Tagli colorati a spruzzo. All'antiporta del primo volume, tavola allegorica incisa su rame.

Manuscript compilation on paper, in Spanish

Madrid, Guadalajara Folio (32.5 cm; 12.25"). [17 (2 blank)] ff.. 1751?74 In 1679 the crown authorized the brothers of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri to establish themselves in Guadalajara, Mexico, and to build a church and chapel near the city's cathedral. This gathering of three cahiers contains a copy, bearing the true signature of the king (not a stamped one), of the authorization allowing the Oratorians' move from their original site to a new one on the Plazuela de Fernando; documentation that the local officials and the bishop have received copies of that decree; and a later => denial by the king, likewise with his signature (not a stamp), of a petititon by the same house of Oratorians to establish a school for teaching boys. It seems the Oratorians had already established the school without permission, and were here royally ordered to cease operation of it! All written in clear hands; cahiers sewn, one document, a single leaf, loose by itself. Minor staining in lower margins of some leaves; minor insect damage costing some letters and an occasional short word but not impairing ability to read and comprehend.

Paris, l'Imprimerie Royale, MDCCLI 1751 - 4ºmayor (25 x 19,4 cm.) “The scientific result of the expedition was clear: the earth is indeed a spheroid flattened at the poles, as Newton had maintained. Bouger and La Condamine were unable, however, to agree on the joint publication of their works. Their long quarrel continued through a series of memoirs that were essentially mutual refutations of no scientific value; it ceased only with the death of Bouger in 1758”. Sabin, 38479.         The history of our national debts and taxes, from the year MDCLXXXVIII, to the present year MDCCLI.

Four vols. in one, 8vo, (4) 87 and (4) 164 and (4) 144 and (4) 185 (1)pp, 8 folding tables, complete with the half-title and title to each part, each part with its own pagination and register, contemporary calf gilt, rebacked. A very good copy indeed. A comprehensive and detailed history of British taxes from 1688 to 1751. "I hope", writes Gordon, that "this book will establish a maxim observed by all wise nations, but exploded by all wicked ministers, that the annual expence ought never to exceed the annual revenue; and that consequently, when an increase of the former becomes necessary for securing or vindicating the honour or rights of a nation, the latter ought to be increased in proportion, if necessary, even to the utmost the people can spare from their daily subsistence. It will likewise, I hope, establish another maxim, which is this, that when the rich men of any country (who in all free countries must have the government in their hands) endeavour to spare themselves by taxing the poor, they will always at last find themselves disappointed, and in the mean time will ruin the trade and credit of their country".

16 folding engraved plates & 11 engraved headpieces. xviii, 364 pp.; 2 p.l., 427 pp. Two vols. Small 8vo, cont. polished mottled calf (short split to foot of lower joint of Vol. II), spines gilt, red & citron morocco lettering pieces on spines. Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1751. Second edition, considerably enlarged, and a fine association copy: this belonged to Charles Bonnet (1720-93), "one of the fathers of modern biology" (D.S.B.), who has signed both title-pages and made a note on the free front-endpaper of each volume "Donné par l'illustre Auteur." Bonnet was a student of Réaumur and both worked on regeneration. It was Réaumur's suggestion that inspired Bonnet to work on aphids which led to his first -- in 1746 -- and greatest discovery, the parthenogenesis of the aphid. The two had been frequent correspondents since 1737. This is an early and famous work on the artificial incubation of eggs. "But the most famous of all the attempts to make artificial as successful as natural incubation were those of de Réaumur, whose book De l'art de faire éclore les Poulets of 1749 achieved a wide renown. He devotes many chapters to a detailed description of incubators of very various kinds; but he nowhere gives any indication of his percentage hatch. It was probably low. He speaks also of the 'funestes effets' of the vapours of the dung on the developing embryos, without, however, furnishing any foundation for an exact teratology. In the second volume he describes those experiments on the preservation of eggs by varnish which caught the imagination of Maupertuis and were held up to an immortal but by no means deserved ridicule by Voltaire in his Akakia."-Needham, A History of Embryology, p. 203. The finely engraved plates and headpieces show every step of artificial incubation in great detail. This enlarged edition has an extra "Mémoire" with an accompanying additional plate. Fine set and a wonderful association copy, linking two of the greatest natural historians of the 18th century. ❧ D.S.B., XI, pp. 327-35. .

1751. 2 vols. in 1, 8vo., titles printed in red and black, (10) + 204 and (2) + 271 + (1)pp., contemporary German half calf over marbled boards, spine fully gilt with raised bands and contrasting morocco labels, red edges. A fine copy. First edition in German: scarce thus. Sometime thought to be the work of Bishop Berkeley, this is in fact a utopian novel by Simon Berington (1680-1755), professor of poetry and philosophy at the English College at Douai. It was translated into German by Johann Bernhard Nack. 'Despite the claim that the author first wrote in Italian, this work was originally written in English by a Catholic priest. It gained early fame because it was attributed to Bishop George Berkeley. Neither Berkeley nor Berington bothered to deny the attribution, and over ten editions in English, French, and German were published between its first publication in 1737 and the death of the author in 1755. Berington, through the testimony of his hero Gaudentio di Lucca at the Inquisition, describes the kingdom of Mezzorania in northern Africa. In this utopian society the guiding principle is that Nature is the source of all that is good for mankind. There are echoes of other 18th-century writers, Fénelon and Lescondel, for example, and perhaps even the earlier Vairasse. Mezzorania, it should be noted, is still another of those countries set in a remote area, occupied, in this case, three thousand years earlier by a people fleeing from invading armies. Without contact with the outside world they have been free to develop in a natural environment, with a natural religion and a consequent utopian society.' [Arthur O. Lewis, Utopian literature in the Pennsylvania State University libraries,> 1984, p.18].

