[vi] ff., 372, [2] pp.. 1754 Only edition of this history of the Milanese Church, in Italian, by the prefect of Milan's Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Nicolò Sormani (d. ca. 1777); he affirms its apostolic origin, i.e., the legend of St. Barnaba, chiefly by way of a syllogism declaring the authority of oral tradition — that a tradition is true if it is antique and there is no reason to doubt it; that the legend of St. Barnaba's founding the Church is old and inscrutable; and that therefore her legend is true — though an appendix supplies the reader with original documents he nonetheless cites, and an editor's note observes that he himself translated many of them from Latin into Italian for the first time. With this publication, Sormani continued his quest to quell the belligerent hordes of sophists and provocateurs who questioned ecclesiastical traditions, having first published a treatise on the subject in 1740 (De origine apostolica ecclesia Mediolanensis a s. Barnaba apostolo deducta), as the first dissertation in a two-part volume; but this is the only production in the vernacular. The Italian text is accompanied by citations and original documentation, which is in both Italian and, mostly, Latin; it is printed in roman and italic, with one large floriated woodcut initial and a decorative headpiece at the beginning of the first chapter. The final leaf contains the imprimatur and errata. Searches of NUC Pre-1956 and WorldCat locate only two copies in U.S. libraries, one of which has been deaccessioned. Contemporary vellum over boards with four laces visible on covers at spine extremities, gilt title in painted spine compartment, red marbled edges; binding somewhat soiled and bumped and a bit warped, with light worming not penetrating the leather. Title rubbed affecting a few letters; a light brown stain running along the gutter on two leaves and a crescent stain at the bottom of one other not affecting text; small tears at a couple of outer margins; and a handful of natural paper flaws, especially notable to two leaves that literally came up short in the press and therefore have "deckle" lower edges. Old pressure-stamps to title-leaf and a few others, a five-digit accession number stamped in two places, old library pencillings, indications of removed bookplates and card pocket; minor dampstaining, foxing, and age-toning throughout, most notable in the first and last two gatherings. Recital of faults and "library features" makes this sound much less appealing than it is. It is => a sound, attractive, pleasing book.

Early 20th-century half cloth, with the original marbled wrappers bound in.

Knuttel 18468; Picarta (2 copies); Sabin 50563 note; WorldCat (5 copies?). Rare 4to edition, printed and published (probably in the Netherlands) in the same year as the more common first 12mo edition, of a political pamphlet on French-English relations and hostilities, presented as a series of four letters from a Frenchman to a Dutchman during the early part of the French and Indian War (1754-1763) in America, on the eve of the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) in Europe. The English and French fought each other in both venues, trying to conquer each other's American colonies and secure their positions. Many American Indians sided with France. The present pamphlet is written from a French point of view and clearly designed to convince the Dutch that the English were the aggressors. Most of the battles discussed in the pamphlet took place in what is now Canada. Some leaves are somewhat wrinkled but otherwise in very good condition and with generous margins. The bound-in wrappers are somewhat worn, the later binding very good.

        Anas Bahamensis [White-Cheeked Pintail]

