Taxonomic literature[:] a selective guide to botanical publications and collections with dates, commentaries and types. Second edition.Utrecht, Bohn, Scheltema & Holkema; The Hague, Junk, 1976-1988. 7 volumes. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth.

      - Second much expanded edition -- growing from one to seven volumes - of an exhaustive bibliography of the literature on taxonomic botany from 1753 to 1940. "This new edition deals with many more botanists, their books and collections, than the modest volume of 1967. We now attempt to give more extensive information on the authors by going into more detail with respect to their collections, the biographical literature about them (one aspect of the book now is that it has become a 'bibliography of bibliographies'), and possible further information of use for the systematist or for the historian of botany. We also provide information on outstanding botanical explorers and collectors" (introduction). In very good condition, only some minor rubbing to the ends of the spine, and volume 1 and 2 are subtly rebound (still matching the other volumes), with the original backstrips laid down.

Capilettera e testatine in xilografia.

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charles II decree of the 12 of May 1691, the Greats of Spain were obliged to take part to the cortege, which

A narrative of some proceedings in the management of Chelsea Hospital, as far as relates to the appointment and dismission of Samuel Lee, surgeon.

London: W. Owen. 1753. 8vo., 95 + (1)pp., recent marbled boards lettered on spine. A very good, crisp copy. First edition. An account of the controversial dismissal of Samuel Lee, a surgeon who claimed great success in the treatment of a neglected area of medicine: 'Tho' various branches of surgery have of late years been greatly improv'd in this kingdom, yet the treatment of ruptures seems entirely to have escaped the attention of our ablest practitioners; and a malady so general as well as grievous has been suffered to become the province of quacks, impostors, instrument-makers, &c.'. In fact Lee himself was judged a quack by his colleagues at Chelsea Hospital, most notably William Cheselden, widely regarded as one of the greatest surgeons of his day, who refused to acknowledge the efficacy of Lee's procedures, for which he was receiving large amounts of government money. This pamphlet was published in Lee's defence, and it seems probably that he wrote it himself. The test, though one-sided, provides a good view of the workings of hospital administration in the mid-18th century. A quite different version of the affair is provided in A True Account of All the Transactions ..... as far as relates to Samuel Lee, Surgeon> published by John Ranby and Caesar Hawkins, two other prominent doctors involved in the dispute.

The Seal for the Court of Common Bench at Westminster A. D.ni MDCXLVIII.

1753 - London: George Vertue, 1753. 220 x 145mm. Trimmed to image and mounted in Victorian album paper. An engraving showing the two sides of the seal of the Court of Common Bench (or 'Pleas'), within an invented rococo border. The front shows a map of England, Wales and Ireland. It was a common law court that heard any case between two individuals which did not concern the king. It was often in conflict over jurisdiction with the Court of King's Bench: however this seal celebrates the reduction in the power of the King's Bench because of the Civil War. The reverse shows the Court of Common Bench in session in Westminster Hall, with the legend 'In the first year of Freedom, by God's blessing restored, 1648'. The court was abolished in 1880. The maker of this seal (and others for Charles I and Charles II) was Thomas Simon (c.1623-65), chief engraver of the Royal Mint. This engraving by Vertue was published in 'The Medals, Coins, Great Seals and other Works of Thomas Simon'.

Printed by C. Say for W. Owen 1753 - foxed in places, leaves at either end stained from turn-ins, pp. [vi], xxii, 131, [4], 4to, contemporary calf, double gilt fillets on sides, spine gilt, red lettering piece, rebacked preserving most of the original spine, corners worn but consolidated, good. First edition in English of a remarkable and scarce book on trade and banking and an important source for Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, particular in regard to exchange mechanisms and coin systems. Nicolaus Magens or Magen, called by Adam Smith Meggens, by Steuart, Megens, and in the Dictionnaire de l'économie politique, Magends, was a German merchant who lived for many years in England and gained a great reputation in commercial matters. In the Universal Merchant, to which he added a postscript in 1756, he showed a deep insight into trade mechanisms, as highly appreciated by Smith: 'The author, after a general treatise on trade and on wealth, by which is meant not merely gold and silver, the common medium of trade, but a pre-eminence of industry, manufactures, and commerce, enters into an enquiry concerning bullion, after which he considers the nature, operation, and effects of banks in general and in particular. The treatise concludes with a further illustration of the business of exchange from the tables of Sir Isaac Newton, with remarks and additions' (Palgrave). The Wealth of Nations contains six substantial direct and indirect references to the Universal Merchant. A further interesting reference is to be found in Smith's Lectures on Jurisprudence.
