HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS ... : Auricula Ursi I; Danaee (print)

Original hand-coloured engraving drawn by Georg Ehret and executed by J. M. Seligmann. Leaf measures 19.9 x 14.2 inches (50.5 x 36 cm). Fine condition. Matted and ready for framing. From Christoph Trew's magnificent HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS OMNEM PER ANNUM SUPERBIENS FLORIBUS published in three volumes over a 36 year period from 1750-1786. Painted in a more opaque gouache to resemble a painting rather than the traditional practice of using translucent water-colours that allowed more of the engraving to show through. Each piece was meant to capture the flower at the peak of it's beauty instead of focusing solely on scientific detail. Ehret contributed 44 of the 180 illustrations in the entire work and is the single most important botanical artist of the era. HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS is considered to be one of the most sumptuous of the florilegia. Being one of the most elusive of the great flower books, the opportunity to own one of these leaves is reserved for only the most discriminating collectors.

Den Stormægtigste Monarchs og Herre Friderich den Femte....Reyse Igiennem Riigerne Dannemark og Norge, 1749, ved Teigninger forestillet...

Uden Sted og år (København 1750-54). Folio-oblong.

Reilly for the Author. 1750 vi, [8] subscribers, [3], x-xxi, [2], 24-434pp; v, [4], 10-429, [7]pp index, 2 large folding maps, 8 plates (7 folding), 3 double folding engraved prospects, as required by the 'directions to the binder'; sl. browning.Handsomely bound in full contemporary calf, raised bands, gilt lattice pattern decoration in each compartment, red morocco labels.ESTC T97653. First edition. In 1750, Willes, a touring English gentlemen described the streets of Cork as being narrow, dirty and badly lit. Coaches were impractical, leaving sedan cars the only suitable mode of transport. In this same year Dr Charles Smith also published his detailed and long-awaited account of the history of Cork City and County, with descriptions of their contemporary state. Like Willes he also concerned himself with the unhealthy and unsightly state of the city, and noted a report by a Dr. Rogers who outlined that great quantities of filth and animal entrails were spread over the streets. This had caused the outbreak of epidemics in the city, such as small pox. In contrast to these descriptions of misery, Smith also details the expansion of the city in previous decades, in particular the building of the many quays, and the improvements for the wealthier classes. For example, a large bowling green with trees planted on its margin, which was located in the newly developed western marshes and, next to it, the Assembly House (long since disappeared) where the upper classes met twice a week to discuss the news and politics of the day. He also describes the daily life of those who live in the mansions on the outskirts of the town, what are now Cork's principal suburbs, and compares the banks of the River Lee to the Seine in Paris and the Thames in London, albeit on a smaller scale. On the northside of the city, Smith notes there was a nice hamlet with several houses and pleasant gardens known as Sunday's Well, and also mentions large plantations of chilli and hautboy strawberries, now reflected in the placename, Strawberry Hill.

A North View of Denbigh Castle in North Wales

London: Published by John Boydell engraver at the Globe near Durham Yard in the Strand, 1750. Engraving. In excellent condition. Framed in a beautiful gold-leaf frame with a gold wash-line mount. Image size: 11 1/4 x 17 1/4 inches. Framed Size: 20 x 25 1/2 inches. A handsome view of a fox hunt with Denbigh Castle in North Wales pictured in the background. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside, they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. John Boydell made a name for himself by joining this nationalistic trend and publishing a long series of topographical engravings. This fine view of Denbigh Castle in Northern Wales is one of the earliest examples of Boydell's work, when he was known more as an engraver than a publisher and printseller.John Boydell is one of the most influential figures in the history of English printmaking. He was not only an accomplished engraver, and an industrious publisher, but as a printseller he came to dominate the English print trade. He is best known as the originator of the Shakespeare Gallery, which made him one of the most successful print-sellers of his time. Clayton, The English Print 1688- 1802 p. 115-116 & 155

        Magnolia [Pl. LXIII]

[Nuremberg]: 1750-1773. Engraving, coloured by hand, by J.J. or J.E.Haid. Very good condition. 17 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches. 20 x 14 1/4 inches. A very fine image from Trew's 'Plantae Selectae', one of the greatest of all eighteenth-century botanical books, drawn by the greatest of eighteenth- century botanical artists, George Dionysius Ehret. Linnaeus, wrote to Trew, in Latin, that "The miracles of our century in the natural sciences are your work of Ehret's plants...nothing to equal them was seen in the past or will be in the future." Christoph Trew, a physician and botanist, had for a number of years been an admirer of Ehret's work. Ehret, a brilliant botanical artist, was unrivalled in his ability to "achieve realism, majesty, ineffable colour, all in one breathtaking look." (Hunt). Born in Heidelberg in 1710, he originally worked as a gardener and practised drawing in his spare time. His artistic abilities led him to the service of a Regensburg banker named Leskenkohl, and it was during this period that Trew met Ehret. Trew was to remain a friend and patron of Ehret's throughout his life, and by 1742, the germ of what was to become the present publication was already under discussion when Trew wrote to Christian Thran in Carlsruhe "Every year I receive some beautifully painted exotic plants [by Ehret] and have already more than one hundred of them...." Ehret moved to London in the late 1730s, where he painted the recently introduced exotics at the Chelsea Physic Garden and established himself as a teacher of flower-painting and botany. Discussions about the projected work continued by letter until 1748, when Johann Jacob Haid from Augsburg agreed to produce the engravings from Ehret's drawings.
