The case of marriages between near kindred particularly considered, with respect to the doctrine of scripture, the law of nature, and the laws of England. With some observations relating to the late Act to prevent Clandestine Marriages>.

London: J. Whiston and B. White. MDCCLVI 1756 - 8vo., xix + (1) + 146pp., tiny perforations in a couple of leaves affecting partially two or three letters on both recto and verso of G4 and with loss of two or three letters on both recto and verso of H6, sense unimpaired, well bound fairly recently in calf-backed marbled boards, spine gilt with raised bands and label. A very good, crisp, copy in spite of the very minor faults. First edition. The Marriage Act> of 1753, or An Act for the better preventing of clandestine marriage,> popularly known as Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act> (26 Geo.II.C.33) was the first statutory legislation in England and Wales to require a formal ceremony of marriage. It came into force on 25 March 1754. The Act had been precipitated by a dispute about the validity of a Scottish marriage, although pressure to address the problem of clandestine marriage had been growing for some time. Fry records that 'the ensuing treatise was written a considerable time since, and the greatest part of it printed off last winter, though not published till now.'

GOTTLIEB MITTELBERGERS REISE NACH PENNSYLVANIEN IM JAHR 1750. UND RUKREISE NACH DEUTSCHLAND IM JAHR 1754...

Frankfurt, 1756. [8],120pp. Bound to style in antique half calf and marbled boards. Very good. A mid-18th century account of German colonists in Pennsylvania by compatriot and traveller Gottlieb Mittelberger, reprinted in Frankfurt from the initial Stuttgart edition of the same year. Mittelberger's narrative is highly valuable for its firsthand information on the state of colonial Pennsylvania just prior to the French and Indian War. In particular, he gives many details of religious and cultural practices, social customs, societal structure, aspects of trade and agriculture, prevalent illnesses, and Indian relations, and also provides a detailed and lengthy description of the hardships of the transatlantic journey. The work is also notable for its frank appraisal of sexual behavior in Pennsylvania, and its denunciation of indentured servitude. Mittelberger travelled to Philadelphia from Heilbronn in 1750, and became a music and German teacher, before he returned in 1754, disappointed by his experiences. Indeed, his account is intended as warning to Germans not to immigrate to the colonies. Not only was the voyage a miserable one, according to the author, but the German immigrants were at great risk of being exploited in indentured servitude, which was often the price of passage, and being put to work in horrific conditions. Beyond this danger, Mittelberger reports on a widespread lack of religious belief and a prevalence of loose morals that he finds to be overwhelming. A fascinating though highly critical report on Pennsylvania in the early 1750s. HOWES M705, "aa." SABIN 49761 (ref).

One full-page woodcut on p. 105. 112 pp. Small 8vo, 19th-cent. half-sheep & marbled boards, spine gilt. Schneeberg: C.W. Fulden, 1756. First edition of the earliest bibliography of earthquakes and seismology; it is unknown to Besterman and Petzholdt and WorldCat locates no copy in North America. Grundig (1707-80), was a Protestant theologian, natural historian, and author of a number of works on natural history. He studied under Henckel at the Freiberg gymnasium who awakened his interest in mineralogy. Grundig was also the editor of several journals devoted to natural history and one of the founders of the famous mining school at Freiberg. He formed a large library and natural history collection (see Wilson, The History of Mineral Collecting 1530-1799, p. 173). Grundig wrote this work as a result of the dramatic Lisbon earthquake of 1755. He lists in alphabetical order the earlier published writings on earthquakes, gives a biographical sketch of the authors, and describes the contents of each work. Fine copy. ❧ Poggendorff, I, 965.

Frontespizio in rosso e in nero. Antiporta incisa su rame e finemente acquerellata, 39 tavv. incise su rame f.t. in fine coloritura acquerellata, alcune delle quali ripiegate. Dedicatoria alla Regina di Svezia. Qualche arrossatura. Timbro di privata biblioteca. Buon esemplare. Prima edizione francese di An Essay towards a Natural History of the Corallines and other Marine Productions found on the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland, trattato naturalistico sui coralli (un système d'une nouvelle classe d'êtres jusqu'à présent inconnus) della Gran Bretagna e dell'Irlanda, autentico classico nella storia della biologia marina e una delle principali opere del grande naturalista britannico (in Irlanda, 1710-Londra, 1776). Ellis's zoophyte descriptions and professionally drawn engravings, and his scientific approach, were outstanding. His two longest books, Natural History of the Corallines?and the posthumous Natural History of Zoophytes (1786, partly written by Solander), were seminal. In the 1750s he was one of the British Museum's first noteworthy scientific visitors. He became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1754 and was its Copley medallist in 1767. (ODNB). Nissen, BBI, 590.         CARTE DES ISLES MAIORQUE MINORQUE ET YVICE Balearic Island Map, Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza

Dépôt de la Marine c 1756 - 420mm x 580mm. Original hand-coloured copper engraved map. Large decorated cartouche to the top left, and two inset maps to the bottom right, one a plan of the port and battlements at Mahon, the other of the Western Mediterranean as a whole. A fine copy, with the central crease as usual. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a French hydrographic engineer who first joined the Dépôt de la Marine, the institution founded in 1720 to draw and amend the maps used by the navy, at the age of eighteen. He first drew the map from which this copy is engraved in 1740, shortly after his promotion to Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine, a promotion which gave him the monopoly in the printing and trade of navy maps. This plan with the Port of Mahon correctly orientated is likely to be drawn after the capture of Minorca by the French navy following the Siege of Fort S. Phillipe (depicted on the South bank of the plan). The map of the Balearics as a whole was one of only twenty-six maps Bellin had bound up and sent to the Royal Society of London in 1752, as part of his candidacy file for election to the scientific society.         CZECH REPUBLIC / FREDERICK THE GREAT – BATTLE OF LOBOSITZ / LOVOSICE BROADSIDE: DEUTLICHE ABBILDUNG UND BESCHREIBUNG VON DER GROSSEN UND HITZIGEN SCHLACHT BEY LOWOSITZ IN BÖHMEN, DEN 1. OCTOBR. 1756.

Broadside: copper engraving and letterpress (Very Good, on a full untrimmed sheet, old remains of guards on verso where once mounted in composite volume of broadsides, old folds, a few tiny holes at fold vertices), 42 x 34.5 cm (16.5 x13.5 inches). - [Germany, 1756]. A rare pictorial broadside featuring the Battle of Lobositz / Lovosice (1756), Bohemia, fought between Frederick the Great’s Prussians and Count von Browne’s Austrian forces, the first major European land battle of the Seven Years’ War. - This rare and fascinating broadside showcases the Battle of Lobositz / Lovosice, Bohemia, fought on October 1, 1756, which has the distinction of being the first major European land battle of the Seven Years’ War (1756-63). During this complicated, global conflict, King Frederick the Great’s Prussia was aligned with Britain and various lesser allies against an alliance of Empress Maria Theresa’s Austrian Habsburg Empire, Saxony, France and various other powers. Frederick II "The Great" of Prussia (ruled 1740-86), having bettered his adversaries in previous conflicts and having trained his army to near perfection, was determined to open the Seven Years’ War with on an aggressive posture. He essentially ran his army straight through Saxony, determined to take the fight directly to his arch-nemesis Austria, by invading Habsburg Bohemia. This was a daring move as it ensured that Frederick would be outnumbered at an ‘away game,’ and it was done against the ardent advice of his British allies. The town of Lobositz (Lovosice) occupied a strategic position, as the natural northwestern gateway to Bohemia, sitting on the banks of the Elbe River, just as the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) descended towards the Bohemian Lowlands. However, the Austrian army was prepared, as they were already encamped at Budin, just to the southeast of Lovosice. Saxon spies had alerted its commander, Field Marshall Count Maximilian Ulysses Count von Browne, that Frederick intended to descend into the Bohemian Lowlands at Lovosice. Browne knew that failure to stop Frederick there would likely mean that Prussia would be able to seize Prague, which was a relatively easy 3-4 day march beyond. On September 28, 1756, Browne marshaled all of his forces in the region, totaling 33,000 men, and moved to Lovosice to ambush Frederick’s force of 28,000 strong. They took up their positions along the slopes of an extinct volcano and waited. The morning of October 1, 1756 was thick with fog as Frederick’s army approached Lovosice, completely unaware of Browne’s design. At first, Frederick’s advance guard skirmished with what appeared to be a small Habsburg force, attacking them under the assumption that they could be easily overcome. However, this lured the Prussians further into a spatial trap, deeper into the valley. The Prussian General Gessler, without informing Frederick, ordered a full-scale cavalry charge upon the Austrian positions. A shocked Frederick exclaimed "My God, what is my cavalry doing! They're attacking a second time, and nobody gave the order!". The Prussians were promptly mauled by the Austrian artillery. By this point they were aware of the sheer magnitude of the trap they entered, with Frederick realizing that the battle was lost. The only hope was to escape without any further losses, with the Prussian officers remarking "These are no longer the same old Austrians" (like the ones that they had throttled in previous battles). Fortunately for Frederick, Browne was unwilling to chance the decimation of this own army, and so after the fighting halted upon nightfall, he decided to withdraw his army to Budin. Browne’s withdrawal allowed Frederick to save face by calling what was a strategic defeat a technical victory. Frederick was compelled to scrap his planned invasion of Bohemia, so granting the Austrians their strategic objective. The onset of winter would place the war in the region on hold, however, great drama was to unfold in the 1757 season. News of the Battle of Lobositz / Lovosice spread all across Europe, as people clamoured to learn details of one of the year’s two great European military events (the other being the Siege of Minorca). The present broadside is one of the most attractive and inte

