Pages 172 and 387 incorrectly numbered 372 and 397 respectively. 4?, twentieth century (third quarter) mottled period sheep (covers somewhat warped), spine with raised bands in five compartments, darker leather label, gilt letter, text-block edges sprinkled red from a previous binding. Some soiling throughout; tissue repair to small hole on half-title, not affecting text; date written in old ink at foot of title-page; tissue repair to fore-edge on final 6 leaves, not affecting text. Overall in good condition. ---- Fourth edition: "a book by a Brazilian about Brazil which was widely read in the eighteenth century and which is of great importance today for the portrait it gives of the social life, manners and customs at that time of the common people in Bahia and Minas Geraes" (Borba de Moraes [1983] II, 660). The @Compendio was once considered the first Brazilian novel.Marques Pereira's work on Catholic moral philosophy is arranged as an account of a journey from S?o Paulo to Bahia, illustrated by comments on sin, vice, the Ten Commandments, etc. The author mentions many events in Brazilian history, including Duguay-Trouin's capture of Rio de Janeiro, the Minas Geraes gold rush and the "War of the Emboabas."Marques Pereira (1689?-1730?) was probably born in Cayr? (Bahia), although Rodolfo Garcia thought him a native of Portugal (see Borba de Moraes and Bandeira). He is known to have left the town of Camam? in 1704, after breaking a law, and probably moved to Minas Geraes, where he witnessed the gold rush. He died in Bahia. The @Compendio was first published in Lisbon, 1728, and again in 1731 and 1752; a fifth edition appeared in 1765. The first edition is a work of the utmost rarity, the second almost as rare as the first, and none of the others is common. The fact that the book went through this many editions in less than forty years testifies to its enormous popularity: "Este livro, que raros ser?o capazes de ler integralmente, foi um dos mais lidos no seu tempo e no imediatamente posterior Ö." (VerÌssimo p. 76). A ghost edition of 1718 is sometimes cited; all references to it can be traced back to J.M. de Macedo (see InnocÍncio and Blake).---- Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 659-70: "The first edition is very rare, the others are less scarce but are not common. Copies in good condition are difficult to find Ö." Blake VI, 319-20: citing editions of 1718 and 1724 (which he had not seen), 1728 and 1760. InnocÍncio VI, 315; XVII, 114. Barbosa Machado III, 505.         Original Poems and Translations.

A Millar, London, 1760 - 2 blank leaves + TP + 1 leaf = Dedication page + [v]-x = Preface + [xi] = Erratta noted + [xiii]-[xiv] = Contents + [1]-188 + 2 blank leaves, Octavo. First Edition. First Edition of Beattie's First Book.First edition of Beatties' first book which he published at the age of 25. Some of these poems had already appeared in the "Scots magazine" between 1756 and 1759. In later life, Beattie sought to suppress the work by buying and destroying all of the copies he could find. Like most who have tried such an expedient, he was not very successful. While a number of copies are to be found in institutional libraries, it is an extremely uncommon book on the market. This copy with three lovely and informative contemporary manuscript notes by someone with intimate knowledge of the writing of this book. The first, on page 40, identifies An Elegy Occassioned by the Death of Lady as being "written in 1756" and identifying the Lady as "Mrs Walker, Sister of Lord Monboddo". In page 66, the subject of the Epitaph on ***** is identified as being on "himself". Finally, on page 77, the translation of Lucretius is noted as being written "at the desire of Lord Gardenstone". The printing of this book is unusual for its time in that there are no catch-words except where a new poem begins on the following page. Contemporary full-calf binding. The spine has five gilt bands and the title gilt on a red field. The title page just a bit foxed with a small inscription neatly erased. Light waterstain to upper right corners of pp. 5-16. Overall, a lovely contemporary copy of an uncommon book. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The Sportsman’s pocket companion: being a striking likeness or portraiture of the most eminent race horses and stallions [.] drawn by James Roberts and engraved by Henry Roberts.

