Les Oeuvres de theatre [12 Volumes, complete]

Libraires Affocies 1760 - Paris, 1760. Nouvelle Edition, revue & corrigee. 12 Volumes, 12mo, contemporary mottled calf, gilt lettered spine-labels (rubbed), some moderate wear, contemporary writing on preliminary pages of a volume and a few chips to leather but still in very good condition. A very scarce early complete set of Florent Carton Dancourt's dramatic works. The plays of Dancourt are faithful descriptions of the manners of the time, and as such have real historical value. The characters are drawn with a realistic touch that led to his being styled by Charles Palissot the Teniers of comedy. He is very successful in his delineation of low life, and especially of the peasantry. The dialogue is sparkling, witty and natural. Many of the incidents of his plots were derived from actual occurrences in the fast and scandalous life of the period, and several of his characters were drawn from well-known personages of the day. Most of the plays incline to the type of farce rather than of pure comedy. Voltaire defined his talent in the words: "What Regnard was in respect to Moliere in the high comedy, Dancourt was in the farce." (French: "Ce que Regnard était à l'égard de Molière dans la haute comédie, le comédien Dancourt l'était dans la farce.") OCLC 559462827, locating two copies which are both held by the British National Libraries. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Paris: H.L. Guerin & L.F. Delatour, 1760. First edition and an attractive copy, complete with the two Additions. Duhamel (1700-82), French polymath, made notable contributions in agronomy, chemistry, botany, and naval technology. His major interest and contribution to technology and society was in agriculture. Duhamel "adapted Tull’s system to France based on his own wide reading in French agronomy and on original experiments."–D.S.B., IV, p. 224. One of Duhamel’s main interests was the cultivation and use of timber; this is one of his chief books on the subject. "The sections of the book discuss the soil, the climate, and the choice of trees; their propagation; nursery gardens; planting; forests; and maintenance and re-afforestation, with all instructions based firmly on the author’s long experience of forestry."–Raphael, An Oak Spring Sylva, 34. The attractive plates depict methods of grafting, agricultural implements, etc. Fine copy. 19th-century bookplate of F. Allard. ? Stafleu & Cowan 1545. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Interest of Great Britain considered, with Regard to her Colonies, and the Acquisitions of Canada and Guadeloupe. To which are added, Observations concerning the Increase of Mankind, Peopling those Countries, &c.

London: printed for T. Becket, 1760 - 7 pamphlets bound in one volume, octavo (190 × 128 mm). Franklin: pp. [2], 58, including the additional leaf at the end. Late 19th-century half calf, marbled boards, red morocco label, narrow bands, gilt lozenges to compartments, marbled endpapers. A little rubbed, contents variably soiled and browned; half-title and title of item (b) torn, no loss of text, half-title laid down, last leaf of the same torn across and with an old sewn repair backed with paper; final leaf of Franklin slightly crumpled and torn at the inner margin, loss of a few characters but overall very good. Full-page table to item (e). First edition of Franklin's "Canada Pamphlet", an important contribution to the debate on the relative merits of the retention of Canada or sugar-rich Guadeloupe following the impending victory in the Seven Years' War. Although contemporary opinion credited Franklin – this copy is annotated "by Mr. Frankland [sic] of America" on the title page – 19th-century scholarship attributed the pamphlet to Richard Jackson. However, the publication of The Papers of Benjamin Franklin returned "The Canada Pamphlet" to the canon: "in recent years Franklin's authorship has been re-established in the minds of all but a few doubters, though, as Franklin himself seems to have acknowledged, he received some help from his friend and ally Jackson. With this attribution to Franklin the present editors wholly concur" (Papers 9:53). As well as arguing strongly for the retention of Canada, in this, "one of his most important publications in pamphlet form", Franklin also discusses the potential problems of government that might attend the expansion of the colonies, but doubts their ability to act in concert. Further growth "may render them dangerous. Of this I own, I have not the least conception, when I consider that we have already fourteen separate governments Those we now have, are not only under different governors, but have different forms of government, different laws, different interests, and some of them different religious persuasions and different manners. Their jealousy of each other is so great that however necessary an union of the colonies has long been, for their common defence and security against their enemies, they have never been able to effect such an union among themselves Nothing but the immediate command of the crown has been able to produce even the imperfect union but lately seen there". From the library of the 5th Earl of Rosebery, Liberal prime minister and bibliophile, whose collecting was marked by a sensitivity to provenance, the present volume with the armorial bookplate of the antiquary and collector James Maidment reimposed verso of the front free endpaper. A prominent figure in Scottish literary circles, Maidment was a friend of Sir Walter Scott, and himself an author: "his publications mainly of editions of Scottish historical, literary, genealogical, and antiquarian material were very numerous. Many were anonymous, and most were privately printed in small editions, some at least for their bawdy or erotic content" (ODNB). The sale of his extensive library in over 5,000 lots occupied 15 sessions in April and May 1880, raising about £4,500. The other six items in this pamphlet volume relate to Britain's involvement in mid-18th century conflicts worldwide, including a number of uncommon and important pieces, all printed in London: a. A Letter to the Most Noble Thomas, Duke of Newcastle, on certain Points of the last Importance to these Nations H. Whitridge, 1746; pp. [2], 38. First edition; an analysis of the causes of the second Jacobite rebellion; b. EGMONT, John Perceval, Earl of. An Examination of the Principles, and an Enquiry into the Conduct of the Two B*****rs The Fifth Edition, reviewed and corrected. A. Price, 1749; pp. [4], 79, half-title bound in. Criticism of the prime minister Henry Pelham and his brother the Duke of Newcastle for their conduct of the Austrian War of Succession; c. CHESTERFIELD, P

