[Salamanca, 1749] [viii], 1-24 pp. 4to,----------------------------------------------------------- Later polished black calf-backed cloth-covered boards.Old ink stamp to TP. Paper age toned and slightly softened from damp on first few pages but stable. Repair to corner of title page. last page ink stained but text legible. A good copy. One of the rarest items of African womens literature. Pre -dating Phillis Wheatley by 23 years. One copy in World Cat : Biblioteca Nacional - Madrid. -------------------------------------------------------------------------Sor Teresa's full length hagiography (1752) by the same author is considered to be the first biography of an African woman in a modern european language. This oration contains the genesis of that biography and pre-dates it by 3 years. The oration is the first appearance of Sor Teresa in printed literature and marks the beginning of modern of Afro-Hispanic literature. It is likely that, in the near future, Sor Teresa will become the first saint of African origin for over a century.--------------------------------------------------------- Funeral oracion on the death of sister teresa juliana (chicaba) de santo domingo (ca 1676-1749), an african. Born in the northeastern portion of today's Ghana, Chikaba was probably a member of the Ewe tribal group. She was captured by Spanish sailors and sold to an aristocratic family in Spain. What we know of sister Teresa Juliana comes from father Juan Carlos Pan y Agua, who states that what he knew of Chicaba's early life came from her own "autobiographical writings," as well as her "poetry," no copies of which are known to have survived. Chicaba said that she came from the region of "La Mina Baja del Oro," or the part of West Africa that covers present day Eastern Ghana, Togo, Benin and Western Nigeria. . In accordance to the behest of her mistress who died in 1703, Chicaba was free to join the Dominican convent of La Penitencia in Salamanca. According to Pan y Agua, Sor Teresa Juliana gained recognition as a "healer with prodigious religious gifts. In spite of her inferior status in the order, her acts of charity, her mystical experiences, and her fame as a healer and miracle worker moved her order soon after her death to commission two portraits of her for purposes of local veneration," At the same time, they began the process of her beatification, for which father Pan y Agua first wrote the present Funeral Oration, and later the full-length hagiography, cited above [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The second part gathers together and analyzes the various accounts of vampires or the walking dead which were coming out of Eastern Europe during the 1720’s and 30’s. Calmet’s book quickly became popular and it helped cement the notion of a vampire in the Western European consciousness. [Coumont C7.2; Caillet 1965].

The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling

London: A. Millar, 1749. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Henry Fielding (1707-1754) was an English novelist and dramatist. Here is a lovely copy of the first edition, second printing of this seminal English novel. In the Harvard Classics volumes Gordon Gerould summarizes 'Tom Jones' thus: "As to the stupendous achievement of the novel there can be no question. Beyond all cavil it is supremely great. By the very might of its revelation of human nature it disarms criticism and tempts to the use of the superlative... The merit of it consists in the performance of what Fielding in his prefatory chapter promised to give the reader: 'The provision then which we have here made is no other than HUMAN NATURE. In like manner, the excellence of the mental entertainment consists less in the subject than in the author’s skill in well dressing it up.' In other words, 'Tom Jones' is great because it pictures real men and women, and because its craftsmanship is marvelous". The second printing was issued in April 1749, two months after the first printing. Cross describes it thus: "Immediate revision was rendered imperative on account of the numerous errors that crept into the text owing to the haste with which the novel had been at last put through the press... type and paper are the same and the paging is kept uniform with the edition having the errata... The table of contents is re-spaced so as to extend into the page formerly given to the errata... scores of individual pages differ either in the number of lines or in the last words and phrases". The copy offered here is identified as a second printing by the following specific bibliographic points. Volume I lacks the errata slip, and the table of contents expands to fill the previously unnumbered page with page xliii. The errata listed in the first printing are corrected. The first printing cancels are not present at II(N12), III(H8, H9,H10, M3 & Q11), and V(N8). Vols II and IV have the second printing free endpapers. This copy is in very good plus condition. The original calf boards have been retained with professional rebacking, which has reused the original red leather title panels. Each volume has the bookplate of Douglas Maxwell Moffat to the front pastedown. Moffat (1881-1956) was the U.S. Ambassador to Australia, appointed by President Eisenhower in February 1956, just a few months before his death. There are a few pencil notations to the pastedowns. Otherwise the contents are exceptionally nice - clean and undamaged with no foxing. A previous bookseller has pasted an inaccurate description to the rear pastedown of volume one.         THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING in a Charles Lewis binding

