol. 4to. (VI), 120 + 42, (10) pp. followed by 7 fold-out plates with engr. facs. small 4to., contemporary paper-covered, paper spine label. Two bookseller labels mounted on front pastedown along with the bookplate of Edwin Osgood Grolier. Signed by Wilberforce Eames on front pastedown. Bookplate of library (stamped withdrawn) on free endpaper. Covers rubbed with paper covering on hinges cracked. First, probably only edition of this influential monograph on Gutenberg and the origins of printing. Gutenberg was already experimenting with printing in Strassburg, when Andreas Dritzehn, one of his partners died. His heirs demanded to be admitted to the secrets of the partnership which very probably included printing. Gutenberg sucessfully contested the claim. The records were first published in Schoepflin's book, but the original documents were unfortunately destroyed in the Prussian bombardment of Strassburg in 1870...A famous contribution to the history of the origin of printing. The Documenta typographicarum originum ex Argentinensibus tabulariis et bibliothecis nunc primum edita (contained in the second part) are still of interest. The author claims that Strassburg was the town where the cradle of printing-art has stood.... important work... he (Schoepflin) may be said to have contributed more to the history of the origin of the invention than any of his predecessors. [Cf. Bigmore & Wyman II, pp. 318-323]. (Ruppel 90ff). Schoepflin, 1694-1771, historiographer to Louis XIV, was an ardent bibliophile and champion of Gutenberg's claims at a time when the Costerian theory peaked. Presumably Herr Schoepflin unearthed certain documents which indubitably proved Gutenberg the inventor of printing by movable type. These documents, lost by fire and bombardment of Strasbourg, contained material relative to the Gutenberg lawsuit of 1439. The plates at the end are reproductions of leaves from Mentel imprints: Bible, Psalter, Cicea, as well as a reproduction of a List attributed to Peter von Gernsheim written in Paris 1449.

Haarlem, C.H. Bohn, 1760. 8vo. With frontispiece folding engraved plate of a hyacinth. 19th-century boards.

Cat. Lindley Libr., p. 231; Krelage, p. 17 etc.; cf. BMC NH, p. 956. First edition of a treatise on the cultivation of bulb flowers, signed by the author. The Dutch export of bulbs began to develop in the 17th century. Foreigners held the view that only the Dutch climate and soil were suitable for the cultivation of bulbs and that only Dutch florists possessed the necessary knowledge for this craft. European courts, with nobility and gentility following suit, bought their bulbs directly from Holland, with Haarlem as centre for this trade. Nicolaas van Kampen was among the circa 10 Haarlem florists who monopolized this lucrative business. He treats the hyacinth, the most popular bulb in the 18th century and a favourite of an important trendsetter like Madame de Pompadour, the tulip, the Persian buttercup and the anemone as well as other flowers.Curiously, our copy contains the author's signature on the verso of the title with the text "Les auteurs de cet ouvrage désavoüent tous les Exemplaires qui ne seront pas signés de leur propre Main." The Traité des fleurs a oignons was translated into English and German.Boards damaged; a good, untrimmed copy from the library of J.H. Krelage.

        TRAITE DES MINES. Manuscrit.

1760 - [VAUBAN]. [LE CHEVALIER FOLARD]. [HERMANN, Jacob]. [SURIREY DE SAINT-REMY]. TRAITE DES MINES. Manuscrit. Vers 1760. 250 X 195 mm. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The prelims and pages 1-4 inclusive are, sadly, lacking, making it difficult to definitely identify which this is of the several editions published between 1720 and 1764, although it does include the County maps. The maps have not been coloured, the pages appear to be untrimmed, and minor chipping of the edges of a few pages has been professionally repaired. The spine and covers appear to be an early rebinding, with the original (?) tooled leather covers laid on. The end papers are quite new. Overall, a nice collectible copy.       Krakow, Collegio Jurridico 1760.. 8°. 18 Bll. (A-E2). Ln. Tit. gestemp..