A CONTINUATION OF THE ESSAY UPON FIELD-HUSBANDRY, AS IT IS, OR MAY BE ORDERED IN NEW-ENGLAND

New London: Timothy Green, 1751. 16mo. Modern blue cloth, gilt-lettered spine. Titlepage trimmed along top edge, touching the top of the first two words of the title. Hole (perhaps a paper flaw) in blank inner margin of the titlepage, not affecting text. Old dampstain throughout. Good. The rare third part of the landmark series of six essays on American agriculture by Jared Eliot. Though the title indicates that the text is limited to New England, Eliot discusses the state of "field husbandry" throughout the colonies, including New York and the South. The DAB emphasizes that for a long time these essays were "the most widely read and prized agricultural essays in America." This third essay contains much on the growing of grains, including wheat, barley, oats, and millet, as well as "Indian corn," and also discusses the need to drain swampland in order to reclaim it for crops. Through his agricultural essays Eliot helped to introduce the concept of soil conservation in the British colonies, and was largely responsible for introducing the silk industry to colonial America. Over the course of the six essays Eliot dismisses the opinion of some in Great Britain that the colonies are of little use. Eliot argues that as the colonial population increases, the number and quality of goods the colonies are able to send to Great Britain will also increase. But more importantly, the demand for British goods will likewise rise, giving Great Britain the double benefit of a greater supply network and a larger market. Eliot is also remembered fondly in New Haven for establishing Yale's first endowed fund to buy books, a legacy which funds purchases to this day. EVANS 6666. NAIP w037582.         A Hint on Duelling. In a Letter to a Friend.

1751. Rare English Anti-Dueling Pamphlet [Dueling]. [Great Britain]. A Hint on Duelling: In a Letter to a Friend. London: Printed for M. Sheepey, 1751. [iv], 22 pp. With a half-title. Octavo (8" x 5"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in contemporary marbled wrappers. Light rubbing, a few creases to wrappers. Moderate toning to text, light soiling to preliminary leaves and verso of final leaf. Early owner inscription to head of half-title, interior otherwise clean. A nice copy of a rare title. * First edition. The author does not want to suppress dueling in all cases, but suggests that the practice could be diminished substantially by the "The erecting of a proper Court, A Tribunal of Honour," where aristocratic court officers and jurymen "shall sit to prevent the Calamities of which Duelling may be productive, or to exact proper penalties of the proper offenders. No longer let Men of Honour be hauled before incompetent judges, whose Stations incapacitate them from sympathizing with the Accused, or entering into the merits of the Case; but let them have the Common Right of Englishmen and be tried by their Peers. No longer let the unfortunate Challenger, but he who made the challenge unavoidable, be punish'd. No longer let a shameful Death be the Retribution of an Action which the Voice proclaims it Infamous to Decline. The Decision of Men of adequate Character and Authority would in most Cases after Insults received prevent Duels; and where they fail'd, a due-proportioned Punishment judiciously and impartially inflicted would soon lessen the frequency of the practice" (12-13). A second edition was published in 1752. It provoked a response by Abraham Clarke entitled, A Home-Thrust at Duelling, Intended as an Answer to a Late Pamphlet Intitled, A Hint on Duelling. Both editions of A Hint are rare. OCLC and the ESTC locate 1 copy (Lambeth Palace Library) and 2 copies of the second edition (British Library, National Library of Scotland).

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[2] ff. “Amsterdam” [i.e., Rouen?]: Francois Joly, 1751 12mo (175 x 100 mm). [2] ff., viii, 120 pp. Half-title, title printed in red and black, woodcut title ornament and two head-pieces. Late 19th-century dark blue morocco-backed marbled boards, spine gold-tooled with crowned monogram ?LPV Early, possibly second, edition of this best-selling biography of one of the great Parisian heart-stoppers, the femme de salon and proto-feminist Anne or Ninon de Lenclos (1616-1706). A woman of outstanding intellect and musicianship, Ninon's seductive charms were legendary and larger than life. Her countless lovers, enjoyed in rapid sequential monogamy from the age of 16 to 70, were said to include every man of distinction of her time; her salon also welcomed women and became in her later years the most desirable invitation of even the most proper social aspirants. The dramatist Antoine Bret's account of her exploits dwells at length on the tragic tale of her natural son the Chevalier de Villiers, who, raised by his father the Marquis de Gersay in ignorance of his mother's identity, fell in love with her when admitted to her salon in young adulthood. Her vices stopping short of incest, she was obliged to reveal their relationship, driving him to suicide. This story alone may have been enough to send Bret's book to the "top of the charts". The present edition, attributed to Rouen by the BnF cataloguers on the basis of the type, ornaments and paper, followed soon after the probable first edition with imprint Amsterdam & Paris: Bauche & Rollin, 1751. Querard and Gay mention an edition of 1750, apparently in error, since no such copies are located and a "permission tacite" was granted to Bauche in late 1750-early 1751, for publication of these memoirs (BnF, ms. fr. 21994, n° 40: cf. BnF online catalogue). Many other editions followed, often issued in conjunction with the spurious Lettres de Ninon de L'Enclos au marquis de Sevigné, of which the earliest recorded edition dates to 1750 and bears the same false "Amsterdam: François Joly" imprint as this edition, but was printed in France, according to the BnF analysis of its printing materiel. As was common in clandestine printing of this period, more than one edition may have appeared under the same false imprint and with the same pagination; the BnF catalogue describes an edition with this imprint as having a copper-engraved title vignette, whereas the title ornament of this copy is woodcut.