London, printed for R. & R. Baldwin, c. 1760. - 8vo (223 x 148 mm). 40 engraved plates, some with vignette at foot, engraved index leaf. Modern olive green morocco gilt by Eighton, covers with triple gilt fillet, spine in six compartments, gilt lettered direct in second, others richly gilt, raised bands, top edge gilt. Fine series of plates, each depicting a famous horse with his rider or stable-hand, and recording its pedigree, qualities and racing record, together with the owner's name. The final plate shows the most famous of all, the Godolphin Arabian (here called the "Bay Arabian, the property of the Right Hon.ble the Earl of Godolphin"), foaled in Yemen around 1724: "This extraordinary horse became a private stallion soon after his arrival in this kingdom, and got a greater number of fine horses of just temper with superior speed than any Arab ever did. He was the Sire of Lath, Dismal, Cade, Bajazet, Babraham, Phenix, Dormouse, Regulus, Skewball, Sultan, Blanck, Slugg, Noble, Tarquin, Blossom, the Godolphin Gelding, Shepherdess, Amelia, and many others besides stallions and brood mares, all in the highest esteem; he died at Hogmagogg Hills, Dec. 1753, in the 29th year of his age". - Among the other horses are Lath, the Godolphin Arabian's offspring by Roxana; Basto (son of the Byerly Turk); Old Scar, whose ancestry included the Oglethorpe Arabian and Darcy's Yellow Turk, etc. The horses pictured all ran between 1708 and 1755. The first edition was published in about 1760. Rare, only two copies recorded in ABPC/AE Online. ESTC records two issues, one published and sold by Henry Roberts, the other printed for R. and R. Baldwin (as here): just one location is given for the first issue (Winterthur), and one for the second (BL). Huth records the work under a variant title, and also notes an 1820 edition. - Plate 12 shorter at margins, some spotting and browning, heavier at margins. A most handsome copy. Huth 38.         Plan Tres Eact et vue de la Ville, Baye, et des Nouvelles Fortifications de Gibraltar

Gibraltar: Albert Charl Seutter. unbound. Map. Copperplate engraving with ornamental coloring. Image measures 19.5 x 22.5". This beautiful plan of Gibraltar depicts the bay, city and strait of Gibraltar in elaborate detail. Dating to circa 1760, the map depicts the plan of the fortifications. The monolithic Rock of Gibraltar can be seen in profile, brings to mind the Greek myth of the Mons Calpe (Rock of Gibraltar) marking one of the limits of the known world. A key to the markings on the map is included in the top left quadrant. Ships can be seen sailing in the surrounding waters. Along the bottom of the map, two beautiful seascapes are included. The first depicts a view of the Strait of Gibraltar from the Mediterranean. The second depicts the view of the city and the straits of Gibraltar from the Atlantic Ocean. Perhaps the most notable feature of the map is the enormous title cartouche. Spanning the entire height of the map, it depicts Greek Gods and myths in stunning detail. The map is in good condition, some scuffs around margins, presented in ornamental coloring with some spotting at places. Matthaus Seutter the Elder (1678-1757) was an engraver, globe maker and map publisher based in Augsburg. Seutter was awarded the title of Imperial Geographer by Karl VI in 1731. Only four of his thirteen children were involved in the firm. Albrecht Carl Seutter worked with his father as an engraver and mapmaker. After Matthaus Seutter's death in 1757, his son-in-law T.C. Lotter carried on the business. This map is a rare example of Albrecht Carl Seutter's work.

[Op. 1]. Six Sonates A Violon Seul et Basse Dediées A Monsieur le Baron de Lathan Officier des Gardes Françoises... 1er Œuvre. Gravé par Mdme Oger. Prix 9 [livre]... Avec Privilege du Roy. Signed by the composer

Paris: L'Auteur. [1760]. Folio. Disbound. 1f. (title), [1] (dedication), 2-27 (music), [i] (Privilege Général by Louis XV dated January 13, 1760). Engraved. Notated on two staves: solo violin and figured bass. Signed "P. Gavinies," at foot of dedication. From the collection of André Meyer, Paris, with handstamp to verso of title: "Provenant de la collection musicale d'André Meyer Décédé en Mai 1974 F. Meyer Octobre 84." Some soiling and offsetting; pp. 9-10 ceased at lower right corner; final leaf creased at upper outer corner; small stians to dedication and pp. 15-16; inner margin of title guarded. . First Edition, first issue. RISM G736. Lesure p. 225. Hirsch III, 212. "Gaviniés was best known to his contemporaries as a violinist; nearly every aspect of his playing was praised... [His] works for the violin, comprising sonatas, duos, concertos and études, reveal something of his own virtuosity. All of the sonatas and duos have three movements. Many of the slow middle movements are romances. In the early works, some of the finales take the form of a moderate theme and variations or a minuet. The first movements of the second set of sonatas usually have two strongly contrasting themes. The entire range of the violin is exploited, with unusual emphasis on the lower register. Double stopping is employed in various ways and there is much ornamentation, despite the broad, sweeping, melodic curves. Gaviniés was extremely explicit regarding dynamics and articulation, although fingerings were added infrequently. In the duos, the violins have parts of equal importance." Jeffrey Cooper and Anthony Ginter in Grove Music Online. The Meyer collection, formed over a period of some 75 years, was one of the most important collections of printed music, musical autographs, and books on music, with hundreds of items dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries.

