Du Culte Des Dieux Fetiches, Ou Parallele De L'ancienne Religion De L'egypte Avec La Religion Actuelle De Nigritie

Anon 1760 - 1st ed. Full contemporary mottled calf. 5 raised bands. Solid binding. Negligible split along bottom-most edges spine. All edges red. Marbled end pages. Generally clean, unmarked pages. Perforated stamp on title page. 285 pages. 17 cm. French Enlightenment Philosophy. An important work in sociology, anthropology and comparative religion. In this work de Brosses introduced the concept of fetishism in religious practice worshiping animals and objects. "De Brosses was a pioneer of the science of comparative religion. In his memoir Du culte des dieux fétiches., reprinted in the Encyclopédie [Encyclopedie methodique], he combated the then prevailing tendency to interpret ancient mythologies and religious systems, notably that of Egypt, as profound symbolism and upheld the thesis that ancient Egyptian religion did not differ substantially from the primitive cults of native Africa. The work, which the French Academy refused to print in its transactions and which gave rise to violent attacks, anticipates the modern anthropological method of approach to the history of religions." (Robert Briffault, Encyclopedia of Social Sciences) Brunet I 1277. A side note: Karl Marx read de Brosses work in German. De Brosses's work had significant impact on Marx's intellectual consideration of religion. See Roland Boer's Marxism and Religion: A Complete and Annotated Bibliography for additional references.         Studi di Pittura

1760. PIAZZETTA, Giambattista. Studi di Pittura già dissegnati da Giambatista Piazzetta ed ora con l'intaglio di Marco Pitteri. [6], 11, [3] ff. With an additional engraved title from the French edition of 1764. Illustrated with an engraved title-page vignette, head- and tailpieces, one of the latter with an etched self-portrait of Piazzetta dated 1738, plus 48 engraved plates in pairs numbered I-XXIV after drawings by Piazzetta. Oblong folio, 308 x 425 mm, contemporary Italian quarter calf over speckled paper boards. Venice: Giambattista Albrizzi, 1760. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of Piazzetta's drawing manual, one of the finest Venetian illustrated books of the Settecento, which contains the only surviving etching by the master himself, a self-portrait executed in 1738, and numerous engravings based on Piazzetta's drawings. The Studi di pittura was conceived by Piazzetta's friend and publisher, Giambattista Albrizzi, as an instructional manual for aspiring artists. The Piazzetta drawings were executed specifically for this book and were intended to illustrate the artistic theories espoused by the emerging Venetian Academy, as of 1750 under the direction of Piazzetta himself. Piazzetta produced twenty-four drawings for the Studi di pittura at Albrizzi's request shortly before the painter's death, in 1754. Albrizzi in turn commissioned two of Italy's finest engravers, Francesco Bartolozzi and Marco Pitteri, to reproduce Piazzetta's twenty-four drawings in a distinctive, prescribed engraving style; a total of forty-eight sheets resulted, i.e., two prints for each of Piazzetta's studies. The two complementary sets of engravings were interleaved in the finished Studi di pittura, affording the student two contrasting interpretations of Piazzetta's drawings. Bartolozzi's spare and linear prints are intended to highlight the character of Piazzetta's mastery of outline drawing; Pitteri's interpretations, on the other hand, reproduce the dramatic chiaroscuro effects intending to show Piazzetta's skill in delineating three dimensional form. The subject matter covers a range of themes addressed by eighteenth-century academies of art, where students trained first by copying plaster casts and then later drawing nudes from life. A series of multiple studies illustrate hands, feet, ears and the like seen from five or six points of view on each sheet. Larger views of male and female torsos and reclining nudes follow, along with images of saints, infants, and costumes, all themes a Venetian student of painting was expected to master. Piazzetta's love of the human form is evident and ubiquitous in all of these delicate engravings. Accompanying the Piazzetta illustrations are fifteen chapters of text considering the principles of artistic practice. Albrizzi borrowed chapters from the Bolognese academician Gian-Pietro Cavazzoni Zannotti's Alcuni avvertimenti per lo incamminamento di un giovane alla pittura. Zannotti's text advises aspiring artists how to select a teacher (maestro) and then addresses the formal properties of works of art, i.e., colour, symmetry, anatomy, perspective, gesture, and costume. Students are encouraged to examine the practice and opinions of important masters like Vasari, Leonardo, Raphael, Carracci, and Bassano and are advised to copy directly from their works. The advice offered by the Studi di pittura was apparently taken quite seriously, for the volume is said to have had "grande importanza per i giovani allievi dell'Accademia" (Precerutti-Garberi). "The Studi di pittura also contains a short but reliable biography of Piazzetta by Albrizzi himself. Embedded in the decorative tailpiece of the Studi is a small etching dated 1738 and apparently the only one that Piazzetta ever made that may be a self-portrait in Rembrandt's manner" (Alice Binion). A few instances of pale spotting, extremities of paperboards with repairs; overall in fine original condition. PROVENANCE: Arthur and Charlotte Vershbow, with their ex-libris. George Knox, Piazzetta (Washington, 1983), 21, 210-15. Precerutti-Garberi, Giambattista Piazzetta e l'Accademia (Milan, 1971).         L'Art de Peindre

