[Madrid. 1760].. [5]pp. plus integral blank leaf inscribed. Folio. Dbd. Maltese cross at head of title. Contemporary manuscript inscription and later pencil inscription at top of first page. Accomplished in manuscript at Buen Retiro, Spain on December 28, 1770, signed by Juan Manuel Crespo with additional annotation on last page of printed text and additional inscription on verso of last page of text. Integral blank leaf with manuscript note related to the cedula on recto and verso. A very good copy. A rare detailed royal cedula issued by Charles III, King of Spain, ordering a general pardon of accused individuals to be enacted throughout the Spanish Indies. Citing earlier royal proclamations issued previously by Charles III concerning clemency for prisoners, this cedula reprints texts of decrees from January and February 1760. While most prisoners were to receive pardons, a long list of exceptions, based on the January 28 cedula, is provided. These included those accused of secular and religious treason, killing a priest, counterfeiting money, arson, blasphemy, sodomy, robbery, falsehoods, and duelling. Numerous other details regarding the earlier clemencies are also provided. The present royal amnesty was to be distributed to the Viceroys, Presidents, Audiencias, Governors, and other judges throughout the Indies in order that this resolution by properly executed. This copy, accomplished in manuscript at Buen Retiro on December 28, 1770, is signed by Juan Manuel Crespo with the additional annotation, "Yo El Rey. Por mandado del Rey Nuestro Señor." A manuscript inscription on the blank verso of the final printed page, dated February 27, 1762, confirms that the decree had been reviewed two days earlier by the President and other high officials in Santiago de Chile. A manuscript note in a separate hand on the recto and verso of the integral blank leaf provides additional information about the receipt of the document in Santiago in 1762. A rare and highly informative proclamation regarding royal pardons to be enacted throughout the Spanish New World and in Spain. Not in OCLC, Medina (BHA), or Palau.

He spent two years as private secretary to the Count of Seckan, and then was appointed as physician of the mines in Idrija, a small village in Slovenia, remaining there for sixteen years. In 1761 he published "De Hydroargyro Idriensi Tentamina" on the symptoms of mercury poisoning among miners. Scopoli spent time studying the local natural history, publishing "Flora Carniolica" (1760) as well as a major work on entomology. He also published "Anni Historico-Naturales" (1769-72), which included descriptions of new birds from various collections. In 1769 Scopoli was appointed a senior lecturer at Mining Academy at Chemnitz, and in 1777 transferred to the University of Pavia. His last work was "Deliciae Flora et Fauna Insubricae" (1786-88), which included scientific names for birds and mammals described by Pierre Sonnerat in the accounts of his voyages.         Geöfnete Schreib-Schule, oder, Deutsche, lateinische, und franzosische Vorschriften

Frankfurt: Selbstverlag, 1760. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong 4to. [25 x 19.5 cm]. (1) ff. engraved title-page with putti and calligraphy instruments, (3) ff., 54 engraved plates, (1) p. 'Nachricht.' Bound in early half-vellum with patterned paper over boards; faint damp mark to upper left corner of some leaves. Generally fresh. An unusually fresh example of the rare first edition of a Baroque German penmanship textbook self-published by this "Schul-, Schreib- und Rechnenmeister" from Frankfurt am Main, with 54 engraved plates. After assuring his readers that these methods have been honed throughout his tenure as a teacher of penmanship, Schirmer begins with simple morphological exercises-single ligatures and glyphs-that soon evolve into the writing of whole words, sentences, and finally paragraphs, a process that is repeated for each script: Kurrent, Kanzlei (chancellery), Fraktur, and Lateinische Cursiv (with a page on Rotunda and Quadrata). While this accretative method is not uncommon, Schirmer's use of dotted or unbroken lines to mark the angle, length, and space between typographical features is more unusual-as is a plate comprised exclusively of tails, loops and figure-eights, to be practiced as if they were capital letters. More visually striking are the 25 plates that follow, among which are a number of features rarely seen in contemporary Schreibmeisterbucher: entire plates devoted to a single word, exercises in trompe l'oeil, and the juxtaposition of detailed figurative engravings with their more decorative counterparts. In these plates, Schirmer first provides a broad selection of edifying quotes in each script, often with elaborately decorated headlines. The ornamentation reaches a pitch in two plates of single words-Wir and Ich-whose capitals blossom into elegant intertwining mazes of leaves, scrolls, and fasces. The volume also contains a plate in which the crosshatched and shaded figures of a horse, swan, soldier, etc., are mirrored in the looping command-of-hand drawings popularized by the 17th-century Italian masters. Yet Schirmer's last exercises, such as the trompe-l'oeil calling-cards, sample receipts and formal business letters, seem to suggest a uniquely German sense of calligraphy, not as fanciful (i.e. Italian) doodling, but as an artistic discipline of purpose and profit. OCLC: Library of Congress, Winterthur, Newberry, Metropolitan Museum. * Bonacini 1634, Doede 176; S.K.B. 4917. Not in Hofer (or Osley). New editions of the work appeared in 1772 and 1773; this is the earliest edition we have been able to locate.

