Lettre a son excellence monseigneur le prince de Talleyrand Périgord,... au sujet de la traite des negres.London, Schulze & Dean, 1814. Large 8vo. Contemporary half tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine.

Hogg, The African slave trade and its suppression 2488b; Ragatz, British Caribbean history, p. 569. First edition of the French translation, published simultaneously with the original English, of an open letter by the famous English abolitionist William Wilberforce (1759-1833), addressed to the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord (1754-1838). Wilberforce gives in great detail the many considerations that led Britain to abolish the slave trade, hoping to persuade France to abolish it as well and even join Britain in its civilizing projects in Africa. However, France did not consent to Wilberforce's proposals and officially abolished in 1848. Included at the end is an appendix with extracts from various others, supporting the statements made by Wilberforce in the letter. Some damp stains throughout. Binding slightly worn along the extremities. Overall in good condition.

        Essai sur l'administration des terres.

Paris: chez Jean-Thomas Hérissant,, 1759. 2 works in 1 volume, octavo (200 x 122 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, red morocco label to spine, compartments and raised bands elaborately decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges red. Engraved head- and tailpieces. Bookplate and Bibliotheque d'Hauteville library ticket to front pastedown. With the contents page repositioned after the avertissement. Spine ends and corners bumped, extremities lightly rubbed, hinges cracked but firm, endpapers a little marked and browned with contents lightly foxed, a very good copy. First and only edition of this pseudonymously authored treatise on agricultural reform originally attributed to Francois Quesnay by Barbier and published one year after the appearance of Quesnay's hugely influential Tableau économique. As a result of the statements made within, which emphasise the importance of agriculture to the national economy and strongly support contemporary Physiocratic doctrines, it was wrongly assumed to be authored by Quesnay. It is scarce in commerce and OCLC locates only one copy in institutional holdings (Libris Consortium Stockholm). Essai sur l'administration des terres is bound together with a first edition L'art de cultiver les peupliers d'Italie by Pelée de Saint-Maurice, published in Paris in 1762. This short treatise provides readers with advice on cultivating the poplar tree which was introduced in France in 1745 and quickly became the preferred tree for river and canal banks.

        Planespheres celestes

Artist: Lapie Pierre M ( - 1870) ; issued in: ; date: ca 1828 1759 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Centerfold restored; - size (in cm): 46 x 61; - description: Map shows the miky-way of our galaxy in two hemispheres.;In Meteorologica Aristotle, wrote that the Greek philosophers Anaxagoras and Democritus proposed that the Milky Way might consist of distant stars. However, Aristotle himself believed the Milky Way to be caused by the ignition of the fiery exhalation of some stars which were large, numerous and close together; and that the ignition takes pace in the upper part of the atmosphere, in the region of the world which is continuous with the heavenly motions. The Neoplatonist philosopher Olympiodorus the Younger criticized this view, arguing that if the Milky Way were sublunary, it should appear different at different times and places on Earth, and that it should have parallax, which it does not. In his view, the Milky Way was celestial. This idea would be influential later in the Islamic world.;Actual proof of the Milky Way consisting of many stars came in 1610 when Galileo Galilei used a telescope to study the Milky Way and discovered that it was composed of a huge number of faint stars. In a treatise in 1755, Immanuel Kant, drawing on earlier work by Thomas Wright, speculated (correctly) that the Milky Way might be a rotating body of a huge number of stars, held together by gravitational forces akin to the Solar System but on much larger scales. The resulting disk of stars would be seen as a band on the sky from our perspective inside the disk. Kant also conjectured that some of the nebulae visible in the night sky might be separate galaxies themselves, similar to our own. Kant referred to both the Milky Way and the extragalactic nebulae, as an island universes, a term still current up to the 1930s.; -vita of the artist: Pierre M. Lapie (1779 ñ 1850) was a French cartographer and engraver. He was the father of cartographer Alexandre Emile Lapie. Lapie was a Colonel in the French army, where he worked in the corps of topographical engineers. Lapie worked closely with his son and published works together and individually. The work of Lapie and his son was influential on German commercial map makers in the 19th century. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Instituiçao da Companhia Geral de Pernambuco, e Paraiba.

Lisbon, Miguel Rodrigues. 1759. folio, 30 + (2)pp., with a large woodcut device on title incorporating the royal arms of King Joseph I, several old worm tracks (neatly repaired), mainly in the margins, part of two letters of title only partly printed, bound, probably in the early 20th century, in vellum-backed boards, the boards themselves covered with what appears to be an 18th century French legal document, spine lettered in red and black, a little worm damage at head of spine. Nonetheless, a good, crisp, copy. First edition. De Moraes, Bibliographia Brasiliana> p.353. Rodrigues, Bibl. Brasiliense> 698 (where he observes that the book is 'rare'). James Ford Bell C.477. Kress 5786. This was an inaugural address to Joseph I, King of Portugal, announcing the establishment by the Pombal government of the Company of Pernambuco and Paraiba, with information on the commerce of Brazil prior to the Company's existence. For the relevance of this company to the modern debates on so-called 'public-private partnerships' see Rodrigues and Sangster's article in Business History,> vol.54, issue 7, 2012. 'Based on archival sources, and considering the social, economic and political context, the study helps to enhance understanding of how the Portuguese enlightened despotic regime developed and connected the empire through a corporatist interface with a private company'. During the middle years of the 18th century five commercial colonial trading companies were established by the Portuguese. The C.G.P.P. was awarded the monopoly on produce from the entire Brazilian north east - traditionally the most developed area in the country because of its sugar industry.'

