Woodcut device on title & 17 folding engraved plates. 6 p.l., 570, xxii pp. Large 4to, cont. mottled sheep (a few minor scuff marks), spine nicely gilt, contrasting vellum lettering piece on spine. Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1754. Third edition, greatly enlarged, of the first exhaustive treatise on the aurora borealis. Mairan attributed the phenomenon to an extension of the sun's atmosphere, which at times enveloped the earth and blended with our atmosphere. "Inquiry into the history and physics of the aurora borealis; the chapter on the relation between the aurora and the magnetic declination is of special interest."-Wheeler Gift Cat. 382. There are many references to Descartes, Newton, Cassini, and Euler. Mairan (1678-1771), while basically a Cartesian, did incorporate some Newtonian ideas in his theories. He was secretary of the Paris Academy of Sciences and belonged to the Royal Societies of London, Edinburgh, and Uppsala, the St. Petersburg Academy, and the Institute of Bologna. Unusually fine copy. Bookplate of Pierre Sciclounoff, the prominent Geneva lawyer and book collector. ❧ D.S.B., IX, pp. 33-34. See E. Newton Harvey's A History of Luminescence, pp. 258-59 for an excellent discussion. .

Quérard III, 168; Reusch "Forster, (Johann) Georg(e) (Adam) 1754-1794", in: Encyclopedia of the Romantic Era, 1760-1850, pp. 365-366; cf. Uhlig, Georg Forster, pp. 261-270. Second French edition of what is considered Forster's major work, Ansichten vom Niederrhein. Forster's fame was instantly established when he published an impressive account of James Cook's second voyage around the world in 1778-1780. The present work details Forster's travels with Alexander von Humboldt to France, Germany and the Netherlands, intertwined with observations on politics, history, nature, and the arts and sciences. Fusing Enlightenment with early Romanticism, it "consolidated Forster's reputation as the master of subjective 'artistic' observation and description, which had a profound impact on the travel writing and landscape painting of the era" (Reusch). The third volume contains observations on Britain and British culture. The illustrations include a large map of Great Britain and 9 beautiful folding views, showing Westminster Cathedral, Windsor castle, St. Paul's, the House of the Lord Major of London, the London Stock exchange, Covent garden, the Hospital at Chelsea and at Greenwich and Hampton Court. Some browning, the bindings show some wear, otherwise in very good condition and attractively bound..

Cma per le lingue Italiana e Spagnola. / In Amsterdamo (Amsterdam = Paris) / a Spese dellEditore To.Po. / M. DCC. LIV [1754].