(2), XXX, 364; XII, 360. A wonderful set in exemplary condition, extremely fresh and clean, the paper unpressed and the impression is bold, dark and fine. A RARE, IMPORTANT AND VERY BEAUTIFUL EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC OF ITALIAN LITERATURE. The edition has long been considered one of the richest and most magnificent of the many editions of Tasso printed over the centuries. Poet, prose writer and literary theorist, Tasso was successor to and deviator from the tradition of Boiardo and Ariosto, he gave to the court of Ferrara the third of the great ottava rima epic romances celebrating the Este ancestry, Gerusalemme Liberata, and the purest example of Renaissance pastoral drama, Aminta. Even before its end, his life became a legend of poetic madness and wandering. Born in Sorrento, he shared the political exile of his father, Bernardo, and began his literary studies and his long experience of Italian courts in Urbino. He attended the universities of Padua and of Bologna, at 18 published Rinaldo, a chivalric poem in 12 cantos, and in 1565 took service with Cardinal Luigi d'Este. Although he completed the Liberata in 1575, Tasso was never to be satisfied with it in relation to neo-Aristotelian canons of epic poetry or to Counter-Reformation religious orthodoxy, and restlessly he consulted scholars on one score and ecclesiastical inquisitors on the other. In 1577 he was imprisoned for a paranoid display of violence in the presence of Lucrezia d'Este. He escaped to the south but, following another outburst on his return to Ferrara in 1579, was shut up in the hospital of S. Anna, to remain there until 1586. The Liberata was finally published in 1581, but Tasso continued to regard the poem as unfinished while it circulated in several editions from that year on. Released from S. Anna, he went to Mantua under the protection of Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga, and thence into a ceaseless vagabondage that took him to Genoa, Rome, Naples and Florence. He received hospitality from religious orders and academies, from the Medici, from the marquis Giambattista Manso, and from Pope Clement VIII and his nephew, to whom Tasso dedicated the only authorized version of his epic, much reworked and retitled.         Veduta interna della Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli detta della Certosa, che anticamente era la principal sala delle Terme di Diocleziano.

. Interior of the Church of Our Lady of the Angels called the Charterhouse, which was once the principal room of the Baths of Diocletian. Copperprint. Rome 1760. 50x81 cm. (Vidute de Roma). Printed on strong paper. * When Piranesi arrived in Rome in the year 1740 he was instantly impressed by the splendour of the antique ruins in the ancient city. For almost a year he was an apprentice in the studio of Guiseppe Vasi, his later colleague and rival, where he learned the art of engraving copper plates. He began his extremely successful career depicting Rome's architectural gems (antique and contemporary) on extra large-scale single sheets: the famous "Vedute di Roma" (Views of Rome). Piranesi was an obsessed artist. Relentlessly he added plates, sometimes variations of former ones, to the collection, until, at the end of his life, there was a total of 135 views showing the majesty and the splendour of the once powerful capital of the Roman empire.         Collecao das Leys que forao mandadas para o Est da India, ou que sendo estabalecidas nelle teverao confirmacao Regia.

