18th-Century Document Authorizing a Sale of Land

Eastchester: , 1750 Eastchester, 1750. unbound. 2 pages (front and back), 16.5 X 12 inches, Eastchester, County of Westchester [The Bronx], April 4, 1750. In this document, a woman named Sarah Pell Palmer sells a tract of land that will eventually become Co-op City, in part: "For the sum of two-hundred and thirty pounds current money paid by Israel Hunt, [Sarah Pell Palmer] assigns for ever a certain small tract of land, by the Highway that runs to Hutchinson's, southerly west and westerly by the land of Nehemiah Palmers, as also the liberty of the stream of Rattlesnake Creek, which was formerly granted onto Aaron Owen - above the road that goes to Hutchinson%u2019s, together with all the singular the houses, out house, barns, and orchard garden. Bounded as follweth: the northerly road easterly by the land of Nehemiah Palmer, southerly by the land of Nehemiah Palmer and Joseph Drake." In addition to being signed by Palmer, this document is signed by Samuel Sneden (an early Bronx land owner and Administrative official) and by Samuel Purdy (a sheriff, clerk, and colonial official). Weaknesses at the folds with occasional separations (as should be expected); otherwise very good condition. According to Bronx historian John McNamara, Anne Hutchinson's house was situated south of the Split Rock (a Bronx landmark), located at the intersection of the New England Thruway (I-95) and the Hutchinson River Parkway, near the border of the Bronx and Westchester County. Rattlesnake Creek is currently under landfill in Co-op City. The lands of Joseph Drake, though extensive, can be seen as being part of the Baychester section of the Bronx, west of Co-op City, probably encompassing Boston Road and extending up through Palmer Street. There is a Rattlesnake Creek that is dammed within the confines of Seton Falls Park, the Baychester section of the Bronx. This must be discounted as the geographical reference in the above deed because of its distance from the Anne Hutchinson estate.

The Moral and Political Works of Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury. Never before collected together. To which is prefixed, The Author's Life, Extracted from That said to be written by Himself, As Also from The Supplement to the said Life by Dr. Blackbourne; and farther illustrated by the Editor, with Historical and Critical Remarks on his Writings and Opinions

London: 1750 First collection edition of Hobbes' works. . Contemporary reddish-brown calf, with gilt fillet border on covers, spine richly tooled in compartments with gilt brown morocco label. Gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled edges and endpapers. . Folio (14 1/s x 9 1/4"; 365 x 337 mm.). . Engraved frontisportrait, engraved title for the Leviathan, and numerous woodcut tailpieces. Joints skillfully repaired, old, faded dampstain at upper margin of first one hundred pages, not extending to text. Overall a remarkably tall, clean copy in a pleasing binding. Published a hundred years after the first edition of the Leviathan, this collection is one of the most eloquent testimonies to Hobbes' pervasive influence on British and European thinking. His radical materialism and nominalism embodied the clarity that Enlightenment thinkers were calling for. His depressing picture of a state of nature in which men's lives were "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short" became an endorsement for a strong central power, while his anticlerical views were exploited fully. Mainstream Reformation thinkers, though, felt that his attack on superstition could too easily be transferred to Christianity, and Hobbes' implicit atheism meant that a direct quote from or reference to his work could never be mae without attracting suspicion. Many of his key points were thus blended into the works of Enlightenment philosophers by means of disowning or execrating. Hobbes' assignment of the primacy of self-fulfillment over denial is still a fundamental premise in the modern Western organization of society

The engraving is 465*315 mm, & with borders 493*356 mm, card mounted, originally priced at 1s 6d. Number 62 of Boydell's One Hundred Views in England and Wales, which was published in 1770. Tiny spot at center. Populated with 5 human figures, cattle, goats and 2 dogs. Boydell, engraver and printseller, was the most important single print publisher during the period in which British art rose to European prominence. Moreover, his shrewd selection of paintings for publication and of fine young engravers to interpret them produced, especially in the 1760s and 1770s, some of the most distinguished (and profitable) copperplates to be crafted in Britain.         Autograph manuscript, signed. 6 1/2 pages.