London, 1754. Hand-coloured copper engraving, on laid paper. Very good condition. A fine image from Catesby's 'The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands', "the most famous colour-plate book of American plant and animal life...a fundamental and original work for the study of American species." (Hunt) Catesby's Natural History is a vibrant and original work in which each plate seems to have been created without preconception or habitual form, embodying wit and the love every true naturalist feels for nature's beings. Far from being a mere animal and plant identification book, this is a testament to the glory of nature and life. The White-cheeked Pintail or Bahama Pintail is the northernmost subspecies of this handsome duck, which is found in Florida as well as the Bahamas, and in Trinidad and Tobago, and parts of South America. Trained as a botanist, Catesby travelled to Virginia in 1712 and remained there for seven years, sending back to England collections of plants and seeds. With the encouragement of Sir Hans Sloane and others, Catesby returned to America in 1722 to seek materials for his 'Natural History'; he travelled extensively in Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and the Bahamas, sending back further specimens. His preface provides a lengthy account of the development of this work, including his decision to study with Joseph Goupy in order to learn to etch his plates himself to ensure accuracy and economy. A lovely and important work, embodying the most impressive record made during the colonial period of the natural history of an American colony. The most significant work of American natural history before Audubon's Birds of America . Cf. Anker 95; cf. Clark I:55; cf. Dunthorne 72; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 86; cf. The most significant work of American natural history before Audubon's Birds of America . "The Blue-winged Teal (Anas discors) is a small dabbling duck. The adult male has a greyish blue head with a white facial crescent, a light brown body with a white patch near the rear and a black tail. The adult female is mottled brown. Both sexes have a blue wing patch. In flight, they flap their wings especially rapidly. Their breeding habitat is marshes and ponds throughout north and central North America. The nest is a shallow depression on the ground lined with grass and down, usually surrounded by vegetation. They migrate in flocks to Central and South America. During migration, some birds may fly long distances over open ocean. They are occasional vagrants to Europe, where their yellow legs are a distinction from other small ducks like Common Teal and Garganey. DNA analysis of this species has revealed its genetic make up to be almost identical to that of the Cinnamon teal. These birds feed by dabbling in shallow water. They mainly eat plants; their diet may include molluscs and aquatic insects. The call of the male is a short whistle; the female's call is a soft quack." (Wikipedia) Cf. Anker 95; cf. Clark I:55; cf.         A sett of anatomical tables . . .

London, 1754. First Accurate Illustrations of the Fetus in Utero Smellie, William (1697-1763). A sett[!] of anatomical tables, with explanations, and an abridgement of the practice of midwifery, with a view to illustrate a treatise on that subject, and collection of cases. Folio. 22 leaves, unsigned and unpaginated. 39 engraved plates by Charles Grignion after drawings by Jan van Rymsdyk, Pieter Camper (1722?"89) and Smellie himself. London: [D. Wilson], printed in the year 1754. 547 x 362 mm. 18th century marbled boards, worn, rebacked and recornered in calf, free endpapers creased. Minor toning, spotting and offsetting, old repairs to free endpapers, a few insignificant marginal tears, but very good. Ownership inscription ?Wm. Bond the gift of Mr. Hales 1817? on front free endpaper. First Edition of Smellie?s magnificent obstetrical atlas, illustrated with life-size anatomical plates containing the first accurate anatomical illustrations of the fetus in utero. G-M 6154.1. In the preface to his Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Midwifery (1752), Smellie announced his original intention to ?insert in this Compendium, plates of the most useful instruments appertaining to the art of midwifery; but as large drawings could not be properly bound in a book of so small a size, I have resolved to publish them in folio, with that set of prints which I am now preparing, according to the proposals specified in the advertisement at the end of this volume.? This advertisement announced the imminent publication of ?twenty-six plates, of about 18 inches by 12,? engraved from the drawings made by Jan van Rymsdyk ?for the use of those who attend [Smellie?s obstetrical] lectures.? Two years later the Sett of Anatomical Tables was published with the number of plates increased to thirty-nine, eleven of which had been contributed by Pieter Camper, one of Smellie?s former pupils. The remaining two plates, nos. 37 and 39, are presumed to have been drawn by Smellie himself. The atlas was sold by subscription, unbound in sheets, for ?2. 6s?"a very high price for the time. Some sources state that the first edition consisted of only eighty to one hundred copies, but the edition was most probably larger than this. The life-size drawings Rymsdyk made for Smellie, now part of the Hunterian Collection at the University of Glasgow, were ?far superior in accuracy to any that had appeared previously, surpassed only by those he made soon after for William Hunter?s obstetrical atlas, not published until twenty years later? (Hagelin). The drawings by Camper, now preserved in the Library of the Royal College of Physicians at Edinburgh, are mainly diagrammatic, and it is possible that ?Smellie instructed [Camper] to include only such detail as was necessary to his immediate purpose . . . [which] was mainly to indicate the position of the fetus in the uterus, and the application of the forceps to the head? (Thornton, p. 17). Smellie was the leading forceps practitioner in London, and the forceps that he devised?"a short, straight instrument with the blades covered in leather?"held the field for many years in the face of numerous modifications. Smellie was a pioneer of modern obstetrics, and one of the great teachers of midwifery. Among his pupils were William Hunter and the physician-author Tobias Smollett, who edited Smellie?s works for publication. ?His contribution to our knowledge of the mechanism of labor is of fundamental importance. His additions to our knowledge of contracted pelves were also noteworthy. He not only gave directions for measuring the pelvis but was the first to measure the diagonal conjugate diameter and this today remains the most important pelvimetric maneuver we possess? (Thoms, pp. 124?"25). Hagelin, Rare and Important Medical Books, pp. 118?"19. Norman 1955. Thoms, Classical Contributions to Obstetrics and Gynecology, pp. 124?"29. Thornton, Jan van Rymsdyk, pp. 10?"21.

