        Ponte trionfale

1757. Acquaforte, bulino e puntasecca, 1757, firmata in basso a destra. Etching, engraving and drypoint, 1757, signed on plate. A magnific impression, on contemporary laid paper, wide margins, very good condition. Plate pubblished in the 'Lettere di Giustificazione scritte a Milord Charlemont'. The primary attitude which characterised Piranesi's personality was an unequivocal disposition towards controversy, which distinguished the last thirty years of his life and, at the same time, furnished him with the indispensable vigour and constituted the foundations which were necessary for his outstanding achievements. However, his favourite means for upholding debates were not words but pictures, and his attempts to blame, defend himself and contend gave rise to some of his most extraordinary works. The first of these was the one under scrutiny, which included the letters written to the Irish aristocrat Lord Charlemont who, not only had not kept his promise to fund the Antichità Romane..., but also completely disregarded the complaint notes which Piranesi sent him. The text of the Lettere di Giustificazione..., published in Rome in 1757, reproduced two of his letters to Charlemont together with another one addressed to Father Peter Grant, who had volunteered to settle the question. This work outlined problems which were far more serious than a simple quarrel, delineating the changes which came about in the relationships between artists and their sponsors in the second half of the eighteenth century. The artist who, with his project, wanted to leave behind him an important milestone by describing ancient vestiges of Roman history, judged himself worthy of Lord Charlemont's esteem. Therefore, this work of complaint had the aim of separating the Irish aristocrat's name from the Antichità Romane... since he was regarded as an unworthy patron. This was true up to the point that Piranesi had cancelled from the title - page of the first volume the text with which he had dedicated it to him. In this work, apart from a few satirical vignettes concerning Charlemont, the artist reproduced small - size versions of the four main title - pages included in his primary archaeological composition. These diminutive masterpieces generated considerable excitement in the artist, who decided to include the plates in the new edition of the Opere Varie... published at the beginning of the 1760s.

Engraved allegorical frontispiece in vol. 1, engraved portrait of the author in vol. 2, 157 engraved plates, maps and plans (numbered I-CLIX, with plates CXL/CXLI and CXLII/CXLIII on two sheets, 5 folding). Norden, a Captain in the Danish Navy, made a journey in 1737-1738 through Egypt as far south as Sudan at the request of King Christian VI of Denmark. "After touring Alexandria and Cairo he proceeded up the Nile as far as Derr in Nubia, one night unknowingly passing Richard Pococke travelling in the opposite direction. Norden then retraced his steps to Alexandria and re-embarked for Europe in May 1738. During his year in Egypt, Norden produced the first coherent maps of the country . He died in Paris in September 1742, but his friends organized his papers on Egypt and published them in two volumes in French at Copenhagen in 1752-55" (Howgego). The present first English edition followed in 1757. He "was the first European to penetrate as far as Derr in Nubia and to publish descriptions of any Nubian temples. This important work was the earliest attempt at an elaborate description of Egypt, and its plates are the most significant previous to those by Denon" (Blackmer).

Jean - Thomas Hérissant, 1757. 2 volumes, 8vo, contemporary calf, gilt title on spine, XX, 310, (2 blank) pp. + (6), 333, (3: ads) pp. With 13 engraved plates. Some foxing, but a good copy.FIRST EDITION. "Bourdet's greatest contributions were to dental prosthetics. He also described severe periodontoclasia and his treatment of the condition - - similar to modern gingivectomy" (Garrison - Morton, 3673.1). "An excellent book on dentistry appeared in France in the year 1757, the work of Bourdet, a celebrated dentist and elegant writer, in whom the gifts of literacy and scientific culture were coupled with a vast experience and a profound spirit of observation. In many cases of caries, Bourdet extracted the tooth, fulled it with lead or gold leaf, and replanted it, but if, in extracting, the alveolus had been somewhat injured, he replanted the tooth immediately, to preserve the alveolus from the damaging action of the air, and carried out the stopping at a later time. Even in certain cases of violent toothache not depending on caries, Bourdet luxated the tooth and replaced it in position directly. Sometimes, when the permanent canine comes forth, it has not room enough, and therefore grows outward. In this case Bourdet extracts the first premolar, the canine then advances gradually of itself toward the space left by the extracted tooth, until it occupies its place exactly. He also counsels the extraction of the first premolar on the opposite side of the jaw, in order to preserve the perfect symmetry of the dental arch on both sides. When the arch formed by the jaws is too large and of an ugly appearance, Bourdet advises extracting the first upper and lower premolars, so that the maxillary arches may acquire a more regular form. In cases in which the defect of form exists only in the lower jaw, that is, in children who have protruding chins, Bourdet corrects this deformity by extracting the first lower molars shortly after their eruption. In this manner the lower jaw grows smaller and the deformity disappears. Bourdet made prosthetic pieces, whose base, representing the gums and the alveoli, was made entirely of gold and covered over with flesh - colored enamel on the outside, so as to simulate the natural appearance of the gums, the teeth were adjusted into the artificial alveoli and fixed with small pins. At other times he made use of a single piece of hippopotamus tusk, in which he carved not only the base, but also the three back teeth on each side, whilst the ten front teeth were human teeth fixed to the base with rivets. One of Bourdet's principal merits is that of having brought artificial plates to perfection by fixing them not, as heretofore, to the opening of the palate or inside the nose, but by means of lateral clasps fitted to the teeth" (V. Guerini, History of Dentistry, Amsterdam, 1967, pp. 309 - 10).Bourdet's work "covered much the same ground as did Fauchard. It is sometimes referred to as an abridgment of Fauchard, it is more than that, however. While he frequently refers to and quotes the latter's work, there is much in it that is original in thought and is an excellent and valuable addition to French dental literature. We must rank Etienne Bourdet with Fauchard in importance and influence" (Weinberger, History of Dentistry, Vol. I, p. 317)."Probably the most significant author after Fauchard. He frequently goes beyond his great model" (W. Hoffmann - Axthelm, History of Dentistry, Berlin - Chicago, 1981, p. 210).