Patent of nobility donated by Maximilian Joseph, Maximilian I, King of Bavaria (1756-1825) to Peter Anton Kreusser (1765-1831 or 1832), composer, becoming Freiherr.

Patent of nobility donated by Maximilian Joseph, Maximilian I, King of Bavaria (1756-1825) to Peter Anton Kreusser (1765-1831 or 1832), composer, becoming Freiherr. Bavaria, Munich, d.d. 27 August 1823. Folio. No covers, only paper endpapers. 370 x 280 mm. (8) pages on vellum. Manuscript, calligraphic text with printed decorative margins. One immaculate hand painted coat-of-arms (signed: J. Georg Portner) in colour and gold. At the end the signature of king Maximilian Joseph. Other signatures: Graf von Richburg, P.J. von Baumüller. Peter Anton Kreusser was a German composer. Claiming to be of Swabian aristocrat stock he was born in Lengfurt (today Triefenstein). He began the Anglo-Bavarian branch to the Kreusser [Kreußer] family when he married Anne Rickets in London. Peter was the younger cousin of the composer George Anton Kreusser (1743-1802), who was a friend and collaborator of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and who moved to Paris. Peter moved there as well, where he served as a violinist. The French Revolution brought him to London, where his career as a composer began. During his time in London he lived at 44 Greek Street. He formed a close association with the Wornum family that extended over two generations and resulted in the Sickert family coming to live in England. In 1823 he returned to Munich. He died in Munich during a cholera. He wrote many romantic airs, divertimenti, sonatas and dances for the piano forte. Much of his work was dedicated to friends and associates, amongst them were Emily Huskisson, wife of William Huskisson. His Six Waltzes for the Piano Forte… (Op. 12), was published in London in 1810. Sixteen published compositions or arrangements by him are listed in the British Library Catalogue. Kreusser's daughter by Elizabeth Landry, Emillia, married the Italian Count Londron. Kreusser's son Franz had several children with interesting connections: his daughter Blanche (1839-1918) was lady-in-waiting to Queen Marie of Bavaria. H138

        Le Antichità Romane.