        Carte Générale de L'Amérique

London: Nourse, Vaillant, Millar, Rocque & Sayer, 1754. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, in very good condition. A highly decorative map of the Americas, evincing Palairet's uniquely elegant aesthetic style This artistically virtuous map embraces the entirety of North and South America, and also takes in the western extremities of Europe and Africa. South America is very well defined, and is divided into the various Spanish domains and Portuguese Brazil. North America is depicted on the eve of the Seven Years War. The English colonies running from Georgia up to Nova Scotia hug the Atlantic seaboard, while the massive French empire consisting of Canada and Louisiana extends through the heart of the continent. Quebec City, the capital of New France, is noted on the map. In the west, California is correctly shown to be a peninsula, while the Pacific Northwest is shown to be an enigma. Mexico and the numerous islands of the Caribbean are also portrayed. The map is adorned with a elegant, rococo style cartouche. Jean Palairet was born in Montauban, France, but emigrated to England where he became a French tutor to the children of George II. He later wrote several informative books on arithmetic, language, arts and sciences, and geography. The present map is from the second edition of Palairet's greatest work, the Atlas méthodique , a magnificent cartographical demonstration, in which landmasses are shown in various stages of political definition.         Anas Minor Purpureo Capite [The Buffel's Head Duck]

London, 1754. Hand-coloured copper engraving, on laid paper. Very good condition. A fine image from Catesby's 'The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands', "the most famous colour-plate book of American plant and animal life...a fundamental and original work for the study of American species." (Hunt) Mark Catesby's Natural History is a vibrant and original work in which each plate seems to have been created without preconceptions or habitual form, embodying wit and the love every true naturalist feels for nature's beings. Far from being a mere animal identifcation book, Catesby's work is a testament to the glory of nature and life. The Bufflehead Duck is a small, beautiful diving duck that Catesby could have seen anywhere on the southern Atlantic coast. The black head as a lovely purplish sheen mentioned in the Latin title. Bufflehead is short for Buffalo Head, in reference to what appears to be his disproportionately large head. Trained as a botanist, Catesby travelled to Virginia in 1712 and remained there for seven years, sending back to England collections of plants and seeds. With the encouragement of Sir Hans Sloane and others, Catesby returned to America in 1722 to seek materials for a 'Natural History'; he travelled extensively in the Carolinas, Georgia, and the Bahamas, collecting specimens and making drawings from life. His preface provides a lengthy account of the development of this work, including his decision to study with Joseph Goupy in order to learn to etch his plates himself to ensure accuracy and economy.

Woodcut device on title & 17 folding engraved plates. 6 p.l., 570, xxii pp. Large 4to, cont. mottled sheep (a few minor scuff marks), spine nicely gilt, contrasting vellum lettering piece on spine. Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1754. Third edition, greatly enlarged, of the first exhaustive treatise on the aurora borealis. Mairan attributed the phenomenon to an extension of the sun's atmosphere, which at times enveloped the earth and blended with our atmosphere. "Inquiry into the history and physics of the aurora borealis; the chapter on the relation between the aurora and the magnetic declination is of special interest."-Wheeler Gift Cat. 382. There are many references to Descartes, Newton, Cassini, and Euler. Mairan (1678-1771), while basically a Cartesian, did incorporate some Newtonian ideas in his theories. He was secretary of the Paris Academy of Sciences and belonged to the Royal Societies of London, Edinburgh, and Uppsala, the St. Petersburg Academy, and the Institute of Bologna. Unusually fine copy. Bookplate of Pierre Sciclounoff, the prominent Geneva lawyer and book collector. ❧ D.S.B., IX, pp. 33-34. See E. Newton Harvey's A History of Luminescence, pp. 258-59 for an excellent discussion. .
