A Dictionary of the English Language

ondon- J. Knapton et al, 1756 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The first octavo and abridged edition of Johnson's Dictionary. With the variant 'By the Author' to volume I. This was originally omitted and added late in the printing (ESTC)Abstracted from the Folio Edition. Complete in two volumes. 'In which the words are deduced from their originals, explained in their different meanings, and authorised by the names of the writes in whose works they are found, to which is prefixed, a grammar of the English Language. 'Samuel Johnson, often referred to as Dr. Johnson, was an English writer, poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson's Dictionary was viewed as the pre-eminent British dictionary until the completion of the Oxford English Dictionary 150 years later. First printed in folio in 1755, the dictionary was reissued in the popular octavo edition in 1756. From the beginning there was a great appreciation for the work, and it was reviewed postively. Despite being critically well recieved, it did little to improve Johnson's financial situation at the time. Condition: In full calf bindings. Externally, a trifle rubbed with bumping to extremities. Spines repaired. Ink signatures to front free-endpapers. Endpapers repaired. Ink inscription to rearpastedown of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright withmarginal age toning andoccasional spots. Heavier spotting to first and last few pages with ink signature totitle page of volume II. Overall: VERY GOOD.

- originale, insolito Edition.

Holograph signature: "Oliver Goldsmith / Peckham" on a 1.25 x 2.75 inch piece of paper, matted and framed with a later (probably mid-19th century) oval portrait of Goldsmith

Paper soiled and ragged along edges, but the signature is clear and bold.. In late 1756 and 1757 Goldsmith was employed intermittently as an assistant schoolmaster at Peckham, in South London, where there was a school kept by a Dr. Milner, a dissenting minister. The present signature appears to be part of a leaf from a book acquired by Goldsmith during that brief interlude. Manuscript material of any sort in the hand of Oliver Goldsmith is very uncommon.

A remarkable and most attractive sammelband of eight French, Dutch, and Belgian art auction catalogues. All of them are rare. I. Jean Omer Joly de Fleury (1700-55), a member of a prominent and wealthy family, was an important collector of prints, drawings, books, scientific instruments, and natural history objects. We learn from Gabriel Martin's preface that, due to the collector's sudden death, the prints and drawings would be sold "as found" in portefeuilles and the large collection of specimens again, would be sold "as found," in the drawers. Nevertheless, the collection is quite well catalogued and we can gather an excellent idea of the contents. Dezallier d'Argenville described Joly's collection in 1755, calling it "famous." He illustrates some of the specimens. II. A fine sale of 847 lots of prints and 19 lots of books with plates. Very rare; no copy in OCLC. III. 116 lots. OCLC locates only one copy, at the BN. IV. A painter's collection of art. 443 lots including paintings, drawings, prints, and reliefs. Collin de Vermont (1693?-1761), was "a pupil of Rigaud and Jouvenet. He studied in Rome and entered the Académie in 1725. In 1727, he was one of the artists to work on decorations for the Apollo Gallery in the Louvre."-Benezit, III, p. 1244. OCLC locates only one copy, at the BN. V. 300 lots of paintings by Rubens, van Dyck, Breughel, Wouwermans, and Teniers. Very rare; no copy in OCLC. VI. Benjamin da Costa, a member of the prominent Anglo/Dutch Jewish family, formed a small but important collection of paintings. 90 lots. Very rare; no copy in OCLC. VII. Adrien Maurice, duc de Noailles (1678-1766), had a brilliant military career and served in the wars of Louis XV in Italy and Germany. He was appointed a marshal of the French Army in 1734. The duc de Noailles was also a fiscal advisor to Louis XV and unsuccessfully recommended financial prudence. This catalogue contains only 88 lots but we find paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian, Raphael, Carracci, Dürer, Breughel, Rembrandt, etc. OCLC locates only one copy, at the BN. VIII. One of the most important art sales in Holland of the period. 117 lots of paintings (Wouwerman, Ruysdael, and others), 172 lots of drawings, 227 lots of prints, 85 lots of illustrated books, 20 lots of instruments, 192 lots of medals, and 29 lots of "Diverses Raretés." Not in OCLC. Fine copies. ? I. Lugt 906. N.B.G., Vol. 26, col. 861. II. Lugt 1404. III. Lugt 1395. IV. Lugt 1181. V. Lugt 1006. VI. Lugt 1400. VII. Lugt 1654. VIII. Lugt 1528.