        Candide, ou l’Optimisme

Geneva: Gabriel Cramer, 1759. 12mo (161x95 mm). 299, [3 blank] pp. Woodcut ornament to title and tail-pieces, with penultimate leaf N7 (blank) present but final leaf N8 (instructions to the binder) a stub only. Contemporary Italian mottled sheep-backed boards, gilt spine with red morocco label (upper corners worn). Some light foxing and browning, mostly to upper margin, a very good, genuine copy.RARE FIRST EDITION. A nice copy of the true first edition, with the following issue points: the title ornament of spray, fruit and flowers is repeated at pp. 193 and 266; p. 103, line 4, has the misprint 'que ce ce fut' (corrected to 'que ce fut' in later editions); p. 125, line 4, has 'précisément' (corrected to 'précipitamment' in later editions); with Voltaire's revisions on p. 31 eliminating an unnecessary paragraph break, and on p. 41 the rewritten several short sentences on the Lisbon earthquake. This first edition does not preserve the cancelled paragraph on p. 242 critical of German poets (beginning "Candide était affligé").The bibliographical history of this book has been exasperatingly complex and confused, not least because before handing over a final manuscript to Cramer, Voltaire went behind his back and sent a slightly different version of the manuscript to John Nourse, a printer in London, who may well have dispatched copies to other publishers. The result was that within weeks of the first edition of Candide appearing in Geneva, sixteen other editions appeared in Paris, London and Amsterdam. The identification of the present issue as the true editio princeps, already supposed by Bengesco and Gagnebin, was recently confirmed by the cumulative analyses of Ira Wade, Giles Barber, and Stephen Weissman: the Genevan printing must be considered earlier than the other three editions containing 299 pages published in 1759 and than the thirteen others of different size printed in Europe in the same year.Around 1754 Voltaire "fled [from Berlin] to Geneva where he found and bought the ideal refuge, Ferney, four miles from the city. Here, just on French soil, he could enjoy the political liberty of Geneva with the social liberty of France. Here Candide, the most perfect of the light-weight parables which were his especial and peculiar forte, was written. Typically, it was published anonymously, and many times printed and pirated in its early years" (PMM).Drawing on the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 for inspiration, this conte philosophique became an almost instant best-seller with about 20,000 copies selling in the first year, in spite of initial censorship.Barber, 299G; Bengesco, 1434; Morize, 59a; PMM, 204.

Eliot traces the aggressions of "the papal yoke" from at least 1588, with the defeat of the Spanish Armada. "This open attempt being unsuccessful, our popish adversaries have ever since been forming plots and conspiracies to overthrow our religion and liberties." Eliot celebrates England's thwarting of their most recent effort, the defeat of Montcalm on the Plain of Abraham outside Quebec City. The French, says Eliot, have been a real nuisance-- "troublesome neighbors." Although "their numbers have been comparatively small, agreeable to the grasping temper that nation has ever discovered, they have been gradually drawing nearer to us, as if they hoped in process of time to drive us into the sea. They have been, for a long course of years, the cause of the wars we have had with the natives, they have supplied the Indians with arms and ammunition, they have filled them with prejudices against the English." He deplores "the most pernicious effects" of French domination of Nova Scotia upon the New England colonies; and lists the French aggressions against England in the New World from 1627 until the present.

Condition: Rebound in a cloth binding. Externally, very smart with just some light rubbing to the spine and boards. Internally, firmly bound.       Brunet III, cols. 918-919; Horn & Schenkling 13091 and 3093; Hünersdorff, Coffee, pp. 862-63; Nissen, BBI 1156; Stafleu & Cowan 4288; V.d. Velde, Mikroscoop IV, p. 213. First edition, with the rare final part, of one of the most beautiful works on microscopy issued during the 18th century, containing remarkable coloured plates of magnified insects, shells, plants, and parts of the microscope, and an especially illuminating and drawing apparatus. The first part also includes a description of the coffee plant (pp. 189-194); the plant itself, ''with details of the blossom and fruit is illustrated on plate 97, and in microscopic detail on plate 98'' (Hünersdorff). This "highly estimated work" (Brunet), was published in installments from 1759 onwards, though the complete first part is dated 1762. Before the first series of 100 plates was finished in 1763, the Nachleese , or first continuation, issued in five installments of ten plates each, was started in April 1762. In 1765 a second continuation was published in two installments, containing a 20 pp. description of a microscope on one plate and Winterschmidt's notes of 8 pages on a house-fly on one plate on another (the latter present here from another copy and loosely inserted). In 1776 the very rare third continuation was published posthumously as Letzte Beobachtungen seiner mikroskopischen Ergötzungen, welche ein nicht gemeines Nest mit der kleinsten Art von Schlupfwespen in Flockwolle enthalten (two pages with two hand-coloured plates) and Nebst der Beschreibung und Abbildung eines neuen und vollständigen Universalmikroskops, welches dreyerley Arten von Sonnenmikroskopen, ein Compositum, ein Anatomisches, ein Einfaches, und ein Hand- oder Spaziermikroskop; auch zweyerley Arten von Cameris Obscuris abgiebt. Herausgebracht und verfertigt von Wilhelm Burucker (eight pages with eight hand-coloured plates). This continuation was not incorporated in the later edition of 1804. Apart from the sophistication mentioned, a fine work in a contemporary binding.

Den opaginerad delen av andra delen innehåller ?Scheme and diary of the war, &c from the king?s entering Germany till the battle of Lützen, composed for the better understanding the three great campaings of 1630, 1631, 1632?, vilket följs av ett appendix med tal och brev av Gustav II Adolf.
