Le Berger Recompensé [The Shepherd Repaid]

Paris: chéz L'Auteur reu St. Jacques au dessus des Jacobins, 1760. A lovely pastoral print after the celebrated French Rococo artist Francois Boucher. Francois Boucher (1703-1770) was one of the most versatile and influential French artists of the eighteenth century. He not only decorated palaces and private residences, but also painted portraits, landscapes, and mythological scenes; and designed opera sets, porcelains, and tapestries. He was a prolific painter and draftsman and he excelled in cabinet-sized paintings for collectors, many of which were reproduced in print in an effort to satisfy the demands of eager connoisseurs. He began his career producing reproductive engravings of Watteau's paintings, but he quickly became one of the most fashionable artists in Paris. He was favoured by the King's mistress, Madame du Pompadour, and quickly became "premier peintre" to Louis XV. Boucher rejuvenated the 'pastoral tradition' in French art, and was instrumental in developing the Rococo style which characterized French art during Louis XV's reign. This sublime print by the Parisian engraver Robert Gaillard is an evocative example of Boucher's sumptuous style of painting. A reclining shepherd has been playing the pipes beside the path where a pretty peasant girl passes by. They share a powerful gaze, and the girl offers him a wreath of spring flowers. The image is strikingly vibrant. Le Blanc, Manuel de L'Amateur D'Estampes , p. 261, no.27. Engraving. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of some light foxing. Creases on side and bottom of sheet where it has been folded. Trimmed within the platemark on the upper margin. Image size: 17 1/4 x 14 3/16 inches.

A View of Coombank near Sevenoak in Kent, the Seat of the Honble. Lieutt. Genl. Campbell / Veüe de Coombank, dans la Comté de Kent. Maison de L'honble. Lieutt. Genl. Campbell

Printed for John Bowles & Son, at the Black Horse in Cornhill, T. Bowles in St. Pauls Church Yard, Robt. Sayer at the Golden Buck in Fleet Street. J. Boydell, London 1760 - A fine image of the verdant country estate of General Campbell, Baron Sundridge of Coombank. Born in Maidstone in 1735, William Woollett was one of the most renowned landscape engravers of his time and the first English engraver to achieve popular success in continental Europe. His artistic aptitude became apparent at an early age, and he was sent to London to train at St. Martin's Lane Academy and apprentice with the engraver and printseller John Tinney. Woollett began his career with a series of topographical views, but first truly distinguished himself as skilled engraver with the publication of his print of Richard Wilson's Destruction of the Children of Niobe . His copious plates after artists such as Stubbs, Vernet, and Claude proved so popular, that many of them were copied by engravers on the Continent. Beginning in 1766, he became an active member of the Society of Artists, where he served in a variety of positions. Although he specialized in landscapes, Woollett also engraved a number of marine and historical scenes including the print for which he is most famous, Death of General Wolfe after Benjamin West, and for which he was received the honorable title of Historical Engraver to His Majesty. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography. Engraving, printed on fine laid paper. Very good condition.

Recens Edita totius Novi Belgii, in America Septentrionali siti, delineatio cura et sumtibus Tob. Conr. Lotteri, Sac. Caes. Maj. Geographi August. Vind. Cum Gratia et Privil. S.R.I. Vicariat in part, Rheni, Sveviae, et Juris Franconici

Tobias Conrad Lotter, Augsburg 1760 - An excellent example of the second state of this map to carry Lotter's imprint: an important map of the American northeast with an inset view of New York City This is the fifth state (with the 'Boston' reading) of a map originally issued by Matthaeus Seutter (1678-1757) in 1730, but is also a fine example of one of the much-pirated Jansson-Visscher New England series of maps, first published by Visscher in 1651. The present Seutter/Lotter plate `is the first map in the [Jansson-Visscher] series to show . the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania'. There are three states with Seutter's imprint, and after his death in 1757 his son-in-law, Tobias Conrad Lotter, inserted his own name and three further states were published. This is the second of those three states with the spelling of Boston corrected. To this map of the northeast is added the famous 'Restitutio View' of New York City, which celebrated the brief return to Dutch governance from late 1672 until February of 1674. This is one of the earliest views of the city. Adorning the inset view is a very elaborate tableau in which the Emperor, Charles VI, is shown attended by Hermes, god of commerce, Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Hera, who is standing over a chest of gold coins. Behind the divine beings, dark-skinned workers of the world carry nature's products to lay at the Emperor's feet. The Seutter / Lotter dynasty was one of the most important of all eighteenth-century German map-making firms. The business was established by Lotter's father-in-law who had trained under the renowned cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann in Nuremberg. By 1731 Seutter had been appointed Geographer to the Imperial Court. On his death, Lotter continued in the same post, and with his son Mathais Albrecht Lotter produced cartographical works of a consistently high quality throughout the 18th century. Cf. Augustyn/ Cohen pp.46-47; cf. McCorkle New England 730.5 (1st state, but briefly noting later states); cf. Stokes & Phelps The Iconography of Manhattan Island 1498-1909 I, plate 16b and p.223 (1st state); R.V. Tooley The Mapping of America p.291, #27. Copper engraving, coloured by hand. Fine condition. (13 delen).

- Smith E.15; Fromm 12305; Ziegenfuß I 503.         Veduta dell' Arco di Costantino, e dell Anfiteatro Flavio detto il Colosseo

Rome 1760 - Hind 56 (1st state)John Wilton-Ely plate 152From the important series "Veduta de Roma" View of the Arch of Constantine and the Flavian Amphitheater, called the Coleosseum" (John Wilton-Ely)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: John Wilton-Ely. Giovanni Battista Piranesi: The Complete Etchi

Lettres et Memoires Pour servir a L'histoire Naturelle, Civile et Politique Du Cap Breton, Depuis Son Etablissment Jusqu'a La Reprise De Cette Isle Par Les Anglois En 1758.

Pierre grosse and Jean Nourse, The Hague and London 1760 - 12mo., (6 4/8 x 4 inches). Half-title. Contemporary French mottled calf, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in one, the others decorated with small floral tools (head of the spine chipped with minor loss and lower joint just starting, corners worn with minor loss). First Edition of "One of the few reliable published sources.about the French in Acadia during the 18th century"(DCB). "Pichon came to Canada from France in 1751 as secretary (till 1753) to the governor of Cape Breton (Jean-Louis de Raymond); he served in the vicinity till 1758.(TPL). "Pichon's work, composed in the form of letters written from Louisbourg, beginning in 1752 and ending with the capitulation of that fortress to the English in 1758, constitutes one of the few reliable published sources about the French in Acadia during the 18th century"(DCB). The letters provide a clear and accurate description of Ile Saint-Jean (Prince Edward Island), the trade with New England, the manners and customs of the Micmac and Malecite Indians, the French government in Louisbourg, military events and the causes of the war. One of Pichon's major responsibilities during his brief appointment was preparing the governor's reports to France, a task which allowed him to gather much valuable information he was to use in the writing of this book. Sent to Fort Beausejour (Chignecto), in 1753 he succumbed to the bribes of the commanding officer at Fort Lawrence, Captain George Scott and for more than a year engaged in espionage and subterfuge against the French under the assumed name Tyrell. The information he sold to Scott apparently enabled Col. Robert Monckton to capture the French fort at Chignecto in 1755. After some time spent as a prisoner of war, Pichon retired to England, where he was awarded a pension. Lande 710; Sabin 62610; Staton & Tremaine/TPL 274.
