Roma 1753 - Acquaforte e bulino. After the author's death, the sheets were inherited by his son Francesco, who edited the first publication in the capital, and then to Paris. The plates were then acquired by Calcografia Camerale today Calcografia Nazionale, where they are still preserved. The works that we offer are part of an album in the final version, printed in Rome between 1770 and 1780.         A narrative of some proceedings in the management of Chelsea Hospital, as far as relates to the appointment and dismission of Samuel Lee, surgeon.

London: W. Owen. 1753. 8vo., 95 + (1)pp., recent marbled boards lettered on spine. A very good, crisp copy. First edition. An account of the controversial dismissal of Samuel Lee, a surgeon who claimed great success in the treatment of a neglected area of medicine: 'Tho' various branches of surgery have of late years been greatly improv'd in this kingdom, yet the treatment of ruptures seems entirely to have escaped the attention of our ablest practitioners; and a malady so general as well as grievous has been suffered to become the province of quacks, impostors, instrument-makers, &c.'. In fact Lee himself was judged a quack by his colleagues at Chelsea Hospital, most notably William Cheselden, widely regarded as one of the greatest surgeons of his day, who refused to acknowledge the efficacy of Lee's procedures, for which he was receiving large amounts of government money. This pamphlet was published in Lee's defence, and it seems probably that he wrote it himself. The test, though one-sided, provides a good view of the workings of hospital administration in the mid-18th century. A quite different version of the affair is provided in A True Account of All the Transactions ..... as far as relates to Samuel Lee, Surgeon> published by John Ranby and Caesar Hawkins, two other prominent doctors involved in the dispute.

The Seal for the Court of Common Bench at Westminster A. D.ni MDCXLVIII.

1753 - London: George Vertue, 1753. 220 x 145mm. Trimmed to image and mounted in Victorian album paper. An engraving showing the two sides of the seal of the Court of Common Bench (or 'Pleas'), within an invented rococo border. The front shows a map of England, Wales and Ireland. It was a common law court that heard any case between two individuals which did not concern the king. It was often in conflict over jurisdiction with the Court of King's Bench: however this seal celebrates the reduction in the power of the King's Bench because of the Civil War. The reverse shows the Court of Common Bench in session in Westminster Hall, with the legend 'In the first year of Freedom, by God's blessing restored, 1648'. The court was abolished in 1880. The maker of this seal (and others for Charles I and Charles II) was Thomas Simon (c.1623-65), chief engraver of the Royal Mint. This engraving by Vertue was published in 'The Medals, Coins, Great Seals and other Works of Thomas Simon'.

Amsterdam: n.p. 1753. Four volumes in two, octavo; with all four titles and half-titles, each volume with an engraved plate as well as an engraved headpiece vignette at start of text; contemporary French mottled calf, an attractive set. The second French edition, with four wonderful engravings and four vignettes by Fessard, and the first illustrated edition in any language. An earlier French translation, by Miltz and de Saint-Germain, was published in 1746, and it was not until 1753 that this edition came out, newly revised and extended by the prominent eighteenth-century man-of-letters, Jean-Baptiste Dupuy-Demportes (d. 1770). Although it pretends to derive from an Italian source, the Memoirs was created by an Englishman. The text was sometimes thought to be the work of Bishop Berkeley, but became correctly attributed to Berington during the nineteenth century. As the title suggests, the work takes the form of a trial transcript, with questioning from various inquisitors and a learned commentary from one Signor Rhedi. The protagonist Gaudentio, hauled in front of the Inquisition, describes Mezzorania in Africa, a city which has been cut off from external contact for over three thousand years. His first impression of the principal city of Phor is of an 'immense Garden', but his more detailed analysis shows a city which owes much to the solar model earlier proposed by Campanella in Città del Sole. Less regulated than many other utopias, the citizens have a system based on the precept 'Thou shalt do no wrong to anyone'. Unusually for the strict utopia, long-term relationships based on love are actively encouraged; indeed, Gaudentio talks at length about his own relationship with a Mezzoranian woman. It is this emotional engagement which leads Rees to see in the Memoirs an unusually novelistic utopia, and thus a work which avoids some of the neatness and simplifications of others in the genre.Ellison, in an article devoted to this 'forgotten utopia' and its authorship, comments that 'Berington can stand upon his own merits, and the early appraisal of the work which saw in it the reflection of a wise, humane, and generous spirit does not have to be seriously discounted.' ('Gaudentio Di Lucca: A Forgotten Utopia', PMLA, 1935). Similarly, Gove happily approves Dunlop classing the work with Gulliver's Travels and Robinson Crusoe. Heads of spines chipped.

A Dissertation on the Numbers of Mankind in antient and modern Times:

Edinburgh: for G. Hamilton and J. Balfour,, 1753. in which The superior Populousness of Antiquity is maintained. Robert Wallace (1697?1771) was an interesting figure in the Scottish Enlightenment, a founding member of the Rankenian Club during his university days and also active in the Philosophical and Select societies. His elaborate history of population was based on the extensive research in ancient history that he had originally presented to the Philosophical Society some time before 1745. Wallace opened his argument with a hypothetical model for the geometrical rate of world population growth, indicating that present world population was far below its potential. As Wallace was completing work on the Dissertation in 1751 he showed it to fellow Philosophical Society member David Hume, who reciprocated with the essay he published in the Political Discourses of 1752: "Of the populousness of ancient nations". Hume argued that population estimates in ancient sources were unlikely to be as accurate as modern assessments, but he graciously acknowledged his debt to Wallace, to which Wallace replied in the lengthy appendix here. "This polite exchange was widely celebrated as a model for the pursuit of truth in an enlightened age. Montesquieu supervised the translation of both works into French. In the Confessions Rousseau acknowledged the spirit of the debate, praising Hume in particular for having helped edit Wallace's text" (ODNB). Wallace's emphasis on the geometrical rate of population growth was a direct influence on Thomas Malthus's population calculus in the Essay on the Principle of Population.