Rome Nella Stamperia di Angelo Rotili nel Palazzo de' Massimi Bouchard & Gavier 1756 - Four volumes folio (53 x 40.5 cm). Vol. I: pp. iv ('Prefazione' and 'Imprimatur' leaf dated '25 Gennaro 1756' with list of Piranesi's publications verso), pp.(iv) Avviso al publico. 25 Augusto 1756. pp.(ii) Milord. Febbraio 1757.pp.40, pp. xi ('Spiegazione' and 'Osservazioni'), pp.iii ('Indice, O Sia Spiegazione'), pp.iv ('Indice'), pp.iii ('Indice'), pp.(ii) ('Repertorio'). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Piranesi by Polanzani, printed title, engraved double-page dedication plate with text 'Utilitati Publicae' (second state after the removal of 'Lord Charlemont'), Piranesi's text and 44 engraved plates plus 1 map, of which 5 are double-page, 1 large folding plate on two sheets, 2 folding plates on 1 sheet and 30 single page plates with two images; Vol. II: engraved title, engraved double-page frontispiece and engraved list of subjects and 60 engraved plates, numbered I - LXIII (including title, frontispiece and list of subjects), of which 44 are double-page and one large double-page folding plate on 2 sheets; Vol. III: engraved title and engraved double-page frontispiece and 52 plates, numbered I - LIV (including title and frontispiece), of which 42 are double-page and one large double-page folding plate on 2 sheets (four plates are by Girolamo Rossi and one by an anonymous artist); Vol. IV: engraved title, engraved double-page frontispiece and engraved list of subjects and 57 plates. Sheet size (double-page): c.725 x 520 mm (or the reverse). Watermarks examined include the shiled with sword and fleur-de-lys (Robison 61), a fleur-de-lys with initials (Robison 20 / 21), a fleur-de-lys within a single circle (Robison 18 / 19) however the majority of those present appear to be the fleur-de-lys within a double circle (Robison 33 / 35). Full contemporary polished calf, rebacked, boards with triple-ruled borders and floral corner pieces in gilt, banded spines with gilt tooling and black leather label with gilt title in nine compartments, turn-ins tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. Repairs to edges and corners. An excellent example. Piranesi's most important work: more than 200 plates in a very early state. With Ducal provenance. This work, which required eight years of careful study and excavation by Piranesi, established his reputation as the leading protagonist of Roman archaeology when it first appeared in 1756. His aim, as with all his archeological publications, was both to record the vanishing past for scholars and to inspire contemporary designers to emulate the achievements of ancient Rome. Volume I explains the urban structure of ancient Rome in terms of its walls, defences and aqueducts as well as its public monuments. Volumes II - III include the plans of the Camera Sepolcrali, and are devoted to the extensive remains of sepulchres around Rome. Volume IV concentrates on the heroic feats of Roman engineering in the form of bridges and monumental structures such as the Curia Hostilia, the substructure of the Temple of Claudius, Hadrian's mausoleum (the Castel Sant'Angelo), and the Theatre of Marcellus. As John Wilton-Ely notes, the work includes plates by or after other artists, chiefly in volumes II and III. 'The double-page engraved titles of volumes 2 and 3 of Piranesi's Le Antichità Romane display the artist as the most visionary of classical archaeologists. Imaginative and fascinating in all their myriad detail, these two 'restored' views of the great Roman Appian Way have all the overwhelming effect of the modern canyons of New York City, but embellished with classical finials and endless ornament'. (Princeton University, In Search of Art: The English Grand Tour exhibition). 'After two hundred years, the work still remains the vastest picture book of buildings and antiquities in Rome. Almost half the plates record things that have since vanished or been further damaged. It is the first book that attempted to reassemble objects that had been found and then scattered. The big plate of the Roman water system [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Tradesmans Director or

London - W Owen, 1756 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. A scarce eighteenth century book . Containing such instructions as will enable the shop-keeper to carry on his business with more ease and greater exactness than is usually done. Gives a good overview of the world of business and commerce in London in the 18th century. With additional page numbered *45 and 46* has been inserted between p 44 and 45. Though not the first of it's kind, this scarce pocket sized work provides a complete overview of various aspects of trade and book-keeping. Manuals of this kind had begun to appear since the late 17th century, and were usually aimed at a broad audience, in particular towards 'Gentleman'. Previously volumes sought, by claiming to appeal to all classes, to increase readership, as it was supposed that all could benefit from an understanding of book keeping, weights and measures, from Lord to apprentice. By contrast, this work aims itself squarely at a trade audience, and as stated in the preface, 'in the plainest language. . . nothing introudced without being explained in an easy and familiar method: Most of the books of this sort were either superior to common capacities and ordinary dealings, or hand introduced such loads of rubbish as were fitted more to increase the difficulty than to make this sort of knowledge useful and agreeable. ' Furthermore, this volume was released as a handy pocket-sized work, rather than more awkward octavos or folios that had more oftencome before. Complete collation unavailable, although appears to be complete. Condition: Rebound in quarter calf with marbled boards. Externally smart. Internally firmly bound. Pages are clean throughout with the occasional ink annotation. Imprint exised at foot of title page with loss of publication date, new front and rear endpapers, some pages toned and light spotting throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

ANDREA BONDUCCI, 1756.