[Madrid. 1760]. - [5]pp. plus integral blank leaf inscribed. Folio. Dbd. Maltese cross at head of title. Contemporary manuscript inscription and later pencil inscription at top of first page. Accomplished in manuscript at Buen Retiro, Spain on December 28, 1770, signed by Juan Manuel Crespo with additional annotation on last page of printed text and additional inscription on verso of last page of text. Integral blank leaf with manuscript note related to the cedula on recto and verso. A very good copy. A rare detailed royal cedula issued by Charles III, King of Spain, ordering a general pardon of accused individuals to be enacted throughout the Spanish Indies. Citing earlier royal proclamations issued previously by Charles III concerning clemency for prisoners, this cedula reprints texts of decrees from January and February 1760. While most prisoners were to receive pardons, a long list of exceptions, based on the January 28 cedula, is provided. These included those accused of secular and religious treason, killing a priest, counterfeiting money, arson, blasphemy, sodomy, robbery, falsehoods, and duelling. Numerous other details regarding the earlier clemencies are also provided. The present royal amnesty was to be distributed to the Viceroys, Presidents, Audiencias, Governors, and other judges throughout the Indies in order that this resolution by properly executed. This copy, accomplished in manuscript at Buen Retiro on December 28, 1770, is signed by Juan Manuel Crespo with the additional annotation, "Yo El Rey. Por mandado del Rey Nuestro Señor." A manuscript inscription on the blank verso of the final printed page, dated February 27, 1762, confirms that the decree had been reviewed two days earlier by the President and other high officials in Santiago de Chile. A manuscript note in a separate hand on the recto and verso of the integral blank leaf provides additional information about the receipt of the document in Santiago in 1762. A rare and highly informative proclamation regarding royal pardons to be enacted throughout the Spanish New World and in Spain. Not in OCLC, Medina (BHA), or Palau.

La gnomonique pratique ou l'art de tracer les cadrans solaires avec la plu

à Paris: Chez Briasson, 1760. Fine. Chez Briasson, à Paris 1760, In 8 (12,5x19,7cm), (6) xxij, 404pp. (2) 35Pl., relié. - New edition, the original seems to have appeared in 1755; illustrated with a frontispiece by Gazot, engraved by Manner and 34 folding plates at the end of volume engraved by Meunier, and a large folding map of France drawn by Good. Full mottled calf time. Back tooled raised. part of title in red morocco. 3 corners bumped. Good copy. Undoubtedly one of the best generals treated gnomonic also well illustrated, produced under the auspices of the Academy of Science by Benedictine scholar and scientist François Bespine de Celles (1709-1779). The advantage of this treaty is entirely contained in the clarity of his practice and exposure, which allow easy and thorough application. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