Amsterdam/Paris, a Spese dell\' Editore T.°P.°, 1754. 8°, Ledereinband Lucretius in Italian, Della Natura Delle Cose, printed at Paris [although the title states Amsterdam in all copies] in two octavo volumes in 1754 on thick Holland paper with wide margins, adorned with 2 full-page engraved frontispieces and 2 engraved titles by Lemire after Eisen, 6 engraved plates after Cochin and Le Lorrain, 7 headpieces after Cochin and Eisen and 5 tailpieces after Cochin, Eisen and Vasse, both volumes bound by Riviere and Son in 19th century brown morocco with very ornate and richly gilt spines, gilt-paneled boards with floral designs, gilt turn-ins and gilt edges, complete in all respects, and housed in a brown cloth and felt-lined slipcase. This remarkable set may be referenced as Brunet III at 1222, Cohen-de-Ricci at 665-66, and Ray at 9. / THE FAMOUS ILLUSTRATED LUCRETIUS OF 1754, ONE OF THE FINEST ILLUSTRATED PUBLICATIONS OF THE 18TH CENTURY AND, ACCORDING TO RAY, THE MODEL FOR THE SUMPTUOUS ROCOCCO VOLUMES OF THE 25 YEARS FOLLOWING ITS PUBLICATION. ILLUSTRATED WITH NUMEROUS PLATES AFTER THIS SET IS BEAUTIFULLY BOUND BY RIVIERE AND SON IN RICHLY GILT 19TH CENTURY BROWN MOROCCO. The full title reads as follows: Di Tito Lucrezio / Della Natura Delle Cose / Libri Sei / Tradotti dalLatino in Italian / Da Alessandro Marchetti. / In Amsterdamo / a Spese dell / Editore To.Po. / M. DCC. LIV [1754]. According to Ray, this book became the model for the sumptuous rococo volumes of the ensuing twenty-five years. Handsomely printed on large paper with headpieces, and tailpieces by leading artists, it is encountered more often in contemporary bindings of decorated morocco ... than almost any other work of the time. Cohen-de-Ricci states that the illustrations in this book are extremely beautiful (fort belles). The text is a translation into Italian by Alessandro Marchetti. Again, the engravings in the two volumes are as follows: 2 full-page engraved frontispieces by Eisen after paintings by Lemire; 2 titles-pages engraved by Eisen after Lemire; 6 full-page plates after Cochin and Le Lorrain, engraved by Aliamet, Lemire, Sornique and Tardieu; 7 headpieces after Cochin and Eisen, engraved by Bacquoy, Chenu, Flipart, Gallimard, Lemire and Sornique; and 5 tailpieces after Cochin, Eisen and Vasse, engraved by Aliamet, Bacquoy, Gallimard and Louise. Lucretius is known to have lived about 44 years, from about 99 BC to about 55 BC. According to the poets own statements concerning De Rerum Natura, the works purpose was to free the mind of superstition and the fear of death. He attempts this by expounding the philosophical system of Epicurus, whom Lucretius apotheosizes as the hero of his epic poem. De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things) transmits the ideas of Epicurean physics, including Atomism, and psychology. Lucretius compares his work in De Rerum Natura (here in the Italian Della Natura Delle Cose) to that of a doctor healing a child: just as the doctor may put honey on the rim of a cup containing bitter wormwood, believed to have healing properties, the patient is tricked into accepting something beneficial but difficult to swallow, but not deceived by the doctor (Book IV lines 12-19). Stylistically, De Rerum Natura is of the first significance to the naturalisation of Greek philosophical ideas and discourse within the Latin language; Lucretius poem exercised a profound influence on Virgil and other later poets. Cochin must be considered the primary artist whose work is displayed Versand D: 5,00 EUR Bibliophile Ausgabe, Illustrierte Ausgabe, Englische Meistereinbände

To George Wakeman Esq, Consul for his Majesty the King of Great Britain, in the Island of Cyprus. This Map of the Island of Cyprus, is Dedicated by his Friend & Servant A. Drummond

London, Willamam Strahan,, 1754 - Stylianou, A. & J.: The History of the Cartography of Cyprus, No. 177 (fig. 167); Zacharakis 950; Ioannou Collection 76; Bank of Cyprus 53; Papavassilis 95; Navari 129. Drummonds Karte wurde im Jahre 1754 in seinem Reisebericht 'Travels through different cities of Germany, Italy, Greece and several parts of Asia' veröffentlicht. Hervorragende Erhaltung. Alte Faltspuren, da in einem etwas kleineren Buchformat veröffentlicht. - Drummond's map of Cyprus A very large and rare map of Cypus. This detailed map is based on the personal survey of Alexander Drummond during the year 1745. Drummond's map was published in 1754 within his travel report 'Travels through different cities of Germany, Italy, Greece and several parts of Asia'. Drummond has been travelled to Cyprus twice, first in 1745, where he stayed at the house of the British consul George Wakeman in Larnaca, to whom the present map is dedicated. He has tried to correct the mistakes of previous cartographers. Nevertheless Navari mentioned: 'The shape of the map is only marginally better than that of Pococke. Nonetheless, (it) is one of very few produced from personal observations during the Turkish occupation of Cyprus'. Stylianou notes to this map: 'In Cyprus, he was the guest of the British Consul in Larnaca to whom he dedicated the map of Cyprus he compiled during his travels in the island: To George Wakeman Esq.r, Consul for his Magesty the King of Great Britain, in the Island of Cyprus, This Map of the Island of Cyprus is Dedicated by his Friend & Servant A. Dru(m)mond. In the bottom right corner, outside the frame of the map, we have the signature of the engraver: J. S. M. Sculp. [J. S. Müller] Drummond went round the island following almost the same route as Pococke, but he did it the other way round, i.e. clock-wise. He also went across the island from Larneca to Nicosia. He also penetrated as far as the Monastery of Kykko which he marks as Madonna di Chekka. From his writings, it appears that he also had in mind old geographers and cartographers, whom he constantly tries to correct according to his geographical system as he expressly states, often with disastrous results. For example, in his account he remarks, Couclia I substitute in the place of Arsinoe upon the ancient charts and on his map he enters it as Covelia olim Cythera. Having done this, he then proceeds to fix old Paphos at the port of Baffo in his text, as well as on the map, as Paphos Antiqua. Paphos Nova in his text is entered as Baffo on his map, in the position of modern Ktima. In this way he is inferior to Pococke. The shape of the map is an advance on that of Pococke, but a retrogression as compared with the maps in the line of development of Iacomo Franco, Ortelius, Blaeu, Janssonius, Coronelli, although Drummond himself does not think so. From what he writes, he considers himself a better geographer and cartographer than his predecessors. As in the positioning of the places, so in the features of the island, he is constantly trying to correct them. Althou