1757. Coppia di incisioni all'acquaforte, bulino e puntasecca, 1757, firmate in basso a destra. "Pair of etchings, engraving and drypoint, 1757, signed in the lower right. Magnificent proofs, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""double encircled lily with the letters CB"", with wide margins, in excellent condition. Smaller versions of the original title page of Volume II and Volume III of Roman Antiquities. For the first time included in the ""Lettere di giustificazione scritte a Milord Charlemont e à di lui agenti di Roma ... intorno la dedica della sua opera delle Antichitá Rom[ane] fatta allo stesso signor ed ultimamente soppressa"" (1757) and subsequently included in some edition of ""opere Varie"" from about 1760. The essential element that characterized the nature of Piranesi was that certain taste for controversy that came to characterize the last thirty years of his life and at the same time gave lifeblood and was the basis of his brilliant creations. The weapon of choice for controversial ideas, however, was not the word, but the images, and trying to accuse, defend and argue through graphics gave rise to some of the most stunning works. Before polemical work were the letters of justification which included letters written to the Irish nobleman Lord Charlemont, who in addition to failing to keep his promise to fund Roman Antiquities, totally unaware of the protest letters sent to him by Piranesi. The text of the Letters of Justification, published in Rome in 1757, playing two of the letters in Charlemont, in addition to another addressed to Father Peter Grant, who had posed as a peacemaker in the dispute. The work summarizes the problems more serious than a simple argument, representing the changes that occur in the relationship between artists and patrons in the second half of the eighteenth century. The artist, with his work sought to leave an important mark on posterity by documenting the artifacts relating to the history of Rome, it was considered worthy of the respect of Lord Charlemont. Therefore this work of protest held to dissociate the name of the noble Irish Roman Antiquities for being such an unworthy patron, to the point that the Piranesi had already deleted from the title page of the first volume the words with which dedicated them to him. In this work the artist, along with some cartoons on account of Charlemont, reproduced in small size the four cover pages main contents in the main archaeological work. These small masterpieces, aroused much enthusiasm in the artist, who decided to insert plates in the new edition of ""Opere Varie"" published in the early sixties." Wilton Ely 746 & 747. 215 155

Internally only little browned, occasional minor spotting, a few pencil marginalia in vol. 5. A fine set, rarely found complete as here. ---- NLM/Blake p.195; Wellcome III, p.199; Conlon 57:829. FIRST FRENCH EDITION edited by Marquart of a collection of 163 inaugural theses and other medical tracts on surgery, partly presided by Haller in Göttingen. Haller's object was to illustrate a single disease, fatal cases where a post mortem had been made or where some trusty remedy had cured the patient. The in all 163 dissertations, ranging from 1666 to 1752, are presided over by Haller and such famous physicians as Lorenz Heister, Bernard Friedrich Albinus, Alexander Camerarius, Johann Sigismund Elsholtz, Jacob Benignus Winslow, Johann Adam Kulmus, and Friedrich Hoffmann. The collection is valuable as showing the subjects which interested surgeons during this period. They would have been lost to posterity if Haller had not preserved those which he considered to be the best either, as he says, on account of the full and accurate descriptions of disease, of new instruments invented or of unusual precautions adopted. Memoirs of wool, woolen manufacture, and trade,