1760. WATELET, Claude-Henri. L'Art de Peindre. xxii, 152 pp. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, title-page vignette, 13 etched headpiece portrait medallions all by J.B.M. Pierre and engraved by Watelet, 10 elegant tailpieces- 4 by Marguerite Lecomte and 5 by Pierre all etched by Watelet, and two full-page line engravings of Antinoüs and Venus de Medicis by Pierre and etched by Watelet. 12mo., 158 x 89 mm, elegantly bound in near-contemporary English vertical straight-grained morocco, Greek key border ornaments, a.e.g. Paris: Guerin et Delatour, 1760. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition, the octavo edition, issued simultaneously in a quarto format. An elegant French treatise on the art of painting illustrated with a total of 27 images either etched or engraved by the author Claude-Henri Watelet. The portraits include: Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, Titian, Coreggio, Tintoretto, etc. The French painter Watelet (1718-1786) was a member of the famously wealthy Fermiers Généraux, which allowed him to pursue his interests as an amateur painter, a respected etcher, a writer on the arts and a connoisseur of gardens. As a close friend of Francois Boucher, Hubert Robert and Madame de Pompadour, Watelet was well-positioned to write with some insight on the prevalent theories of painting and art during the Ancien Regime. Watelet's book was divided into two parts: the first a long prose poem on the art of painting, containing sections on design, colour, picturesque painting, and poetic invention. The second part offers contemporary reflections of proportions, painting of the human figure, the movement of figures, aspects of beauty, the harmony of light and colours, the expression of the passions, etc.. He was a contributor to the Diderot Encyclopédie on painting and engraving; he an honorary associate of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, and in 1760 he was elected to the Académie française after the publication of his L'Art de peindre. Watelet was also an early patron of Greuze. who painted the famous portrait of Watelet dressed in silver-coloured silk, with an artist's calipers in hand facing a bronze reduction of the Venus de' Medici on his table (see plate #2 page 72 of this volume). PROVENANCE: J. Taylor with his name gilt-stamped on front cover (perhaps John Taylor (1745-1806), English landscape painter, close friend of David Garrick and referred to by Benjamin Franklin as "the best landscape painter in England"; Lucien Tissot Dupont with red leather ex-libris; Peter Wick with ex-libris; Edmond Lincoln.         Poésies de M. Haller