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

Il Roccolo. Ditirambo di Aureliano Acanti acc. Olimpico Vicentino

Venice: Nella Stamperia Pezzana, 1754. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. Small 4to. (265 x 200 mm). Contemporary Italian mottled boards (repaired, possibly recased). Engraved title-vignette (a putto on a barrel of wine), engraved headpiece (Bacchus beneath a garland) and tailpiece (Bacchus inebriated), and a large and spectacular folding plate (480 x 350) depicting the villa and gardens of Novoledo belonging to Conte Gelio Ghellini, all by Domenico Cunego. The first guide to the wines of Vicenza, and one of the most important books in the history of Italian wine. Disguised as a poem in dithyrambic meter (commonly associated with the cult of Dionysus), this ironic work is at the same the most significant early account of the wines of the Veneto. Herein we find the earliest evidence of the cultivation of Prosecco in Veneto (see p. 29), specifically the "melaromatico Prosecco" produced by Count Gelio Ghellini (the dedicatee of this volume) at his estate near Monte Berico. While effectively a parody of an ancient Dionysian poem, these verses serve as a pretext for discussing and rating more than thirty wines in the Vicenza region, with passionate descriptions of the flavor, color, and clarity of particular wines, and the palatial estates from which they originate. "Il Roccolo" is a document of extraordinary testimonial value, offering us an unprecedented view of mid-18th century Vicenza viticulture, and inviting further research perspectives and even rediscovery. Count Ghellini was patriarch of one of the most powerful families of Vicenza. The work was composed in honor of the marriage of Ghellini's daughter Elena with Count Simandio Chiericati. In approximately 1300 verses we find Bacchus on a long pilgrimage from Florence to Vicenza, his final and most rewarding resting place where he finds gratification in the arms of the nymph Caledonia, surrounded by the most beautiful landscape in Italy, and an endless supply of the finest wines anywhere in the world. "Il Roccolo" continues to be appreciated not only for its poetic value, but for its significant contribution to the viticulture of Italy prior to the devastating phylloxera plague that arrived in Vicenza ca. 1880. The author, Valeriano Canati (1706-1787) was an "homme de lettres" and a member of the Olympian Academy. As a priest, his authorship of the present Bacchian celebration was rather inconvenient, hence the disguise of his identity behind an anagram. According to Rare Book Hub, which as of this writing lists 5,844,118 records in the Rare Book Transaction History, only one other copy of "Il Roccolo" has appeared on the market, and that was 17 years ago at the sale of Feltrinelli Library (Christie's 6/2/1998). The rarity of this book in private ownership is attested by the fact that no less than three facsimiles of it have been published, namely in 1971 (Accademia italiana della cucina, Milan), in 2003 (Provincia di Vicenza), and in 2011 under the title "La modernità del pensiero vitivinicolo di Aureliano Acanti nel Roccolo ditirambo (1754)" by Antonio Calò and Angelo Costacurta (Biblioteca La Vigna, Vicenza). NB: The description of this book given by OCLC is utterly absurd ("An ode to hunting with hounds, with an introduction discussing hunting and country life, and a detailed plan of the imaginary gardens surrounding the fortress"). REFERENCE: Lapiccirella 140.

"Dictionary of love. In which is contained, the explanation of most of the terms used in that language."

