Maritime composite atlas. Amsterdam, c. 1750.

1750. Uncoloured. 530 x 305 mm. 20 large engraved sea charts, pasted back to back, nineteenth-century half calf. A rare maritime atlas for V.O.C. ships bound for the Far East, published by Johannes van Keulen II, the Dutch East India Company's official map maker and hydrographer during the years 1726-55. This atlas is a fine and rare example to be used on board, including 20 large engraved sea charts, pasted back to back, as typical for on-board use, making them more durable. This atlas also includes the most important celestial chart of the period, the "Stellatum Planisphaerium" of Louis Vlasbloem. The small spheres show the geocentric and heliocentric configurations of the solar system. The expansion of Dutch maritime trade in the Far East provided new astronomical knowledge of the southern hemisphere: twelve new constellations were added to the Ptolemaic canon, making a total of 60. The newly discovered southern constellations include: Pavo, Phoenix, Indus, and others, and Coma Berenices in the north. Celestial navigation was practiced by Chinese and western sailors, and a celestial chart was of the highest importance for navigation. The volume also includes an important and scarce world map, here in its second state with additional privilege. It is on Mercator's projection with only a relatively small number of coastal place names and no interior features or localities at all. After 1682 other general maps were used by Van Keulen, possibly because of the unfamiliarity of Mercator's projection. Shows California as an island and no further coastlines to the north. Includes: 1. Stellatum Planisphaerium 2. Wassende Graade Kaart van Alle Bekende Zeekusten op den Geheelen Aardbodem 3. Pascaerte van't Noordlyckste Deel van Europa 4. Scottish physician Thomas Short is best known as the author of the first monograph in English on obesity (see Garrison-Morton.com 7061). The present treatise. published 20 years after Short’s Dissertation on Tea (1730), begins with a discussion on the history, cultivation, preparation and the good / bad effects of tea. This is followed by discourses on sugar, milk, “made-wines” (such as mead, cowslip wine, gooseberry wine, etc.), brandy, rum, arrack, punch, cider, tobacco, malt liquor, and the medicinal benefits of bathing. The work ends with a chapter on gout, a disease which Short claimed “if rightly managed, instead of a punishment and misfortune, is a means to lengthen life, and a sign of strong principles of health” (p. 405).

        Carte des Lacs du Canada

Map taken from the "Histoire General des Voyages " by Prevost. This is an excellent little map depicting the five Great Lakes. While this map uses the same title as Bellin's prototype map of the Great Lakes, published in Charlevoix's Histoire et Description Generale de la Nouvelle France in 1744, it has been updated: Lakes Erie and Ontario are more accurately defined and the spurious islands in Lake Huron have been eliminated. However, there are errors and inaccuracies. Copperplate, in good conditions. Parigi Paris 290 210

        Sinagogue des Juifs.

      c. 1750 - Copper engraving, mounted. Overall dimensions: 48.5 x 60.5 cm. Image size: 30 x 43.4 cm. Detailed engraved view of the interior of the synagogue from Calmet's renowned work. Antoine Augustin Calmet (1672 – 1757), a French Benedictine monk, was one of the most renowned Bible scholars of his day. He taught philosophy and theology at the abbey at Moyenmoutier and during the early years of his career worked on a massive 23-volume commentary of the Bible, which was first published in Paris between 1707 and 1716. By 1726, due to high demand, two further editions of this work had been published, followed by several editions of Latin translation. Calmet's biblical writings established him as a leading scholar, and he spent many years trying to popularize his work of biblical exegesis in the church. This engraving comes from a copy of a later edition of Calmet's commentary.

        De l'Esprit des loix.

Edinburgh: chez G. Hamilton & J. Balfour,, 1750. Nouvelle Edition, Avec les dernières Corrections & Illustrations de l'Auteur. Two volumes, octavo (195 x 120 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands ruled in gilt, lozenge tool to compartments, edges speckled red. Early ownership signatures, red wax seal, and 19th-century armorial bookplate to each front pastedown. Spine labels lacking but titles readable, joints cracked, boards and spines rubbed, small insect damage to left-hand bottom corner of front pastedown and lower margin of first 9 leaves of Volume 1, front free endpaper of Volume 2 partially detached, endleaves lightly spotted. First Edinburgh edition of "one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century" (PMM) - Montesquieu's classification of political structures and his comparative and historical political sociology. This edition is particularly appealing as David Hume was closely involved with seeing it through the press. "Later in 1749 Hume helped to put through the press at Edinburgh a translation of some sections of the Esprit des Loix, for which Montesquieu had supplied his final corrections" (Mossner, p. 229). These final corrections are found in the present work as errata leaves at the end of each volume, as well as an "Avis au Lecteur", in which the editor describes the work as "un ouvrage aussi original, où le génie de l'Auteur répond si parfaitement à la grandeur du sujet [...] En un mot, par des réflexions également nouvelles et profondes sur le c?ur et l'esprit humain, et sur un nombre infini de causes dont l'influence nous étoit imperceptibile, il a sçu renverser les erreurs les plus spécieuses, & répandre une lumiere sur les vérités les plus importantes". He explains that the corrections were printed as errata leaves rather than added to the text due to the impatience of the public, which led to much of the work being printed before Montesquieu's corrections had arrived ("malgré que nous les ayons attendues autant qu'il étoit possible"). De l'Esprit des loix is ostensibly a treatise on law, but it spills over into a consideration of every domain affecting human behaviour and into questions of philosophical judgement about the merit of various kinds of legislation. It is divided into six sections, dealing in turn with law in general and different forms of government, with the means of government, with national character and the effect on it of climate, with economic matters and religion, and - in the last chapter - with law, Roman, feudal and modern French. "The most distinctive aspect of this immense syllabus is its moderation: a quality not designed to achieve official approval in 1748. It is an always original survey which is neither doctrinaire, visionary, eccentric, nor over-systematic [...] But the scheme that emerges of a liberal benevolent monarchy limited by safeguards on individual liberty was to prove immensely influential [...] Curiously enough the philosophes, whose views were much in sympathy with his, did not speak much of him. This was partly due to the antagonism of Voltaire, and partly to a feeling that on this subject there was nothing much to be added. Yet his theories underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French revolutions, and the United States Constitution in particular is lasting tribute to the principles he advocated" (PMM).

- titre-531pp. - titre-521pp. Reliés demi-veau fauve glacé, dos à nerfs, coins, caissons jeux de filets dorés ornés de fleurettes et palmettes dorées (décor pastiche d'un travail ancien), têtes or, ébarbés. (Stroobants relieur). - (Barbier III, col.