Probably Lisbon, c. 1760.. Portuguese manuscript on paper. 240 written pages. Contemporary full calf; giltstamped title "India Colleccao De Leys e Ordens Antigas" to spine, florally gilt. Folio (235 x 358 mm).. Unique manuscript containing 113 numbered and indexed Royal decrees, dating from 1642 to 1757, with additional material bound at the end of the volume: nine items of correspondence with the Conselho Ultramarino dating from 1681 to 1735, separately indexed as "Rellacao das Rezolucoens, Cartas Regias, e mais Ordens, que ha na Secretaria do Concelho Ultramarino, Sobre as Alvidracoens do Estado da India". Many of the documents are transcribed from the Secretario do Conselho Ultramarino, others constitute missives by various viceroys and governors of India. The information ranges from trade agreements and navigation routes through Arabian waters to India to customs regulations and trade with East Africa, negotiations with the British in Bombay, and the issue of piracy. Other documents pertain to missionary activity and the "various gentile peoples living in Goa". - Portuguese expansion into the Indian Ocean began in the early 16th century following Vasco da Gama's explorations and led to numerous armed conflicts with the Ottoman Empire along the coast of the Arabian Gulf. Here, the Portuguese asserted their suzerainity for more than two centuries: in 1750, Nasir bin Murshid al-Yaribi, Imam of Oman, ousted the Portuguese from Muscat, which Afonso de Albuquerque had conquered in 1507. - Written by various hands, but assembled and indexed by the Royal secretary Joaquim Miguel Lopes de Laire, whose name is signed under the index and most of the supplementary documents. A first-hand window into the legal, commercial, and military aspects of Portuguese rule in their Middle Eastern colonies. - Upper spine-end professionally repaired; an appealingly bound volume. From the collection of D. Manuel de Sousa e Holstein Beck, conde da Povoa (1932-2011); monogram stamp of the Dukes of Palmela to first page.

A View General of the City de Havana of Amerique. Vue Generalle de la Ville de Havanne en Amerique.

1760 - Paris, Daumont, c.1760. Original colour. 209 x 370mm. A faint stain in title area. A 'vue d'optique' of Havana, designed to be looked at through a zograscope, with the title in reverse above the view. The naive style of colouring is standard for these prints, but the English version of the title is unusually inept. In the foreground are a number of ships, including a galleon firing its cannon. The chain boom can be seen across the entrance of the harbour.

Les Hindous.Paris, chez l'auteur & H. Nicolle, 1808-1812. 4 volumes. 1mo (ca. 56 x 41 cm). Title-pages of each volume with hand-coloured etched vignette, and 288 etched plates (36 double-page) printed in colour and finished by hand. Contemporary red half morocco, gold-tooled spine, shell-marbled sides.

Abbey, Travel 430; Colas 2767 ("ce livre est rare et il n'existe que très peu d'exemplaires complets"); cf. Hardgrave, "A portrait of Black Town", in: Changing Visions, Lasting Images, pp. 31-46. Rare first edition of Solvyns's Les Hindous, a rich and compelling ethnographic portrait of India, with accompanying text in French and English. Francois Baltazard Solyns (1760-1824) resided in Calcutta from 1791 to 1804. In 1794 he began work on a series of plates portraying the Hindus of Calcutta. This series was published in 1799 as A collection of two hundred and fifty coloured etchings, but, lacking the appeal of the picturesque, it proved a financial failure. In 1804 he left India for France, redrew the plates and published them in the present striking volumes. In very good condition, with some foxing, tear in lower right corner of the first title-page, bindings show some wear, spines damaged. Extraordinary visual record of life in India at the end of the 18th century.