His two longest books, Natural History of the Corallines...and the posthumous Natural History of Zoophytes (1786, partly written by Solander), were seminal.         The scoundrel's dictionary, or an explanation of the cant words used by the thieves, house-breakers, street-robbers and pick-pockets about town. To which is prefixed, some curious dissertations on the art of wheedling; and a collection of their flash songs, with a proper glossary. The whole printed from a copy taken on one of their gang, in the late scuffle between the Watchmen and a party of them on Clerkenwell-Green; which copy is now in the custody of one of the constables of that parish

for J. Brownnell, London 1756 - First (and only) edition. 8vo, pp. 32; 19th century half red morocco, gilt-lettered spine, new blue cloth folding box with leather label. The Huth - Slater - Brett-Smith copy, with the Huth bookplate. Despite the romantic framing story provided on the title-page, the text is largely derived from Shirley's The Triumph of Wit (1688), and the cant entries in B.E.'s A New Dictionary of the Terms Ancient and Modern of the Canting Crew (1699). Perhaps the gang member was carrying one of these books, or was newly initiated and required a ready translation of his confederates jargon? The Scoundrel's Dictionary nevertheless has its own charms. A product of a time of rising crime, when criminals were often viewed as popular culture heroes, its rough-and-ready appearance and pocket size fit it for practical or street use while its studious predecessors would have been more likely to be consulted or encountered in a library. It was a source acknowledged by Grose and it's rare, with only a single copy appearing at auction (that one twice) since 1976. Alston IX, 322, "An abridged version of B.E.'s dictionary"; Burke, The Literature of Slang, p. 75, "Reprints the section devoted to canting and canting songs from The Triumph of Wit, 1688;" Coleman, A History of Cant and Slang Dictionaries I, pp. 68-69; not in the Cordell Collection; Kennedy 11895; no mention of the book in Partridge's Slang Today and Yesterday; Starnes and Noyes, The English Dictionary from Cawdrey to Johnson, 1604-1755, "This book, often called the rarest of the cant dictionaries because so many copies are thought to have been lost in a great fire, is .a reprint of Part III of The Triumph of Wit and hence another descendant of The Canting Academy. Whereas The Triumph of Wit was apparently intended for the diversion of the middle class, however, this dictionary seems to have had some contact with the beggars. At any rate it concludes with an unusual plea for charity to honest beggars." OCLC locates 7 copies (5 in the U.S., ESTC adds 1), plus the British Library copy for which the publisher is given as J. Brownell. This is the only work recorded from the publisher, whichever way it's spelt. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Catalogus Codicum Manuscriptorum qui in Bibliotheca Riccardiana Florentiae adservantur