Dublin: printed in the year. 1754. "First Dublin edition, and second edition overall; 16mo, pp. xii, [204]; contemporary and likely original calf-backed boards, red morocco label; joints cracked, cords holding. First published in London the previous year and of that ESTC locates 10 copies - 6 in the U.S.). This Dublin edition, likely a piracy, is known by two copies only: Cambridge University and University of Chicago. Translated by the author of Fanny Hill, and based on a French text by J.F. Dreux de Rodier which was first published in 1741. As such, it is the first dictionary of its kind in English. Dr. Roger Lonsdale, of Balliol College, Oxford, was able to attribute this work to Cleland from an examination of the Bodleian copy of the Monthly Review in which Griffiths (the publisher of the London edition) annotated the reviews, sometimes with the names of otherwise anonymous authors. In November, 1753 Ralph Griffiths, himself a publisher of editions of Fanny Hill, published The Dictionary of Love. He reviewed it in the Monthly Review in December, 1753 where he annotated the opening sentence of the review changing ""ingenious author"" to ""Mr. Cleland."" Lonsdale notes that the 10-page preface is by Cleland and that about a quarter of the definitions are also his, the rest being translations from the French. Unknown to Alston, who lists the first edition as well as the later London editions (1776; 1777; 1787; 1795). It was still in print as late as 1824, and there was a Philadelphia edition of 1798. Alston IX, 317 (citing the first edition). See Lonsdale, Roger, New Attributions to John Cleland in The Review of English Studies, New Series, Vol. XXX, no. 119, August 1979, pp. 285-87"

Dell' origine e fundazion de' seggi di Napoli.

Neapel, Raffaele Gessari, 1754. - 4to. 3 parts in one vol. (8), 301, (13); (4), 40; 8, 84 pp. With engr. title page, 29 small and 9 large armorial woodcuts in the text (two of the latter on half-titles) as well as numerous initials. 19th-c. marbled half calf with giltstamped red label to spine. Second edition, first published in 1644: the history of the Neapolitan "seggi" (seats), i.e., municipal wards or decentralized, neighborhood-based political organizations. "Who one was in Naples was inextricably linked to where one was from. One's residence or affiliation within one of the city's five noble districts (seggio of Capuana, Montagna, Nido, Porto, or Portanova) or its lone popular district (seggio del popolo), as much as one's right of precedence in the order of march in parades and processions, reflected one's status or honor among fellow citizens and one's place in the local social and political structure" (Marino, Becoming Neapolitan, p. 3f.). As the seggi archives in the Archivio di Stato were destroyed during WWII, this text remains one of the principal contemporary accounts of the organization of the seggi. Both early editions being excessively rare, it was reprinted in 2005 by Paolo Piccolo. - Includes, with separate title-pages, "Sopplimento all' apologia del terminio" and "Della varieta della fortuna". The woodcuts show the arms of the various seggi as well as those of the noble families associated with them. - Variously browned throughout due to paper. From the library of the Ducs de Luynes at the Château de Dampierre: their bookplate reproducing the arms of Charles Marie d'Albert de Luynes (1783-1839), 7th Duc de Luynes, on pastedown.

[vi] ff., 372, [2] pp.. 1754 Only edition of this history of the Milanese Church, in Italian, by the prefect of Milan's Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Nicolò Sormani (d. ca. 1777); he affirms its apostolic origin, i.e., the legend of St. Barnaba, chiefly by way of a syllogism declaring the authority of oral tradition — that a tradition is true if it is antique and there is no reason to doubt it; that the legend of St. Barnaba's founding the Church is old and inscrutable; and that therefore her legend is true — though an appendix supplies the reader with original documents he nonetheless cites, and an editor's note observes that he himself translated many of them from Latin into Italian for the first time. With this publication, Sormani continued his quest to quell the belligerent hordes of sophists and provocateurs who questioned ecclesiastical traditions, having first published a treatise on the subject in 1740 (De origine apostolica ecclesia Mediolanensis a s. Barnaba apostolo deducta), as the first dissertation in a two-part volume; but this is the only production in the vernacular. The Italian text is accompanied by citations and original documentation, which is in both Italian and, mostly, Latin; it is printed in roman and italic, with one large floriated woodcut initial and a decorative headpiece at the beginning of the first chapter. The final leaf contains the imprimatur and errata. Searches of NUC Pre-1956 and WorldCat locate only two copies in U.S. libraries, one of which has been deaccessioned. Contemporary vellum over boards with four laces visible on covers at spine extremities, gilt title in painted spine compartment, red marbled edges; binding somewhat soiled and bumped and a bit warped, with light worming not penetrating the leather. Title rubbed affecting a few letters; a light brown stain running along the gutter on two leaves and a crescent stain at the bottom of one other not affecting text; small tears at a couple of outer margins; and a handful of natural paper flaws, especially notable to two leaves that literally came up short in the press and therefore have "deckle" lower edges. Old pressure-stamps to title-leaf and a few others, a five-digit accession number stamped in two places, old library pencillings, indications of removed bookplates and card pocket; minor dampstaining, foxing, and age-toning throughout, most notable in the first and last two gatherings. Recital of faults and "library features" makes this sound much less appealing than it is. It is => a sound, attractive, pleasing book.

