        THE TRUE AMAZONS : Or, the Monarchy of BEES. Being a new Discovery and Improvement of those Wonderful Creatures..., Also, How to make the English Wine or Mead, equal, if not superior, to the best of other Wines.

      The Eighth Edition, fine engraved portrait frontispiece, 164pp plus 4pp advertisements, narrow octavo, a fine copy in contemporary polished calf with raised bands and gilt rules on spine and board margins, London, Printed for T. Longman & T. Astley, 1749.* FURTHER PHOTOGRAPHS SENT ON REQUEST * WARDER, JOSEPH (fl. 1688-1718), writer on bees, born before 1655, took up his residence at Croydon about 1688. He practised there as a physician for over thirty years. Warder made an especial study of the habits of bees, and in 1693 he embodied the results of many years of observation in a treatise entitled 'The True Amazons, or the Monarchy of Bees'. The work, which was considerably in advance of any former treatise and contained many curious particulars concerning the habits of bees as well as practical instructions for their management, went through nine editions, the last of which appeared in 1765. It remained the standard work on the subject until it was superseded by John Thorley's '... Female Monarchy' (London, 1744). A portrait of Warder, engraved by Henry Hulsberg, was prefixed to his book on bees." Wikisource. "... In his book True Amazons, Warder described the use of a hand lens to confirm by simple dissection the sex of the then mysterious drones as male bees. He explained why the drones were, contrary to popular opinion, important to the summer economy of the colony. In discussing the practical management of colonies he also advocated the provision of a nearby source of drinking water. Working at a time when straw skeps were the normal accommodation for honeybee colonies Warder explained the advantages of octagonal wooden hives with glass windows. These he had made up on a template to give standard units that could be built up and subdivided as required. He thus laid the foundations of modern apicultural practice. The True Amazons went through nine editions, all published in London, and after the first edition Warder obtained permission for a dedication to Queen Anne."(ODNB). With the armorial bookplate of KYNASTON POWELL, Sir John, 1st bt. (1753-1822), of Hardwick Hall, Salop.

        The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling

      London: for A Millar. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION OF FIELDING'S MASTERPIECE. Besides being an extremely prolific writer, Henry Fielding was a successful magistrate, founder of the Metropolitan Police, and pioneer of the comic novel. Tom Jones, the book that established this idea of the comic novel, received very mixed reviews upon publication: Sameul Taylor Coleridge said of him, "And how charming, how wholesome, Fielding always is! To take him up after Richardson, is like emerging from a sick room heated by stoves, into an open lawn.", while Samuel Johnson wrote "Sir, there is more knowledge of the heart in one letter of Richardson's, than in all Tom Jones." Nonetheless, "Such was the demand that all 2,500 copies in print had already been sold by the date announced for its a official publication, a phenomenon that one observer believed to be 'an unheard-of case.' Tom Jones quickly sold 10,000 copies, making it one of the great best-sellers of its time; it has never since been out of print." (John Allen Stevenson, The Real History of Tom Jones). First edition, with the errata leaf in vol. 1, and cancels B9-10 (I), B4-5 (II), H8-10, M3(III) and N8 (V). Rothschild 850. London: A. Millar, 1749. 12mo, contemporary full calf rebacked. 6 vols. With handsome bookplate of noted collector Arthur Wilmer Lissauer on front pastedown. Light wear to bindings, very minor occasional foxing. A very handsome set.

        Albius Tibullus, eques Romanus; et in eum Jo. Antonii Vulpii philologi ac rhetoris in Gymnasio Patavino novus commentarius diligentissimus

      Padua: excudebat Josephus Cominus, 1749 First edition as edited, with an extensive commentary, by the prominent Italian classical scholar Giovannantonio Volpi (1686-1766). An important edition of the love poems of Albius Tibullus, a first century BC contemporary of Horace and Virgil. Volpi (or Vulpius) had already produced a comparable edition of Catullus, and he later turned his attention to Propertius as well. . Contemporary half green straight-grained morocco. Flat spine, ornately gilt, edges stained yellow. Quarto. Title-page in black and red, with engraved vignette. Decorative headband, tail-pieces, and initial letters, publisher's device on colophon leaf. Minor rubbing to boards. A fine copy in an attractive binding. "Dr. Harwood gives this edition every praise" (Dibdin I, 382). Aside from the scholarly merit of this volume, it is also a fine example of Italian 18th-century typography at its best. Volpi and his brother started a printing business in Padua with the stated aim of producing books outstanding for their content as well as for their appearance. As director of this company they hired Giusseppe Comino.