Exceptional Mexican Colonial Catalogue of the Jesuits Fathers working in the Viceroyalty of New Spain (current Mexico and southern United States), a virtual who´s who of the Jesuit Order in the Viceroyalty; each entry begins with the name, county of origin (or region, most are Mexican-born, also from Guatemala), date of birth, date of entry to the Order and date of taking of habits. The catalogue is a unique insight to the human composition of the widespread Order, which only decades before had some of it´s members disproving the insularity of California, and making the first settlements in the region. The making of such catalogues of the members of the Order was by no means new, and several had been published in Mexico, all in Latin, however this is the only one in Spanish we have found; an earlier one, published in Mexico in 1751 "Catalogus Personarum, & Domiciliorum... Societas Jesu Mexicana", compiled by Juan Antonio Balthazar and Peter Zespedes, can possibly have served as foundation to this one. The printed edition is very rare, with three copies showing up in Wordlcat, none in the United States. This Spanish translation would appear to be unique. Several biographies, menologies, and chronics of the deeds and progresses of the Order´s activities in the Viceroyalty were published in the 17th and 18th centuries, however, at least to our knowledge, nothing of these characteristics in Spanish. Manuscript on paper, title illustrated within frame, clear handwriting, perfectly legible. Extremely rare, we were not able to trace any copies of this text in institutions. Provenance: bought from Adalberto Walther Meade, professor, historian and collector. Fr. Astrain, "History of the Society of Jesus in the Old Spanish Assistance". Gonzalez de Cossio "Ensayo Bibliografico de los Catalogos de Sujetos de la Compañia de Jesus en Nueva España".

Bound in 1765 (see below) in mottled calf, comb-marbled endleaves (rebacked, original spine label preserved, the other panels tooled in gilt to style; inside joints strengthened with cloth; corners worn; the surface of the leather affected by the mottling acid and a little scuffed). The frontispiece designed by Samuel Wale and engraved by H. Roberts depicting "The Genius of Health receiving the tributes of Europe Asia Africa and America and delivering them to the British Reader" has been carefully hand-coloured (though with some oxidisation on the faces) and the name of artist ("S. Wale delin.") carefully scratched-out and that of the colourist "St George Molesworth pinxit" added by hand. The Rev. St George Molesworth (1731-1796), grandson of the 1st Viscount Molesworth, was the absentee vicar of Northfleet, Kent (presented Feb. 1763) and d. at Hamburg. The vignette on the title designed by Wale and engraved by Charles Grignion depicting "Aesculapius and Flora gathering from the Lap of Nature, Health and Pleasure" has also been carefully hand-coloured and there is a tiny ink cypher "[?E]B pinxt." opf the colourist added beneath. Neat manuscript ink note on the title beneath the imprint "Finished and bound in ye year MDCCLXV" [the date cut from the imprint of a book]. The engraved coat-of-arms of the dedicatee, the Earl of Northumberland, has also been hand-coloured. London: for T. Osborne and J. Shipton; J. Hodges; J. Newbery; B. Collins; and H. Crowder and H. Woodgate,

KLASSIKER DER GEBURTSHILFE. MOST CELEBRATED MIDWIFE OF THE 17th CENTURYJustine Siegemundin (1651-1705) vollst. Rare edition of this classic in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Justine Siegemundin was the most celebrated German midwife of the 17th century. In 1672 she obtained a copy of De Graff's book of generation, which started her on her career as a really scientific midwife. Basically self-taught she developed her skills to the degree that she was made Court Midwife by Frederic III and the royal family of Prussia. The book, a result of her own experience, is of major interest and importance for its original obstetrical illustrations not copied from Roesslin or Rueff. The fact that the work was written in German instead of Latin aroused a great deal of criticism. The major portion of the book consists of a dialogue between Justine and her pupil Christina. Generously illustrated with instructive copperplates, the "Siegemundin" had a great influence and new editions appeared up to 1756.cf. Garrison & Morton 6149 (1st. BedfordA Historical Survey of the Clinical Picture of Plethora Vera - "The first modern to approach the problem was Albrecht von Haller4 (1730), a Swiss scientist and one of the most important men of the eighteenth century. He wrote that "a plethoric or sanguine habit arises from an abundance of the red cells. . . . Nor can life or health subsist without a sufficiency of thinner juices intermixed with the red blood seeing the cruor deprived of its watery part, congeals and obstructs the smallest passages of the vessels, and kindles too great a heat." Would it be a misinterpretation to consider this statement as the first recognition of the condition in which thrombosis with gangrene occurs in the course of polycythemia? Haller was one of the first physicians who understood the value of blood examinations, and he confessed that he "could not perform a sufficient number of microscopic experiments on the red cells, which appeared very dense and convex." "His keen observations and recommendations were rapidly forgotten. Even a century later, microscopic examinations were not recognized in medicine. " Camille Dreyfus, Some Milestones in the History of Hematology, pp.1,11,12,27,63-64Haller's most important work was on the physiology of the blood vessels and of the nervous system, a subject to which the present volume makes an important contribution. ... His conclusion, that the capillaries are without contractility, became a foundation of medical science and practice for nearly two centuries. - cf.