Theorie de l'Impot. [Bound with:] [PESSELIER, Charles.] Doutes proposés à l'Auteur de la Théorie de l'Impôt.

No place: No printer, 1760-61 - 2 works bound together in 1 volume, quarto (255 x 193 mm). Contemporary French mottled calf, spine decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco label, marbled endpapers. Housed in a brown morocco backed bookform folding case. Engraved armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Lower edge a little rubbed, with corners worn, very occasional spotting. Excellent copies. First edition of each work. The Théorie de l'Impôt is a spirited and able attack upon the financial administration of France, and especially upon the "fermiers généraux", whom Mirabeau regarded as parasites preying upon the vitals of the nation. The work highlights the problems and injustices of the French system of taxation, and added fuel to the fire of the coming revolution. The king disapproved of the work; Mirabeau was imprisoned on 16 December 1760, but through the efforts of Madame de Pompadour and others, was released on Christmas Eve, under orders to leave Paris for his estate at Bignon. The work proposes a reorganization of financial administrative machinery, the abolition of the "Fermes", a reduction in the taxation upon salt, with the object of increasing the total yield, and a special tax upon tobacco farms. The domaine, the post, and the mint were to be further sources of revenue. The author ranks as one of the earliest important writers on taxation. Higgs notes that the book is "of real importance in the history of financial theory" (The Physiocrats, p. 57). Pesselier was one of the most forceful critics of the physiocrats, and he here attacks Mirabeau's Théorie de l'impôt, published the previous year. The present work is notable, however, for its terse affirmation of the characteristically physiocratic doctrine that agriculture holds a privileged place in the economic system; of the products of the soil Pesselier writes, "Elles procurent un profit net et durable puisqu'elles sont à l'abri de l'imitation". Besitzvermerk "ex libirs Jos. Barth".*; feines Epxl.. FIRST EDITION, complete with both parts. The eight plates, the largest anatomical drawings in a book by Peter (Petrus) Camper (1722-1789), depict almost life-size the arm, the shoulder, the hand, and the pelvis, including "Camper's chiasma", and represent Camper's most important contribution to surgical anatomy. - - "His most considerable scientific work in anatomy is 'Demonstrationum anatomico-pathologicarum. Liber primus continens brachii humani fabricam et morbos', Amsterdam, J. Schreuder and P. Mortier Jr., 1760. These very large plates on the upper limb were followed by a second volume, on the pelvis, published in 1762. The plates, some of which had accompanying outline diagrams, were engraved by Jacob von der Schley (1751-1779) from Camper's own drawings. There were no more in this projected series, but Camper's pupil, S. T. Soemmerring, after Camper's death, published 'lcones herniarum.' Camper's plates for these anatomical and pathological books take their place alongside the illustrations prepared by the artists Lairesse and Wanderlaar for the anatomists Bidloo and Albinus. Together the achievements of these atlases represent, both scientifically and aesthetically, a high point of Dutch civilization in the eighteenth century." K. Roberts and J.D.W. Tomlinson, The Fabric of the Body (1992), pp.340-343. - - " In his atlas, he describes the "chiasma" indicating the intersections of the superficial and deep flexor tendons, which are essential for the gripping function of the hand. His appointment to the post by the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria was made in consideration of his "special skill in eye diseases as well as his aptitude in finer anatomy". The professorship occupied by Barth remained the leader in ophthalmology with the subsequent professorship being instituted in Berlin only in 1866. - He was also a clinical teacher and was responsible for the training of several renowned physicians, notably Joseph Ehrenritter, Johann Adam Schmidt, Georg Joseph Beer, Georg Prochaska, ... and he established an Anatomical Museum that housed an assembly of 1576 specimens, some prepared by Barth himself. - - Heirs of Hippocrates No.951; Boyes, On the Shoulders of Giants, p. 12; also pp. 13-14).       Paris. chez H.L. Guerin & L.F. Delatour. 1760.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book 4to, 26cm, first edition, lxxx,383,27,10p., with 17 folding plates, in contemporary full mottled calf boards, expertly rebacked (early) in tan calf, real decorated raised bands, gilt borders and decorations in the panels, crushed crimson morocco label gilt, marbled endpapers, clean, a fine attractive copy (cgc/snds) - Nissen 545. DSB. DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU, Henri-Louis, (1700-1782). His major interest, and contribution to technology and society, was in agriculture. The first half of the eighteenth century had witnessed the beginning of a technological renaissance in agriculture, chiefly in England, where it was notably celebrated in the writings of Jethro Tull, whose major work, Horse-Hoeing Husbandry, was published in 1733. Although the ideas of Tull and Duhamel enjoyed substantial popularity among a progressive group of French landowners, the opposition - either in the form of active criticism or in the passive inertia of an almost medieval agrarian society - was too strong for France to enjoy the rapid agricultural changes which occurred in England and, shortly after, in Scotland. However, enough progress was made for Duhamel to receive recognition for his pioneering work during his lifetime. (DSB). .