        Sammlung Geist und Sinnreicher Gedancken, Uber Verschiedene aus der Natur, Kunst, und Wissenschafften vorgestellte Sinn-Bilder

      Prague: Jakob Schweiger, 1749. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to. [22 x 18], 47, 80, 70 pp., (1) f., 92 pp., (2) ff., including title printed in red and black, 58 nearly full-page engraved emblems. Bound in contemporary calf, head and tail of spine chipped and a puncture to front cover. Some toning and foxing to text leaves of parts 1-3, but plates are clean; final musical section very good. Very rare first edition of this German language emblem book printed in Prague, unusual if not singular in that the emblems are intended to be set to music. Each of the 58 large emblems in roundels is accompanied by odes, madrigals, and arias. The subject matter of the emblems is generally secular, variously depicting scenes from mythology-the torture of Tantalus, the perilous Scylla, the Trojan horse, Jason and the Argonaut's golden fleece, Atlas supporting the world; animals ranging from sinister snakes, bats and owls to elegant swans and active bees; and an array of dramatic landscapes full of thunderbolts and jagged mountains. A final section, evoking more religious themes, consists of the libretti for four oratorios: I. Tobias, II. Magdalena, III. Die obsiegende Liebe (a Passion oratorio), and IV. Der verlohrne Sohn. Johann Georg Ernst Cajetan Lösel composed music for 'Die obsiegende Liebe', but no copy is extant (Grove). Oppelt's interpretation of the 'spiritual thoughts' promised in the title is therefore not about fostering Christian virtue so much as noble sentiments of a more general nature. In this scheme, music and visual drama are used to stir the senses and emotions, in line with the work of rising contemporaries such as poets Friedrich Klopstock and Christoph Wieland. The work thus participates in the mid 18th century trajectory towards the culture of sentiment and sublime that is the signature of the Pre-Romantic period. OCLC lists Princeton and Trinity (Hartford) for the first edition; the 1766 is held by Northwestern. * Landwehr 462; Praz (1766) p. 439 (identical collation);

      A fundamental work on the Maranhao, ?A obra fundamental da história do Maranhao?. 1749. Lisbon. Francisco Luiz Ameno. In folio (283 mm x 194 mm). 13 ff. + 710. Later half vellum over boards, title lettered in gilt and with printed paper label at foot, a bit soiled but else very good. A wide margined copy, a few leaves with mainly marginal small worm holes, hardly noticeable, exceedingly fresh and clean, a splendid copy overall. First edition. Genuinely rare Portuguese work on their settlements on the northern states of Brazil, and one of the vastest sources of information on the Maranhao & the Amazon. It would be hard to overestimate the immense importance of this chronic of Brazil. ?The first edition is rare and much sought after, as it is a classic on Maranhao? (Borba de Moraes). Berredo was Governor of the Marañon from the year 1718-1722; he died in 1748 at Lisbon, whilst preparing this work for the press. Sabin quotes Southey saying ?(Pereira)... has left for himself a more durable remembrance in his historical annals of the state over which he presided?; ?One of the rarest books and at the same time one of the best private histories of Brazil? The seventh edition; to which is now added an account of the author’s journey to the banks of Euphrates at Beer, and to the country of Mesopotamia. With an index to the whole work. By Hen. Maundrell, M. A. late Fellow of Exeter Coll. and Chaplain to the Factory at Aleppo

      Oxford: printed at the Theatre, for W. Meadows Bookseller in Cornhill, London, MDCCXLIX [1749]. Half-Calf. Fine. 8vo: [12],171,[1]pp, with engraved title vignette and 15 further copper-engraved plates (most folding, four of which signed by Hawksmoor). Modern half-calf over marbled boards, spine decorated in blind with five raised bands, red leather lettering piece gilt. A Fine copy, spine a tad faded, text very lightly toned but clean and bright, plates in vivid impressions. Gibson's Library, p. 194 (for an earlier edition). Seventh Edition. At 3 pm, on Friday, 26 February 1697, Maundrell and fourteen others set off on an Easter pilgrimage from Aleppo, in Turkey (where Maundrell was chaplain to the Levant Company's factory) to Jerusalem, traveling across northern Syria to Latakia, down the coast to Acre, then to Jerusalem. According to the ODNB, "The Journey was partially intended to bring up to date George Sandys's account of 1610 (Relation of a journey begun an. dom. 1610. Foure bookes. Containing a description of the Turkish empire, of Aegypt, of the Holy Land, of the remote parts of Italy and llands adioyning). In fact, Maundrell's account is quite different from that of Sandys, and is a major work in its own right, giving detailed descriptions of the life and landscapes of Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine, including the agricultural practices of the regions and places encountered, in addition to descriptions of places of religious significance. . . . Curzon, in his Visits to Monasteries in the Levant (1849), says that he ‘was struck with the superiority of old Maundrell's narrative over all the others, for he tells us plainly and clearly what he saw’ (Curzon, 168), and Howell, in a preface to a 1963 reprint of the Journey, says that ‘it is taut, disciplined writing from which every wrinkle of ambiguity has been ironed away’ (Howell, xi). Most of the nineteenth-century writers on the Holy Land, including Henry Robinson, Dean Stanley, Carl Ritter, and George Adam Smith, comment positively on Maundrell's account."         A Voyage Round the World in the Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV

      London: for the Author, by John and Paul Knapton,, 1749. Compiled from his Papers and Materials, by Richard Walter, M.A. Chaplain of His Majesty's Ship the Centurion, in that Expedition. Illustrated with Forty-Two Copper-Plates. The Fifth Edition. Quarto (292 × 225 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, red morocco label, double gilt rules, raised bands, red sprinkled edges. 42 engraved plates, plans, charts and maps (folding and/or double page). Spine a little dried and cracking, neat restoration to extremities and joints, overall a very good, wide-margined copy, internally clean. Large paper copy, first published the previous year. Anson was in command of a squadron sent to plunder Spanish trading territories on the Pacific coast of South America during the War of Jenkins' Ear. His expedition threatened to turn into a military fiasco. His small squadron was battered by storms and too few of his crew survived the journey round Cape Horn to man even the largest ship properly. Anson limped across the Pacific to Macao, where he was able to have the Centurion repaired and find more crew. Finally in June 1743 he achieved a single but substantial victory, capturing a Spanish treasure ship, the Manila galleon, off the Philippines, and returned to England in June 1744 a rich man. "Anson's voyage is remembered as a classic tale of endurance and leadership in the face of fearful disasters, but to the British public of 1744 it was the treasure of the galleon, triumphantly paraded through the streets of London, which did something to restore national self-esteem battered by an unsuccessful war" (ODNB). The keenly-awaited book became a best-seller, running through numerous editions in its full or abridged form and being translated into several European languages. It is now agreed that the ostensible author, Richard Walter, took the initiative for publishing, gathering names of subscribers and profiting handsomely from it, but that Benjamin Robins completed the editorial task. "It is also clear that Anson himself took a very close interest in the work, which is as a result very complimentary of his actions but provides an interesting insight into his thinking. Walter's and Robins's contributions to the work can probably never be completely disentangled, but this should not obscure its continued popularity... It provided the inspiration and the basis for Patrick O'Brian's popular novel The Golden Ocean (1956), his first sea novel" (op. cit.)

        'T ORANJE GESLAGT

      Groningen: H. Spoormaker, 1749. (48)pp. This is the smallest of all the 18th century books known to us, printed in 5-point black-letter type across the spread, with pages pasted together and set into the binding. A collection of poems on the kings of the House of Orange, this book was printed during the reign of William IV, Prince of Orange and Nassau-Dietz, the first hereditary stadtholder of the Netherlands. It was virtually unknown until 1952 when, according to an article in The Miniature Book Collector, several copies mysteriously came up for sale. The article goes on to say that a Dutch antique dealer had found a box full of these minute books in a collection of antiques he had bought. He sold the whole group of books, but "later regretted having done so as the sight of the tiny volumes in his window had brought him many curious customers" (6). The books described in the article and in Houghton were bound in red calf with decorated in gilt, but this copy is bound in contemporary brown calf with gilt ornamentation. Slight bowing to boards, else fine. Housed in a red leather clamshell box lined in felt. Altogether a fine copy of an extremely rare book with an interesting story. A.e.g. (Welsh 5402; Houghton 259; Miniature Book Collector June 1960, p.5). (11/16 by 3/8; 17x9mm).

        De L’Esprit Des Loix…

      Leyden [i.e. Lyon?]: "Chez Les Libraires Associés, 1749., 1749. 2 Volumes in 1. 4to. pp. viii, [14], 369; 2 p.l., 306 [i.e. 395], [12], 16(‘Critique’, 50(‘Défense’). woodcut ornaments & initials. contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, corners renewed (some light foxing & browning). few early ms. notes in margins & corrections in text. Early Edition of one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century, treating the philosophical principles of law and government, and the determining influence of geographical and economic factors on social thought, customs, and legal and political institutions. Montesquieu was unanimously advised by his friends, including Helvétius and Fontenelle, not to publish, but he ignored them. Despite Helvétius’ criticism that the work was too moderate, it was placed on the Index and the Sorbonne planned a regular censure of it. Although largely misunderstood or ignored by his contemporaries, including the ‘philosophes’, Montesquieu’s theories exerted a profound influence; "they underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French Revolutions, and the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated." Niels Slange (1656-1737). Kong Christian VI, der bekostede udgivelsen af dette værk, forlangte, at manuskriptet blev gennemset af Hans Gram. Dette førte til en del stridigheder mellem Slange og Gram, idet de var uenige om rettelserne. Christian IV, who paid for the publication of this work, demanded that the manuscript was examined by Hans Gram. This caused strife between Slange and Gram since they disagreed on the corrections.