Includes fold-out map engraved by T. Kitchin, entitled A New Map of the British Dominions in North America; with the Limits of the Governments annexed thereto by the late Treaty of Peace, and settled by Proclamation, October 7th 1763. Sabin 20726: "This work was originally printed in numbers, as by W. D., M.D., the first of which appeared in 1747. The first volume was finished in 1749, the second in 1751. The death of the author, in October, 1752, prevented the completion of the work." Evans 6992, 7885. Wright Howes, while acknowledging its significance, did not think much of it in terms of historical accuracy: Howes D436: "First American history of the whole country... A vast reservoir of untrustworthy information." American National Biography, however, sees it differently: "His grand history, A Summary, Historical and Political, of the... British Settlements in North America, was first issued in serial form in 1747, then published in two volumes in 1749 and 1752. Opinionated and encyclopedic, it was an impressive achievement with an informative, if digressive, account of colonial life. Incomplete at his death, the Summary is an important source book, and it enjoyed a wide circulation among American and European intellectuals. Adam Smith used it in his research for The Wealth of Nations and had praise for the ''honest and downright Dr. Douglass.''" (Peter R. Virgadamo). The reference to digression may be a result of Douglass's tangent relating to the treatment of smallpox in this work: "Douglass sought to advance colonial medicine and to reform it along the lines of European institutions. He imported medical books, introduced new medicines, instructed local physicians, and began research on epidemic diseases such as smallpox. When smallpox broke out in 1721, he used Thomas Sydenham's ''cold regimen'' but to little avail as the worst epidemic in Boston's annals swept through the town... After the epidemic Douglass focused his medical research exclusively on smallpox, determined to reduce the mortality rate of the disease in Boston. Before he could complete his work on a new method of treatment, another epidemic occurred in 1730. This time Douglass approved the use of inoculation but insisted upon strict medical controls. In 1730 he also published the preliminary results of his research, A Practical Essay concerning the Small Pox. A concise scientific treatise, this was the first colonial publication to utilize large-scale statistics for medical purposes." (ibid) From the title pages: Vol. I.: Containing I. Some general Account of ancient and modern Colonies, the granting and settling of the British Continent and West-India Island Colonies, with some transient Remarks concerning the adjoining French and Spanish Settlements, and other Remarks of various Natures. II. The Hudson's-Bay Company's Lodges, Fur and Skin Trade. III. Newfoundland Harbours and Cod-Fishery. IV. The Province of L'Acadie or Nova Scotia; with the Vicissitudes of the Property and Jurisdiction thereof, and its present State. V. The several Grants of Sagdahock, Province of Main, Massachusetts-Bay, and New-Plymouth, united by a new Charter in the present Province of Massachusetts-Bay, commonly called New-England.; Vol. II.: I. The History of the Provinces and Colonies of New-Hampshire, Rhode-Island, Connecticut, New-York, New-Jerseys, Pensylvania, Maryland, and Virginia; their several original Settlements and gradual Improvements; their Boundaries, Produce and Manufactures, Trade and Navigation, Laws and Government. II. Their Natural History, Religious Sectaries, Paper Currencies, and other Miscellanies. III. Several Medical Digressions, with a curious Dissertation on the Treatment of the Small-Pox, and Inoculation.

        Giphantie

Babylone (Paris): n.p., 1760. Octavo, with four engraved plates by Cochin after Desfriches illustrating the second work "Mon Odyssée ou le Journal de Mon Retour de Saintonge"; contemporary mottled calf, slightly worn, spine gilt with red label. First edition: a marvellous utopian community in Africa, prefiguring the uses of photography, television and the telephone. Tiphaigne de la Roche (1729-1774) a physician and polymath, wrote a series of works invested with the Enlightenment spirit of philosophical enthusiasm. In Giphantie (an anagram of the author's name) the protagonist is lifted semi-conscious and transported by air to an edenic garden, where a charming spirit guide shows him around their 'vaguely utopian society' (Lewis). Interestingly, the continuing importance of the book is largely due to the succession of technical devices which are taken for granted on the island, including prototype televisions and telephones. The work is particularly remembered for one intriguing passage which has been taken as an important foundation moment in the proto-history of photography. Thus, the English edition of 1761: 'You know that the rays of light, reflected from different bodies, form a picture, and paint the image reflected on all polished surfaces, for instance, on the retina of the eye, on water, and on glass. The elementary spirits have sought to fix these fleeting images…'. This work is bound together with Pierre Honoré Robbe de Beauveset's rococo poem in four verses Mon Odyssée ou le Journal de Mon Retour de Saintonge (La Haye, 1760), illustrated with four engraved plates. De Beauveset was an influential French writer known for his gentle satires and erotic works.