in quo multa Opuscula anecdota in lucem passim proferuntur et plura ad Historiam litterariam locupletandam inlustrandamque idonea, antea ignota exhibentur Jo. Lamio. Engraved frontis., engraved vignette on title, & one engraved plate (reproducing specimens of handwriting). xxvi, [2], 436 pp. Folio, cont. vellum over boards. Liburni: A. Sanctini, 1756. The collections of early books, manuscripts, and works of art in the Biblioteca Riccardiana of Florence were begun in the 16th century by Riccardo Romolo Riccardi. In the last decades of the 17th century it was significantly enlarged by Francesco Riccardi, partially as a result of the dowry of his wife, Cassandra Capponi. Her father Vincenzio, an erudite and famous man of letters and science closely connected with the circle of Galileo, had left his daughter part of his extensive library of scientific and philosophical texts. The collections were housed in the magnificent palazzo in Via Larga (today Via Cavour), which was purchased from the Medicis in 1659, and is today known as the Palazzo Medici Riccardi. The Riccardi family was unusual in that they allowed the public to use the library throughout most of the 18th century. The present catalogue, prepared by Giovanni Lami (1697-1770), the famous librarian and antiquarian, describes about 3000 medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. This was one of the finest collections of early manuscripts in private hands at the time. It included many splendid illuminated and text manuscripts as well as autograph manuscripts by Petrarch, Boccaccio, Savonarola and of the greatest humanists including Alberti, Ficino, Poliziano and Pico della Mirandola. Fine copy. Bookplate A.R.A. Hobson. With a note on front paste-down endpaper: "Coll & perf: FCB. May. 1850." This was Francis Capper Brooke (1810-86). ? Nicolini 22.       Printed for Thomas Meighan, in Drury-Lane 1756 - B01MXM3WFV 1756 third edition, 'Printed for Thomas Meighan, in Drury-Lane' (London), 2 7/8 x 5 3/8 inches tall embossed blue leather bound, four raised bands and gilt lettering to spine, marbled endpapers and page edges, viii, [8], 272 pp. Moderate rubbing and edgewear to covers. Moderate foxing to title page and final page of text, with very slight occasional foxing elsewhere. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this rare early edition of the English Roman Catholic Challoner translation of the devotional classic The Imitation of Christ, with the translator named only by the initials 'R.C.,' given the restrictions on Catholic publishing then in effect in England. The English Short Title Catalog locates only five copies at institutions worldwide - three in England (Oxford University Bodleian Library, Kings College London and Cambridge University) and two in the U.S. (New York's General Theological Seminary and Harvard). ~KM3~ Richard Challoner (1691-1781) was an English Roman Catholic bishop, and a leading figure of English Catholicism during the greater part of the 18th century. He is perhaps most famous for his revision of the Douay Rheims translation of the Bible. Challoner's goal in his translations was to make the classics of Catholic Spirituality accessible to Catholics, in English. To this end he translated this work, 'De Imitatione Christi' (the Imitation, or Following, of Christ) in 1737. The Imitation of Christ was written (or at a minimum, transcribed) by Catholic monk Thomas Kempis (circa 1380-1471), as four separate books completed between 1420 and 1427, at Mount Saint Agnes monastery, in the town of Windesheim, located in what is now the Netherlands. He wrote these works for the instruction of novices of his Augustinian monastic order, followers of Geert Groote's Brethren of the Common Life. But the writings quickly became popular among all the literate faithful. They were copied together in one manuscript as early as 1427, by Kempis, and copied (and later printed) together fairly consistently thereafter. Soon after hand-copied versions of the Imitatio Christi initially appeared, the printing press was invented, and it was among the first books after the Bible to be printed. There is probably no other book other than the Bible which has been printed in so many editions and translations. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Florentiae [Florence], P. C. Viviani, 1756. 8vo (19.5 x 13.0 cm). 123 pp., two large, folded plates. Contemporary quarter calf over blind boards. Spine with gilt ornaments and brown morocco label with gilt title. Edges speckled red.= This is "a botanical treatise based on the Philosophia Botanica (1751), Genera Plantarum (1737), & Systema Naturae (1748). Very rare, especially with the plates. The British Library has a copy, but without the plates. Manetti's letter accompanying his presentation copy to Linnaeus is in the collections of the Linnean Society of London" (Soulsby, p. 11). Saverio, or Xavier, Manetti (1723-1785) was an Italian naturalist perhaps best known for his grand work on birds, "Storia naturale degli uccelli trattata con metodo eadornata di figure intagliate in rame e miniate al naturale". He was a good friend of Linnaeus, and is regarded as the editor of this work, rather than as the writer. Boards a bit rubbed, some light spotting, otherwise a very good copy. Cat.

Iniziali e cul-de-lamps ornati.