New edition retouched and enhanced. Full blond calf granita time. Back smooth decorated with flower boxes and golden jewels, coins title and volume numbers garnet and tan morocco. Cuts outlined a golden net. All marbled. Bookplate exceptional pen, library Joseph-Ignace Guillotin guards on each volume. Dr. Joseph Ignace Guillotin is an heir of the Enlightenment, a member of the famous Masonic Lodge of the Nine Sisters. He makes friends with Benjamin Franklin, Lavoisier, Bailly, Buffon or Lacepede, and writers and artists such as Condorcet, Voltaire, Restif de la Bretonne and Moreau Le Jeune. In his dressing Guillotin also met his future father-Antoine-Claude Saugrain, printer and bookseller soon appointed chief librarian of the Arsenal by the Comte d'Artois. Great scholar, Guillotin is also a major player in the French Revolution from its outset. Initiator in 1788 of the Petition of six bodies, claiming the vote by poll and not least the States-General, it is also the one who led the members in the room of the Tennis Court. In April 1789, he wrote with Bailly Booklet grievances of the Third Estate of Paris which established the first version of Human Homme.La Criminal Law Reform shall submit it to the Assembly the same philanthropic concern for equality with men before the law: A single sentence regardless of the rank of the criminal; lack of consequences for his family; non-forfeiture of the convicted; and especially one type of execution "by the effect of a simple mechanism. ".The Guillotine, inspired by vintage prints and improved by Dr. Antoine Louis machinery, is an instrument that is supposed to have killed painlessly and replace execution of the former regime's main modes: decapitation by ax saber or sword, hanging and roue.Or if book of poetry Haller is a precious relic of the library near the great scientists and artists of the time humanist, it also allows us to suppose Guillotin knowledge on medical issues raised by his invention.En Indeed, Albrecht von Haller is not only a poet. It is also an anatomist and physiologist renowned, best known for his research on irritability, highlighting the persistence of movements in parts of the body. "Haller wondered how the life of an animal is still possible after removal of the brain and reported number of observations relating to insects, cold-blooded quadrupeds (...) that remain for a few days able to walk and even to mate" (see Canguilhem, Formation of the concept of reflex the eighteenth and eighteenth centuries) .OR this reflection is crucial in the process of Guillotin, since mechanization is primarily intended to end the suffering caused by the executions. If from 1752, Dr. Antoine Louis participated in the dispute over the "signs of death" we have no record of interest in the issue Guillotin. The presence of a work of Haller in Guillotin allows us to assume that the doctor philanthropist was fully aware of the scientific debate on the basic question of the immediacy of death due to the removal of the head. So knowingly uttered as Guillotin before the Assembly this sentence (the unfortunate statement earned him a bad reputation), "With my machine, I'll blow your head with a wink, and you do not suffer. Mechanical falls like lightning, head flies, blood gushes, man is no more.

OGGILBY'S ACTUAL SURVEY OF ALL DIRECT & PRINCIPAL CROSS ROADS IN ENGLAND AND WALES: WHEREIN ARE EXACTLY DELINEATED & ENGRAVEN ALL YE CITIES, TOWNS, VILLAGES, CHURCHES, SEAT &c SCITUATE ON OR NEAR ROADS WITH THEIR RESPECTIVE DISTANCES IN MEASURED AND COMPUTED MILESSize: 8vo - over 7? - 9?" tall, 273pp, plus 1p "Catalogue of some Prints & Maps, Printed & sold by Thos. Bowles at his shop next by Chapter House in St. Pauls Ch-Yard London". The prelims and pages 1-4 inclusive are, sadly, lacking, making it difficult to definitely identify which this is of the several editions published between 1720 and 1764, although it does include the County maps. The maps have not been coloured, the pages appear to be untrimmed, and minor chipping of the edges of a few pages has been professionally repaired. The spine and covers appear to be an early rebinding, with the original (?) tooled leather covers laid on. The end papers are quite new. Overall, a nice collectible copy.         L' Afrique Divisee En Ses Principaux Etats...

Double page engraved map (29" x 21"), hand colored in outline, decorative cartouche. Some chips and tears in margins, but margins are wide, a little creasing around the centerfold, minor aging; otherwise about very good, bright and with a strong impression. Janvier was a French geographer that was active in the second half of the 18th century. According to Norwich and Tooley, Janvier produced a series of maps in 1760, and collaborated in an Atlas Moderne in 1762 and 1771.The present map is number 28 from that atlas. This rather handsome engraved map, which has full color, appears to present the cartographic knowledge of Africa in the mid 18th century. The present map was originally published in 1762, in a slightly smaller version. However, this edition appears to have has greater detail, and this is especially true in the interior and southern portion of the continent. There is a decorative cartouche in the upper left corner that features a lion coming out of the jungle. Norwich 104. Tooley p. 59.