1750 - Nollet, Jean-Antoine, Abbe (1700-1770). Autograph manuscript signed. Paris, July 13, 1750. 6-1/2pp., written on 2 half sheets folded to make 4 leaves (inner sheet made up of 2 quarter sheets pasted together). Creased horizontally where previously folded, negligible offsetting, otherwise fine. Nollet trained for the priesthood, but abandoned theology for science shortly after being ordained. He became famous in the 1730s for his cours de physique, a series of scientific demonstrations performed on some 350 different instruments, constructed for the most part by himself: "These were not mere shows, as one sees from their expanded syllabus, the famous Lecons de physique, which appeared in six volumes between 1743 and 1748 and was often reprinted. The presentations are lively, comprehensive and up-to-date, with full directions for realizing the effects under study and excellent illustrations of apparatus" (DSB). In 1739 Nollet entered the Academy of Sciences (where he would become one of its leading members), and a few years later he was appointed to the University of Paris's first professorship of experimental physics. In 1845 he developed a theory of electrical attraction and repulsion that supposed the existence of a continuous flow of electrical matter between charged bodies. Nollet's theory at first gained wide acceptance, but met its nemesis in 1852 with the publication of the French translation of Franklin's Experiments and Observations on Electricity. Franklin and Nollet found themselves on opposite sides of current debate about the nature of electricity, with Franklin supporting action at a distance and two qualitatively opposing types of electricity, and Nollet advocating mechanical action and a single type of electric fluid. Although Nollet's theory was eventually abandoned, the arguments between the two factions ended up strengthening Franklinian theory: "Under prodding from Paris the Philadelphia system was progressively refined into classical electrostatics. In particular, the need to come to terms with Nollet colored the reforms of Aepinus (1759); and Nollet himself, by spreading the dualistic theory of Robert Symmer in Italy, set in train developments that culminated in the invention of the electrophorus (1775), which in turn forced the excision of the last vestiges of the traditional theories (the 'electrical atmospheres') from Franklin's system" (DSB). The present manuscript is a lengthy analysis of a manuscript treatise on electricity submitted to the Academy of Sciences by one M. Martinenq of Hyers in Provence. Martinenq's treatise was based on the following three principles: (1) the existence of only four elements (air, fire, water and earth); (2) the unchangeable nature of these elements, which cannot be altered by chemical means; and (3) the existence of affinities between like elements that would allow, for example, the "fire" in one object to communicate with the "fire" in another. It was largely on the basis of this last principle that Martinenq proposed to provide explanations for ten electrical phenomena; however, according to Nollet's critique, "several [of these phenomena] resemble each other so much that one cannot help assigning them to the same cause; the majority are badly expressed; the author believes certain circumstances to be essential when in fact they are immaterial, and certain of these facts are so expressed as to make one believe that Mr. Martinenq has not been well instructed in this subject." In the course of debunking Martinenq's system, Nollet discusses electrical phenomena such as friction, the attraction between electrified bodies, the generation of sparks and noise, and brush discharge. He ended by recommending that the Academy of Sciences not publish Martinenq's treatise, since "quant aux phenomenes Èlectriques, il m'a paru que l'auteur n'etait pas suffisamment au fait de la matiere" (as for electrical phenomena, it seems to me that the author is not sufficiently grounded in the

This one, which has two semi-colons in the top margin of the decorative border, is not recorded by Miller, who notes: ?These are three different settings of the bookseller's ticket which David Hall inserted into certain London-imported books which he sold in his bookshop . . . these tickets date from the late 1750's and early 1760's.? On the front free endpaper is the ink signature of Samuel Clark: ?Sam. Clark?s Book / Bt. 9th mo. 30th. 1762?. Above that is the ink signature of M. G. Richardson. The two signatures are possibly connected.         Drawings S. Banks

ND [c.1750].. Full Calf. Very Good. A Rare Survival of Understated Elegance. A charmingly primitive miniature Lady's Drawing Book. Very Good, delicate condition. Rubbing to spine and tips. Small chip to head of spine. 12 mo. (4 3/8 x 3.25 inches). Speckled calf finely ornamented with gilt tooled trailing grape vines surrounding the perimeter with corner ribbon and floral spray pattern on both front and rear boards. In the center of the front board; gilt lettering "Drawings S. Banks." stamped on red panel set within a gilt stamped frame of triangle design. Gilt Grecian urn surrounded by Willow branch above the lettered panel, with urn below. The trailing grape vine & corners, gilt urn with willow pattern from front board repeated on the rear board. There is evidence of [period] gilt removal to the asymmetrical trailing portion and base of the gilt design on the rear board. Gilt trailing grape vine and fillet pattern to spine. Marbled end-papers with gilt turn-ins. The album consists of 41 unnumbered leaves; each block-printed around the perimeter to create an arabesque patterned border. Each leaf is printed in alternating colors of Prussian Green, Indian Red and Charcoal. There is evidence of seven leaves excised from the center of the book. The sole painting is on the final leaf; that being a delicate bouquet of rosebuds with withered leaves and silvered Jasmine spray. The overall tone of this tiny album is one of muted understated elegance. Perhaps this book was initially intended as a mourning book- thus the Grecian urn/willow motif in the tooling, and somber color palette. Although there is little information which leads us to definitive attribution of this small book; speculation concerning its origin is in our favor. The book is undoubtedly mid-eighteenth century British. The binding is elaborately designed yet primitive in execution; undoubtedly created by a novice- or apprentice- binder. The marbled endpaper pattering and laid paper with tear drops are indicators of eighteen century craftsmanship. And finally, as Sir Joseph Banks, Naturalist and Baron (British 1743–1820) clearly reigned in the world of eighteenth century botanical exploration, discovery and execution, one would like to find association. Sir Banks' mother was named Sarah, as was his sister; Sarah Sophia (1744–1818) who was a noted collector of antiquarian items; historic coins, metals, engravings and ephemera of historic significance- perhaps she painted flowers, as well.