The illustrations depict biblical stories and allegorical representations of the Virgin’s life, the extra title is a fine interpretation of God appearing to Adam and Eve in the garden with the serpent, the engraver Westerhout has dedicated the work to Ferdinand, Prince of the Etruscans. The end-pieces generally show putti with allegorical emblems, one or two are metaphors of self-sacrifice (the pelican with her young). Well preserved. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Spine with gilt ornaments and brown morocco label with gilt title. He was a good friend of Linnaeus, and is regarded as the editor of this work, rather than as the writer. Boards a bit rubbed, some light spotting, otherwise a very good copy. Cat.         Icon synoptica sac. Rom. imp. electorum. ducum. principum.Augsburg, Tobias Conrad Lotter, [ca. 1756]. Large engraved chart (57 x 47) printed on a single sheet of paper (60 x 51), engraved by Emanuel Eichel after August Scheller, coloured by a contemporary hand.

Cf. Thieme & Becker XXX, pp. 20-21. Large chart listing dukes, princes and electors (members of the electoral college of the Holy Roman Empire) of the Holy Roman Empire, coloured by a contemporary hand, with in the center a large figure. The figure is dressed in the traditional costume of an elector, in which the names of the princes and dukes are written down. In the upper left and right corner are 9 coats of arms, representing important electors or noble families. Several of these charts were published together ca. 1756 as Icones synopticae monarchorum, reflecting the earlier series by Seuter (ca. 1740). After the production of ca. 1756, the charts were issued separately and occasionaly revised. Margins frayed and thumbed, upper left corner damaged, but otherwise in good condition.

Vna delle due Fornici di Stertinio nel Foro Boario

1756. Acquaforte e bulino, 1756. "Etching with engraving, 1756, signed on plate. From the first edition of 'Antichità Romane'. A magnific impression, printend on contemporary laid paper, with full margins, very good condition. The first edition was published in Rome in 1756 at the printing - works of Angelo Rotili at the Massimo alle Colonne Palace, by Bouchard and Gravier, book - dealers and tradesmen located in Rome near the church of St. Marcel at the Via del Corso. This collection included a portrait of Piranesi, engraved by Felice Polanzani, and a dedication to James Caulfield, count of Charlemont. This dedication was later abolished in the aftermath of a quarrel, described by Piranesi in his Lettere di Giustificazione [Letters of Justification] (1757), which also gave rise to three different versions of this first original edition (May 1756). These different versions are distinguishable from the title - page of the first volume, which initially was dedicated to the Irish aristocrat, then exhibited a cancelled dedication and coat of arms and, finally, bore a Latin motto written by the artist ""Aevo Suo Posteri set Utilitari Publicae""."         A Dictionary of the English Language: In Which the Words are Deduced from Their Originals, explained in Their Different Meanigns, and Authorized By the Names of the writers in Whose Works They are Found (2 volumes)

London: Printed for J. Knapton et al., 1756. Octavo in 4s. Two volume set of the Second Edition. First octavo edition. In this edition, the quotations are omitted, definitions contracted, and many words left out. There are two issues: after publication it was realized that the words "by the author" on the title page were left out. Consequently, the words were added late in the printing and make this variant rare and desirable. [See ESTC N54790]. This edition was sold as "Everyman's Dictionary" and printed in an edition of 5,000 copies (as was the first folio edition). The lexicon text is in double column. The preface in this edition is remarkable both in its appeal to those he addresses as "the common reader". It might be well assumed that the author could only do this in a society where those outside the aristocratic tradition were accepting of what in our world would be an offensive put down. It was not entirely superseded until the Oxford English Dictionary was completed in 1926. Bound in contemporary full gilt-ruled calf, in very good condition with minor restoration to spine ends. The title page of Volume I has a small hole between "The" and "English" where the name of the original owner "Adair" had been excised. (it is still in place in volume I). Damp staining on endpapers and head of title page of Volume I and a small cut out on endpaper (name?). A very good set with no other major defects.
