A Amsterdam, 1764. AN IMPARTIAL ACCOUNT OF LIEUT. COL. BRADSTREET'S EXPEDITION TO FORT FRONTENAC. TO WHICH ARE ADDED, A FEW REFLECTIONS ON THE CONDUCT OF THAT ENTERPRIZE, AND THE ADVANTAGES RESULTING FROM ITS SUCCESS. By a Volunteer on the Expedition

London, 1759. Modern half calf and marbled boards, gilt morocco label. Near fine. A scarce and important account of the French and Indian War, probably written by Bradstreet himself, a rising officer in the British Army. This work gives a detailed account of his most famous exploit, an audacious and skillfully coordinated expedition in the summer of 1758 through the New York wilderness and across Lake Ontario to destroy the French Fort Frontenac, a major turning point in the French and Indian War. A strong argument is also made that the time was ripe for seizing control of the Lakes from France, and that British forces needed to take a more offensive posture, the implication being that British commander James Abercromby should be replaced. "One of the best contemporary accounts of the war, possibly written by Bradstreet himself" - Howes. A copy of this sold at Christie's in June 2011 for $12,500.

AN ENQUIRY INTO THE CAUSES OF THE ALIENATION OF THE DELAWARE AND SHAWANESE INDIANS FROM THE BRITISH INTEREST, AND INTO THE MEASURES TAKEN FOR RECOVERING THEIR FRIENDSHIP...TOGETHER WITH THE REMARKABLE JOURNAL OF CHRISTIAN FREDERIC POST...WITH NOTES BY THE EDITOR EXPLAINING SUNDRY INDIAN CUSTOMS, &c. WRITTEN IN PENNSYLVANIA

London, 1759. 19th-century straight-grain morocco, gilt, spine gilt, gilt inner dentelles. Rear hinge somewhat rubbed. Toned, some light pencil marginalia. Map mounted on linen. Very good. The Frank Deering copy, with his bookplate. A work of the greatest importance for the history of the French and Indian War. Thomson argues that the arrogance and greed of the colonial government of Pennsylvania caused the rupture between the Pennsylvania Indians and the British, and temporarily forced the natives to the French side of the fight in the Ohio country. "Apparently printed at Benjamin Franklin's expense as part of his campaign to discredit the Proprietary government of Pennsylvania" - Streeter. "It was one of the most important works on relations with the Indians that had been published up to that time" - Graff. Christian Post, a Moravian missionary, travelled to the Ohio country in 1758 to negotiate with the Indians, and won them back to the British side. His journal of that trip makes up the second part of this book. The map shows Pennsylvania, with various important western points located.

ITA

AN HISTORICAL REVIEW OF THE CONSTITUTION AND GOVERNMENT OF PENNSYLVANIA

London, 1759. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, leather label. Spine ends chipped, corners worn, front hinge cracked but holding by cords. Titlepage with some marginal age toning. Light occasional foxing and uniform toning, but generally clean internally. Good. This book was for many years attributed to Benjamin Franklin, but it was more likely written by his co-agent in London, Richard Jackson, with Franklin's advice. The work was essentially an argument made, in reviewing the history of the province, for the rights of the Assembly over the Proprietors. An important publication.

        Manuscript in Latin on Vellum

Milan 1350 - NUMEROUS BLUE AND RED INITIALS 8vo. (12x16.5 cm); ff. [234]; [1]8, [2]10, [3]10, [4]10, [5]10, [6]10, [7]8, [8]8, [9]8, [10]8, [11]8, [12]11, [13]8, [14]8, [15]8, [16]4, [17]10, [18]22, [19]10, [20]10, [21]10, [22]10, [23]10, [24]10, [25]10; 25 to 31 lines, double column in black ink with red captions and passages, two historiated initials in red, blue, pink, off-white and liquid gold with floral extensions along margins, numerous initials in blue or red; leaf 210 deliberately excised at early date, probably erroneously as a result of the catchword being misplaced on 29 rather than 210; initial and final two leaves with mainly marginal spotting, a few leaves with minor abrasions, spots or smudges; generally a good clean and very well margined copy in English Regency calf, covers with gilt-tooled borders; rebacked and with restorations. This Latin handbook with instructions and liturgical texts for saying mass for the priest’s use is of Milanese origin as is clear from the style of the historiated initials, and the script, produced by more than one scribe, has the vestiges of a French influenced hand. It opens with ‘Incipit ordo missalis secundum consuetudinem Curiae Romani’ and the splendid initial depicting King Solomon at prayer. Leaf [99] opens with the second historiated initial, depicting Christ on the cross. The rubricated passages indicate the priest’s gestures and liturgical actions; the size of handwriting varies throughout the text in order to mark different parts of the liturgy. Because of the daily use of missals for the celebration of mass, their survival rate has been lower than of other liturgical volumes and their production was much smaller than for books of hours. Consequently nice copies especially from the fourteenth century are rare. Provenance: Calligraphic inscription on initial blank paper leaf stating that the book was ‘once resting (olim quieverat)’ in the library of Abbé Luigi Celotti (1759-1843), an Italian art dealer and collector of illuminated miniatures and that, in 1821, it was given by Henry Drury to one William Thornton of Harrow. Henry Drury (1778-1841) was rector of Fingest, Buckinghamshire, from 1820 master at Harrow, and a renowned book collector, whose manuscripts were sold via auction in 1827 in London. He was an original member of the Roxburghe Club and a friend of the bibliographer Dibdin, who mentioned him repeatedly in his writings. Latin [Attributes: Hard Cover]

- Small typographical ornament on title page. Two woodcut initials. 18, 9, (1) pp. 4?, early plain beige wrappers (worn at spine). Overall in very good condition. Old ink manuscript foliation, "130-143", in upper outer corners of recto of each leaf. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION of these thirty sonnets related to the T vora Conspiracy, written by a woman. The first eighteen sonnets celebrate the fact that D. JosÈ is alive and well after the assassination attempt. Remarkably, no less than twelve sonnets that follow are addressed to the would-be assassins, berating them for their impious plan: "Aos impios authores, e sacrilegos rÈos da execranda conspiraÁam." Although these sonnets are set in smaller type (2 sonnets per page rather than one), the tactless attention they give to the conspirators may explain why this work is so rare.A final sonnet is "em applauso da authora desta obra," by an anonymous nun, a cousin of the author. On September 3, 1758, when D. JosÈ was returning from a visit to his mistress - one of the aristocratic T vora family - he was attacked by ruffians and wounded. Sebasti?o JosÈ de Carvalho e Melo, who had earned the king's trust by taking control after the Lisbon earthquake in 1755, promptly arrested two men. Under torture they confessed that they were following orders from the T vora family. The leading members of the T vora family were publicly executed in a gruesome spectacle on January 13, 1759. The remaining women, children, and men in the family were imprisoned in separate convents and monasteries and obliged to profess religious vows. The lands and other wealth of the houses of T vora, Atouguia, Aveiro and Vila Nova were confiscated by the crown; the arms of the T voras were destroyed and use of the name "T vora" forbidden. The licenses of this work date to June, August, and September 1759, the same year as the executions.Historians still debate whether there was such a thing as the "T vora Conspiracy." The aristocracy of Portugal did resent the enormous power of Sebasti?o JosÈ de Carvalho e Melo; but it was singularly convenient that all prominent members of the the T vora family and their allies were suddenly and quite permanently out of the picture, allowing the future MarquÍs de Pombal to consolidate his power.---- InnocÍncio XVI, 356: not supplying any further information on the author; calling for 18, 9 pp.; giving the size as 8?