[6], iv, 151, [5], xliv pp. 1771 book lots, unpriced + 247 art lots, all prices and some buyer's names in contemporary MS. With two states of the portrait by Cochin, one "aux armes," the other with the name of the former owner. Bound in 19th-century French half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, full-gilt spine, lettered and dated, made marbled endpapers, top edge painted vermilion, green silk bookmark, extremities trifle rubbed, nice copy with many deckles preserved. The sale of books took place 25 June to 12 July, 1760; the art on 24 November 1760 (some sources emend this to 9-17 February, 1761). This fine copy belonged to the great painter and Villeneuve's own art curator Jean-Baptiste Descamps (1714-1791), printed on superior paper and containing two states of the Villeneuve's portrait by Watelet after Cochin. This is the two-part sale catalogue of the important collection of Claude Alexandre de Villeneuve, Comte de Vence, Lieutenant-Général des Armées du Roy, commandant à la Rochelle, & Colonel du Régiment Royal-Corse. The first component of the catalogue is the sale of the Library, the second being the sale of a selection of the most significant works of art (here with all the prices realized in contemporary MS). The auctioneer divided the books into two principal groups: A). History; B). everything else (the former outnumbers the latter by two to one). Of especial interest to Villeneuve was the study of Provence: there are 225 titles covering its geography, history, government, law, and literature, as well as genealogies of illustrious Provençois. Villeneuve's library has been recently described as one of the most important in France at that time (SOURCE: François Moureau, "La plume et le plomb: espaces de l'imprimé et du manuscrit au siècle des Lumières," 2006). Not in North, Grolier Club; not in Taylor; not in Blogie. Friedhelm Beckmann, "Franzosische Privatbibliotheken," p. 125 (in: Archiv fur Geschichte des Buchwesens, XXXI, 1988). Villeneuve's collection of paintings, drawings and prints is justly considered to be among the foremost of his day, selected with discernment by J.-B. Descamps, the author of the influential "La Vie des peintres flamands, allemands et hollandaise" (1753-1763), for which see especially Vol. II, p. 165 ("Le Cabinet de M. Le Comte de Vence"). The sale included major masterpieces by non-French artists such as Maes, Steenwyck the Elder, Breughel the Elder, and Rembrandt. Only 5% of the lots failed to sell. We note with interest the unsold (?) lot 179, an ink drawing of Villeneuve by Charles-Nicolas Cochin -- almost certainly the same drawing used to cut the engraved portrait found at the beginning of the volume. REFERENCE: Lugt 1121. The Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana Sammelband, containing the two Villeneuve catalogues and four others (all but one priced), realized $2,640 eight years ago (Christie's New York, 23 March 2005, lot 466). This is the only other copy we've seen on the market. PROVENANCE: "Descamps 1760" (on title page) -- Louis Clement de Ris (1820-1882), purchased by him in 1864. Ris invariably employed the title "Comte" although as a child he was adopted and the title was not passed on to him. He became a great art collector and served as a Conservateur at the Louvre and subsequently at Versailles.