An Introduction to the True Astronomy: or, Astronomical Lectures, Read in the Astronomical School of the University of Oxford

London: J. Buckland and others, 1760. Octavo, with 25 folding plates in series and two finely engraved folding lunar charts, very good in worn contemporary calf, spine label chipped, front hinge becoming tender. From the library of John Harrison. A wonderful survival: an important eighteenth-century handbook of astronomy from the library of the great watchmaker John Harrison, inventor of the marine chronometer that revolutionised the study of longitude and which was prized by Captain Cook and his compatriots. The book bears Harrison's armorial bookplate and ownership inscription 'E Libris Jn. Harrison July 23d 1766' above the initials 'JH' to the title-page in Harrison's distinctive hand.Astronomer and mathematician John Keill (1671-1721) was one of the new generation of scientists who flourished alongside Sir Isaac Newton at Oxford University. This treatise on astronomy was first published in 1721 and enjoyed no less than seven editions through the eighteenth-century as new discoveries and theories came to light. It provided a summary of contemporary knowledge for students, scientists and all those whose work was affected by discoveries in astronomy. As a result, the presence of this scholarly work of astronomy in Harrison's library confirms that he had made a study of the theoretical aspects of the study of longitude, important because it would have helped him in his thorny dealings with the Commissioners of the Board of Longitude, many of whom were astronomers themselves. An Introduction to the True Astronomy contains three separate discussions of longitude showing widely accepted approaches to the problem. The first entry relates to the abandonment of the ancient rough reckoning of longitude from the most westerly known meridian and its replacement with the Greenwich prime meridian. The second entry describes the true method of finding longitude from eclipses of the sun and moon and is accompanied by a folding plate with five detailed figures. The last entry examines the use of eclipses on Jupiter's moons, a conceptually pleasing yet technically difficult method. Interestingly, the longitude of planets and stars themselves is also earnestly considered.

Ynddiddan Rhwng Wr Dall Ar ANGEU Neu Rybydd I Bawb Ynghyd Annogaeth I Ymbaratoi

Shrewsbury?: Thomas Durston?, 1760 Ynddiddan Rhwng Wr Dall Ar ANGEU Neu Rybydd I Bawb Ynghyd Annogaeth I Ymbaratoi Erbyn Awr Angeu. Gwrandewch Addyfc a Byddwch Ddoethion, Nag Ymwrthodwch a Hi. Dihar 8. 30.. Shrewsbury?, Thomas Durston? c 1760?, 10*16.5cm, 16 pp, large woodcut of death discoursing with a man on title page, some outer margins shaved, affecting a few letters. A rare 18th century Welsh Ballad, a dialogue between death and an old man in 98 stanzas, beginning: Yr heneint mwyn Penllwydion, gwyr Ifenge teg ei gram, A ddeweh yn nes ei wrando, yn fawrion ag yn fan .. The subtitle roughly translates as a warning for all with help for preperation for the hour of death. The woodcut on the title page shows a skeletal figure of Death with an arrow discoursing with an old man. The title-page of another 18th C edition of this ballad, printed by Thomas Durston at Shrewsbury, with the same woodcut of death and the old man, is reproduced as image 51 in Philip Henry Jones (ed), A Nation and its books, a history of the books in Wales (Aberystwyth, 1998). The accompanying caption reads An eighteenth-century Shrewsbury printed ballad, Ymddiddan rhwng Hen wr Dall ar Angeu. For once, the illustration related to the text: Death holds forth to the blind old man. First published in Cynghorian Tad i'w Fab (London, 1683). This ballad retained its popularity well into the nineteenth century. Due to the same woodcut being used it would seem likely that this edition was also printed in Shrewsbury. Not in Rees. Davies, A bibliography of Welsh Ballads (London 1911) records another edition printed by Thomas Durston (no 5). This edition not in ESTC. The volume also includes 'Samson Agonistes' and 'Poems upon several Occasions'. The book is bound in the original full-calf and the boards are really nice. The book has been rebacked by a professional binder. The spine is in very high quality leather and it is lettered in bright 22k gold. It has raised bands and six compartments.