London: A. Millar, 1749. Second Edition. Hardcover. Light, scattered foxing. Rubbing to joints, covers firm. Near Fine in a handsome Charles Lewis binding. Six volumes bound in early full paneled calf leather with gilt-decorated boards and elaborately gilt-decorated spines with contrasting morocco spine labels: lxiii, [i], 214; [2] 324; [2] 370; [2] 312; [2] 294; [2] 304 pages. Binding with the small leather label on the front pastedown of Charles Lewis, one of the best bookbinders of the early 19th century and employer of Francis Bedford, who took over Lewis's shop after his death. Considered to be the first true novel in English. Second edition, printed from reset type of the first edition, correcting a number of minor mistakes. Cross III, pages 316-317. Often mistakenly referred to as the second issue of the first edition. Probably printed on 13 April 1749, the first edition having been printed only about a month prior, with the errata corrected and the table of contents for all six volumes preceding the text in the first volume. Cross describes the need for this edition so soon after the first: "Immediate revision was rendered imperative on account of the numerous errors that crept into the text owing to the haste with which the novel had been at last put through the press.... Type and paper are the same and the paging is kept uniform with the edition having the errata.... The table of contents is re-spaced so as to extend into the page formerly given to the errata....         The Savoyard Girl

Stipple engraving. Image measures 17" x 13.5". This beautiful stipple engraving of a girl playing a hurdy-gurdy beside a fireplace is modeled on William Hogarth's 1749 painting "The Savoyard Girl." This later print was made in 1798 and published in 1799. For many years, remained the only source of knowledge about Hogarth's painting, which remained in a private collection. The girl depicted is a savoyard, or a wandering street musician common in 18th-century London whose favorite instrument was the hurdy-gurdy, a stringed instrument with a crank and an onomatopoetic name. Sherlock's stipple engraving technique gives the print a lovely atmospheric quality that complements the girl's seemingly mournful song. The print is in good condition, with narrow margins and some wear to the corners, not affecting the image. It remains both a lovely document of art history and a work of art in its own right.

Sebastianum Coleti et J. B. Albrizzi Hieron, Fil., Venecia 1749 - Portadas grabadas. 518- 608 - y - 842 págs. Con un total de 66 págs. con grabados. Más 62 lámimas y 16 grandes láminas plegadas. Fenomenales grabados. IRENE: A TRAGEDY. AS IT IS ACTED AT THE THEATRE ROYAL IN DRURY LANE

London: Printed for R. Dodsley ... and Sold by M. Cooper ..., 1749.. [8],86,[2]pp. Octavo. Extracted from pamphlet volume. T.e.g., a few small smudges to half-title, otherwise a very good copy, with the advert leaf. First edition of Johnson's only play, published a dozen years after its completion as a consequence of Garrick's offer to stage it when he took over Drury Lane. It was first performed on 6 February 1748. Fleeman speculates that the edition may have been reasonably large, on the order of one thousand copies. Although he attributes little significance to them, the following variations are present in this copy: there is no semi- colon in the imprint; the catchword 'CENE' appears on pages 14 and 23 (rather than 'SCENE'), and no catchword is present on page 60. A fine copy, with the book label of Lt. General Adams (possibly Thomas Adams, 1730? - 1764) on the front past-down end-paper. The text was edited by Usher Gahagan (d. 1749), the Irish classical scholar. He edited a number of Brindley's classical imprints, all beautifully printed and often in fine bindings. Alas for scholarship: he was hanged on 20 February 1749, for "diminishing the coin of the realm" by filing small pieces off gold and silver coins.

Dissertation sur le taenia, ou ver-plat, dans laquelle on prouve que ce ver n'est pas solitaire. Avec une lettre sur la poudre de sympathie, propre contre le rhumatisme simple ou gouteux.

      P. G. Le Mercier,, Paris 1749 - First edition. While Dionis's consideration of the tape worm is fascinating enough (with its refutation of the theories of Nicolas Andry de Boisregard) the work is principally interesting for its larger part: Dionis's edition of Sir Kenelm Digby's account of the "Powder of Symapthy", an alchemical preparation purported to cure wounds at a distance. Made from dried green vitriol, this was a variant of the well-known Paracelsian 'weapon salve' which cured wounds by being applied, not to the patient, but to the offending weapon. It is a measure of the endurance of belief in this cure that Dionis entered into a contemporary dispute concerning its use and provides a recipe for it. Pp. 65-266 here are occupied by Dionis's introduction and by Digby's text, first published in 1658. 12mo (160 × 92 mm.), pp. [viii], 266, [iv], includes half-title. Typographical ornaments. Contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt panelled spine. Minor repairs to spine and corners. Old ownership inscription to half-title "Emanuel Dionis Duséjour" and ?his stamped monogram. A good copy.       London, c. 1749. Copper engraving, 31 x 81 cms, recent hand-colour, short closed tear entering printed area, left; repair to lower right hand-corner, not affecting image; old repairs on verso. This is the left-hand sheet of five which, taken together, make up the Bucks’s remarkable “long view of London”, first published in 1749. Unlike other panoramic views (such as Kip’s) which were drawn from a hypothetical elevated position which could take in the whole built-up area, the Buck brothers selected five points along the South Bank and faithfully recorded what they saw. Adams notes that they treated “all the waterfront buildings with equal care, whatever their social standing”. This view, which has the New Bridge at Westminster as its focus, was taken from “Mr Sheve’s Sugar House, opposite to York House”.