Serious reflections on the dangerous tendency of the common practice of card-playing; especially of the game of All-Fours, as it hath been publickly play'd at Oxford, in this present year of our Lord, MDCCLIV. In a letter from Mr. Gyles Smith, to his friend Abraham Mixon, Esq; of the Inner Temple

London: W. Owen. [1754]. 8vo., 24pp., well bound in modern boards with morocco labels on both upper cover and spine, lettered in gilt. First edition: scarce, although, not surprisingly, ESTC shows many copies in Oxford libraries. Jessel 1517 (commenting that this is 'an amusing political skit'). This was written in response to the overwhelming popularity of card-playing brought about by the marketing of Edmond Hoyle's prolific publications on card games, including whist, brag and quadrille. The author's view was that any man had a right to do what he liked with his money - however careless, irresponsible or risky such investments might be. 'For my part,' he writes, 'I have always look'd upon a gaming-house in no other light than as an office of conveyancing, where gentlemen may go, and transact business of this sort, without the forms and incumbrances of the law, and (as you will allow) with as little danger of being cheated, as in the more regular, and legitimate method. But gaming may subsist very well without card-playing, as they have not the least necessary dependence on, or connection with each other. Gaming is nothing but the hazarding a sum of money, on the decision of any dubious question, which is frequently call'd betting .....'. So the author uses card-playing and gambling as a metaphor for political machinations - Kings, Queen, Knaves and the rest.

AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE BOOK OF COMMON-PRAYER, AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS, AND OTHER RITES AND CEREMONIES OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND

London: Printed for the Proprietors, and sold by James Hodges, 1754. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Folio. [684] pp. plus four plates (including frontispiece), as called for. Contemporary speckled calf, gilt rules, raised bands, gilt leather label. Modern bookplate in front pastedown and small monogram inkstamp in frontispiece leaf recto and title page, earlier inkstamp of Cornwall House in front free endpaper. Front joint split at head of spine, some edgwear to binding, reinforcement of front hinge in clear tape, minor worming in lower margin of first twelve leaves. Contents bright and clean. Very good. Scarce first collected edition, complete with four plates. The plates depict St. Paul's Cathedral, worshipers at the Church of St. Margaret at Westminster Abbey, the Last Supper, and the Baptism of Jesus. Issued in weekly parts between 1752 and 1754 "as that the common people could purchase it with ease, and neither the price nor size might affright them from pursuing it," the book was intended to provide a detailed explanation of Anglican liturgy through extensive historical and theological annotation of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. The DNB describes the author, Ferdinando Warner (1703-1768), an Anglican minister based in London and later Surrey, as "much esteemed as a popular preacher, and his writings show him to have been a man of wide learning and more than ordinary ability." Assez bel exemplaire, frais.

        Oeuvres EDITION ORIGINALE

à Paris: Chez Prault, 1754. Fine. Chez Prault, à Paris 1754, 10 tomes en 11 Vol. in 2 (9,5x16,5cm), (4) lx, (4) 264pp. et (8) 265-622p. et (12) 350pp. et (4) 440pp. et (4) 519pp. et (4) 510pp. et (4) 399pp. et (4) 322pp. et (4) 411pp. et (2) iv, 493pp. et xxiv, 262pp., onze volumes reliés. - First Edition collective. Title pages in red and black. Full calf time scales. Back tooled raised. Parts of titles in red morocco. Caps heads slightly frayed; ditto for 6 caps tail. Upper jaw of volumes II, III, IV, V, VIII, IX and X in part split. Many corners bumped. Most false securities have not been linked in volumes. Despite these shortcomings, a good set of general appearance, decorative. In addition to works of poetry, drama, criticism, fables, various letters can be found in this edition of De La Motte and his famous correspondence with the Duchess of Lambert at the end of his life. We note that he was the author of L'Europe Galante and therefore he introduced three innovations in opera: ballet, and pastoral comedy-ballet. But more than his stories or tragedies, although they had considerable success in their time, it must be remembered, for his critical writing of the place that the author held in the literary life of his time, including in the quarrel between the ancients and moderns, De La Motte having repeatedly defended the use of modern, advocating the use of the theater prose and poetry, suspecting any pre-established rule of straitjacket creation. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