Selbstverlag, Frankfurt 1760 - (1) ff. engraved title-page with putti and calligraphy instruments, (3) ff., 54 engraved plates, (1) p. ¿Nachricht.¿ Bound in early half-vellum with patterned paper over boards; faint damp mark to upper left corner of some leaves. Generally fresh. An unusually fresh example of the rare first edition of a Baroque German penmanship textbook self-published by this ¿Schul-, Schreib- und Rechnenmeister¿ from Frankfurt am Main, with 54 engraved plates. After assuring his readers that these methods have been honed throughout his tenure as a teacher of penmanship, Schirmer begins with simple morphological exercises¿single ligatures and glyphs¿that soon evolve into the writing of whole words, sentences, and finally paragraphs, a process that is repeated for each script: Kurrent, Kanzlei (chancellery), Fraktur, and Lateinische Cursiv (with a page on Rotunda and Quadrata). While this accretative method is not uncommon, Schirmer¿s use of dotted or unbroken lines to mark the angle, length, and space between typographical features is more unusual¿as is a plate comprised exclusively of tails, loops and figure-eights, to be practiced as if they were capital letters. More visually striking are the 25 plates that follow, among which are a number of features rarely seen in contemporary Schreibmeisterbucher: entire plates devoted to a single word, exercises in trompe l¿oeil, and the juxtaposition of detailed figurative engravings with their more decorative counterparts. In these plates, Schirmer first provides a broad selection of edifying quotes in each script, often with elaborately decorated headlines. The ornamentation reaches a pitch in two plates of single words¿Wir and Ich¿whose capitals blossom into elegant intertwining mazes of leaves, scrolls, and fasces. The volume also contains a plate in which the crosshatched and shaded figures of a horse, swan, soldier, etc., are mirrored in the looping command-of-hand drawings popularized by the 17th-century Italian masters. Yet Schirmer¿s last exercises, such as the trompe-l¿oeil calling-cards, sample receipts and formal business letters, seem to suggest a uniquely German sense of calligraphy, not as fanciful (i.e. Italian) doodling, but as an artistic discipline of purpose and profit. OCLC: Library of Congress, Winterthur, Newberry, Metropolitan Museum. * Bonacini 1634, Doede 176; S.K.B. 4917. Not in Hofer (or Osley). New editions of the work appeared in 1772 and 1773; this is the earliest edition we have been able to locate. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ELIXIR DE VIE. . . [manuscript caption title]

ca. 1760s], [France - Bifolium, approximately 10 x 7½ inches. [3]pp. of text. Early folds, light dampstains in corners, mild foxing. Very good, untrimmed, in a fine custom cloth folding case with printed paper label. 18th-century manuscript recipe for the "long life elixir" closely associated with a 17th-century Swedish doctor known variously as "Samst," "Vornets," "Xermet," "Yerner," "Yernest," "Gernest," and, here, "Guernai." The recipe, which has ancient origins and a millennia-long history of revision and rediscovery, has been widely credited in its present form to the Swedish doctor at least since the 1760s, when several similar manuscripts and a handful of printed notices appeared throughout France. In a 2012 article in the REVUE D’HISTOIRE DE LA PHARMACIE, "> ou > précieux manuscrit de > nouvellement découvert," Jean-Pierre Grelaud argues persuasively for a 1700-1710 date of another recently discovered—and, at this point, earliest known—comparable manuscript, suggesting a date no later than the turn of the 18th century for the death of the Swedish doctor. The true name of the doctor has never been conclusively determined, nor specific details (or proof) of his life uncovered. It is certain, however, that his formula either was derived from or shared common roots with recipes Paracelsus discussed during the 16th century. A consistent key element was Venetian theriac (here, "thériaque de Venise," known also as "Venice treacle" and therica andromachi), which is usually thought to have originated in Greece, particularly with Andromachus the Elder of Crete, in the first century C.E. This compound traditionally contained viper flesh, scorpion venom, opium, and myrrh among its scores of ingredients and appears to have traveled as far as China in its first several centuries. The elixir of life, in general, appears to have origins as old as Babylon and was discussed extensively by European and Arabic alchemists, eventually attaching itself to the legends of Nicolas Flamel and the Comte de Saint Germain. Most early copies of the present version of the recipe inform us that the original manuscript was found in the papers of a Swedish doctor who died at an advanced age (almost invariably 104, but here 110) from a fall from a horse. The "secret" had existed in his family for "several centuries," and daily consumption helped his grandfather, father, and mother live similarly long lives (in the present copy, to 130, 112, and 104 years, respectively). The handful of known 18th-century examples of the recipe are remarkably consistent regarding the elixir’s ingredients and their proportions, method of preparation, and uses. When there is some variation among the lists of ingredients, it tends to occur in the proportion of aloe (this copy shows the greatest amount, at "un once et trois gros" to the single "gros" of most other elements) and rhubarb (here, a gros and a half) and in the specific names used for the different ingredients (e.g., "safran du levant" here is usually "le meilleur safran," sometimes "d’orient" or "oriental"). Unique to the present manuscript is an interesting final paragraph referring to a "frere Nicolas de friardel," presumably a monk at the Augustinian priory of Saint-Cyr at Friardel in Calvados, Lower Normandy. Brother Nicolas has mentioned that using the elixir regularly for two years has largely cured him of a "cruel gout" which had "robbed him of the use of his feet and hands."