Two vols., 4to., xxxi (5) 432 and 449 (1)pp., a little worm damage in blank upper margin of a few leaves in vol.II (nowhere near text), marginal dampstain in final few leaves also of vol.II, recently bound in Trevor Lloyd in fine old-style half calf, gilt and labelled. A very good copy. Best (fullest and most comprehensive) edition of a minor classic of industrial history. First published in two octavo volumes in 1747 as Chronicon Rusticum-Commerciale; or memoirs of wool, the author provides a masterly source-book for the subject. It has been universally praised: Williams (II, p.123) thought it "very valuable"; McCulloch described it as "one of the most carefully compiled and valuable works that has been published on the history of any branch of trade" (McC. p.237). Palgrave (1926, vol.III, p.425) is equally enthusiastic, calling the book "a highly valuable work ... a most careful and detailed account of the incidents and references relating to the woollen and cloth trade from the earliest mention of wool until the middle of the 18th century".

Anno Regni Georgii II. Regis Magnae Britaniae, Franciae, & Hiberniae, Tricesimo. At a General Assembly Begun and Holden at Charles-Town, on Tuesday the Twelfth Day of November . in the Year of Our Lord, 1754. And from thence Continued by Divers Prorogations and Adjournments to the 21st Day of May 1757

Printed by Peter Timothy, Charleston 1757 - 27pp. Expertly bound to style in period marbled paper wrappers. Provenance: Jacob Motte A very rare act of taxation in colonial South Carolina. The personal copy of Jacob Motte, with his signature on the titlepage. Motte was a plantation owner and political figure in colonial South Carolina, and also the public treasurer of the province at the time these laws were published. This copy has extensive marginalia and other notations throughout. These notations, calculations, and holographic notes and corrections are evidently by Motte, since a tax act of this kind would certainly have related to his work in the treasury. The official printer of South Carolina at this time, Peter Timothy, was the son of the proto-printer of the state, Lewis Timothy, and (as recorded in an article by Douglas C. McMurtrie) was a regular correspondent with Benjamin Franklin (who had helped his father establish the press). Gould and Morgan locate only the copy at the Library of Congress and the present copy of this rare imprint.         ACCOUNT OF THE EUROPEAN SETTLEMENTS IN AMERICA IN SIX PARTS IN TWO VOLUMES (2 Volumes)

London: R. and J. Dodsley, 1757. First Edition. Very Good binding. The first edition set of an important history of the European expansion into the New World, which Howes considered the "best contemporary account". Probably a married set, as Volume I has the ex-libris of "Wm. A. Phillips" of Salina, Kansas, while Volume II has the signature of the well-known South Carolina planter Peter Porcher. Each volume with an engraved folding map by Emanuel Brown, of South and North America. Volume I has lengthy notes about the book on the flyleaf, in an early hand. In period calf bindings, with double gilt fillets to the perimeter of the boards, raised bands and volume numbers stamped in gilt. Volume II has a morocco title label, lacking in Volume I. The boards of Volume I have been discreetly reattached. (Sabin 9282; Howes B974). Very Good binding.

Map of the Gulf of California has a 1¾ inch tear at the gutter margin, not affecting image. Internally clean and fresh. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase and chemise. The First Edition The very rare first edition of this classic history of California, frequently reprinted in various languages. Wagner states that the work "contains more on Lower California than almost any other book that had been published in one hundred and fifty years." Howes describes the work as the "first attempt at a history of California. Based, by the anonymous editor, Father Andres Marcos Burriel, on Venegas's 1739 ms., but incorporating information from other sources. Volume three of the original Spanish edition contains [an] account of discoveries on the Northwest coast attacking, as fictitious, the then accepted voyages of de Fonte and de Fuca." "Volume III contains extracts from Lopez de Gomara and Torquemada relating to the early explorations on the northwest coast and several articles written by Father Burriel himself. Of these the most interesting is his account of the construction of the map of California, and of the general map of North America. The extract from Torquemada relates to the Vizcaino expedition of 1602 and 1603 which Torquemada took from the diary of Father Antonio de la Ascension" - Zamorano 80.         Carte De La Louisiane…

[Paris]: 1757. Small engraved map, 30.5 x 22.4 cm (9 " x 12" excluding margins), uncolored, small decorative cartouche. Some aging and browning, some creases at folds, small tear in lower margin, impression bright and clean; very good or better. Bellin (1703-1772) born in Paris and according to Tooley was considered one of the most prominent cartographers of the 18th century in a career that lasted about 50 years. This is a colonial period map that was made after Delisle's map of the Mississippi and Louisiana. There is considerable detail, and the map shows the Louisiana Territory extending from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. The map also shows part of Northern Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and even part of Texas. Some Indian territories, including the Apaches are shown along with some European settlements.