Du Culte Des Dieux Fetiches, Ou Parallele De L'ancienne Religion De L'egypte Avec La Religion Actuelle De Nigritie

Anon, 1760-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 1st ed. Full contemporary mottled calf. 5 raised bands. Solid binding. Negligible split along bottom-most edges spine. All edges red. Marbled end pages. Generally clean, unmarked pages. Perforated stamp on title page. 285 pages. 17 cm. French Enlightenment Philosophy. An important work in sociology, anthropology and comparative religion. In this work de Brosses introduced the concept of fetishism in religious practice worshiping animals and objects. "De Brosses was a pioneer of the science of comparative religion. In his memoir Du culte des dieux fétiches., reprinted in the Encyclopédie [Encyclopedie methodique], he combated the then prevailing tendency to interpret ancient mythologies and religious systems, notably that of Egypt, as profound symbolism and upheld the thesis that ancient Egyptian religion did not differ substantially from the primitive cults of native Africa. The work, which the French Academy refused to print in its transactions and which gave rise to violent attacks, anticipates the modern anthropological method of approach to the history of religions." (Robert Briffault, Encyclopedia of Social Sciences) Brunet I 1277. A side note: Karl Marx read de Brosses work in German. De Brosses's work had significant impact on Marx's intellectual consideration of religion. See Roland Boer's Marxism and Religion: A Complete and Annotated Bibliography for additional references.

        Studi di Pittura

1760. PIAZZETTA, Giambattista. Studi di Pittura già dissegnati da Giambatista Piazzetta ed ora con l'intaglio di Marco Pitteri. [6], 11, [3] ff. With an additional engraved title from the French edition of 1764. Illustrated with an engraved title-page vignette, head- and tailpieces, one of the latter with an etched self-portrait of Piazzetta dated 1738, plus 48 engraved plates in pairs numbered I-XXIV after drawings by Piazzetta. Oblong folio, 308 x 425 mm, contemporary Italian quarter calf over speckled paper boards. Venice: Giambattista Albrizzi, 1760. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of Piazzetta's drawing manual, one of the finest Venetian illustrated books of the Settecento, which contains the only surviving etching by the master himself, a self-portrait executed in 1738, and numerous engravings based on Piazzetta's drawings. The Studi di pittura was conceived by Piazzetta's friend and publisher, Giambattista Albrizzi, as an instructional manual for aspiring artists. The Piazzetta drawings were executed specifically for this book and were intended to illustrate the artistic theories espoused by the emerging Venetian Academy, as of 1750 under the direction of Piazzetta himself. Piazzetta produced twenty-four drawings for the Studi di pittura at Albrizzi's request shortly before the painter's death, in 1754. Albrizzi in turn commissioned two of Italy's finest engravers, Francesco Bartolozzi and Marco Pitteri, to reproduce Piazzetta's twenty-four drawings in a distinctive, prescribed engraving style; a total of forty-eight sheets resulted, i.e., two prints for each of Piazzetta's studies. The two complementary sets of engravings were interleaved in the finished Studi di pittura, affording the student two contrasting interpretations of Piazzetta's drawings. Bartolozzi's spare and linear prints are intended to highlight the character of Piazzetta's mastery of outline drawing; Pitteri's interpretations, on the other hand, reproduce the dramatic chiaroscuro effects intending to show Piazzetta's skill in delineating three dimensional form. The subject matter covers a range of themes addressed by eighteenth-century academies of art, where students trained first by copying plaster casts and then later drawing nudes from life. A series of multiple studies illustrate hands, feet, ears and the like seen from five or six points of view on each sheet. Larger views of male and female torsos and reclining nudes follow, along with images of saints, infants, and costumes, all themes a Venetian student of painting was expected to master. Piazzetta's love of the human form is evident and ubiquitous in all of these delicate engravings. Accompanying the Piazzetta illustrations are fifteen chapters of text considering the principles of artistic practice. Albrizzi borrowed chapters from the Bolognese academician Gian-Pietro Cavazzoni Zannotti's Alcuni avvertimenti per lo incamminamento di un giovane alla pittura. Zannotti's text advises aspiring artists how to select a teacher (maestro) and then addresses the formal properties of works of art, i.e., colour, symmetry, anatomy, perspective, gesture, and costume. Students are encouraged to examine the practice and opinions of important masters like Vasari, Leonardo, Raphael, Carracci, and Bassano and are advised to copy directly from their works. The advice offered by the Studi di pittura was apparently taken quite seriously, for the volume is said to have had "grande importanza per i giovani allievi dell'Accademia" (Precerutti-Garberi). "The Studi di pittura also contains a short but reliable biography of Piazzetta by Albrizzi himself. Embedded in the decorative tailpiece of the Studi is a small etching dated 1738 and apparently the only one that Piazzetta ever made that may be a self-portrait in Rembrandt's manner" (Alice Binion). A few instances of pale spotting, extremities of paperboards with repairs; overall in fine original condition. PROVENANCE: Arthur and Charlotte Vershbow, with their ex-libris. George Knox, Piazzetta (Washington, 1983), 21, 210-15. Precerutti-Garberi, Giambattista Piazzetta e l'Accademia (Milan, 1971).
